Self-assembly and characterization of copper 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylate complexes based on a variety of polynuclear hydroxo clusters

Self-assembly of copper(ii) ion, 3,4-pyridinedicarboxylate (PDC), and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) under basic conditions at 100 °C affords four PDC linked copper(ii) complexes, [Cu(4)(μ(2)-OH)(3)(μ(3)-OH)(PDC)(phen)(4)](n)·n(PDC)·11.5 nH2O (1), [Cu(4)(μ(2)-OH)(2)(μ(3)-OH)(2)(PDC)(phen)(4)](n)·n(PDC)· 11.5 nH(2)O (2), [Cu(8)(μ(2)-OH)(2)(μ(3)-OH)(6)(PDC)(2)(phen)(8)]·2(PDC)·23 H(2)O (3), and [Cu(3.5)(μ(2)-OH)(3) (PDC)(2)(phen)](n) (4). 1-4 are copper hydroxo complexes, and 1, 2 and 3 co-crystallized from the one-pot reaction. X-ray single crystal diffraction analyses indicate that complexes 1 and 2 are linkage isomers and contain tetranuclear copper cluster cores with different geometry, and that PDC links the cluster core to form a one-dimensional chain. Complex 3 is a discrete step-like octanuclear copper hydroxo cluster complex. The involvement of hydroxo and phen in the coordination makes some coordination sites of PDC idle, which leads to rich hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions in complexes 1, 2 and 3. Complex 4 contains two types of copper hydroxo cluster cores: chair-like tetranuclear and linear trinuclear units, and the cluster cores are linked by PDC to a double-layer metal-organic framework. Magnetic properties of 1, 3 and 4 were investigated. The results reveal that complexes 3 and 4 exhibit strong antiferromagnetic interactions whereas ferromagnetic coupling is predominant for complex 1. The magnetic properties are analyzed in connection with their structures.

Two 3D triazolate-tricarboxylate-bridged Cu(II/I) frameworks by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis exhibiting spin-canted antiferromagnetism and strong antiferromagnetic couplings

Two 3D coordination polymers with the same components but different structures, [Cu(II)(2)Cu(I)(trz)(3)(Hbtc)](n) (1) and [Cu(4)(Htrz)(2)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(btc)(2)](n) (2), were obtained together by a one-pot hydrothermal reaction of Cu(OAc)(2).H(2)O, 1,2,4-triazole (Htrz), and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H(3)btc). Complex 1 is a mixed-valence Cu(I/II) honeycomb built from wavy Cu(II)-trz-carboxylate layers and Cu(I) nodes with doubly deprotonated Hbtc(2-) ligands covalently filled in the channels. In contrast, 2 is a tetranuclear [Cu(4)(Htrz)(2)(mu(3)-OH)(2)](6+) cluster-based framework extended by a fully deprotonated btc(3-) ligand, displaying a 3,6-connected topological network. More interestingly, spin-canted antiferromagnetism and overall strong antiferromagnetic couplings up to -147.1 cm(-1) are respectively observed for 1 and 2, which are significantly due to the antisymmetric magnetic exchange in the wavy Cu(II)-trz-carboxylate sublayer of 1 and the cooperative 4-fold heterobridges within the tetranuclear cluster of 2.

A New Basic Motif in Cyanometallate Coordination Polymers: Structure and Magnetic Behavior of M(μ-OH2)2[Au(CN)2]2 (M=Cu, Ni)

The structures of two cyanoaurate-based coordination polymers, M(mu-OH(2))(2)[Au(CN)(2)](2) (M=Cu, Ni), were determined by using a combination of powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The basic structural motif for both polymers contains rarely observed M(mu-OH(2))(2)M double aqua-bridges, which generate an infinite chain; two trans [Au(CN)(2)](-) units also dangle from each metal center. The chains form ribbons that interact three dimensionally through CNH hydrogen bonding. The magnetic properties of both compounds and of the dehydrated analogue Cu[Au(CN)(2)](2) were investigated by direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) magnetometry; muon spin-relaxation data was also obtained to probe their magnetic properties in zero-field. In M(mu-OH(2))(2)[Au(CN)(2)](2), ferromagnetic chains of M(mu-OH(2))(2)M are present below 20 K. Interchain magnetic interactions mediated through hydrogen bonding, involving water and cyanoaurate units, yield a long-range magnetically ordered system in Cu(mu-OH(2))(2)[Au(CN)(2)](2) below 0.20 K, as indicated by precession in the muon spin polarization decay. Ni(mu-OH(2))(2)[Au(CN)(2)](2) undergoes a transition to a spin-glass state in zero-field at 3.6 K, as indicated by a combination of muon spin-relaxation and ac-susceptibility data. This transition is probably due to competing interactions that lead to spin frustration. A phase transition to a paramagnetic state is possible for Ni(mu-OH(2))(2)[Au(CN)(2)](2) upon application of an external field; the critical field was determined to be 700 Oe at 1.8 K. The dehydrated compound Cu[Au(CN)(2)](2) shows weak antiferromagnetic interactions at low temperatures.

Combined Effects of Diamines and Carboxylate Bridges on Structural and Magnetic Properties of a Series of Polynuclear Copper(II) Complexes with 1,1-Cyclobutanedicarboxylic Acid

Six new copper(II) complexes of formula [Cu(mu-cbdca)(H2O)]n (1) (cbdca = cyclobutanedicarboxylate), [Cu2(mu-cbdca)2(mu-bipy)2]n (2) (bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), [Cu(mu-cbdca)(mu-bpe)]n (3) (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane), [Cu(mu-cbdca)(bpy)]2 (4) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine), [Cu(terpy)(ClO4)]2(mu-cbdca).H2O (5) (terpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine), and [Cu(cbdca)(phen) (H2O)].2H2O (6) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were obtained and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 is a two-dimensional network with a carboxylate bridging ligand in syn-anti (equatorial-equatorial) coordination mode. Complexes 2 and 3 are formed by chains through syn-anti (equatorial-apical) carboxylate bridges, linked to one another by the corresponding amine giving two-dimensional nets. Complexes 4 and 5 are dinuclear, with the copper ions linked by two oxo (from two different carboxylate) bridging ligands in 4 and with only one carboxylate showing the unusual bis-unidentate mode in complex 5. Complex 6 is mononuclear, with the carboxylate linked to copper(II) in a chelated form. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions build an extended two-dimensional network. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1-5 in the temperature range 2-300 K show the occurrence of weak ferromagnetic coupling for 1 and 4 (J = 4.76 and 4.44 cm(-1), respectively) and very weak antiferromagnetic coupling for 2, 3, and 5 (J = -0.94, -0.67, and -1.61 cm(-1), respectively). Structural features and magnetic values are compared with those reported for the similar copper(II) malonate and phenylmalonate complexes.

Structure and Magnetic Properties of a Hydroxo-Bridged Copper(II) Distorted Cubane Stabilized via Supramolecular Hydrogen Bonding with an Ionic Hexafluoroacetylacetonate

Tetranuclear [Cu(II)4(OH)4(aib)4)](hfac)4 (1; aib = 2-methyl-2-amino-4-iminopentane; hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) forms from the reaction of aqueous ammonia and Cu(hfac)2.2H2O in acetone. The structure of 1 reveals that four noncoordinating hfac- counterions stabilize the distorted cubane complex via multiple H-bonding contacts. Magnetic susceptibility studies reveal that cubane-like 1 is best described as a pair of independent antiferromagnetically coupled dimers with g = 2.10 and J/kB = -298 K (207 cm(-1)) (H = -2JS1.S2).

Syntheses, Structures, and Magnetic Properties of Unusual Nonlinear Polynuclear Copper(II) Complexes Containing Derivatives of 1,2,4-Triazole and Pivalate Ligands

Novel polynuclear Cu(II) complexes containing derivatives of 1,2,4-trizaole and pivalate ligands, [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)(mu-adetrz)(2)(piv)(5)(H(2)O)].6.5H(2)O (1) (adetrz = 4-amino-3,5-diethyl-1,2,4-triazole, piv = pivalate), [Cu(4)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(mu-atrz)(2)(mu-piv)(4)(piv)(2)].2MeOH.H(2)O (2) (atrz = 4-amino-1,2,4-triazole), [Cu(4)(mu(3)-OH)(2)(mu-tbtrz)(2)(mu-piv)(2)(piv)(4)].4H(2)O (3) (tbtrz = 4-tert-butyl-1,2,4-trizaole), and [Cu(4)(mu(3)-O)(2)(mu-admtrz)(4)(admtrz)(2)(mu-piv)(2)(piv)(2)].2[Cu(2)(mu-H(2)O)(mu-admtrz)(piv)(4)].13H(2)O [4 = 4a.2(4b).13H(2)O; admtrz = 4-amino-3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-triazole], have been prepared and structurally characterized. 1 is an asymmetrical triangular complex containing a [Cu(3)(mu(3)-OH)] core with two Cu---Cu edges spanned by bridging adetrz ligands. 2, 3, and 4a are novel tetranuclear compounds containing a [Cu(4)(mu(3)-O)(2)] or [Cu(4)(mu(3)-OH)(2)] core with Cu---Cu edges spanned by bridging 1,2,4-triazole or pivalate ligands. 4b is a dinuclear compound with one admtrz and one water bridge, and it is the first dinuclear Cu(II) triazole complex with one bridging water molecule. 1 is one of few reported triangular Cu(II) complexes with derivatives of 1,2,4-triazole, while 2, 3, and 4a are the first group of the nonlinear tetranuclear Cu(II) compounds with derivatives of 1,2,4-triazole. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies on the powder samples of 1-3 reveal the overall antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) ions with J values of -55.6 to -12.8 cm(-1) (1), -216.4 to 0 cm(-1) (2), and -259.8 to 4.8 cm(-1) (3).

High-frequency, high-field EPR; magnetic susceptibility; and X-ray studies on a ferromagnetic heterometallic complex of diethanolamine (H2L), [Cu4(NH3)4(HL)4][CdBr4]Br2.3dmf.H2O

The novel heterometallic complex [Cu(4)(NH(3))(4)(HL)(4)][CdBr(4)]Br(2).3dmf.H(2)O has been prepared in the reaction of zerovalent copper with cadmium oxide in the air-exposed solution of ammonium bromide and diethanolamine (H(2)L) in dimethylformamide (dmf). The compound is monoclinic, with space group P2(1)/c, a = 14.876(3) A, b = 33.018(6) A, c = 11.437(2) A, beta = 108.182(3)(o), and Z = 4. The crystal lattice consists of [Cu(4)(NH(3))(4)(HL)(4)](4+) cations, [CdBr(4)](2)(-), Br(-) anions, and uncoordinated dmf and water molecules. In the cation, four independent Cu atoms occupy vertexes of a distorted tetrahedron with bridged Cu...Cu distances in the range 3.127(2)-3.333(3) A and other Cu...Cu separations being 3.445(3)-3.503(2) A. The magnetic susceptibility and the EPR spectra were measured over the temperature ranges 1.8-300 and 3-300 K, respectively. The magnetic moment was found to increase with decreasing temperature to reach a maximum of 2.60 muB per one copper atom at ca. 10 K and was found, subsequently, to diminish slightly at lower temperatures owing to zero-field and Zeeman splitting of the S = 2 ground state. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility was fitted to the spin Hamiltonian H = J(ab)S(a)S(b) + J(bc)S(b)S(c) + J(cd)S(c)S(d) + J(ad)S(a)S(d) + J(ac)S(a)S(c) + J(bd)S(b)S(d) with the exchange integrals J(ab) = J(bc) = J(cd) = J(ad) = -65(3) cm(-1) and J(ac) = J(bd) = +1(3) cm(-1). High-field, high-frequency (95-380 GHz) EPR spectra due to an S = 2 ground state were simulated with g(x) = 2.138(1), g(y)) = 2.142(1), g(z) = 2.067(1), D = -0.3529(3) cm(-1), and E = -0.0469(8) cm(-1). Calculations based on the X-ray structure indicate a negligible contribution of the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions to the zfs parameters D and E. A discussion of the isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions and their effect on the zfs parameters is also given.

Polymeric networks of copper(ii) using succinate and aromatic N–N donor ligands: synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic behaviour and the effect of weak interactions on their crystal packing

Four succinato-bridged complexes of copper(II) have been synthesized. Complex 1, [Cu(2)(mu-OH(2))(2)L(bpy)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n) and 2, [Cu(2)(mu-OH(2))(2)L(phen)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n)(bpy = 2,2[prime or minute]-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and LH(2)= succinic acid) exhibit 1D coordination polymer structures where both the nitrate ions are directly linked to the copper(ii) producing synthons in a 2D sheet. A novel 2D grid-like network, ([Cu(4)L(2)(bpy)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(4)(H(2)O))n3, is obtained upon changing the nitrate by perchlorate anion in complex 1, where the channels are occupied by the anions. On changing the nitrate by tetrafluoroborate anion in complex 2, a novel octanuclear complex, [Cu(8)L(4)(phen)(12)](BF(4))(8).8H(2)O 4, is isolated. The coligand bpy and phen in these complexes show face-to-face (in 1,2,3,4) or edge-to-face (in 4 )pi-pi interactions forming the multidimensional supramolecular architectures. Interestingly, the appearance of edge-to-face pi-pi interactions in complex facilitates the formation of discrete octanuclear entities. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic measurements of complexes have been done. Complexes 1 and 2 show very weak antiferromagnetic (OOC-CH(2)-CH(2)-COO) and ferromagnetic coupling (mu-H(2)O). Complex 3 also shows antiferromagnetic (syn-syn mu-OCO), and ferromagnetic coupling (mu-O of the -COO group). Complex 4 with two types (syn-syn and syn-anti) of binding modes of the carboxylate group shows strong antiferromagnetic interaction.
