Effects of Ionic Interferents on Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction: Mechanistic Insight

Nitrate, a prevalent water pollutant, poses substantial public health concerns and environmental risks. Electrochemical reduction of nitrate (eNO3RR) has emerged as an effective alternative to conventional biological treatments. While extensive lab work has focused on designing efficient electrocatalysts, implementation of eNO3RR in practical wastewater settings requires careful consideration of the effects of various constituents in real wastewater. In this critical review, we examine the interference of ionic species commonly encountered in electrocatalytic systems and universally present in wastewater, such as halogen ions, alkali metal cations, and other divalent/trivalent ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-/CO32-, SO42-, and PO43-). Notably, we categorize and discuss the interfering mechanisms into four groups: (1) loss of active catalytic sites caused by competitive adsorption and precipitation, (2) electrostatic interactions in the electric double layer (EDL), including ion pairs and the shielding effect, (3) effects on the selectivity of N intermediates and final products (N2 or NH3), and (4) complications by the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and localized pH on the cathode surface. Finally, we summarize the competition among different mechanisms and propose future directions for a deeper mechanistic understanding of ionic impacts on eNO3RR.

Response of Ionic Hydration Structure and Selective Transport Behavior to Aqueous Solution Chemistry during Nanofiltration

The effect of aqueous solution chemistry on the ionic hydration structure and its corresponding nanofiltration (NF) selectivity is a research gap concerning ion-selective transport. In this study, the hydration distribution of two typical monovalent anions (Cl- and NO3-) under different aqueous solution chemical conditions and the corresponding transmembrane selectivity during NF were investigated by using in situ liquid time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate the inextricable link between the ion hydration structure and the pore steric effect and further find that ionic transmembrane transport can be regulated by breaking the balance between the hydrogen bond network (i.e., water-water) and ion hydration (i.e., ion-water) interactions of hydrated ion. For strongly hydrated (H2O)nCl- with more intense ion-water interactions, a higher salt concentration and coexisting ion competition led to a larger hydrated size and, thus, a higher ion rejection by the NF membrane, whereas weakly hydrated (H2O)nNO3- takes the reverse under the same conditions. Stronger OH--anion hydration competition resulted in a smaller hydrated size of (H2O)nCl- and (H2O)nNO3-, showing a lower observed average hydration number at pH 10.5. This study deepens the long-overlooked understanding of NF separation mechanisms, concerning the hydration structure.

Tuning the Microenvironment of Water Confined in Ti3C2Tx MXene by Cation Intercalation

The local microenvironment has recently been found to play a major role in the electrocatalytic activity of nanomaterials. Modulating the microenvironment by adding alkali metal cations into the electrolyte can be used to either suppress hydrogen or oxygen evolution, thereby extending the electrochemical window of energy storage systems, or to tune the selectivity of electrocatalysts. MXenes are a large family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides that have shown potential for use in electrochemical energy storage applications. Due to their negatively charged surfaces, MXenes can accommodate cations and water molecules between the layers. Nevertheless, the nature of the aqueous microenvironment in the MXene interlayer space is poorly understood. Here, we apply Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to probe the hydrogen bonding of intercalated water in Ti3C2Tx as a function of intercalated cation and relative humidity. Substantial changes in the FTIR spectra after cation exchange demonstrate that the hydrogen bonding of water molecules confined between the MXene layers is strongly cation-dependent. Furthermore, the IR absorbance of the confined water correlates with resistivity estimated by 4-point probe measurements and interlayer distance calculated from XRD patterns. This work demonstrates that cation intercalation strongly modulates the confined microenvironment, which can be used to tune the activity or selectivity of electrochemical reactions in the interlayer space of MXenes in the future.

Emerging electro-driven technologies for phosphorus enrichment and recovery from wastewater: A review

The recovery of phosphorus from wastewater is a critical step in addressing the scarcity of phosphorus resources. Electro-driven technologies for phosphorus enrichment have gathered significant attention due to their inherent advantages, such as mild operating conditions, absence of secondary pollution, and potential integration with other technologies. This study presents a comprehensive review of recent advancements in the field of phosphorus enrichment, with a specific focus on capacitive deionization and electrodialysis technologies. It highlights the underlying principles and effectiveness of electro-driven techniques for phosphorus enrichment while systematically comparing energy consumption, enrichment rate, and concentration factor among different technologies. Furthermore, the study provides a thorough analysis of the capacity of various technologies to selectively enrich phosphorus and proposes several methods and strategies to enhance selectivity. These insights offer valuable guidance for advancing the future development of electrochemical techniques with enhanced efficiency and effectiveness in phosphorus enrichment from wastewater.

Crystal structures of Na+ ,K+ -ATPase reveal the mechanism that converts the K+ -bound form to Na+ -bound form and opens and closes the cytoplasmic gate

Na+ ,K+ -ATPase (NKA) plays a pivotal role in establishing electrochemical gradients for Na+ and K+ across the cell membrane by alternating between the E1 (showing high affinity for Na+ and low affinity for K+ ) and E2 (low affinity to Na+ and high affinity to K+ ) forms. Presented here are two crystal structures of NKA in E1·Mg2+ and E1·3Na+ states at 2.9 and 2.8 Å resolution, respectively. These two E1 structures fill a gap in our description of the NKA reaction cycle based on the atomic structures. We describe how NKA converts the K+ -bound E2·2K+ form to an E1 (E1·Mg2+ ) form, which allows high-affinity Na+ binding, eventually closing the cytoplasmic gate (in E1 ~ P·ADP·3Na+ ) after binding three Na+ , while keeping the extracellular ion pathway sealed. We now understand previously unknown functional roles for several parts of NKA and that NKA uses even the lipid bilayer for gating the ion pathway.

Smart Organic-Inorganic Polyoxomolybdates in Forward Osmosis for Antiviral-Drug Wastewater Treatment and Drug Reclamation

The demand to effectively treat medical wastewater has escalated with the much greater use of antiviral drugs since the COVID-19 pandemic. Forward osmosis (FO) has great potential in wastewater treatment only when appropriate draw solutes are available. Here, we synthesize a series of smart organic-inorganic polyoxomolybdates (POMs), namely, (NH₄)₆[Mo₇O₂₄], (PrNH₃)₆[Mo₇O₂₄], (ⁱPrNH₃)₆[Mo₇O₂₄], and (BuNH₃)₆[Mo₇O₂₄], for FO to treat antiviral-drug wastewater. Influential factors of separation performance have been systematically studied by tailoring the structure, organic characteristics, and cation chain length of POMs. POMs at 0.4 M produce water fluxes ranging from 14.0 to 16.4 LMH with negligible solute losses, at least 116% higher than those of NaCl, NH₄HCO₃, and other draw solutes. (NH₄)₆[Mo₇O₂₄] creates a water flux of 11.2 LMH, increased by more than 200% compared to that of NaCl and NH₄HCO₃ in long-term antiviral-drug wastewater reclamation. Remarkably, the drugs treated with NH₄HCO₃ and NaCl are either contaminated or denatured, while those with (NH₄)₆[Mo₇O₂₄] remain intact. Moreover, these POMs are recovered by sunlight-assisted acidification owing to their light and pH dual sensitivity and reusability for FO. POMs prove their suitability as draw solutes and demonstrate their superiority over the commonly studied draw solutes in wastewater treatment.

Comparative Study of Different Ion-Exchange Membrane Types in Diffusion Dialysis for the Separation of Sulfuric Acid and Nickel Sulfate

The possibility of using various types of ion-exchange membranes in diffusion dialysis for the separation of sulfuric acid and nickel sulfate has been evaluated. The process of the dialysis separation of a real waste solution from an electroplating facility containing 252.3 g/L of sulfuric acid, 20.9 g/L of nickel ions and small amounts of zinc, iron, copper ions, etc. has been studied. Heterogeneous cation-exchange membrane containing sulfonic groups and heterogeneous anion-exchange membranes with different thicknesses (from 145 μm to 550 μm) and types of fixed groups (four samples with quaternary ammonium base and one sample with secondary and tertiary amines) have been used. The diffusion fluxes of sulfuric acid, nickel sulfate, and the total and osmotic fluxes of the solvent have been determined. The use of a cation-exchange membrane does not allow the separation of the components, since the fluxes of both components are low and comparable in magnitude. The use of anion-exchange membranes makes it possible to efficiently separate sulfuric acid and nickel sulfate. Anion-exchange membranes with quaternary ammonium groups are more effective in the diffusion dialysis process, while the thin membrane turns out to be the most effective.

Development of iron-based biochar for enhancing nitrate adsorption: Effects of specific surface area, electrostatic force, and functional groups

The problem of nitrate contamination in water has attracted widespread attention. Original biochar has a poor adsorption capacity for nitrate adsorption. Iron impregnation and acid protonation (base deprotonation) are common modification methods for biochar. In order to develop iron-mediated biochar containing multi-functional groups for enhancing nitrate adsorption, Fe-BC@H and Fe-BC@OH were prepared using a two-stage development process, including an iron-based carbon pyrolysis followed by acid protonation (or base deprotonation). The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models can well describe the adsorption process which is a physicochemical complex monolayer adsorption. The data proved that Fe-BC@H (9.35 mg/g NO₃^--N) had a stronger adsorption capacity than Fe-BC@OH (2.95 mg/g NO₃^--N). Surface morphologies, functional groups, and mineral compositions of Fe-BC@H and Fe-BC@OH were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Characterization results showed that acid protonation can further improve the specific surface area (SSA), pore volume, and Zeta potential of Fe-based biochar, providing more adsorption sites for nitrate and enhancing the electrostatic force between nitrate and biochar. However, these effects were suppressed through base deprotonation. In addition, acid protonation can significantly increase the type and number of functional groups of biochar to enhance the chemisorption of nitrate. Such results suggested that the acid protonation can further improve the adsorption capacity of Fe-based biochar for nitrate, while base deprotonation had an inhibitory effect on that of Fe-based biochar. Overall, this study reveals that specific surface area, electrostatic force, and functional groups are crucial effects of the nitrate adsorption on acid/base modified biochar.

Lactose Mother Liquor Stream Valorisation Using an Effective Electrodialytic Process

The integrated electrodialysis (ED) process supports valorisation of a lactose-rich side stream from the dairy industry, creating an important source of milk sugar used in various branches of the industry. This work focuses on the optimization of the downstream processes before the crystallization of lactose. The process line includes a pre-treatment and desalination by ED of the industrial waste solution of the lactose mother liquor (LML). The LML was diluted to 25% total solids to overcome hydraulic issues with the ED desalination process. Two different levels of electrical conductivity reduction (70% and 90%) of the LML solutions were applied to decrease the mineral components and organic acids of the LML samples. The ED performance parameters such as ash transfer rate (J), the specific capacity (C_F) of the ED and specific electric energy consumption (E) were determined and the influence of the LML solution on the monopolar ion-exchange membranes has been investigated. A higher degree of desalination is associated with higher electric energy consumption (by 50%) and lower specific capacity (by 40%). A noticeable decrease (by 12.8%) in the resistance of the anion exchange membranes was measured after the trials whereas the resistance of the cation exchange membranes remained practically unchanged. Any deposition of the alkaline earth metals on the membrane surface was not observed.

The Application of the Nanofiltration Membrane NF270 for Separation of Fermentation Broths

The potential for nanofiltration (NF) in removing both relatively low molecular weight (MW) organic species and charged solutes from complex media is noteworthy. The main aim of the current work was to improve understanding of the separation mechanisms of fermentation broths components in the NF process. For this purpose, the experimental investigations were performed using the commercial polyamide NF270 membrane. The feed solution was ultrafiltered 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) broths. The separation results were analyzed and discussed in light of the detailed characteristics of both the membrane and the broth components. It has been noted that the membrane ensured the complete 1,3-PD permeability and significant rejection of some feed components. A thorough analysis showed that the retention of carboxylic acids was based on both the Donnan effect and sieve mechanism, according to the following order: succinic acid > lactic acid > acetic acid > formic acid. Indeed, acids retention increased with increasing charged acids ions valency, Stokes radius (rS) as well as MW, and decreasing diffusion coefficient (D). In turn, for ions, the following orders retention was determined: SO42− = PO43− > Cl− and Ca2+ > Na+ > NH4+ ~ K+. It indicated that the ions retention increased with increasing ions charge density, hydrated radius (rH), and hydration energy (Eh). It showed that the separation of the ions was based on the Donnan exclusion, sieving effect, and dielectric exclusion.

The Application of Cellulose Acetate Membranes for Separation of Fermentation Broths by the Reverse Osmosis: A Feasibility Study

Recently, there has been a special research focus on the bioconversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) due to its significance in the chemical industry. However, the treatment and separation of fermentation broths is a great challenge. Currently, the reverse osmosis (RO) process is a reliable state-of-the-art technique for separation of biological solutions. This study (as the first to do so) investigated the feasibility of separation of 1,3-PD broths with the use of cellulose acetate (CA) membrane by the RO process. The experiments were carried out using the installation equipped with the plate module, under the transmembrane pressure (TMP) and temperature of 1 MPa and 298 K, respectively. It was found that the used membrane was suitable for broth separation. Indeed, it was noted that 1,3-PD, as a target product, migrated through the membrane; meanwhile, other broth components were rejected in various degrees. Moreover, it was proven that retention of carboxylic acids tended to increase with increasing molecular weight, according to the following order: succinic acid > lactic acid > acetic acid > formic acid. With regards to ions, retention degree increased with the increase of ionic radius and decrease of diffusion coefficient. Finally, it was demonstrated that the CA membrane is resistant to irreversible fouling, which has a positive effect on the economic viability of the process.

Cryo-electron microscopy of Na+ ,K+ -ATPase reveals how the extracellular gate locks in the E2·2K+ state

Na⁺ ,K⁺ -ATPase (NKA) is one of the most important members of the P-type ion-translocating ATPases and plays a pivotal role in establishing electrochemical gradients for Na⁺ and K⁺ across the cell membrane. Presented here is a 3.3 Å resolution structure of NKA in the E2·2K⁺ state solved by cryo-electron microscopy. It is a stable state with two occluded K⁺ after transferring three Na⁺ into the extracellular medium and releasing inorganic phosphate bound to the cytoplasmic P domain. We describe how the extracellular ion pathway wide open in the E2P state becomes closed and locked in E2·2K⁺ , linked to events at the phosphorylation site more than 50 Å away. We also show, though at low resolution, how ATP binding to NKA in E2·2K⁺ relaxes the gating machinery and thereby accelerates the transition into the next step, that is, the release of K⁺ into the cytoplasm, more than 100 times.

Pilot-Scale Selective Electrodialysis for the Separation of Chloride and Sulphate from High-Salinity Wastewater

The separation of chloride and sulphate is important for the treatment of high salt wastewater, and monovalent selective electrodialysis (MSED) has advantages in terms of energy consumption and pre-treatment costs compared to nanofiltration salt separation. Most of the research on monovalent anion-selective membranes (MASM) is still on a laboratory scale due to the preparation process, cost, and other reasons. In this study, a low-cost, easy-to-operate modification scheme was used to prepare MASM, which was applied to assemble a pilot-scale electrodialysis device to treat reverse osmosis concentrated water with a salt content of 4% to 5%. The results indicate that the optimum operating conditions for the device are: 250 L/h influent flow rate for the concentration and dilute compartments, 350 L/h influent flow rate for the electrode compartment and a constant voltage of 20 V. The separation effect of the pilot electrodialysis plant at optimal operating conditions was: the Cl− and SO42− transmission rates of 80% and 2.54% respectively, the separation efficiency (S) of 93.85% and the Energy consumption per unit of NaCl (ENaCl) of 0.344 kWh/kg. The analysis of the variation of the three parameters of selective separation performance during electrodialysis indicates that the separation efficiency (S) is a suitable parameter for measuring the selective separation performance of the device compared to the monovalent selectivity coefficient (PSO42−Cl−).

Cryoelectron microscopy of Na+,K+-ATPase in the two E2P states with and without cardiotonic steroids

The E2P state of Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase, in which the ATPase is phosphorylated and of low affinity to Na⁺ with the extracellular gate opened, shows different biochemical properties depending on whether the phosphate is transferred from ATP in the forward reaction or from inorganic phosphate (P_i) in the backward reaction. We present here cryoelectron microscopy structures of Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase in the two E2P states, explaining their different biochemical properties established a half century ago. The new electron microscopy maps show previously unseen structural features, including unexpected binding modes of cardiotonic steroids, specific and medically important inhibitors of the ATPase, and stabilization by ATP of the E2P state.

Cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) was applied to Na⁺,K⁺-ATPase (NKA) to determine the structures of two E2P states, one (E2P^ATP) formed by ATP and Mg²⁺ in the forward reaction, and the other (E2P^Pi) formed by inorganic phosphate (P_i) and Mg²⁺ in the backward reaction, with and without ouabain or istaroxime, representatives of classical and new-generation cardiotonic steroids (CTSs). These two E2P states exhibit different biochemical properties. In particular, K⁺-sensitive acceleration of the dephosphorylation reaction is not observed with E2P^Pi, attributed to the presence of a Mg²⁺ ion in the transmembrane cation binding sites. The cryo-EM structures of NKA demonstrate that the two E2P structures are nearly identical but Mg²⁺ in the transmembrane binding cavity is identified only in E2P^Pi, corroborating the idea that it should be denoted as E2P^Pi·Mg²⁺. We can now explain why the absence of transmembrane Mg²⁺ in E2P^ATP confers the K⁺ sensitivity in dephosphorylation. In addition, we show that ATP bridges the actuator (A) and nucleotide binding (N) domains, stabilizing the E2P^ATP state; CTS binding causes hardly any changes in the structure of NKA, both in E2P^ATP and E2P^Pi·Mg²⁺, indicating that the binding mechanism is conformational selection; and istaroxime binds to NKA, extending its aminoalkyloxime group deep into the cation binding site. This orientation is upside down compared to that of classical CTSs with respect to the steroid ring. Notably, mobile parts of NKA are resolved substantially better in the electron microscopy (EM) maps than in previous X-ray structures, including sugars sticking out from the β-subunit and many phospholipid molecules.

Quantitative characterization of non-DLVO factors in the aggregation of black soil colloids

The variable role and fate of soil colloids under different environmental conditions are derived from their dispersion and aggregation properties. In this work, dynamic and static light scattering were used to characterize the original size, aggregation kinetics of natural black soil colloids (BSCs) and structural features of aggregates in electrolytes with different cations (K⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺), respectively. For these three cations, the aggregation kinetics followed the trend of Ca²⁺ > Mg²⁺ > K⁺ and the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) followed the sequence: K⁺ (134.30 mmol L⁻¹) > Mg²⁺ (13.27 mmol L⁻¹) > Ca²⁺ (4.19 mmol L⁻¹). The results indicated that the aggregation behavior in different valence cation systems followed the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model qualitatively. However, the quantitative differences of CCC suggest the existence of ion-specific effects. The effective ionic charge coefficient 1.31, 2.20, and 2.78 of K⁺, Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ were proposed to consider of all the non-DLVO factors, which were obtained by forming a relationship based on mathematic between the electrostatic repulsion and the van der Waals attractive interaction at the CCC. The non-classical polarization of cations in a strong soil electric field is a primary mechanism of cation effects on soil colloid interactions, causing the difference in colloid interaction energy and further affecting soil colloid aggregation. This result is crucial for enriching the theory of charged colloidal interactions.

The energetic barrier to single-file water flow through narrow channels

Various nanoscopic channels of roughly equal diameter and length facilitate single-file diffusion at vastly different rates. The underlying variance of the energetic barriers to transport is poorly understood. First, water partitioning into channels so narrow that individual molecules cannot overtake each other incurs an energetic penalty. Corresponding estimates vary widely depending on how the sacrifice of two out of four hydrogen bonds is accounted for. Second, entropy differences between luminal and bulk water may arise: additional degrees of freedom caused by dangling OH-bonds increase entropy. At the same time, long-range dipolar water interactions decrease entropy. Here, we dissect different contributions to Gibbs free energy of activation, ΔG ^‡, for single-file water transport through narrow channels by analyzing experimental results from water permeability measurements on both bare lipid bilayers and biological water channels that (i) consider unstirred layer effects and (ii) adequately count the channels in reconstitution experiments. First, the functional relationship between water permeabilities and Arrhenius activation energies indicates negligible differences between the entropies of intraluminal water and bulk water. Second, we calculate ΔG ^‡ from unitary water channel permeabilities using transition state theory. Plotting ΔG ^‡ as a function of the number of H-bond donating or accepting pore-lining residues results in a 0.1 kcal/mol contribution per residue. The resulting upper limit for partial water dehydration amounts to 2 kcal/mol. In the framework of biomimicry, our analysis provides valuable insights for the design of synthetic water channels. It thus may aid in the urgent endeavor towards combating global water scarcity.

Structures of additional crystal forms of Satellite tobacco mosaic virus grown from a variety of salts

The structures of new crystal forms of Satellite tobacco mosaic virus (STMV) are described. These belong to space groups I2, P21212 (a low-resolution form), R3 (H3) and P23. The R3 crystals are 50%/50% twinned, as are two instances of the P23 crystals. The I2 and P21212 crystals were grown from ammonium sulfate solutions, as was one crystal in space group P23, while the R3 and the other P23 crystals were grown from sodium chloride, sodium bromide and sodium nitrate. The monoclinic and orthorhombic crystals have half a virus particle as the asymmetric unit, while the rhombohedral and cubic crystals have one third of a virus particle. RNA segments organized about the icosahedral twofold axes were present in crystals grown from ammonium sulfate and sodium chloride, as in the canonical I222 crystals (PDB entry 4oq8), but were not observed in crystals grown from sodium bromide and sodium nitrate. Bromide and nitrate ions generally replaced the RNA phosphates present in the I222 crystals, including the phosphates seen on fivefold axes, and were also found at threefold vertices in both the rhombohedral and cubic forms. An additional anion was also found on the fivefold axis 5 Å from the first anion, and slightly outside the capsid in crystals grown from sodium chloride, sodium bromide and sodium nitrate, suggesting that the path along the symmetry axis might be an ion channel. The electron densities for RNA strands at individual icosahedral dyads, as well as at the amino-terminal peptides of protein subunits, exhibited a diversity of orientations, in particular the residues at the ends.

A breakthrough dynamic-osmotic membrane bioreactor/nanofiltration hybrid system for real municipal wastewater treatment and reuse

This study designed a Dynamic-Osmotic membrane bioreactor/nanofiltration (OsMBR/NF) system for municipal wastewater treatment and reuse. Results indicated that a continuously rotating FO module with 60 RPM in Dynamic-OsMBR system could enhance shear stress and reduce cake layer of foulants, leading to higher flux (50%) compared to Traditional-OsMBR during a 40-operation day. A negligible specific reverse salt flux (0.059 G/L) and a water flux of 2.86 LMH were recorded when a mixture of 0.1 M EDTA-2Na/0.1 M Na₂CO₃/0.9 mM Triton114 functioned as draw solution (DS). It was found that the Dynamic-OsMBR/NF hybrid system could effectively remove pollutants (∼98% COD, ∼99% PO₄^3-P, ∼93% NH₄⁺-N, > 99% suspended solids) from wastewater. In short, this developed system can be considered a breakthrough technology as it successfully minimizes membrane fouling by shear force, and achieves high water quality for reuse by two membrane- barriers.

Cyclosporin Structure and Permeability: From A to Z and Beyond

Cyclosporins are natural or synthetic undecapeptides with a wide range of actual and potential pharmaceutical applications. Several members of the cyclosporin compound family have remarkably high passive membrane permeabilities that are not well-described by simple structural metrics. Here we review experimental studies of cyclosporin structure and permeability, including cyclosporin-metal complexes. We also discuss models for the conformation-dependent permeability of cyclosporins and similar compounds. Finally, we identify current knowledge gaps in the literature and provide recommendations regarding future avenues of exploration.

Modulation of the peroxidase-like activity of iron oxide nanoparticles by surface functionalization with polysaccharides and its application for the detection of glutathione

Here, we employed three polysaccharides, such as dextran, hyaluronic acid, and chitosan, for surface modification of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and carried out in-depth investigation to elucidate the effect of surface functionalities on the peroxidase (POD) like activity of IONPs. The affinity of substrates to the catalytic site of IONPs was found to be determined by the surface functional groups and hydration layer of polysaccharide coating on the surface of IONPs. The role of hydration layer was further confirmed by the results that the POD-like activity of IONPs coated with a certain polysaccharide having higher water holding capacity was significantly enhanced by salting-out reagent, such as ammonium chloride that is known to reduce the thickness of hydration layer. Moreover, the excellent catalytic activity of dextran-coated IONPs was successfully applied to develop a highly sensitive sensing system for the detection of glutathione (GSH) with a limit of detection of 2.3 nM.

Prussian Blue Analogues in Aqueous Batteries and Desalination Batteries

In the applications of large-scale energy storage, aqueous batteries are considered as rivals for organic batteries due to their environmentally friendly and low-cost nature. However, carrier ions always exhibit huge hydrated radius in aqueous electrolyte, which brings difficulty to find suitable host materials that can achieve highly reversible insertion and extraction of cations. Owing to open three-dimensional rigid framework and facile synthesis, Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) receive the most extensive attention among various host candidates in aqueous system. Herein, a comprehensive review on recent progresses of PBAs in aqueous batteries is presented. Based on the application in different aqueous systems, the relationship between electrochemical behaviors (redox potential, capacity, cycling stability and rate performance) and structural characteristics (preparation method, structure type, particle size, morphology, crystallinity, defect, metal atom in high-spin state and chemical composition) is analyzed and summarized thoroughly. It can be concluded that the required type of PBAs is different for various carrier ions. In particular, the desalination batteries worked with the same mechanism as aqueous batteries are also discussed in detail to introduce the application of PBAs in aqueous systems comprehensively. This report can help the readers to understand the relationship between physical/chemical characteristics and electrochemical properties for PBAs and find a way to fabricate high-performance PBAs in aqueous batteries and desalination batteries.

Probing Interfacial Effects on Ionization Energies: The Surprising Banality of Anion-Water Hydrogen Bonding at the Air/Water Interface

Liquid microjet photoelectron spectroscopy is an increasingly common technique to measure vertical ionization energies (VIEs) of aqueous solutes, but the interpretation of these experiments is subject to questions regarding sensitivity to bulk versus interfacial solvation environments. We have computed aqueous-phase VIEs for a set of inorganic anions, using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations, with results that are in excellent agreement with experiment regardless of whether the simulation data are restricted to ions at the air/water interface or to those in bulk aqueous solution. Although the computed VIEs are sensitive to ion-water hydrogen bonding, we find that the short-range solvation structure is sufficiently similar in both environments that it proves impossible to discriminate between the two on the basis of the VIE, a conclusion that has important implications for the interpretation of liquid-phase photoelectron spectroscopy. More generally, analysis of the simulation data suggests that the surface activity of soft anions is largely a second or third solvation shell effect, arising from disruption of water-water hydrogen bonds and not from significant changes in first-shell anion-water hydrogen bonding.

Sustainably Cultivating and Harvesting Microalgae through Sedimentation and Forward Osmosis Using Wastes

Cost-effective nutrient sources and dewatering are major obstacles to sustainable, scaled-up cultivation of microalgae. Employing waste resources as sources of nutrients offsets costs for nutrient supplies while adding value through simultaneous waste treatment. Forward osmosis (FO), using simulated reverse osmosis brine, is a low-energy membrane technology that can be employed to efficiently harvest microalgae from a dilute solution. In this study, Scenedesmus obliquus, a green microalga, was cultivated with a fertilizer plant wastewater formula and simulated coal-fired power plant flue gas and then separated through either FO, with reverse osmosis reject model water as the draw solution, or sedimentation. Microalgal batches grown with simulated wastewater removed NH₄ ⁺ within 2 days and reached nitrogen and phosphorus limitation simultaneously on Day 5. Sparging with the flue gas caused S. obliquus to produce significantly greater quantities of extracellular polymeric substances (30.7 ± 1.8 μg mL^-1), which caused flocculation and enhanced settling to an advantageous extent. Five-hour FO trials showed no statistically significant difference (p = 0.65) between water fluxes for cultures grown with simulated flue gas and CO₂-supplemented air (3.0 ± 0.1 and 3.0 ± 0.3 LMH, respectively). Reverse salt fluxes were low for all conditions and, remarkably, the rate of reverse salt flux was -1.9 ± 0.6 gMH when the FO feed was culture grown with simulated flue gas. In this work, S. obliquus was cultivated and harvested with potential waste resources.

Evaluation of Performance of Existing RO Drinking Water Stations in the North Central Province, Sri Lanka

Reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water stations have been introduced to provide safe drinking water for areas with prevailing chronic kidney disease with unknown (CKDu) etiology in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. In this investigation, RO drinking water stations established by community-based organizations (CBO) in the North Central Province (NCP) were examined. Water samples were collected from source, permeate, and concentrate in each station to determine water quality and performance. Furthermore, the operators of the systems were interviewed to evaluate operational and maintenance practices to identify major issues related to the RO systems. Results show that the majority (>93%) of RO systems had higher salt rejection rates (>92%), while water recovery varied from 19.4% to 64%. The removal efficiencies of hardness and alkalinity were averaged at 95.8% and 86.6%, respectively. Most dominant ions such as Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, K⁺, Na⁺, Ba²⁺, Sr²⁺ Cl⁻, F⁻, and SO₄²⁻ showed higher rejections at averaged values of 93.5%, 97.4%, 86.6%, 90.8%, 95.4%, 96.3%, 95.7%, 96.6%, and 99.0%, respectively. Low recovery rates, lower fluoride levels in product water, and membrane fouling were the main challenges. Lack of knowledge and training were the major issues that could shorten the lifespan of RO systems.

Insight into functionally active bacteria in nitrification following Na+ and Mg2+ exposure based on 16S rDNA and 16S rRNA sequencing

Despite increasing interests in osmotic membrane bioreactors, the information regarding the bacterial toxicity effects of reversely transported draw solute (RTDS) is limited. In this study, two representative draw solutes (NaCl and MgCl₂) were used at different concentrations (0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 g/L) to evaluate their toxicity in a continuous nitrifying bioreactor. Notably, Mg²⁺ selectively inhibited the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), which decreased to 11.3% at 7.5 g-Mg²⁺/L. The rRNA-based analysis was more effective than the rDNA-based analysis to elucidate the relationship between active communities of nitrifying bacteria and the actual nitrifying performance. Nitrosomonas europaea, a representative AOB, was vulnerable to Mg²⁺ in comparison to Na⁺. In contrast, the dominant nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB), Nitrobacter winogradskyi and Nitrolancea hollandica, maintained a relevant level of relative abundance for achieving nitrite oxidation after exposure to 10 g/L Na⁺ and Mg²⁺. This fundamental inhibition information of the draw solute can be applied to set the operational regime preventing the critical solute concentration in mixed liquor of nitrifying OMBRs.

Differentiating Solutes with Precise Nanofiltration for Next Generation Environmental Separations: A Review

Selective removal or enrichment of targeted solutes including micropollutants, valuable elements, and mineral scalants from complex aqueous matrices is both challenging and pivotal to the success of water purification and resource recovery from unconventional water resources. Membrane separation with precision at the subnanometer or even subangstrom scale is of paramount importance to address those challenges via enabling "fit-for-purpose" water and wastewater treatment. So far, researchers have attempted to develop novel membrane materials with precise and tailored selectivity by tuning membrane structure and chemistry. In this critical review, we first present the environmental challenges and opportunities that necessitate improved solute-solute selectivity in membrane separation. We then discuss the mechanisms and desired membrane properties required for better membrane selectivity. On the basis of the most recent progress reported in the literature, we examine the key principles of material design and fabrication, which create membranes with enhanced and more targeted selectivity. We highlight the important roles of surface engineering, nanotechnology, and molecular-level design in improving membrane selectivity. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of highly selective NF membranes for practical environmental applications, identifying knowledge gaps that will guide future research to promote environmental sustainability through more precise and tunable membrane separation.

The difference of aggregation mechanism between microplastics and nanoplastics: Role of Brownian motion and structural layer force

In recent years, microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have attracted worldwide attention because of the potential risks they pose to aquatic environments, but there are few studies on the difference of aggregation mechanism between MPs and NPs. In this study, 100 nm and 1 μm polystyrene plastics were selected as models to explore the aggregation mechanism of MPs/NPs under different aquatic environments. The influence of ion species and concentrations on the aggregation behaviors and kinetics were systematically investigated to predict the effects of water quality on the occurrence form of MPs and NPs based on DLVO theory and revised modified Smoluchowski theory. Results showed concentration, valence and hydrated ability of cations jointly affected the aggregation behavior of NPs. The critical coagulation concentration ratio of cations were consistent with Schulze-Hardy rules. But the different aggregation rate coefficients of same valent cations were ascribed to the structural layer force. Anion species played a role in the reaction-controlled regime by producing hydrogen ions to neutralize negative charges on NPs surfaces. Due to the strong Brownian motion and structural layer force, NPs would be stable in freshwater but preferentially aggregated when transport through brackish water, estuaries, eutrophication and high hardness areas and sea water, forming the accumulation hot spots of NPs in the sediment. While for MPs, physical process controlled the aggregation mechanism of them, leading to high stability in natural water and eventually transporting into marine environments. This study provided a theoretical foundation for assessing the transport, distribution, fate and ecological risks of MPs and NPs in realistic aquatic environments.
