Self-Reported Perceptions of Sleep Quality and Resilience Among Dance Students

This study examined relationships between self-perceived sleep quality and resilience among 116 dance students (Mean age = 21.6 years; SD = 4.348). who self-reported sleep quality with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and personal resilience with the Resilience Scale (RS). Most participants (59.5%) reported poor sleep quality on the PSQI, with 62.9% of the women and 42.1% of the men ( p = .092) scoring higher than five points on this instrument. On the RS, a large majority of the participants (75%) obtained scores less than 147, indicating low resilience, with no significant gender differences observed. Those reporting poor sleep quality (PSQI scores > 5) obtained lower resilience scores (RS < 147) than those reporting good sleep quality (PSQI scores ≤ 5; p = .025), and participants with poorer sleep quality were at higher risk of low resilience (Odds Ratio = 3.273) relative to those with good sleep quality ( p = .006). Those with shorter duration sleep (claiming they slept <7 hours/night) were also at higher risk for low resilience (Odds Ratio = 3.266), relative to those with longer duration sleep (>7 hours/night). These findings can help students and dance professionals improve their performance and face pressures inherent in dance practice. Follow-up research should verify these findings in varied populations with objective sleep measures and observational data from multiple respondents.

As medidas de fotoproteção são divulgadas como procedimentos essenciais na prevenção de doenças cutâneas e manutenção da saúde e beleza. Os exercícios físicos regulares também são indicados para alcançar o estilo de vida saudável; no entanto, a prática esportiva expõe a maior radiação solar. O objetivo deste artigo é revisar as medidas fotoprotetoras na prevenção dos danos causados pelo Sol na pele dos desportistas. Abordam-se o histórico da fotoproteção, o espectro eletromagnético, os efeitos das radiações e os riscos de exposição durante as atividades físicas. Implementar estratégias, como a escolha do horário, local, roupas e acessórios, complementados pelo uso de filtros solares, minimizam os riscos decorrentes das radiações ultravioletas A e B (UVA e UVB) durante a prática esportiva ao ar livre. Dentre os produtos disponíveis no mercado, devem-se preferir aqueles que ofereçam segurança, ampla proteção, boa cosmética, estabilidade química em diferentes condições de calor e umidade, fotoestabilidade e baixo custo. O atleta deve ser orientado pelos profissionais da área da saúde sobre os riscos inerentes às suas atividades cotidianas e esportivas. O autoexame de pele é parte essencial na prevenção dos problemas dermatológicos, pois auxilia na detecção precoce. O futuro da fotoproteção no esporte está no investimento em medidas educativas desde a infância, reduzindo assim os danos solares cumulativos. A exposição solar deve ocorrer de modo cauteloso e com o mínimo de sequelas, mediante comportamento de fotoproteção, para proporcionar melhor qualidade de vida.

Skin manifestations of running

As the United States comes increasingly closer to being the heaviest nation on earth, many people are turning to exercise, especially running, to lose weight. Most runners, whether novice or professional, will have a skin disorder that may prompt them to seek medical attention. Although case reports and sports reviews have discussed, in a cursory fashion, the nature of these skin lesions, to our knowledge there has never been an extensive review of the literature that specifically addresses the skin diseases of runners. In this article, we present the epidemiology, origin, clinical characteristics, treatment, and prevention of skin diseases inherent to runners.

Aspectos epidemiológicos das micoses dos pés em um time chinês de futebol

As infecções fúngicas podais podem interferir no desempenho esportivo ao provocar desconforto e dor nos atletas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência das infecções fúngicas podais em um time profissional de futebol, verificando os agentes mais freqüentes e os fatores predisponentes. O delineamento da pesquisa foi transversal e descritivo. A amostra foi composta de 22 homens, com idades entre 23 e 36 anos, integrantes do time de futebol profissional chinês, quando de sua participação de jogos em Curitiba (PR). Todos foram avaliados clinicamente e submetidos a exames micológicos (direto e cultura) de escamas de pele e unha dos pés e estudo histopatológico de fragmento ungueal. Os resultados encontrados foram: 12 casos (54,5%) não apresentavam micose; cinco casos (22,72%) apresentavam onicomicose isolada e cinco casos (22,72%) apresentavam onicomicose associada a tinea pedis, tendo como principal agente isolado o Trichophyton rubrum. Os fatores predisponentes apontados pelos atletas incluíram: banho em local público (85%), prática de esporte (76%), uso de calçados fechados (70%), contato com animal doméstico (63%) e irregularidade na higiene dos pés (50%). CONCLUSÃO: A freqüência da onicomicose em atletas chineses foi maior do que na população em geral. O agente mais freqüente foi o Trichophyton rubrum. Os hábitos individuais podem contribuir para a aquisição dessas infecções fúngicas, além do trauma direto pelo calçado e bola, bem como pelo contato físico durante treinos e jogos que podem favorecer lesões cutâneas e ungueais.

Whether it is to take on the challenge, to get in shape and lose weight, to relieve stress, or to enjoy the outdoors, people have increasingly turned to the marathon as their sporting event of choice. Although there are many health benefits, beginners should be aware that injuries are quite common in marathon runners. Among these are the wear and tear injuries to the skin. This is a review of the most commonly reported dermatological injuries on marathon day.

Cutaneous manifestations of disease in athletes

In this first part of a two part series, we will discuss infectious means of skin injury and contact sensation in regard to athletic participation. Part 2 will address mechanical means and environmental means of skin injury as well as performance enhancing drugs used in sports and their effects on the skin.

Pulmonary disorders and exercise

The respiratory system rarely limits exercise in the normal subject. In patients with chronic pulmonary processes or in the elite athlete, however, the respiratory system may indeed be the limiting factor. Common respiratory disorders include chest pain syndromes, cough, exercise-induced asthma, and vocal cord dysfunction. Chronic lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, and interstitial lung disease impact exercise capacity and endurance. Exercise testing can be useful to distinguish acute and chronic pulmonary causes of dyspnea during exercise, as well as to differentiate between cardiac and pulmonary causes.
