Equilibrium study on Cd(II) and Zn(II) chelates of mercapto carboxylic acids

A Double Barrier Technique with Hydrotalcites for Pb Immobilisation from Electric Arc Furnace Dust

A new line of mortars incorporating hydrotalcites was developed. This research article shows the results of a study of a double barrier technique (DBT) for Pb immobilisation from electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) in mortars with the addition of three different hydrotalcites (H1, H2, and H3). Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a hazardous waste due to its heavy metal leachability. The aim was to obtain a mortar in which, due to its chemical composition, heavy metal leaching satisfied environmental criteria. Previously, a physical and chemical characterisation of mortar material components was carried out. The leaching behaviour of Pb from EAFD in double barrier (DB) mortars with different hydrotalcites was analysed for compressive strength to determine treatment effectiveness. DB mortars could be considered monoliths because their compressive strengths were higher than 1 MPa but exhibited a decrease due to hydrotalcite incorporation. The mortar EAFD25_H2 (with ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) in the interlayer of the hydrotalcite) showed one minor reduction in compressive strength with respect to the reference mortar because formation of Portlandite was observed, which is a characteristic of cement hydration. The conventional immobilisation mortar (EAFD25) did not achieve Pb immobilisation. However, DB mortars with dimercaptosuccinate (DMSA) in the interlayer of the hydrotalcite reduced Pb release by ~50%, from 20.29 mg kg⁻¹ (EAFD25) to 9.88 mg kg⁻¹ (EAFD25_H3). In addition, EAFD25_H3 included the lowest hydrotalcite content, thereby improving the immobilisation ratio. The results of this study contribute to better Pb immobilisation, thus satisfying environmental criteria.

Thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of a Gd-DTPA bisamide complex grafted onto gold nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles coated by gadolinium (III) chelates (Au@DTDTPA) where DTDTPA is a dithiolated bisamide derivative of diethylenetriamine-N,N,N',N'',N''-pentaacetic acid (DTPA), constituted contrast agents for both X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In an MRI context, highly stable Gd(3+) complexes are needed for in vivo applications. Thus, knowledge of the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of these chelates, when grafted onto gold nanoparticles, is crucial since bisamide DTPA chelates are usually less suited for Gd(3+) coordination than DTPA. Therefore, these parameters were evaluated by means of potentiometric titrations and relaxivity measurements. The results showed that, when the chelates were grafted onto the nanoparticle, not only their thermodynamic stability but also their kinetic inertness were improved. These positive effects were correlated to the chelate packing at the nanoparticle surface that stabilized the corresponding Gd(3+) complexes and greatly enhanced their kinetic inertness.

Proton-controlled formation and interconversion of AuI2NiII trinuclear and AuI4NiII3 heptanuclear complexes with mixed thiomalate and bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane

A unique coordination system with linear Au^I and octahedral Ni^II centers, in which two polynuclear structures with different nuclearities are independently formed and inter-converted in response to solution acidities, is reported.

Investigation into the reactivity of unsupported and supported Ag7 and Ag8 clusters with toxic metal ions

We report the chemical interactions of unsupported and alumina-supported Ag(7) and Ag(8) clusters protected with MSA (mercaptosuccinic acid) with heavy metal ions Hg(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) in water at different concentrations. The investigation was carried out to determine the feasibility of this interesting new class of materials called quantum clusters for water purification. These systems were studied using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques such as ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy and in detail by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We observed that the metal ions interact with both the silver atoms of the clusters and the functional groups of the capping agent (MSA). The mercuric ions were reduced to metallic mercury by both supported and unsupported clusters, due to the feasibility of the redox reaction, whereas no reduction was observed for Cd(II) and Pb(II). As a result of the interaction, the luminescence of the cluster is lost which can be used to sense Hg(II). At lower concentrations, the metal ions were chemically bonded to the carboxylate groups of MSA. Absence of reduction of Hg(II) at lower concentration is due to the chemical affinity of the ligands and the lower silver content per cluster compared to the number of carboxylate groups.

Removal of heavy metals from aqueous systems with thiol functionalized superparamagnetic nanoparticles

We have shown that superparamagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles with a surface functionalization of dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) are an effective sorbent material for toxic soft metals such as Hg, Ag, Pb, Cd, and Tl, which effectively bind to the DMSA ligands and for As, which binds to the iron oxide lattices. The nanoparticles are highly dispersible and stable in solutions, have a large surface area (114 m2/g), and have a high functional group content (1.8 mmol thiols/g). They are attracted to a magnetic field and can be separated from solution within a minute with a 1.2 T magnet. The chemical affinity, capacity, kinetics, and stability of the magnetic nanoparticles were compared to those of conventional resin based sorbents (GT-73), activated carbon, and nanoporous silica (SAMMS) of similar surface chemistries in river water, groundwater, seawater, and human blood and plasma. DMSA-Fe3O4 had a capacity of 227 mg of Hg/g, a 30-fold larger value than GT-73. The nanoparticles removed 99 wt% of 1 mg/L Pb within a minute, while it took over 10 and 120 min for Chelex-100 and GT-73 to remove 96% of Pb.

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic separation of inorganic mercury and methylmercury driven by their different coordination chemistry towards thiols

Since mercuric mercury (Hg(2+)) and methylmercury (CH(3)Hg(+)) display different toxicological properties in mammals, methods for their quantification in dietary items must be available. Employing Hg-specific detection, we have developed a rapid, isocratic, and affordable RP-HPLC separation of these mercurials using thiol-containing mobile phases. Optimal separation was achieved with a 50mM phosphate-buffer containing 10mM L-cysteine at pH 7.5. The separation is driven by the on-column formation of complexes between each mercurial and L-cysteine, which are then separated according to their different hydrophobicities. The developed method is compatible with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and was applied to analyze spiked human urine.

Factors Governing the Quality of Aqueous CdTe Nanocrystals: Calculations and Experiment

The aqueous synthesis of thiol-stabilized semiconductor CdTe colloidal nanocrystals has been revisited. We found optimal conditions for the synthesis of high-quality CdTe NCs through a study of the influence of the initial conditions (structure and concentration of Cd-thiol complexes) on the quality of the CdTe nanocrystals. A numerical calculation shows a clear correlation between the concentration of CdL (where L is (SCH(2)COO)(2-)) in the initial solution and the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of the CdTe nanocrystals.

In vitro interactions between DMSA-coated maghemite nanoparticles and human fibroblasts: A physicochemical and cyto-genotoxical study

Although the current production of oxide nanoparticles may be modest, the wide range of proposed applications and forecasted growth in production has raised questions about the potential impact of these nanoparticles on the environment and human health. Iron oxide nanoparticles have been proposed for an increasing number of biomedical applications although in vitro toxicity depending on the particles coating has been evidenced. The aim of this study was to examine the potential in vitro cyto- and genotoxicity on human dermal fibroblasts of DMSA-coated maghemite nanoparticles (NmDMSA) as a function of well-defined physicochemical states. Well-stabilized NmDMSA produced weak cytotoxic and no genotoxic effects. This is attributed in part to the DMSA coating, which serves as a barrier for a direct contact between nano-oxide and fibroblasts, inhibiting a potential toxic effect.

Reduction in functional potency of the neurotoxin domoic acid in the presence of cadmium and zinc ions

The tricarboxylic neurotoxin domoic acid (DA) binds trace metals such as iron and copper. In vitro brain slice recording (area CA1 of rat hippocampal slices) was used to assess changes in DA potency in the presence of cadmium and zinc. Cadmium or zinc alone had little or no effect on CA1 responses. DA alone produced hyperexcitability and, with prolonged administration, a robust suppression of CA1 responses. Coadministration of DA with either 2 or 4μM Cd(2+) produced significant reductions in the potency of DA; less striking effects were seen in the presence of 4μM Zn(2+). These findings suggest that interactions of Cd(2+) and Zn(2+) with DA result in the formation of trace metal-neurotoxin complexes which are either unavailable for binding to ionotropic glutamate receptors, or bind without producing full agonist activity.
