Dinuclear and tetranuclear oxo-bridged iron(III) complexes of the ambidentate ligand 3-(2-pyridyl)-pyrazole

[Fe(µ2-OH)6]3- Linked Fe3O Triads: Mössbauer Evidence for Trigonal µ3-O2- or µ3-OH- Groups in Bridged versus Unbridged Complexes

The syntheses, coordination chemistry, and Mössbauer spectroscopy of hepta-iron(III) complexes using derivatised salicylaldoxime ligands from two categories; namely, 'single-headed' (H2L) and 'double-headed' (H4L) salicylaldoximes are described. All compounds presented here share a [Fe3-µ3-O] core in which the iron(III) ions are µ3-hydroxo-bridged in the complex C1 and µ3-oxo-bridged in C2 and C3. Each compound consists of 2 × [Fe3-µ3-O] triads that are linked via a central [Fe(µ2-OH)6]3- ion. In addition to the charge balance and microanalytical evidence, Mössbauer measurements support the fact that the triads in C1 are µ3-OH bridged and are µ3-O bridged in C2 and C3.

New salicylaldoximato-borate ligands resulting from anion hydrolysis and their respective copper and iron complexes

Anion hydrolysis reactions between salicylaldoximato ligands (L'-L''') and copper and iron BF₄^- metal salts, have resulted in the formation of new salicylaldoximato borate containing transition metal complexes: [Fe₂(L' + 2H)₂](BF₄)₂(MeOH)₄ (C1), [Fe₃(L'' + 4H)(OH)₂(Py)₂](BF₄)₂(H₂O)₂(Py)₂ (C2), and [Cu₂(L''' + H)₂Cl₂] (C3). Each of the complexes have been structurally characterised, revealing the indirect role boron plays in the formation of these complexes. For complexes C1 and C2, Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed the existence of Fe(iii) oxidation states. SQUID magnetometry measurements were performed on complexes C2 and C3, revealing the presence of two competing exchange pathways between the three Fe(iii) centres in C2, with antiferromagnetic exchange dominating. For C3 weak antiferromagnetic exchange dominated between the two Cu(ii) centres.

Controllable assembly of a three-dimensional metal-organic supramolecular framework displaying hydrogen-bonding and π-π stacking interactions

The complex poly[[aqua(μ2-phthalato-κ(2)O(1):O(2)){μ3-2-[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]acetato-κ(4)N(2),N(3):O:O'}{μ2-2-[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]acetato-κ(3)N(2),N(3):O}dizinc(II)] dihydrate], {[Zn2(C10H8N3O2)2(C8H4O4)(H2O)]·2H2O}n, has been prepared by solvothermal reaction of 2-[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]acetonitrile (PPAN) with zinc(II). Under hydrothermal conditions, PPAN is hydrolyzed to 2-[3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl]acetate (PPAA(-)). The structure determination reveals that the complex is a one-dimensional double chain containing cationic [Zn4(PPAA)4](4+) structural units, which are further extended by bridging phthalate ligands. The one-dimensional chains are extended into a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture via hydrogen-bonding and π-π stacking interactions.

Heteropolymetallic complexes with pyridylpyrazolates bridging Mn and Na or K are tetrametallic and contain bridging pyridylpyrazolates with an unprecedented coordination mode, whereas the Mn/Li complex is bimetallic.

Controllable assembly of a three-dimensional metal–organic supramolecular framework including π–π stacking interactions

The mixed-ligand metal–organic complex poly[(μ3-phthalato)[μ2-3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-ido]dicopper(II)], [Cu2(C8H4O4)(C8H6N3)2]n, has been synthesized by the reaction of copper(II) acetate with 2-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (HL) and phthalic acid. The binuclear chelating–bridgingLunits are further linked by bridging phthalate ligands into a two-dimensional network parallel to the (010) plane. The two-dimensional networks are extended into a three-dimensional supramolecular architectureviaπ–π stacking interactions.

2-(1H-Pyrazol-3-yl)pyridinium chloride monohydrate

The title organic salt, C(8)H(8)N(3) (+)·Cl(-)·H(2)O, exhibits a rich hydrogen-bonding network involving all constituent species. The water mol-ecules are engaged in strong O-H⋯Cl inter-actions with the chloride anions, two neighboring protonated 2-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridinium species inter-act via N-H⋯N bonds with two pyrazole rings. Further, a short and highly directional C-H⋯O inter-action is observed connecting the pyridinium ring to the water mol-ecule of crystallization. Weak C-H⋯Cl and N-H⋯Cl inter-actions contribute to the stabilization of the crystal structure.

Pyrazoles and pyrazolides-flexible synthons in self-assembly

This Perspective summarises the chemistry of the pyrazole ring, and reviews the metal coordination modes adopted by 1H-pyrazoles and their anions. Pyrazolide anions are probably the most versatile ligands in coordination chemistry, with 20 different terminal or bridging coordination modes having been identified so far. Metal cluster compounds supported by pyrazolido ligation are surveyed, concentrating on those reported during the past ten years. Highlights include the wide structural diversity in apparently simple main group pyrazolides; luminescence and charge-transfer complexes in coinage metal pyrazolide clusters; the use of robust metal pyrazolide clusters to construct liquid crystals, supramolecular materials and metal-organic frameworks; and supramolecular complexes formed by pyrazolide-supported metallacrowns.

Polymetallic clusters of iron(III) with derivatised salicylaldoximes

The synthesis and magnetic properties of the compounds [HNEt(3)][Fe(2)(OMe)(Ph-sao)(2) (Ph-saoH)(2)].5MeOH (1.5MeOH), [Fe(3)O(Et-sao)(O(2)CPh)(5)(MeOH)(2)].3MeOH (2.3MeOH), [Fe(4)(Me-sao)(4)(Me-saoH)(4)] (3), [HNEt(3)](2)[Fe(6)O(2)(Me-sao)(4)(SO(4))(2)(OMe)(4)(MeOH)(2)] (4), [Fe(8)O(3)(Me-sao)(3)(tea)(teaH)(3)(O(2)CMe)(3)] (5), [Fe(8)O(3)(Et-sao)(3)(tea)(teaH)(3)(O(2)CMe)(3)] (6), and [Fe(8)O(3)(Ph-sao)(3)(tea)(teaH)(3)(O(2)CMe)(3)] (7) are reported (Me-saoH(2) is 2'-hydroxyacetophenone oxime, Et-saoH(2) is 2'-hydroxypropiophenone oxime and Ph-saoH(2) is 2-hydroxybenzophenone oxime). 1-7 are the first Fe(III) compounds synthesised using the derivatised salicylaldoxime ligands, R-saoH(2). 1 is prepared by treatment of Fe(2)(SO(4))(3).6H(2)O with Ph-saoH(2) in the presence of NEt(3) in MeOH; 2 prepared by treatment of Fe(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O with Et-saoH(2) and NaO(2)CPh in the presence of NEt(4)OH in MeOH; 3 prepared by treatment of Fe(ClO(4))(2).6H(2)O with Me-saoH(2) and NaO(2)CCMe(3) in the presence of NEt(4)OH in MeOH; and 4 prepared by treatment of Fe(2)(SO(4))(3).6H(2)O with Me-saoH(2) in the presence of NEt(3) in MeOH. 4 is a rare example of a polynuclear iron complex containing a coordinated SO(4)(2-) ion. Compounds 5-7 are prepared by treatment of Fe(O(2)CMe)(2) with Me-saoH(2) (5), Et-saoH(2) (6), Ph-saoH(2) (7) in the presence of H(3)tea (triethanolamine) in MeOH, and represent the largest nuclearity Fe(III) clusters containing salicyladoxime-based ligands, joining a surprisingly small family of characterised octanuclear Fe complexes. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibilty measurements of 1, 3 and 5-7 reveal all five complexes possess S = 0 spin ground states; 2 possesses an S = 1/2 spin ground state, while 4 has an S = 4 +/- 1 spin ground state.

En Route to the Formation of High-Efficiency, Osmium(II)-Based Phosphorescent Materials

Triosmium cluster complexes [Os3(CO)8(fppz)2] (2a) and [Os3(CO)8(fptz)2] (2b) bearing two 2-pyridyl azolate ligands were synthesized in an attempt to establish the reaction mechanism that gives rise to the blue-emitting phosphorescent complexes [Os(CO)2(fppz)2] (1a) and [Os(CO)2(fptz)2] (1b) [(fppz)H = 3-(trifluoromethyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole; (fptz)H = 3-(trifluoromethyl)-5-(2-pyridyl)triazole]. X-ray structural analysis of 2b showed an open triangular metal framework incorporating multisite-coordinated 2-pyridyltriazolate ligands. Treatment of 2 with the respective 2-pyridylazolate ligand led to the formation of blue-emitting complex 1b, confirming their intermediacy, while the reaction of 2b with phosphine ligand PPh2Me afforded two hitherto novel hydride complexes 3 and 4, for which the reversible interconversion was clearly established at higher temperatures (> 180 degrees C). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of 3 and 4 confirmed their monometallic and isomeric nature, together with the coordination of two phosphine ligands located in the trans-disposition and one CO and one hydride located opposite to the pyridyl triazolate chelate. Subtle differences in photophysical properties were examined for isomers 3 and 4 on the basis of steady state absorption and emission, the relaxation dynamics, and temperature-dependent luminescent studies. The results, in combination with time-dependent density function theory (TDDFT) calculations, provide fundamental insights into the future design and preparation of highly efficient phosphorescent emitters.

Reaction with dioxygen of a Cu(I) complex of 1-benzyl-[3-(2'-pyridyl)]pyrazole triggers ethyl acetate hydrolysis: acetato-/pyrazolato-, dihydroxo- and diacetato-bridged Cu(II) complexes

A copper(I) compound [(L2)Cu(MeCN)2][ClO4] (1) containing a new bidentate N-donor ligand L2, 1-benzyl-[3-(2'-pyridyl)]pyrazole, derived from the condensation of HL1 [HL1 = 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole] and benzyl chloride, has been synthesized. Structural analysis reveals that in the copper(I) centre is coordinated by a pyridine and a pyrazole nitrogen from L2 and two MeCN molecules, providing a distorted tetrahedral geometry. Reaction of with dioxygen in N,N'-dimethylformamide (dmf) at 25 degrees C and subsequent workup with MeCO2Et afforded an acetato-/pyrazolato-bridged polymeric copper(II) compound [(mu-L1)Cu(mu-O2CMe)]n (2). Notably, the deprotonated form of HL(1) and MeCO2- have originated from debenzylation of L2 and hydrolysis of MeCO2Et, respectively. The structural analysis of reveals a near-planar {Cu2(mu-L1)2}2+ core unit in which two adjacent Cu(II) ions are bridged by the deprotonated N,N-bidentate pyridylpyrazole units of two L1 and each such {Cu2(mu-L1)2}2+ unit is bridged by MeCO2- in a monodentate bridging mode [Cu...Cu separations (A): 3.9232(4) pyrazolate bridge; 3.3418(4) acetate bridge], providing a polymeric network. Careful oxygenation of in MeCN led to the isolation of a dihydroxo-bridged dicopper(II) compound [{(L2)Cu(mu-OH)(OClO3)}2] (3). Interestingly, complex brings about hydrolysis of MeCO2Et under mild conditions (dmf, ca. 60 degrees C), generating a bis-mu-1,3-acetato-bridged dicopper(II) complex, [{(L2)Cu(dmf)(mu-O2CMe)}2][ClO4]2.dmf.0.5MeCO2H (4). Compounds and have {Cu2(mu-OH)2}2+ [Cu...Cu separation of 2.8474(9) A] and {Cu2(mu-O2CMe)2}2+ cores [Cu...Cu separation: 3.0988(26) and 3.0792(29) A (two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit)] in which each Cu(II) centre is terminally coordinated by L2. A rationale has been provided for the observed debenzylation of L2 and hydrolysis of MeCO(2)Et. The intramolecular magnetic coupling between the Cu(II) (S = 1/2) ions was found to be ferromagnetic (2J = 82 cm(-1)) in the case of , but antiferromagnetic for (2J = -158 cm(-1)) and (2J = -96 cm(-1)). Absorption and EPR spectroscopic properties of the copper(II) compounds have also been investigated.

Syntheses, Crystal Structures, and Magneto−Structural Correlations of Novel CuII Complexes Containing a Planar [Cu(μ-L1)]2 (HL1 = 3-(2-Pyridyl)pyrazole) Unit: From Dinuclear to Tetranuclear and Then to One-Dimensional Compounds

Seven new Cu(II) complexes based on a binuclear planar unit [Cu(mu-L(1))](2), [[Cu(mu-L(1))(NO(3))(H(2)O)](2) (1), [Cu(mu-L(1))(HL(1))(ClO(4))](2) (2), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(NO(3))(2)] (3), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(L(1))(2)] (4), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(mu-L(2))](n) (5), [Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(6)(mu-L(3))](n) (6), [[Cu(4)(mu-L(1))(4)(mu-L(4))(2)](H(2)O)(3)](n) (7) (HL(1) = 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole, L(2) = 1,8-naphthalenedicarboxylate, L(3) = terephthalate, L(4) = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate)}, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and X-ray diffraction. In 1 and 2, the Cu(II) centers are linked by deprotonated pyrazolyl groups to form dinuclear structures. 3 and 4 have similar gridlike tetranuclear structures in which two additional deprotonated L(1) ligands bridge two [Cu(mu-L(1))](2) units perpendicularly. 5 and 6 consist of similar one-dimensional (1-D) chains in which gridlike tetranuclear copper(II) units similar to that of 3 are further linked by L(2) or L(3) ligands, respectively. And, in 7, L(4) ligands link [Cu(mu-L(1))](2) binuclear units to form a tetranuclear gridlike structure in chelating/bridging mode and simultaneously bridge the tetranuclear units to form a 1-D chain. The magnetic properties of all complexes were studied by variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements. The obtained parameters of J range from -33.1 to -211 cm(-1), indicating very strong antiferromagnetic coupling between Cu(II) ions. The main factor that affects the |J| parameter is the geometry of the Cu(N(2))(2)Cu entity. From the magnetic point of view, 1 and 2 feature "pure" dinuclear, 3 and 5 tetranuclear, and 4, 6, and 7 pseudodinuclear moieties.

Synthesis and crystal structure of 2,3-bis[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]hydroquinone dihydrate at 158 K

2,3-Bis[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl]hydroquinone dihydrate crystallises in the space group C2/c with half a molecule of the title compound and a water molecule in the asymmetric unit. A two-fold rotation axis relates the two 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazol-1-yl substituents. The pyridine and pyrazole rings are approximately coplanar while the pyrazole ring is orthogonal to the benzene ring. Each water molecule is hydrogen bonded to the hydroxyl group and also to nitrogen atoms of two adjacent molecules; these hydrogen bonding interactions give rise to a two-dimensional network architecture.
