The use of nonhuman primates in studies of noise injury and treatment

Exposure to prolonged or high intensity noise increases the risk for permanent hearing impairment. Over several decades, researchers characterized the nature of harmful noise exposures and worked to establish guidelines for effective protection. Recent laboratory studies, primarily conducted in rodent models, indicate that the auditory system may be more vulnerable to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) than previously thought, driving renewed inquiries into the harmful effects of noise in humans. To bridge the translational gaps between rodents and humans, nonhuman primates (NHPs) may serve as key animal models. The phylogenetic proximity of NHPs to humans underlies tremendous similarity in many features of the auditory system (genomic, anatomical, physiological, behavioral), all of which are important considerations in the assessment and treatment of NIHL. This review summarizes the literature pertaining to NHPs as models of hearing and noise-induced hearing loss, discusses factors relevant to the translation of diagnostics and therapeutics from animals to humans, and concludes with some of the practical considerations involved in conducting NHP research.

Vocal-tract resonances as indexical cues in rhesus monkeys

Vocal-tract resonances (or formants) are acoustic signatures in the voice and are related to the shape and length of the vocal tract. Formants play an important role in human communication, helping us not only to distinguish several different speech sounds [1], but also to extract important information related to the physical characteristics of the speaker, so-called indexical cues. How did formants come to play such an important role in human vocal communication? One hypothesis suggests that the ancestral role of formant perception--a role that might be present in extant nonhuman primates--was to provide indexical cues [2-5]. Although formants are present in the acoustic structure of vowel-like calls of monkeys [3-8] and implicated in the discrimination of call types [8-10], it is not known whether they use this feature to extract indexical cues. Here, we investigate whether rhesus monkeys can use the formant structure in their "coo" calls to assess the age-related body size of conspecifics. Using a preferential-looking paradigm [11, 12] and synthetic coo calls in which formant structure simulated an adult/large- or juvenile/small-sounding individual, we demonstrate that untrained monkeys attend to formant cues and link large-sounding coos to large faces and small-sounding coos to small faces-in essence, they can, like humans [13], use formants as indicators of age-related body size.

Representation of the voice onset time (VOT) speech parameter in population responses within primary auditory cortex of the awake monkey

Voice onset time (VOT) signifies the interval between consonant onset and the start of rhythmic vocal-cord vibrations. Differential perception of consonants such as /d/ and /t/ is categorical in American English, with the boundary generally lying at a VOT of 20-40 ms. This study tests whether previously identified response patterns that differentially reflect VOT are maintained in large-scale population activity within primary auditory cortex (A1) of the awake monkey. Multiunit activity and current source density patterns evoked by the syllables /da/ and /ta/ with variable VOTs are examined. Neural representation is determined by the tonotopic organization. Differential response patterns are restricted to lower best-frequency regions. Response peaks time-locked to both consonant and voicing onsets are observed for syllables with a 40- and 60-ms VOT, whereas syllables with a 0- and 20-ms VOT evoke a single response time-locked only to consonant onset. Duration of aspiration noise is represented in higher best-frequency regions. Representation of VOT and aspiration noise in discrete tonotopic areas of A1 suggest that integration of these phonetic cues occurs in secondary areas of auditory cortex. Findings are consistent with the evolving concept that complex stimuli are encoded by synchronized activity in large-scale neuronal ensembles.

Salience of Caller Identity in Rhesus Monkey (Macaca mulatta) Coos and Screams: Perceptual Experiments With Human (Homo sapiens) Listeners

Recent evidence from acoustic analysis and playback experiments indicates that adult female rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) coos are individually distinctive but their screams are not. In this study, the authors compared discrimination of individual identity in these sounds by naive human listeners who judged whether 2 sounds had been produced by the same monkey or 2 monkeys. Each of 3 experiments using this same-different design showed significantly better discrimination of vocalizer identity from coos than from screams. Experiment 1 demonstrated the basic finding. Experiment 2 also tested the effect of non-identity-related scream variation, and Experiment 3 added a comparison with human vowel sounds. Outcomes suggest that acoustic structural differences in coos and screams influence salience of caller-identity cues, with significant implications for understanding the functions of these calls.
