Abstract
The hydrolysis and biotransformation of lignocellulose, i.e., biorefinery, can provide human beings with biofuels, bio-based chemicals, and materials, and is an important technology to solve the fossil energy crisis and promote global sustainable development. Biorefinery involves steps such as pretreatment, saccharification, and fermentation, and researchers have developed a variety of biorefinery strategies to optimize the process and reduce process costs in recent years. Lignocellulosic hydrolysates are platforms that connect the saccharification process and downstream fermentation. The hydrolysate composition is closely related to biomass raw materials, the pretreatment process, and the choice of biorefining strategies, and provides not only nutrients but also possible inhibitors for downstream fermentation. In this review, we summarized the effects of each stage of lignocellulosic biorefinery on nutrients and possible inhibitors, analyzed the huge differences in nutrient retention and inhibitor generation among various biorefinery strategies, and emphasized that all steps in lignocellulose biorefinery need to be considered comprehensively to achieve maximum nutrient retention and optimal control of inhibitors at low cost, to provide a reference for the development of biomass energy and chemicals.

Abstract
Fu Brick tea is a very popular post-fermented tea that is known for its "golden flower fungus," Aspergillus cristatus, which becomes the dominant microbe during the maturation process. This study used both culture-dependent methods and high-throughput sequencing to track microbial succession and interactions during the development of the golden flower fungus, a crucial component of the manufacturing process of Fu Brick tea. Among the bacterial communities, Klebsiella and Lactobacillus were consistently cultured from both fresh tea leaves and in post-fermentation Fu Brick tea. Methylobacterium, Pelomonas, and Sphingomonas were dominant genera in fresh tea leaves but declined once fermentation started, while Bacillus, Kluyvera, and Paenibacillus became dominant after piling fermentation. The abundance of A. cristatus increased during the manufacturing process, accounting for over 98% of all fungi present after the golden flower bloom in the Fu Brick tea product. Despite their consistent presence during culture work, network analysis showed Lactobacillus and Klebsiella to be negatively correlated with A. cristatus. Bacillus spp., as expected from culture work, positively correlated with the presence of golden flower fungus. This study provides complete insights about the succession of microbial communities and highlights the importance of co-occurrence microbes with A. cristatus during the manufacturing process of Fu Brick tea.

Abstract
Recently, technology of using oleaginous microorganisms for biological treatment of wastewaters has become one hot topic in biochemical and environmental engineering for its advantages such as easy for operation in basic bioreactor, having potential to produce valuable bio-products, efficient wastewaters treatment in short period, etc. To promote its industrialization, this article provides some comprehensive analysis of this technology such as its advances, issues, and outlook especially from industrial viewpoint. In detail, the types of wastewaters can be treated and the kinds of oleaginous microorganisms used for biological treatment are introduced, the potential of industrial application and issues (relatively low COD removal, low lipid yield, cost of operation, and lack of scale up application) of this technology are presented, and some critical outlook mainly on co-culture method, combination with other treatments, process controlling and adjusting are discussed systematically. By this article, some important information to develop this technology can be obtained.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the ethanol production from biomass by consolidated bioprocess (CBP) is considered to be the most ideal process, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) is the most appropriate strategy in practice. In this study, one-pot bioethanol production, including cellulase production, saccharification of cellulose, and ethanol production, was investigated for the conversion of biomass to biofuel by co-culture of two different microorganisms such as a hyper cellulase producer, Acremonium cellulolyticus C-1 and an ethanol producer Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Furthermore, the operational conditions of the one-pot process were evaluated for maximizing ethanol concentration from cellulose in a single reactor. RESULTS Ethanol production from cellulose was carried out in one-pot bioethanol production process. A. cellulolyticus C-1 and S. cerevisiae were co-cultured in a single reactor. Cellulase producing-medium supplemented with 2.5 g/l of yeast extract was used for productions of both cellulase and ethanol. Cellulase production was achieved by A. cellulolyticus C-1 using Solka-Floc (SF) as a cellulase-inducing substrate. Subsequently, ethanol was produced with addition of both 10%(v/v) of S. cerevisiae inoculum and SF at the culture time of 60 h. Dissolved oxygen levels were adjusted at higher than 20% during cellulase producing phase and at lower than 10% during ethanol producing phase. Cellulase activity remained 8-12 FPU/ml throughout the one-pot process. When 50-300 g SF/l was used in 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask scale, the ethanol concentration and yield based on initial SF were as 8.7-46.3 g/l and 0.15-0.18 (g ethanol/g SF), respectively. In 3-l fermentor with 50-300 g SF/l, the ethanol concentration and yield were 9.5-35.1 g/l with their yields of 0.12-0.19 (g/g) respectively, demonstrating that the one-pot bioethanol production is a reproducible process in a scale-up bioconversion of cellulose to ethanol. CONCLUSION A. cellulolyticus cells produce cellulase using SF. Subsequently, the produced cellulase saccharifies the SF, and then liberated reducing sugars are converted to ethanol by S. cerevisiae. These reactions were carried out in the one-pot process with two different microorganisms in a single reactor, which does require neither an addition of extraneous cellulase nor any pretreatment of cellulose. Collectively, the one-pot bioethanol production process with two different microorganisms could be an alternative strategy for a practical bioethanol production using biomass.

Abstract
This article reviews current co-culture systems for fermenting mixtures of glucose and xylose to ethanol. Thirty-five co-culture systems that ferment either synthetic glucose and xylose mixture or various biomass hydrolysates are examined. Strain combinations, fermentation modes and conditions, and fermentation performance for these co-culture systems are compared and discussed. It is noted that the combination of Pichia stipitis with Saccharomyces cerevisiae or its respiratory-deficient mutant is most commonly used. One of the best results for fermentation of glucose and xylose mixture is achieved by using co-culture of immobilized Zymomonas mobilis and free cells of P. stipitis, giving volumetric ethanol production of 1.277 g/l/h and ethanol yield of 0.49-0.50 g/g. The review discloses that, as a strategy for efficient conversion of glucose and xylose, co-culture fermentation for ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass can increase ethanol yield and production rate, shorten fermentation time, and reduce process costs, and it is a promising technology although immature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A metabolic regulation study was performed, based upon measurements of enzymatic activities, fermentation performance, and RT-PCR analysis of pathways related to central carbon metabolism, in an ethanologenic Escherichia coli strain (CCE14) derived from lineage C. In comparison with previous engineered strains, this E coli derivative has a higher ethanol production rate in mineral medium, as a result of the elevated heterologous expression of the chromosomally integrated genes encoding PDCZm and ADHZm (pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase from Zymomonas mobilis). It is suggested that this behavior might be due to lineage differences between E. coli W and C. RESULTS This study demonstrated that the glycolytic flux is controlled, in this case, by reactions outside glycolysis, i.e., the fermentative pathways. Changes in ethanol production rate in this ethanologenic strain result in low organic acid production rates, and high glycolytic and ethanologenic fluxes, that correlate with enhanced transcription and enzymatic activity levels of PDCZm and ADHZm. Furthermore, a higher ethanol yield (90% of the theoretical) in glucose-mineral media was obtained with CCE14 in comparison with previous engineered E. coli strains, such as KO11, that produces a 70% yield under the same conditions. CONCLUSION Results suggest that a higher ethanol formation rate, caused by ahigher PDCZm and ADHZm activities induces a metabolic state that cells compensate through enhanced glucose transport, ATP synthesis, and NAD-NADH+H turnover rates. These results show that glycolytic enzymatic activities, present in E. coli W and C under fermentative conditions, are sufficient to contend with increases in glucose consumption and product formation rates.

Abstract
Today, biomass covers about 10% of the world's primary energy demand. Against a backdrop of rising crude oil prices, depletion of resources, political instability in producing countries and environmental challenges, besides efficiency and intelligent use, only biomass has the potential to replace the supply of an energy hungry civilisation. Plant biomass is an abundant and renewable source of energy-rich carbohydrates which can be efficiently converted by microbes into biofuels, of which, only bioethanol is produced on an industrial scale today. Biomethane is produced on a large scale, but is not yet utilised for transportation. Biobutanol is on the agenda of several companies and may be used in the near future as a supplement for gasoline, diesel and kerosene, as well as contributing to the partially biological production of butyl-t-butylether, BTBE as does bioethanol today with ETBE. Biohydrogen, biomethanol and microbially made biodiesel still require further development. This paper reviews microbially made biofuels which have potential to replace our present day fuels, either alone, by blending, or by chemical conversion. It also summarises the history of biofuels and provides insight into the actual production in various countries, reviewing their policies and adaptivity to the energy challenges of foreseeable future.

Abstract
Three lignocellulosic substrate mixtures [liquid fraction of acid-catalyzed steam-exploded softwood, softwood spent sulfite liquor (SSL) and hardwood SSL] were separately fermented by the industrially employed SSL-adapted strain Tembec T1 and a natural galactose-assimilating isolate (Y-1528) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to compare fermentative efficacy. Both strains were confirmed as S. cerevisiae via molecular genotyping. The performance of strain Y-1528 exceeded that of Tembec T1 on all three substrate mixtures, with complete hexose sugar consumption ranging from 10 to 18 h for Y-1528, vs 24 to 28 h for T1. Furthermore, Y-1528 consumed galactose prior to glucose and mannose, in contrast to Tembec T1, which exhibited catabolite repression of galactose metabolism. Ethanol yields were comparable regardless of the substrate utilized. Strains T1 and Y-1528 were also combined in mixed culture to determine the effects of integrating their distinct metabolic capabilities during defined hexose sugar and SSL fermentations. Sugar consumption in the defined mixture was accelerated, with complete exhaustion of hexose sugars occurring in just over 6 h. Galactose was consumed first, followed by glucose and mannose. Ethanol yields were slightly reduced relative to pure cultures of Y-1528, but normal growth kinetics was not impeded. Sugar consumption in the SSLs was also accelerated, with complete utilization of softwood- and hardwood-derived hexose sugars occurring in 6 and 8 h, respectively. Catabolite repression was absent in both SSL fermentations.
