Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate and unveil the positive impact of biofloc culture on Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection of Pacific white shrimp by reducing quorum sensing (QS) and virulence gene expression and enhancing shrimp's immunity. The shrimp with an average body weight of 0.50 ± 0.09 g were reared in containers with a volume of 2.5 L, 21 units, and a density of 20 shrimp L-1. The shrimp were cultured for 5 days, with each treatment including biofloc system maintenance with a C/N ratio of 10 and a control treatment without biofloc, followed by a challenge test through immersion using V. parahaemolyticus at densities of 103, 105, and 107 CFU mL-1 initially. The results of the in vitro experiment showed that biofloc suspension can inhibit and disperse biofilm formation, as well as reduce the exo-enzyme activity (amylase, protease, and chitinase) of V. parahaemolyticus. Furthermore, the biofloc treatment significantly reduced the expression of the QS regulatory gene OpaR, the PirB toxin gene, and the virulence factor genes T6SS1 and T6SS2 in both in vitro and in vivo. The biofloc system also increased the expression of shrimp immunity-related genes (LGBP, proPO, SP, and PE) and the survival rate of white shrimp challenged with V. parahaemolyticus.

Abstract
In the present study, we identified and characterized 22 strains of V. anguillarum from 145 samples of mullets (Mugill cephallus) cultured in several fish farms in South Korea. They were subjected to pathogenicity tests, antimicrobial susceptibility test, and broth dilution test to detect virulence markers, antimicrobial resistance, and heavy metal resistance properties. All the isolates showed amylase and caseinase activity, followed by gelatinase (90.9%), DNase (45.5%), and hemolysis activities (α = 81.1% and β = 18.2%). The PCR assay revealed that isolates were positive for VAC, ctxAB, AtoxR, tdh, tlh, trh, Vfh, hupO, VPI, and FtoxR virulence genes at different percentages. All the isolates showed multi-drug resistance properties (MAR index ≥ 0.2), while 100% of the isolates were resistant to oxacillin, ticarcillin, streptomycin, and ciprofloxacin. Antimicrobial resistance genes, qnrS (95.5%), qnrB (86.4%), and StrAB (27.3%), were reported. In addition, 40.9% of the isolates were cadmium-tolerant, with the presence of CzcA (86.4%) heavy metal resistance gene. The results revealed potential pathogenicity associated with V. anguillarum in aquaculture and potential health risk associated with consumer health.

Increased incidence and antimicrobial resistance among Vibrio parahaemolyticus in shellfishes from major fish markets in Cochin, South India: Seafood risk assessment. ANNALS OF ANIMAL SCIENCE 2021. Abstract
Abstract
India remains as a top supplier of value-added seafoods to the global markets. Cochin is one of the leading fishing ports in India contributing to country’s major seafood export. As part of risk assessment, we analyzed the prevalence of multi-drug resistant Vibrio parahaemolyticus; seafood borne gastroenteritis-causing pathogen, in shellfishes collected from major fish markets in Cochin. This bacterial species was initially isolated on Thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose agar and HiCrome™ Vibrio agar, further confirmed by detection of V. parahaemolyticus species-specific toxR gene and by 16S r RNA sequencing. A total of 113 confirmed V. parahaemolyticus were recovered. Almost all the strains exhibited resistance towards three or more antibiotics (multiple-drug resistant) and harbored virulence related exoenzymes especially hemolysin (Kanagawa phenomenon); which is indeed a matter of concern. The multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index of the isolates ranged from 0.21 to 0.57. Furthermore, our results also indicate a substantial increase in the incidence of the pathogen in seafood from the area compared to previous years. This may pose a risk to the local and international consumers of the seafood. Practicing complete hygiene and adequate cooking is strongly recommended. Regular monitoring of aquaculture areas and fish markets is urged to reduce dissemination of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus in seafood and to prevent fatal cases of human infection induced by this species in the country.

Abstract
Global high demand for pacific white shrimp Penaeus vannamei has led to intensified cultivation and a wide range of disease problems, including bacterial diseases due to vibrios. Three presumptive luminescent Vibrio harveyi strains (Vh5, Vh8 and Vh10) were isolated from the hepatopancreas (Vh5) and haemolymph (Vh8 and Vh10) of diseased growout pacific white shrimp from a farm in Setiu, Terengganu, Malaysia, using Vibrio harveyi agar (VHA) differential medium. All three strains were identified as V. harveyi by biochemical characteristics. 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analyses by neighbour-joining, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods showed all three strains in the V. harveyi cluster. All three strains were β-haemolytic and positive for motility, biofilm formation and extracellular products (caseinase, gelatinase, lipase, DNase, amylase and chitinase). Vh10 was subjected to pathogenicity test in pacific white shrimp by immersion challenge and determined to have a LC50 of 6.0 × 108 CFU mL-1 after 168 h of exposure. Antibiotic susceptibility tests showed that all strains were resistant to oxytetracycline (OXT30), oleandomycin (OL15), amoxicillin (AML25), ampicillin (AMP10) and colistin sulphate (CT25) but sensitive to doxycycline (DO30), flumequine (UB30), oxolinic acid (OA2), chloramphenicol (C30), florfenicol (FFC30), nitrofurantoin (F5) and fosfomycin (FOS50). Each strain was also resistant to a slightly different combination of eight other antibiotics, with an overall multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index of 0.40, suggesting prior history of heavy exposure to the antibiotics. Vh10 infection resulted in pale or discoloured hepatopancreas, empty guts, reddening, necrosis and luminescence of uropods, as well as melanized lesions in tail muscle. Histopathological examination showed necrosis of intertubular connective tissue and tubule, sloughing of epithelial cells in hepatopancreatic tubule, haemocytic infiltration, massive vacuolation and loss of hepatopancreatic tubule structure.

Abstract
The present study assessed the occurrence, virulence determinants and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Vibrio spp. isolated from live Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum). A total of 31 Vibrio spp. including 27 V. diabolicus, two V. fluvialis, one V. alginolyticus and one V. antiquarius were isolated and identified. Phenotypic detection of DNase, lipase, phospholipase, amylase and caseinase activities was 100%; and 87% gelatinase, 45% slime production and 6% haemolysin activities were also observed. The prevalence of toxin-related virulence genes for collagenase (94%), toxR (100%), tlh (68%), and VPI (71%) was detected by PCR. Additionally, two V. fluvialis isolates carried F-toxR and hupo genes. Moreover, 61% of the isolates showed multiple antimicrobial resistance indices >0·2. The resistance rates of ampicillin, piperacillin, colistin sulfate, rifampicin, and cephalothin were 100, 81, 71, 77 and 68% respectively. The prevalence of blaCTX-M (87%), blaTEM (55%) and Int1 (90%) genes was observed, whereas blaSHV, strA-strB, tetA, tetB, and aadA2 gene cassette were reported in varying combinations. However, armA, aac(3)-IIa and quinolone resistance genes (qnrA, qnrB, qnrS) were not amplified. Thus, the virulence along with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and other antimicrobial resistance genes in multidrug-resistant Manila clam-borne vibrios may pose a public health threat for consumers. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: In Korea, eating raw seafood is considered a great delicacy. This has negatively affected the public by increasing health issues over the years due to the ingestion of vibrios. For the first time, we could identify Vibrio diabolicus and Vibrio antiquarius in marketed Manila clams in Korea. The prevalent Vibrio diabolicus isolates demonstrated the Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio cholerae homologous virulence genes (toxR, tlh, and VPI). Additionally, the abundance of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and integron (IntI1) harboured by Manila clam-borne vibrios elucidate the potential health risk for consumers and may complicate health treatments in the case of infection.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the incidence, virulence and antibiotic properties in Vibrio spp. isolated from cockles (Tegillarca granosa) marketed in Korea. A total of 32 Vibrio spp. isolates including V. parahaemolyticus (n = 4), V. alginolyticus (n = 11), V. diabolicus (n = 14) and V. harveyi (n = 3) were detected using gyrB sequencing. The phenotypic pathogenicity revealed that the DNase, amylase and phospholipase activities were 100%, while lipase, slime production, gelatinase and caseinase were detected in 72, 88, 88 and 81% of the isolates respectively. The PCR amplification for the detection of V. parahaemolyticus species-specific tdh, tlh, trh and toxR genes were positive in 4 (13%), 16 (50%), 0 (0%) and 4 (13%) isolates respectively. The V. alginolytuicus species-specific tdh, tlh, trh, toxR and vac genes were carried by 15 (47%), 29 (91%), 0 (0%), 15 (47%) and 25 (78%) of the isolates respectively. In addition, multidrug resistance was observed by 27 (84%) isolates, whereas higher resistant rates were observed against ampicillin, piperacillin, streptomycin and cephalothin. The occurrence of blaCTX (78%), blaTEM (40%), blaSHV (22%) and aac(6')-Ib (94%) were prevalent, while strAB, tetB, aphAI-IAB, intl1 and aadA1 gene cassettes were also detected. The results signify the potential health risks resulting from the consumption of raw cockles in Korea. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Vibrios are well known to cause human infections following consumption of raw or undercooked seafood. This phenomenon has undoubtedly increased the number of health issues over the past few years in Korea. Among the identified Vibrio spp., we could detect V. diabolicus and V. harveyi for the first time in marketed cockles in Korea. The presence of species-specific genes (tdh-VA, tlh-VP, tlh-VA and toxR-VA) in V. diabolicus exhibits the close genetic affinity among V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus. Furthermore, the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and other antibiotic resistance genes along with multidrug resistance signifies the potential threat for consumers.
