Synthesis and properties of [Cu(L5)2][ClO4]2·H2O having square planar and pseudo-octahedral geometries in the same unit cell, and anion-bound complexes [Cu(L5)2X][ClO4] (X=Cl−, NCS−, N3−) [L5=2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)pyridine]

Nitrite and Nitric Oxide Interconversion at Mononuclear Copper(II): Insight into the Role of the Red Copper Site in Denitrification

Nitrite (NO2 - ) and nitric oxide (NO) interconversion is crucial for maintaining optimum NO flux in mammalian physiology. Herein we demonstrate that [L2 CuII (nitrite)]+ moieties (in 2 a and 2 b; where, L = Me2 PzPy and Me2 PzQu) with distorted octahedral geometry undergo facile reduction to provide tetrahedral [L2 CuI ]+ (in 3 a and 3 b) and NO in the presence of biologically relevant reductants, such as 4-methoxy-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (4-MeO-2,6-DTBP, a tyrosine model) and N-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH, a NAD(P)H model). Interestingly, the reaction of excess NO gas with [L2 CuII (MeCN)2 ]2+ (in 1 a) provides a putative {CuNO}10 species, which is effective in mediating the nitrosation of various nucleophiles, such as thiol and amine. Generation of the transient {CuNO}10 species in wet acetonitrile leads to NO2 - as assessed by Griess assay and 14 N/15 N-FTIR analyses. A detailed study reveals that the bidirectional NOx -reactivity, namely, nitrite reductase (NIR) and NO oxidase (NOO), at a common CuII site, is governed by the geometric-preference-driven facile CuII /CuI redox process. Of broader interest, this study not only highlights potential strategies for the design of copper-based catalysts for nitrite reduction, but also strengthens the previous postulates regarding the involvement of red copper proteins in denitrification.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cu(II) and Mixed-Valence Cu(I)Cu(II) Clusters Supported by Pyridylamide Ligands

A group of copper complexes supported by polydentate pyridylamide ligands H₂bpda and H₂ppda were synthesized and characterized. The two Cu(II) dimers [Cu^II₂(Hbpda)₂(ClO₄)₂] (1) and [Cu^II₂(ppda)₂(DMF)₂] (2) were constructed by using neutral ligands to react with Cu(II) salts. Although the dimers showed similar structural features, the second-sphere interactions affect the structures differently. With the application of Et₃N, the tetranuclear cluster (HNEt₃)[Cu^II₄(bpda)₂(μ₃-OH)₂(ClO₄)(DMF)₃](ClO₄)₂ (3) and hexanuclear cluster (HNEt₃)₂[Cu^II₆(ppda)₆(H₂O)₂(CH₃OH)₂](ClO₄)₂ (4) were prepared under similar reaction conditions. The symmetrical and unsymmetrical arrangement of the ligand donors in ligands H₂bpda and H₂ppda led to the dramatic conformation difference of the two Cu(II) complexes. As part of our effort to explore mixed-valence copper chemistry, the triple-decker pentanuclear cluster [Cu^II₃Cu^I₂(bpda)₃(μ₃-O)] (5) was prepared. XPS examination demonstrated the localized mixed-valence properties of complex 5. Magnetic studies of the clusters with EPR evidence showed either weak ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interactions among copper centers. Due to the trigonal-planar conformation of the trinuclear Cu(II) motif with the μ₃-O center, complex 5 exhibits geometric spin frustration and engages in antisymmetric exchange interactions. DFT calculations were also performed to better interpret spectroscopic evidence and understand the electronic structures, especially the mixed-valence nature of complex 5.

Homo- and heteronuclear complexes of a new, vicinal dioxime ligand

A new symmetrical vicinal dioxime, N,N′-bis-{4-[[(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylene]hydrazinecarbonyl]phenyl}diaminoglyoxime (LH4), was prepared by reacting anti-dichloroglyoxime with salicylaldehyde 4-aminobenzoylhydrazone. The reaction of ligand with Ni2+ salts gave mono-and homopentanuclear complexes, [Ni(LH3)2] and [Ni5(LH)2X2]. Furthermore, heteropentanuclear complexes of dioxime ligand, [Cu4Ni(LH)2X4], were prepared by the reaction of [Ni(LH3)2)] with Cu2+ salt and a monodentate ligand (X = SCN−, CN−, or N3−). The structures of both the new symmetrical vicinal dioxime and its complexes were identified by elemental analyses, IR, 1H NMR, UV-VIS spectra, and magnetic susceptibility. The elemental analyses and spectral data indicate that the hydrazone side of ligand acts as a O,N,O′ tridentate and the fourth position is occupied with monodentate anion such as SCN−, CN−, N3−.

Reaction with dioxygen of a Cu(I) complex of 1-benzyl-[3-(2'-pyridyl)]pyrazole triggers ethyl acetate hydrolysis: acetato-/pyrazolato-, dihydroxo- and diacetato-bridged Cu(II) complexes

A copper(I) compound [(L2)Cu(MeCN)2][ClO4] (1) containing a new bidentate N-donor ligand L2, 1-benzyl-[3-(2'-pyridyl)]pyrazole, derived from the condensation of HL1 [HL1 = 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole] and benzyl chloride, has been synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that in the copper(I) centre is coordinated by a pyridine and a pyrazole nitrogen from L2 and two MeCN molecules, providing a distorted tetrahedral geometry. Reaction of with dioxygen in N,N'-dimethylformamide (dmf) at 25 degrees C and subsequent workup with MeCO2Et afforded an acetato-/pyrazolato-bridged polymeric copper(II) compound [(mu-L1)Cu(mu-O2CMe)]n (2). Notably, the deprotonated form of HL(1) and MeCO2- have originated from debenzylation of L2 and hydrolysis of MeCO2Et, respectively. The structural analysis of reveals a near-planar {Cu2(mu-L1)2}2+ core unit in which two adjacent Cu(II) ions are bridged by the deprotonated N,N-bidentate pyridylpyrazole units of two L1 and each such {Cu2(mu-L1)2}2+ unit is bridged by MeCO2- in a monodentate bridging mode [Cu...Cu separations (A): 3.9232(4) pyrazolate bridge; 3.3418(4) acetate bridge], providing a polymeric network. Careful oxygenation of in MeCN led to the isolation of a dihydroxo-bridged dicopper(II) compound [{(L2)Cu(mu-OH)(OClO3)}2] (3). Interestingly, complex brings about hydrolysis of MeCO2Et under mild conditions (dmf, ca. 60 degrees C), generating a bis-mu-1,3-acetato-bridged dicopper(II) complex, [{(L2)Cu(dmf)(mu-O2CMe)}2][ClO4]2.dmf.0.5MeCO2H (4). Compounds and have {Cu2(mu-OH)2}2+ [Cu...Cu separation of 2.8474(9) A] and {Cu2(mu-O2CMe)2}2+ cores [Cu...Cu separation: 3.0988(26) and 3.0792(29) A (two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit)] in which each Cu(II) centre is terminally coordinated by L2. A rationale has been provided for the observed debenzylation of L2 and hydrolysis of MeCO(2)Et. The intramolecular magnetic coupling between the Cu(II) (S = 1/2) ions was found to be ferromagnetic (2J = 82 cm(-1)) in the case of , but antiferromagnetic for (2J = -158 cm(-1)) and (2J = -96 cm(-1)). Absorption and EPR spectroscopic properties of the copper(II) compounds have also been investigated.

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Three One-Dimensional Azido-Bridged Copper(II) and Manganese(II) Coordination Polymers

Three one-dimensional (1D) azido-bridged coordination polymers of formula [Cu(L)(N3)2]n (1), [Cu2(Me-L)(N3)4]n (2), and [Mn(L)(N3)2]n (3) have been synthesized and structurally characterized, and their magnetic properties studied, where L and Me-L are 2-(pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)pyridine and 2-(3-methylpyrazol-1-ylmethyl)pyridine, respectively. Compound 1 consists of 1D chains in which the Cu(II) ions with a square pyramidal geometry are alternately bridged by an end-to-end (EE) and an end-on (EO) azido ligands, both adopting a basal-apical disposition. Compound 2 exhibits an unprecedented chain topology built via three different kinds of EO azido bridges. Four Cu(II) ions in the square pyramidal environment are alternately bridged by single and double EO bridges to form a tetranuclear cyclic ring, and neighboring rings are interlinked by double EO bridges to generate a "chain of rings". The intraannular double azido ions are disposed between metal ions in a basal-basal fashion, and the other two kinds of azido ions adopt the basal-apical disposition. Compound 3 consists of 1D concave-convex chains in which cis-octahedrally coordinated Mn(II) ions are alternately bridged by double EE and double EO bridges. There exist pi-pi interactions between the ligands bound to the neighboring Mn(II) ions bridged by the EO bridges. Temperature- and field-dependent magnetic analyses reveal alternate ferromagnetic interactions for 1, dominating ferromagnetic interactions for 2, and alternating ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions through the EO and EE azido bridges for 3, respectively.
