Abstract
OBJECTIVE Middle childhood is a critical period for physical, social, behavioral, and cognitive changes. A positive and healthy sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) foundation can minimize SRHR risks, leading to better outcomes. Our objective is to identify effective educational interventions promoting or supporting the SRHR of school-age children in low and middle-income countries. DATA SOURCES Medline, Embase, CINAHL, APA PsycInfo, ERIC, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Education Source, Web of Science, SciELO Citation Index, Global Health, and Sociological Abstract were searched from 2000 to December 2020. STUDY SELECTION Eligible articles had a sample mean age between 5 and 10 years, quantitatively tested the effects of educational interventions against a comparison group, and measured SRHR related outcomes. DATA EXTRACTION Data extracted from the 11 eligible articles were study methods, participant characteristics, interventions and comparisons, outcome measures, and results. RESULTS The review found evidence of significant intervention effects on protective knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and skills for preventing sexual violence and HIV infection. The strongest evidence was for significant improvements in children's knowledge of child sexual abuse prevention concepts and strategies. LIMITATIONS A meta-analysis could not be performed because most studies lacked randomization, included no information on the magnitude of effects, and had inadequate follow-up evaluations to truly assess retention. Only a few studies contributed to findings on protective attitudes, behaviors, and skills against child sexual abuse, gender-based violence, and human immunodeficiency virus infection, as well as physiologic outcome. CONCLUSIONS The educational interventions demonstrated significant improvements in primary school children's protective capacities, especially in their protective knowledge against sexual abuse.

Abstract
A key consideration in planning studies of community-based HIV education programs is identifying a sample size large enough to ensure a reasonable probability of detecting program effects if they exist. Sufficient sample sizes for community- or group-based designs are proportional to the correlation or similarity of individuals within communities. As a result, efficient and effective design requires reasonable a priori estimates of the correlational structure among individuals within communities. In this study, we investigate the degree of correlation among individuals within communities and regions using samples of sixth-grade adolescents from 609 local area district communities and 122 regions in 15 sub-Saharan African nations. We develop nation-specific and international summaries of these correlations using variance partitioning coefficients from multilevel models and subsequently assess the extent to which different types of background variables delineate key sources of these correlations. The results suggest persistent differences among communities and regions and that the degree of correlation among individuals within communities varied considerably by nation. The findings underscore the importance of empirically derived values of design parameters that are anchored in evidence specific to the outcome, nation and context of the planned study.

Abstract
Background Major hospitals in most Chinese cities have the capability to perform HIV testing. However, it is not a routine test for all patients and, as a result, many patients are not aware of their HIV status. To understand the rate of HIV infection and the factors associated with infection, we tested serum to determine HIV status and analyzed factors associated with HIV infection. Methods We collected blood samples from 348,151 patients who visited the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2012. Serum was screened with an ELISA. If the test was positive, we conducted two additional ELISAs: a repeat with the initial kit and one with another kit. If there was a positive result with either of these two ELISA kits, western blotting was performed at Harbin Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results The HIV positivity rate of inpatients significantly increased during the course of this study. HIV infection in patients appeared to differ by sex, age, occupation, marital status, educational level, and route of infection. HIV was more prevalent in men than in women. More than 80% of HIV-positive patients had not received higher (>12 years) education. From 2007 to 2012, HIV-positive patients were mainly infected through sexual transmission. For sexually acquired infections, the rate of HIV infections through homosexual contact has increased rapidly in recent years, and ranged from 36.4% to 65.1%. Conclusions The number of patients diagnosed as HIV positive has increased in recent years. Offering routine HIV testing in hospitals is feasible and can increase linkage to HIV care and treatment for many individuals. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this manuscript was to evaluate results of the questionnaire given to young people before and after the prevention campaign to determine whether the prevention campaign improved HIV/AIDS-related knowledge of young people. METHODS A total of 533 students completed the pre-test and 496 students completed the post-test. Questionnaire was used as pre/post testing tool. Construct validity and measurement scale were assessed using the factor analysis. Rasch scaling was used to establish common scale for pre/post test and to transform raw score into the interval scale. A non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare knowledge in pre-test and post-test. RESULTS Students increased their knowledge of HIV/AIDS (Pearson's measure of effect size r = 0.74) and the risk of acquiring HIV infection (r = 0.68) statistically significantly (p = 0.001). Girls (risk estimation: r = 0.78, knowledge: r = 0.81) improved much more than boys (risk estimation: r = 0.57, knowledge: r = 0.62). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that, for the selected sample, the prevention campaign was an effective tool to increase young people's knowledge of HIV/AIDS. The authors recommend dividing and tailoring interventions by gender to achieve even more efficient preventive future interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine whether communication strategies and principles have been utilized in the HIV prevention intervention programs conducted in China. METHODS Comprehensive literature searches were conducted using PsycINFO, Medline, and Academic Search Complete with combinations of a number of keywords. Studies were included if they (1) were conducted in China and published prior to October 2011; (2) tested interventions promoting HIV/sexual risk reduction; and (3) reported empirical outcome evaluations on HIV knowledge, condom use and other condom-related variables. Data on 11 dimensions were extracted and analyzed, including formative research, theory, message targeting, messenger and channels, process evaluation, evaluation design, outcome measures. RESULTS The majority of the 45 intervention studies were not theory-based, did not report conducting formative research or process evaluation, used pretest-posttest control group designs, combined nonmedia channels, printed and visual materials, and employed HIV knowledge and condom use as outcome measures. CONCLUSIONS Many HIV prevention interventions in China have been successful in reducing HIV risk-related outcomes. This literature has its weaknesses; however, the current review illuminates gaps in the literature and points to important future directions for research.

Abstract
This study explored the prevalence of peer physical aggression (PPA) and its association with aggressive beliefs, empathy, self-control, and cooperation skills among 1,719 7th-to-9th-grade students in a rural town in the central China province of Henan. The data were collected by the self-administered questionnaire anonymously. Results showed that 17.9% of the students reported that they had one or more times of physical aggressive behaviors toward their peers in the past 12 months. The reported rate of PPA was significantly higher in boys (24.7%) than in girls (10.7%). After adjusting the factors of gender and grade, result of logistic regression analysis showed that having a higher level of aggressive beliefs was PPA risk factor; a higher level of self-control was protective factor, but there were no significant association between PPA and the factors of empathy and cooperation skills. These results indicated that helping students to decrease their aggressive beliefs and to improve their self-control skill would aid in the prevention of youth violence.

Abstract
The current study was a meta-analysis of the efficacy of educational, psychosocial or behavioral interventions that were conducted in China to promote HIV/sexual risk reduction. A total of 26 intervention studies qualified for the meta-analysis. Outcome variables for which effect sizes were calculated included condom use with different types of sexual partners, HIV/AIDS knowledge, condom use knowledge, intentions of condom use, condom use self-efficacy, and others. Mean weighted effect sizes were calculated for each outcome measure across reviewed studies; effect size for each outcome measure was weighted by their inverse variance; fixed effects and random effects meta-analytic procedures were used. The Q statistic was used to examine whether the effect sizes were homogeneous in nature and moderating analysis (i.e., the Q(b) statistic) was used to compare the effect sizes of intervention studies that were different in a number of categorical variables. The reviewed interventions were successful in improving HIV knowledge (d=0.706), condom use knowledge (d=0.620), attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA; d=0.625) and in increasing condom use with regular partners (d=0.477), condom use with casual partners (d=0.444), general condom use (d=0.408), and condom use self-efficacy (d=0.584) among target audiences. In addition, moderating analyses on three most examined variables, including HIV knowledge, condom use, and attitudes toward PLWHA, demonstrated that interventions that reported the conduction of formative research and process evaluation, that were peer-led, and that included only one follow-up were more likely to report a positive impact on condom use behavior among target audiences (p<0.001), HIV knowledge (p<0.001), or attitudes toward PLWHA (p<0.001).

Abstract
Background Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are among the most complex health problems in the world. Young people are at high risk of HIV and AIDS infections and are, therefore, in need of targeted prevention. School-based HIV/AIDS health education may be an effective way to prevent the spread of AIDS among adolescents. Methods The study was a school-based intervention conducted in three middle schools and two high schools in Wuhan, China, which included 702 boys and 766 girls, with ages from 11 to 18 years old. The intervention was a one-class education program about HIV/AIDS for participants. HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitude, and high-risk behaviors were investigated using an anonymous self-administered questionnaire before and after the education intervention. Chi-square test was used to compare differences before and after the intervention. Non-conditional logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors that affect HIV/AIDS knowledge. Results Misconceptions about basic medical knowledge and non-transmission modes of HIV/AIDS among all the students prevail. Approximately 10% to 40% of students had negative attitudes about HIV/AIDS before the intervention. After the intervention, all of the students had significant improvements in knowledge and attitude about HIV/AIDS (P<.05), indicating that educational intervention increased the students’ knowledge significantly and changed their attitudes positively. Logistic regression analyses indicated that before the intervention the students’ level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS was significantly associated with grade, economic status of the family, and attitudes toward participation in HIV/AIDS health information campaigns. Conclusions HIV/AIDS education programs were welcomed by secondary students and positively influenced HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and attitudes. A systematic and long-term intervention among secondary school students must be conducted for the prevention of HIV.
