Abstract
Blood constituents labeled with technetium-99m (99mTc) have been used in nuclear medicine procedures and drugs are capable to interfere on this labeling. Lantana camara (lantana) has medicinal properties and it has been used in folk medicine. The aim is to verify the effect of a lantana extract on the labeling of blood constituents with 99mTc. Blood of rats was incubated with extract, stannous chloride and 99mTc, as sodium pertechnetate. Plasma (P) and blood cells (BC) were isolated, also precipitated with trichloroacetic acid and soluble (SF) and insoluble fractions (IF) were separated. The % of radioactivity (%ATI) in these samples was calculated. Samples of labeled BC were washed and the %ATI maintained (%ATI-M) in the BC was determined. The results showed that lantana extract decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the IF-P from 70.24 +/- 2.59 to 11.95 +/- 3.07. This effect was not observed in the BC and IF-BC. The BC-%ATI-M was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in all concentrations tested when the BC was washed. This fact was not observed in the control. Substances present on the extract should have redoxi action decreasing the concentration of the stannous ion and this condition could justify the effect on the IF-P. The results about the BC-%ATI-M should indicate a possible effect on the transport of ions through the erythrocyte membrane.

Abstract
PURPOSE: To evaluate the biodistribution of sodium pertecnetate (Na99mTcO4) in organs and tissues, the morphometry of remnant intestinal mucosa and ponderal evolution in rats subjected to massive resection of the small intestine. METHODS: Twenty-one Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups of 7 animals each. The short bowel (SB) group was subjected to massive resection of the small intestine; the control group (C) rats were not operated on, and soft intestinal handling was performed in sham rats. The animals were weighed weekly. On the 30th postoperative day, 0.l mL of Na99mTcO4, with mean activity of 0.66 MBq was injected intravenously into the orbital plexus. After 30 minutes, the rats were killed with an overdose of anesthetic, and fragments of the liver, spleen, pancreas, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, thyroid, lung, heart, kidney, bladder, muscle, femur and brain were harvested. The biopsies were washed with 0.9% NaCl.,The radioactivity was counted using Gama Counter WizardTM 1470, PerkinElmer. The percentage of radioactivity per gram of tissue (%ATI/g) was calculated. Biopsies of the remaining jejunum were analysed by HE staining to obtain mucosal thickness. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test for multiple comparisons were used, considering p<0.05 as significant. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in %ATI/g of the Na99mTcO4 in the organs of the groups studied (p>0.05). An increase in the weight of the SB rats was observed after the second postoperative week. The jejunal mucosal thickness of the SB rats was significantly greater than that of C and sham rats (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: In rats with experimentally-produced short bowel syndrome, an adaptive response by the intestinal mucosa reduced weight loss. The biodistribution of Na99mTcO4 was not affected by massive intestinal resection, suggesting that short bowel syndrome is not the cause of misleading interpretation, if an examination using this radiopharmaceutical is indicated.

Abstract
We studied the influence of a commercial extract of Paullinia cupana (guarana) on the binding of technetium-99m-dimercaptosuccinic acid ((99m)Tc-DMSA) on blood constituents. Plasma (P) and blood cells (BC) from Wistar rats (control and treated) were separated. P and BC were precipitated with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or ammonium sulphate (AS) and soluble (SF) and insoluble fractions (IF) isolated. The percentage of incorporated radioactivity (%ATI) in each fraction was determined. The treatment influenced the %ATI in IF-P and in IF-BC isolated by TCA precipitation.

Abstract
Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb) has been used as a medicinal herb. Several biological properties have been associated with this extract, especially, in the increase of the blood flow, in the action as platelet activating factor antagonism and in the prevention of the membrane against the damage caused by free radicals. Radiobiocomplexes have been utilized in various nuclear medicine procedures helping in the diagnosis and/or treatment of human diseases. Many substances have been reported to affect the bioavailability of different radiobiocomplexes. The aim of this work was to evaluate the possible influence of an EGb on the bioavailability of the sodium pertechnetate (99mTcO4Na) and on the morphometry of some organs isolated from rats. These animals were treated with EGb and 99mTcO4Na was injected. The animals were sacrificed, the organs isolated, counted in a well counter and the percentage of radioactivity per gram of each organ was calculated. The results showed that EGb decreased the uptake of the 99mTcO4Na in the duodenum (P<0.05). Moreover, morphometric analysis has revealed significant modifications (P<0.05) on kidney, liver and duodenum due to the cited treatment. It is speculated that the substances present in the EGb could act directly or generate metabolites capable to promote changes in organs (kidney, liver and duodenum), however, only significant alteration in the uptake of the 99mTcO4Na in the duodenum.

Abstract
Acetaminophen (AAP), acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and dipyrone (DIP) are antipyretic and analgesics drugs that have wide use in health sciences. Some drugs can modify the labeling of blood elements with technetium-99m (99mTc). This work has evaluated the effect of AAP, ASA and DIP on the labeling of the blood elements with 99mTc. Blood was incubated with different concentrations of the drugs before the 99mTc-labeled process. Plasma (P), blood cells (BC), insoluble (IF-P, IF-BC) and soluble (SF-P, SF-BC) fractions were separated and percentage of radioactivity (%ATI) in each fraction was determined. Data have shown that the antipyretic drugs used in this study did not significantly modify the fixation of 99mTc on the blood elements when the experiments were carried out with the doses usually used in human beings. Although the experiments were carried out with rats, it is possible to suggest that AAP, ASA or DIP should not interfere with the procedures in nuclear medicine involving the labeling of blood elements with 99mTc.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: Avaliar o efeito de um extrato de hipérico (Hypericum perforatum) na marcação de elementos sanguíneos com tecnécio-99m (99mTc) e na biodisponibilidade do radiofármaco pertecnetato de sódio em ratos Wistar. MÉTODOS: Sangue (heparinizado) de ratos Wistar é incubado com um extrato de hipérico, com cloreto estanoso e a seguir com Tc-99m, como pertecnetato de sódio (99mTcO4Na). Plasma (P) e células (CS) são isolados por centrifugação. Amostras de P e CS também são precipitadas com ácido tricloroacético 5%, e separadas as frações solúveis (FS-P e FS-CS) e insolúveis (FI-P e FI-CS). Para a análise da biodistribuição, 0,3 mL do radiofármaco 99mTcO4Na foi administrada em ratos Wistar que receberam por gavagem extrato ou salina (NaCl 0,9%) por 15 dias. Após 10 minutos os animais foram sacrificados e os órgãos isolados para contagem da atividade radioativa. RESULTADOS: O extrato de hipérico reduziu de forma significativa (P<0,05) a %ATI ligada às células, à fração insolúvel celular e à fração insolúvel do plasma. A biodistribuição foi diminuída significativamente (P<0,01) no osso, no músculo e na tireóide. No pâncreas o percentual de radioatividade aumentou significativamente (P<0,05). CONCLUSÃO: No extrato vegetal estudado podem existir substâncias que oxidariam o íon estanoso, reduzindo a fixação do 99mTc às hemácias e proteínas plasmáticas e celulares. Da mesma forma poderiam produzir alterações metabólicas com conseqüente influência na captação do radiofármaco pertecnetato de sódio no osso, músculo, pâncreas e tireóide.

Abstract
Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb) is a phytotherapeutic agent used for the treatment of ischemic and neurological disorders. Because the action of this important extract is not fully known, assays using different biological systems need to be performed. Red blood cells (RBC) are labeled with technetium-99m (Tc-99m) and used in nuclear medicine. The labeling depends on a reducing agent, usually stannous chloride (SnCl2). We assessed the effect of different concentrations of EGb on the labeling of blood constituents with Tc-99m, as sodium pertechnetate (3.7 MBq), and on the mobility of a plasmid DNA treated with SnCl2 (1.2 microg/ml) at room temperature. Blood was incubated with EGb before the addition of SnCl2 and Tc-99m. Plasma (P) and RBC were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid, and soluble (SF-P and SF-RBC) and insoluble (IF-P and IF-RBC) fractions were isolated. The plasmid was incubated with Egb, SnCl2 or EGb plus SnCl2 and agarose gel electrophoresis was performed. The gel was stained with ethidium bromide and the DNA bands were visualized by fluorescence in an ultraviolet transilluminator system. EGb decreased the labeling of RBC, IF-P and IF-RBC. The supercoiled form of the plasmid was modified by treatment with SnCl2 and protected by 40 mg/ml EGb. The effect of EGb on the tested systems may be due to its chelating action with the stannous ions and/or pertechnetate or to the capability to generate reactive oxygen species that could oxidize the stannous ion.
