Abstract
Essential oils (EOs), which are plant-oriented anti-biofilm agents, are extensively encapsulated by cyclodextrins to overcome their aqueous solubility and chemical instability, and achieve slow release during long-term storage. However, the biological activities of EOs decreased after initial encapsulation in CDs. In this study, modified-β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) were screened as wall materials to maintained the initial anti-biofilm effect of pure CEO. The inhibitory and bactericidal activities of CEO encapsulated in five types of β-CDs with different substituents (primary hydroxyl, maltosyl, hydroxypropyl, methyl, and carboxymethyl) against Staphylococcus aureus biofilm were evaluated. Crystal violet assay and 3D-View observations suggested that CEO and its inclusion complexes (CEO-ICs) inhibited Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation through the inhibition of colonising spreading, exopolysaccharide synthesis, and cell surface properties. Molecular docking revealed the causes of the decrease in the anti-biofilm effect after encapsulation, and quantitative structure-activity relationship assays provided MIC and MBIC prediction equation for modified-β-cyclodextrins inclusion complexes. Maltosyl-β-CD was screened as the best wall material to retained the anti-biofilm activities as pure cinnamon essential oil in initial stage, and its inclusion complexes can effectively inhibited biofilm formation in milk. This study provides a theoretical guidance for the selection β-CDs to encapsulate CEO as plant-oriented anti-biofilm agents to inhibit bacterial biofilm formation.

Abstract
The residue after sieving (“dust”) from the willow gentian underground parts is an unexploited herbal tea by-product, although it contains valuable bioactive compounds. Cyclodextrins as efficient green co-solvents, cage molecules, and multifunctional excipients could improve the extraction and contribute to the added value of the resulting extracts. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal conditions for the extraction of gentiopicroside, isogentisin, and total phenolics (TPC) from willow gentian “dust” using ultrasound-assisted water extraction coupled with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD). The influence of extraction temperature (X1: 20–80 °C), time (X2: 20–50 min), and HPβCD concentration (X3: 2–4% w/v) was analyzed employing the response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal extraction conditions for simultaneously maximizing the extraction yield of all monitored responses were X1: 74.89 °C, X2: 32.57 min, and X3: 3.01% w/v. The experimentally obtained response values under these conditions (46.96 mg/g DW for gentiopicroside, 0.51 mg/g DW for isogentisin, and 12.99 mg GAE/g DW for TPC) were in close agreement with those predicted, thus confirming the suitability and good predictive accuracy of the developed RSM models. Overall, the developed extraction system could be an applicable alternative strategy to improve the extraction of bioactive compounds from the underutilized “dust” of willow gentian underground parts.

Abstract
The widening gap between the supply and demand for meat products has increased the need to produce plant-based meat analogs as protein sources. Meat analogs are principally composed of soy-based textured vegetable proteins. Despite ongoing technical developments, one of the unresolved challenges for plant-based meat analogs is the off-flavor from soy, which limits their consumer acceptability. Among the various methods developed for overcoming this challenge, masking the beany flavors with cyclodextrins (CDs) is an attractive, cost-effective, and safe strategy. However, the current established CD treatment method does not meet the requirement for a clean-label. This study aimed to develop more acceptable off-flavor-masking technologies for plant-based patties for modern clean-label preferences using enzymatic methods. We used the cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGT), “Amano,” as a commercially available food-grade CGT. The CGT-catalyzed reaction in plant-based patties yielded 17.1 g/L CD. As CGT could yield sufficient CD in the patties, we investigated whether CDs produced by CGT could mask the off-flavors released from the plant-based patties. The CGT-treated patties had significantly lower volatilization amounts of the known beany off-flavor-generating compounds compared to the non-treated patties. Moreover, CGT treatment improved the texture of the patties and increased their water- and oil-holding capacity. As CGT is rendered inactive after cooking, it would not be considered an additive. These findings indicated that CDs produced by the CGT reaction could effectively mask off-flavors of meat analogs and improve their physical properties while meeting clean-label requirements.

Abstract
We present a data-driven approach to unveil the pharmaceutical technologies of cyclodextrins (CDs) by analyzing a dataset of CD pharmaceutical patents. First, we implemented network science techniques to represent CD patents as a single structure and provide a framework for unsupervised detection of keywords in the patent dataset. Guided by those keywords, we further mined the dataset to examine the patenting trends according to CD-based dosage forms. CD patents formed complex networks, evidencing the supremacy of CDs for solubility enhancement and how this has triggered cutting-edge applications based on or beyond the solubility improvement. The networks exposed the significance of CDs to formulate aqueous solutions, tablets, and powders. Additionally, they highlighted the role of CDs in formulations of anti-inflammatory drugs, cancer therapies, and antiviral strategies. Text-mining showed that the trends in CDs for aqueous solutions, tablets, and powders are going upward. Gels seem to be promising, while patches and fibers are emerging. Cyclodextrins' potential in suspensions and emulsions is yet to be recognized and can become an opportunity area. This is the first unsupervised/supervised data-mining approach aimed at depicting a landscape of CDs to identify trending and emerging technologies and uncover opportunity areas in CD pharmaceutical research.

Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are biocompatible, cyclic oligosaccharides that are widely used in various industrial applications and have intriguing interfacial science properties. While CD molecules typically have low surface activity, they are capable of stabilizing emulsions by inclusion complexation of oil-phase components at the oil/water interface, which results in Pickering emulsion formation. Such surfactant-free formulations have gained considerable attention in recent years, owing to their enhanced physical stability, improved tolerability, and superior environmental compatibility compared to conventional, surfactant-based emulsions. In this review, we critically describe the latest insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in CD stabilization of Pickering emulsions, including covering practical aspects such as methods to prepare CD-based Pickering emulsions, lipid encapsulation, and relevant stability issues. In addition, the rheological and textural features of CD-based Pickering emulsions are discussed and particular attention is focused on promising examples for drug delivery, cosmetic, and nutraceutical applications. The functionality of currently developed CD-based Pickering emulsions is also summarised, including examples such as antifungal uses, and we close by discussing emerging possibilities to utilize the molecular encapsulation of CD-based emulsions for translational medicine applications in the antiviral and antibacterial spaces.

Abstract
Surface instability of membranes not only plays a critical role in the morphological evolution observed in natural and biological systems, but also underpins a promising way for the bottom-up fabrication of novel functional materials. There is an urgent need for the design of novel building blocks into membranes, and the understanding of the abilities of the membranes to cope with mechanical stress is therefore of considerable importance. Here, we design membranes built with cyclodextrin-oil inclusion complexes, which are formed spontaneously at the oil/water interface by a self-assembly process. We select the oil phases of distinct molecular structures, namely, branched triglyceride oil and straight-chain n-dodecane, and examine the patterns in which the membranes adopt morphological transitions to buffer stress. We discuss two possible buffering scenarios for the behaviors observed in view of structural arrest and interfacial rheology, which are most closely linked to the rigidity of the membranes. The membranes represent fascinating models and shed some light on the origin of arrested stress relaxation.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin (CD)-based emulsions have a characteristic of rapid droplet flocculation, which limits their application as functional material templates, so it is very important to improve the stability of CD-based emulsions. In this study, we select bacterial cellulose (BC) as a nonadsorbing inhibitor to prevent flocculation of CD-based emulsions. We map a phase diagram of the aqueous dispersions of CD inclusion complexes (ICs) and BC from morphological observations and investigate the effects of BC on properties of the IC-laden films. We further explore the effects of BC concentration on the stability of the CD-based emulsions and investigate rheological behavior of the emulsions through large-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments. It shows that BC can effectively suppress the flocculation of CD-based emulsion droplets even at a concentration as low as 0.01 wt %. We propose that BC has dual effects from bulk and interfacial contributions on increasing emulsion stability. At low concentrations, BC mainly results in higher packing density of ICs on the emulsion droplet surface through excluded volume repulsion, and at high concentrations, BC creates a network structure that confines the motion of emulsion droplets and retards flocculation.

Abstract
Objective The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of hydroxypropyl‐β‐cyclodextrin (HP‐β‐CD) in cosmetic submicron emulsions and submicron emulsion gels on physiological skin parameters during regular application in a clinical set‐up. Methods Formulation morphology was investigated using cryo‐transmission electron microscopy. Stability of the employed formulations was determined by photon correlation spectroscopy, measurement of pH and rheological properties. Effect on physiological skin parameters was evaluated during regular application over four weeks in a parallel group study (n = 15, healthy forearm skin) with a Corneometer, Sebumeter, skin‐pH‐Meter, Aquaflux and an Epsilon sensor. Confocal Raman spectroscopy was employed to monitor urea and NMF levels. Results Both submicron emulsions and gels showed satisfying storage stability irrespective of cyclodextrin incorporation. No statistically significant effects on skin barrier function and any of the observed parameters were obtained, indicating good skin tolerability of all tested formulations. Conclusion Results suggest good skin tolerability of the developed cosmetic submicron emulsions and gels with HP‐β‐CD.

Abstract
The search for a wide spectrum of antimicrobial agents that can avoid resistance while maintaining reasonable side effects has led to ozonated oils experiencing an increase in scientific interest and clinical applications. The treatment of vegetable oils with ozone leads to the creation of a reservoir of ozone that slowly releases into the skin thanks to the fact that ozone can be held as ozonides of unsaturated fatty acids. Interest in the use of ozonated oils has meant that several ozonated-vegetable-oil-containing products have been commercialized as cosmetic and pharmaceutical agents, and in innovative textile products with antibacterial activity. New approaches to the delivery of ozonated oils have very recently appeared in an attempt to improve their characteristics and reduce drawbacks, such as an unpleasant odor, high viscosity and undesired effects on skin, including irritation and rashes. The present review focuses on the current status of delivery agents that use ozonated oils as antimicrobial agents in topical (dermal, skin, and soft tissues) treatments. Challenges and future opportunities for these delivery systems will also be discussed.

Abstract
Rapid droplet aggregation in cyclodextrin (CD)-stabilized emulsions limits their practical use as material templates. Herein, we formulate mixtures of submicron CD-based emulsion droplets suspended in aqueous solutions of methylcellulose (MC) with various concentrations and molecular weights. We evaluate the effects of MC on the microstructure and stability of the emulsions using different techniques including optical microscopy, laser particle analysis, confocal laser scanning microscopy and multiple light scattering, explore the rheological behavior of the emulsions through large amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, and study the viscoelastic nonlinearities of the emulsions as a function of strain and strain-rate space through nondimensional elastic and viscous Lissajous-Bowditch plots. It is demonstrated that the emulsion droplets are present in the form of small clusters and their size is almost independent of MC concentration and molecular weight. The clustering pattern is also supported by the changes in viscoelastic properties of the emulsions and the intracycle nonlinear behavior of the Lissajous-Bowditch plots. We propose for the first time that glass-like dynamic arrest takes place with the formation of small equilibrium droplet clusters in the situation where the CD-based emulsion droplets are forced by depletion flocculation and kinetic trapping simultaneously exerted by MC.

Abstract
The main principles of green chemistry and engineering were extended to pharmaceutical formulations to prepare eco-friendly surfactant-free dry emulsion tablets (SFDETs) devoid of solvents or synthetic surfactants. Surfactant-free emulsions were stabilized by in situ cyclodextrins/sweet almond oil inclusion complexes and assessed for creaming stability. Formulation variables' effects on the emulsion droplet size and tadalafil solubility were studied using 22 × 3 factorial design. The emulsions exhibited nanometric and micrometric droplet sizes. The optimized nanoemulsion was loaded with tadalafil, morphologically evaluated, and utilized for preparing lyophilized SFDETs using different gelatin/Pearlitol® ratios. The tablets were characterized and the selected formulation was subjected to storage for 6 months. The emulsions prepared using β-cyclodextrin or higher concentrations of α-cyclodextrin showed little or no phase separation. Statistical analysis revealed significant influence of cyclodextrin type and amount on droplet size, while cyclodextrin type and oil volume exhibited significant effect on drug solubility. Morphological examination revealed non-aggregated spherical emulsion droplets. The prepared tablets showed satisfactory mechanical strength, short disintegration times, and enhanced drug dissolution. The selected tablet formulation (gelatin/Pearlitol®, 4:2 w/w) showed acceptable stability at 25°C/60% relative humidity. An overall conclusion claims that the absence of surfactants is expected to minimize the proposed tablets' in vivo toxicity and environmental concerns.

Abstract
Recent advances in life science technology have prompted the need to develop microcapsule delivery systems that can encapsulate many different functional or active materials such as drugs, peptides, and live cells, etc. The encapsulation technology is now commonly used in medicine, agriculture, food, and other many fields. The application of biodegradable microcapsule systems can not only effectively prevent the degradation of core materials in the body or the biological environment, but also improve the bioavailability, control the release and prolong the halftime or storage of core active materials. Various wall materials, preparation methods, encapsulation processes, and release mechanisms are covered in this review, as well as several main factors including pH values, temperatures, particle sizes, and additives, which can strongly influence the encapsulation efficiency, the strength, and release of microcapsules. The improvement of coating materials, preparation techniques, and challenges are also highlighted, as well as application prospects.

Abstract
The effect of emulsifiers, emulsion stabilizer (maltodextrin, MD), and β-cyclodextrin (BCD) on physical and oxidative properties of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions (5%, 20%, 40% of oil, w/w) was investigated. Four different emulsifiers were selected based on their structure: two types of protein-based emulsifiers (sodium caseinate, SC; and whey protein isolate, WPI), and two types low molecular weight emulsifiers (LMEWs: lecithin, LEC; and Citrem, CITREM). Physical and oxidative stability of emulsions prepared with these emulsifiers together with MD were compared based on their creaming index (CI), viscosity, droplet size, zeta potential, peroxide and p-anisidine values. LMWE-stabilized emulsions (with LEC or CITREM) had better creaming stability with lower droplet sizes whereas protein-stabilized emulsions (with SC or WPI) had higher viscosities. Droplet size was the lowest when CITREM was used, which increased with increasing oil concentration for all emulsifiers. Formulation with the lowest CI value and droplet size was considered to be more prone to oxidation; therefore, a 1:1 (w/w) combination of CITREM with BCD was used to stabilize the emulsions to improve the oxidative as well as physical stability. Added BCD significantly increased the storage stability of emulsions by reducing CI and droplet size values with a simultaneous increase in the viscosity, both at room temperature and at storage conditions (at 4 and 55 o C). However, the oxidative as well as physical stability of BCD added emulsions were not improved, neither toward heat- nor light-induced lipid oxidation. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This work investigated the effects of emulsifiers and dextrins on the stability of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. Both maltodextrin (MD) and β-cyclodextrin (BCD) addition resulted in enhanced physical stability, the latter being more effective. The findings can be applied to formulate emulsions with improved shelf life within the limits of allowed daily intake (ADI) level of BCD (5 mg/kg bw per day).

Abstract
Background: Galium is a plant rich in iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, anthraquinones, and small amounts of essential oils and vitamin C. Recent works showed the antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and antioxidant activity of this plant genus. Methods: For the determination of the multicomponent phenolic pattern, liquid phase microextraction procedures were applied, combined with HPLC-PDA instrument configuration in five Galium species aerial parts (G. verum, G. album, G. rivale, G. pseudoaristatum, and G. purpureum). Dispersive Liquid–Liquid MicroExtraction (DLLME) with NaCl and NAtural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NADES) medium and Ultrasound-Assisted (UA)-DLLME with β-cyclodextrin medium were optimized. Results: The optimal DLLME conditions were found to be: 10 mg of the sample, 10% NaCl, 15% NADES or 1% β-cyclodextrin as extraction solvent—400 μL of ethyl acetate as dispersive solvent—300 μL of ethanol, vortex time—30 s, extraction time—1 min, centrifugation at 12000× g for 5 min. Conclusions: These results were compared with microwave-assisted extraction procedures. G. purpureum and G. verum extracts showed the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content, respectively. The most potent extract in terms of antioxidant capacity was obtained from G. purpureum, whereas the extract obtained from G. album exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect against tyrosinase.

Abstract
Cyclodextrin complexation is a wise strategy to enhance aqueous solubility of water-insoluble drugs. However, the aggregation mechanism of drug-cyclodextrin complexes is still unclear. This research aimed to investigate the molecular aggregation mechanism of glipizide/cyclodextrin complexation by the combination of experimental and modeling methods. Binding free energies between glipizide and cyclodextrins from modeling calculations were higher than those by the phase solubility diagram method. Both experimental and modeling results showed that methylated-β-cyclodextrin exhibited the best solubilizing capability to glipizide. Size-measurement results confirmed the aggregation between glipizide and all four cyclodextrins in high concentrations. Glipizide/γ-cyclodextrin and glipizide/β-cyclodextrin complexes showed stronger aggregation trend than HP-β-cyclodextrin and methylated-β-cyclodextrin. The substituted groups in the rim of HP-β-cyclodextrin and methylated-β-cyclodextrin lead to weak aggregation. This research provided us a clear molecular mechanism of glipizide/cyclodextrin complexation and aggregation. This research will also benefit the formulation development of cyclodextrin solubilization.

Abstract
This study aimed to encapsulate Celastrus paniculatus seed oil (CPSO) in 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) cavities and investigate their biological activity, physicochemical stability, and skin penetration by vertical Franz diffusion cells of the CPSO-HPβCD inclusion complex formulations. For biological activity studies-including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging, metal ion chelating, and inhibition of lipid and tyrosinase inhibition activities-the CPSO-HPβCD inclusion complex exhibited lower inhibition activity than free CPSO. CPSO-HPβCD dispersion, serum, and gel formulations were prepared. All formulations containing the CPSO-HPβCD inclusion complex showed no significant changes in physical characteristics after three months' storage. The percentages of oleic acid remaining in all formulations were over 80% of the initial amount during a three-month stability study. For the skin-penetration study, compared to other formulations, the CPSO-HPβCD serum formulation exhibited the highest cumulative amount of oleic acid in the whole skin and flux through receptor fluid, after six hours, of 32.75 ± 1.25 µg/cm² and 1.02 ± 0.15 µg/cm²/h, respectively. The CPSO-HPβCD serum formulation also showed the proper viscosity. Hence, the CPSO-HPβCD inclusion complex will be beneficial for the further development of cosmeceutical products.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health problem. The use of ethionamide (ETH), a main second line drug, is associated to severe toxic side-effects due to its low therapeutic index. In this challenging context, "booster" molecules have been synthetized to increase the efficacy of ETH. However, the administration of ETH/booster pair is mostly hampered by the low solubility of these drugs and the tendency of ETH to crystallize. Here, ETH and a poorly water-soluble booster, so-called BDM43266, were simultaneously loaded in polymeric β-cyclodextrin nanoparticles (pβCyD NPs) following a "green" protocol. The interaction of ETH and BDM43266 with pβCyD NPs was investigated by complementary techniques. Remarkably, the inclusion of ETH and BDM43266 pβCyD NPs led to an increase of their apparent solubility in water of 10- and 90-fold, respectively. Competition studies of ETH and BDM43266 for the CyD cavities of pβCyD NPs corroborated the fact that the drugs did not compete with each other, confirming the possibility to simultaneously co-incorporate them in NPs. The drug-loaded NP suspensions could be filtered through 0.22μm filters. Finally, the drug-loaded NPs were passed through a Microsprayer® to evaluate the feasibility to administer pβCyD NPs by pulmonary route. Each spray delivered a constant amount of both drugs and the NPs were totally recovered after passage through the Microsprayer®. Abstract
The oral administration of proteins is a current challenge to be faced in the field of therapeutics. There is currently much interest in nanocarriers since they can enhance oral bioavailability. For lack of a clear definition, the key characteristics of nanoparticles have been highlighted. Specific surface area is one of these characteristics and represents a huge source of energy that can be used to control the biological fate of the carrier. The review discusses nanocarrier stability, mucus interaction and absorption through the intestinal epithelium. The protein corona, which has raised interest over the last decade, is also discussed. The universal ideal surface is a myth and over-coated carriers are not a solution either. Besides, common excipients can be useful on several targets. The suitable design should rather take into account the composition, structure and behavior of unmodified nanomaterials.

Abstract
The ability to form transient, self-assembling solid networks that 'cocoon' emulsion droplets on-demand allows new possibilities in the rapidly expanding area of microfluidic droplet-based materials science. In this communication, we demonstrate the spontaneous formation of extended colloidal networks that encase large microfluidic droplet ensembles, thus completely arresting droplet motion and effectively isolating each droplet from others in the ensemble. To do this, we employ molecular inclusion complexes of β-cyclodextrin, which spontaneously form and assemble into colloidal solids at the droplet interface and beyond, via the outward diffusion of a guest molecule (dichloromethane) from the droplets. We illustrate the advantage of such transient network-based droplet stabilization in the area of pharmaceutical crystallization, where we are able to fabricate monodisperse spherical crystalline microgranules of 5-methyl-2-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]-3-thiophenecarbonitrile (ROY), a model hydrophobic drug, with a dramatic enhancement of particle properties compared to conventional methods.

Abstract
This paper explores structural, interfacial and thermal properties of two types of Pickering emulsions containing α-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes: on one hand, emulsions were obtained between aqueous solutions of α-cyclodextrin and different oils (fatty acids, olive oil, silicone oil) and on the other hand, emulsions were obtained between these oils, water and micro or nano-platelet suspensions with inclusion complexes of hydrophobically-modified polysaccharides. The emulsions exhibit versatile properties according to the molecular architecture of the oils. Experiments were performed by microcalorimetry, X-ray diffraction and confocal microscopy. The aptitude of oil molecules to be threaded in α-cyclodextrin cavity is a determining parameter in emulsification and thermal stability. The heat flow traces and images showed dissolution, cooperative melting and de-threading of inclusion complexes which take place progressively, ending at high temperatures, close or above 100°C. Another important feature observed in the emulsions with micro-platelets is the partial substitution of the guest molecules occurring at room temperature at the oil/water interfaces without dissolution, possibly by a diffusion mechanism of the oil. Accordingly, the dissolution and the cooperative melting temperatures of the inclusion crystals changed, showing marked differences upon the type of guest molecules. The enthalpies of dissolution of crystals were measured and compared with soluble inclusions.

Abstract
In this paper, we focused on the development of nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) for dermal application. The NLC matrix was designed as a protective reservoir of biological active compounds that naturally occur in domestic fruit seed oils. Over the years, emulsions, as a popular physicochemical form of personal care products, were refined in order to obtain the best possible penetration into the skin of any bioactive compound introduced in the formulation, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In fact, the bioactive components are useful only if they are able to penetrate the skin unchanged. Therefore, an alternate way to deliver naturally occurring PUFAs is needed. NLCs present a novel delivery and protection system for the PUFAs. The cold pressed fruit seed oils obtained from waste material were used in this paper: blackcurrant, blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and plum. Thermodynamic (DSC) and structural techniques ((1)H NMR) were applied in order to characterize the obtained systems in terms of seed oil incorporation into the NLC, and oxidative stability tests were used to confirm the protective quality of the systems. During the formulation optimization process the most stable nanosuspension with the best seed oil incorporation was a mixture of 4% nonionic emulsifiers, 88% water and 6% lipids with a ratio of 6:2, wax:oil. The oxidative stability tests showed that the NLC was an effective method of protection of the PUFAs.

Abstract
The stability of cyclodextrin (CD)-based emulsions is attributed to the formation of a solid film of oil-CD complexes at the oil/water interface. However, competitive interactions between CDs and other components at the interface still need to be understood. Here we develop two different routes that allow the incorporation of a model protein (sodium caseinate, SC) into emulsions based on β-CD. One route is the components adsorbed simultaneously from a mixed solution to the oil/water interface (route I), and the other is SC was added to a previously established CD-stabilized interface (route II). The adsorption mechanism of β-CD modified by SC at the oil/water interface is investigated by rheological and optical methods. Strong sensitivity of the rheological behavior to the routes is indicated by both steady-state and small-deformation oscillatory experiments. Possible β-CD/SC interaction models at the interface are proposed. In route I, the protein, due to its higher affinity for the interface, adsorbs strongly at the interface with blocking of the adsorption of β-CD and formation of oil-CD complexes. In route II, the protein penetrates and blends into the preadsorbed layer of oil-CD complexes already formed at the interface. The revelation of interfacial assembly is expected to help better understand CD-based emulsions in natural systems and improve their designs in engineering applications.

Abstract
Background: Micelle formation of cholesterol with lecithin and bile salts is a key process for intestinal absorption of lipids. Some dietary fibers commonly used to reduce the lipid content in the body are thought to inhibit lipid absorption by binding to bile salts and decreasing the lipid solubility. Amongst these, α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) is reportedly one of the most powerful dietary fibers for decreasing blood cholesterol. However, it is difficult to believe that α-CD directly removes cholesterol because it has a very low affinity for cholesterol and its mechanism of action is less well understood than those of other dietary fibers. To identify this mechanism, we investigated the interaction of α-CD with lecithin and bile salts, which are essential components for the dissolution of cholesterol in the small intestine, and the effect of α-CD on micellar solubility of cholesterol. Results: α-CD was added to Fed-State Simulated Intestinal Fluid (FeSSIF), and precipitation of a white solid was observed. Analytical data showed that the precipitate was a lecithin and α-CD complex with a molar ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. The micellar solubility of cholesterol in the mixture of FeSSIF and α-CD was investigated, and found to decrease through lecithin precipitation caused by the addition of α-CD, in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, each of several other water-soluble dietary fibers was added to the FeSSIF, and no precipitate was generated. Conclusion: This study suggests that α-CD decreases the micellar solubility of cholesterol in the lumen of the small intestine via the precipitation of lecithin from bile salt micelles by complex formation with α-CD. It further indicates that the lecithin precipitation effect on the bile salt micelles by α-CD addition clearly differs from addition of other water-soluble dietary fibers. The decrease in micellar cholesterol solubility in the FeSSIF was the strongest with α-CD addition.

Abstract
Most of the newly designed drug molecules are lipophilic in nature and often encounter erratic absorption and low bioavailability after oral administration. Finding ways to enhance the absorption and bioavailability of these lipophilic drugs is one of the major challenges that face pharmaceutical industry nowadays. In view of that, the purpose of this review is to shed some light on a novel particulate self-assembling system named "beads" than can act as a safe carrier for delivering lipophilic drugs. The beads are prepared simply by mixing oils with cyclodextrin (CD) aqueous solution in mild conditions. A unique interaction between oil components and CD molecules occurs to form in situ surface-active complexes which are prerequisites for beads formation. This review mainly focuses on the fundamentals of beads preparation through reviewing present, yet scarce, literature. The key methods used for beads characterization are discussed in details. Also, the potential mechanisms by which beads increase the bioavailability of lipophilic drugs are illustrated. Finally, the related research areas that needs to be addressed in future for optimizing this promising delivery system are briefly outlined.

Abstract
A fundamental and systematic study on the fabrication of a supramolecularly assembled nanostructure of an organic ligand-capped CdS nanocrystal (NC) and multiple heptamine β-cyclodextrin ((NH(2))(7)βCD) molecules in aqueous solution has been here reported. The functionalization process of presynthesized hydrophobic CdS NCs by means of (NH(2))(7)βCD has been extensively investigated by using different spectroscopic and structural techniques, as a function of different experimental parameters, such as the composition and the concentration of CD, the concentration of CdS NCs, the nature of the NC surface capping ligand (oleic acid and octylamine), and the organic solvent. The formation of a complex based on the direct coordination of the (NH(2))(7)βCD amine groups at the NC surface has been demonstrated and found responsible for the CdS NC phase transfer process. The amine functional group in (NH(2))(7)βCD and the appropriate combination of pristine capping agent coordinating the NC surface and a suitable solvent have been found decisive for the success of the CdS NC phase transfer process. Furthermore, a layer-by-layer assembly experiment has indicated that the obtained (NH(2))(7)βCD functionalized CdS NCs are still able to perform the host-guest chemistry. Thus, they offer a model of a nanoparticle-based material with molecular receptors, useful for bio applications.

Abstract
Nanoemulsions aimed at dermal drug delivery are usually stabilised by natural lecithins. However, lecithin has a high tendency towards self-aggregation and is prone to chemical degradation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop nanoemulsions with improved structure and long-term stability by employing a natural sucrose ester mixture as sole surfactant. A thorough comparison between the novel sucrose stearate-based nanoemulsions and corresponding lecithin-based nanoemulsions revealed that the sucrose ester is superior in terms of emulsifying efficiency, droplet formation as well as physical and chemical stability. The novel formulations exhibited a remarkably homogeneous structure in cryo TEM investigations, as opposed to the variable structure observed for lecithin-based systems. The in vitro skin permeation rates of lipophilic drugs from sucrose stearate nanoemulsions were comparable to those obtained with their lecithin-based counterparts. Furthermore, it was observed that addition of γ-cyclodextrin led to enhanced skin permeation of the steroidal drug fludrocortisone acetate from 9.99±0.46 to 55.10±3.67 μg cm(-2) after 24 h in the case of sucrose stearate-based systems and from 9.98±0.64 to 98.62±24.89 μg cm(-2) after 24 h in the case of lecithin-based systems. This enhancement effect was significantly stronger in formulations based on lecithin (P<0.05), which indicates that synergistic mechanisms between the surfactant and the cyclodextrin are involved. Cryo TEM images suggest that the cyclodextrin is incorporated into the interfacial film, which might alter drug release rates and improve the droplet microstructure.

Abstract
We performed detailed biophysical studies of transfer of long-chain fatty acids (FAs) from methyl-beta-CD (MBCD) to model membranes (egg-PC vesicles) and cells and the extraction of FA from membranes by MBCD. We used i) fluorescein phosphatidylethanolamine to detect transfer of FA anions arriving in the outer membrane leaflet; ii) entrapped pH dyes to measure pH changes after FA diffusion (flip-flop) across the lipid bilayer; and iii) soluble fluorescent-labeled FA binding protein to measure the concentration of unbound FA in water. FA dissociated from MBCD, bound to the membrane, and underwent flip-flop within milliseconds. In the presence of vesicles, MBCD maintained the aqueous concentration of unbound FA at low levels comparable to those measured with albumin. In studies with cells, addition of oleic acid (OA) complexed with MBCD yielded rapid (seconds) dose-dependent OA transport into 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and HepG2 cells. MBCD extracted OA from cells and model membranes rapidly at concentrations exceeding those required for OA delivery but much lower than concentrations commonly used for extracting cholesterol. Compared with albumin, MBCD can transfer its entire FA load and is less likely to extract cell nutrients and to introduce impurities.
