Abstract
The combination of vitamin A and D derivatives with classical chemotherapeutic treatments results in more satisfactory outcomes. The use of drug combinations, such as 9cUAB130 with carboplatin and cisplatin with TAC-101, shows enhanced cytotoxic effects and reductions in ovarian tumor volume compared to single-drug treatments. Combining cisplatin with calcitriol and progesterone increases VDR expression, potentially enhancing the effectiveness of anticancer therapy in ovarian cancer. The effectiveness of vitamin derivatives in anticancer treatment may vary depending on the characteristics of the tumor and the cell line from which it originated. An increase in thiamine intake of one unit is associated with an 18% decrease in HPV infection. Higher intake of vitamin C by 50 mg/day is linked to a lower risk of cervical neoplasia. Beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E are associated with risk reductions of 12%, 15%, and 9% in endometrial cancer, respectively. A balanced daily intake of vitamins is important, as both deficiency and excess can influence cancer development. It has been observed that there is a U-shaped relationship between group B vitamins and metabolic markers and clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum concentration of folate was inversely associated with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer in some studies. The association between folate and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, a necessary cause of cervical cancer, has not been well elucidated. OBJECTIVES We evaluated whether serum folate concentrations were associated with high-risk HPV (hrHPV) infection. METHODS The study population was 11,801 females, aged 18-59 y, enrolled in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), from 2003 to 2016, in the United States. In this cross-sectional study, prevalence ratios (PRs) of vaginal hrHPV were calculated using logistic regression models, by quintiles of serum folate. RESULTS Females in the lowest quintile had <21.3 nmol/L of folate. Approximately 23% of the females (2733/11,801) were hrHPV positive. In age-adjusted models, folate was significantly associated with hrHPV infection. The PRs and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were (PR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.37, 1.70) for the first, (PR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.15, 1.44) for the second, (PR: 1.19; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.34) for the third, and (PR: 1.09; 95% CI: 0.96, 1.23) for the fourth quintiles, compared with the females in the highest quintile, with a significant P value for trend, <0.0001. The association remained statistically significant after the models were further adjusted for lifestyle and sexual risk factors for hrHPV infection; the females in the lowest quintile were more likely to have hrHPV infection than those in the highest quintile (PR: 1.40; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.53). CONCLUSIONS Results from this sample of females in the United States suggest that serum folate concentration is inversely associated with hrHPV infection.

Abstract
The relationships between cancer caused by HPV and some vitamins, as well as leucocytes and their ratios, have been investigated in the literature. Our aim is to evaluate these relationships at the level of genital wart in terms of the investigated parameters and lesion numbers. Data were obtained from 98 and 94 patients for groups one and two, including warts patients and healthy people respectively. The Neutrophil/Monocyte ratio and lesion numbers in the warts patients were reported and analysed in terms of vitamin B12 and D, ferritin and leucocytes. A correlation was established between lesion numbers, age and midcorpuscular volume (p <0.05). There was no correlation between lesion numbers and recurrence. According to the comparative analysis, there were differences in terms of ferritin, neutrophil, monocyte, haemoglobin, midcorpuscular volume and neutrophil/monocyte ratio between groups. The cut-off values for neutrophil, monocyte and N/M ratios were 56.45, 4.91 and 7.825 respectively. While our study showed that wart development may be affected by blood ferritin levels and in this situation, midcorpuscular volume, neutrophil, monocyte and N/M ratios may change, a relation was found between lesion numbers and age and mean midcorpsucular volume values only. However, further studies are needed to clarify this issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Diet and lifestyle play an important role in etiology of various tumors. Serum concentration of folate and vitamin B12may be associated with carcinogenesis since they are involved in DNA methylation and nucleotide synthesis. However, the role of these micronutrients on development of cervical cancer is still controversial. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the association of lower status of folate and vitamin B12 with the risk of pre-neoplastic cervical lesions. METHODS Our sample group was divided in Control group (n = 120) - women with normal cytology, and Case groups (n = 57) - women presenting Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASC-US, n = 21), Low Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LSIL; n = 16), and High-Grade lesions (n = 20). We obtained cervical samples for cytology analysis and HPV detection, and blood samples for evaluation of serum concentration of folate and vitamin B12. RESULTS No difference of serum folate was observed among Cases and Control groups. On the other hand, women with High-Grade lesions presented significant lower median concentration of vitamin B12 if compared to another groups. Then, we observed increased risk of High-Grade lesions among participants with low vitamin B12 levels was observed in relation to women that presented high levels of the micronutrient and from Control group [OR (95% CI): 2.09 (0.65-6.76), p = 0.216], ASC-US [OR (95% CI): 3.15 (0.82-12.08), p = 0.095], and LSIL [OR (95% CI): 3.10 (0.76-12.70), p = 0.116]. CONCLUSIONS Low concentration of vitamin B12 was associated with an increased risk of High-Grade cervical lesions. Besides, we did not observe any difference of serum folate among women with normal cytology and women with pre-neoplastic cervical lesions.

Abstract
Background Although folate deficiency has long been implicated in cancer development, uncertainties remain concerning its role in cervical cancer prevention. In particular, the interaction between human papillomavirus (HPV) and folate in the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) has been little studied. Objective The goal of this study was to evaluate the dose-response association of serum folate with the risk of CIN, and the potential for HPV to modify the risk of CIN. Design We performed a cross-sectional analysis of screening data in 2304 women aged 19-65 y who participated in an ongoing cohort of 40,000 women in China. Both categoric and spline analyses were used to evaluate the dose-response relation between serum folate and CIN risk. Results After adjusting for potential confounders, a statistically significant inverse association between serum folate concentration and at least grade 2 CIN (CIN2+) risk was observed (1st quartile compared with 4th quartile: OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.79; P-trend < 0.01); however, serum folate concentration was not associated with CIN1 risk. The risk patterns are similar when limited to only CIN2 and CIN3. An inverse linear relation between increased serum folate concentration and the risk of higher-grade CIN (CIN2, CIN3, and CIN2+) was also observed (for CIN2+: P-overall < 0.01, P-nonlinearity = 0.96). The highest risk of CIN2+ was observed in women with high-risk HPV types, who also had the lowest serum folate concentrations (P-interaction < 0.01). Conclusions Our study indicates that serum folate is inversely associated with the risk of higher-grade CIN in Chinese women either with or without high-risk HPV infection. Thus, maintenance of normal serum folate levels may prove important for reducing the risk of CIN in women.

Abstract
High folate intake has been suggested as an important factor in cancer prevention; however, previous studies on the relation among folate intake, serum folate, and plasma homocysteine (hcy) are controversial. We conducted a hospital-based, case-control study in Brazil investigating associations between dietary and circulating vitamins B-6 and B-12 and folate, hcy, genotypes of folate-metabolizing enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T, A1298C), 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase (MTR A2756G), methionine synthase reductase (MTRR A66G), and reduced folate carrier (RFC1 G80A) and risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades 1 (CIN1), 2 (CIN2), and 3 (CIN3). The study was composed by 453 controls, 140 CIN1, 126 CIN2, and 231 CIN3. We investigated the joint effects of genetic variants of folate-related genes using genetic risk scores (GRSs) by summing the number of risk alleles for CIN1 and CIN2+ (CIN2 and CIN3 cases). The OR (95% CI) for CIN1 and CIN2+ per each risk allele were 1.29 (1.01, 1.65) and 1.22 (1.01, 1.46), respectively. An association between folate intake and CIN2+ was observed only after stratification according to GRS: crude OR (95% CI) for lower folate intake and GRS ≥ 4 was 1.67 (0.92, 3.04) (P-trend < 0.001) compared with higher folate intake (above the median) and GRS ≤ 3. The CIN2+ risk of lower serum vitamin B-6 and GRS ≥ 4 was 2.14 (0.92, 5.02) (P-trend = 0.05) and lower serum folate (below the median) and GRS ≥ 4 was 0.49 (0.20, 1.17) (P-trend = 0.05) after adjustment for confounding variables and human papillomavirus infection. Our data suggest that polymorphisms in genes related to folate metabolism modify the association of dietary and circulating folate and vitamin B-6 with cervical neoplasia.

Abstract
The natural history of cervical cancer suggests that prevention can be achieved by modification of the host's immune system through a nutrient-mediated program. This study reviews the preventive role of dietary intake on cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) induced by human papillomavirus (HPV). Electronic databases were searched using relevant keywords such as, but not limited to, human papillomavirus infection, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, lifestyle factors, nutrients intake, and diet. High consumption of fruit and vegetables appears to be protective against CIN. The findings also highlight the possibility of consuming high levels of specific nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and retaining sufficient level of these elements in the body, especially those with high antioxidants and antiviral properties, to prevent progression of transient and persistent HPV infections to high-grade CIN 2 and 3 (including in situ cervical cancer). The protective effect is not significant for high-risk HPV persistent infections and invasive cervical cancer. Although it appears that intake of specific nutrients, vitamins, and minerals may be good in CIN prevention, there is lack of evidence from controlled trial to confirm this. Health professionals shall focus on implementation of a balanced-diet prevention strategy at an early stage for cervical cancer prevention.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the cause of cervical cancer. Increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) maybe the common mechanism through which HPV-cofactors (i.e., smoking and inflammation) influence duration of infections. Biomarkers of total oxidant load may serve as cumulative measures of ROS exposure due to these cofactors. Therefore, we conducted a study evaluating the association between biomarkers of oxidant load and duration of HPV infections, early HPV natural history events. Serum samples were obtained from 444 HPV-positive women in the Ludwig-McGill Cohort Study. Anti-5-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxyuridine autoantibody (anti-HMdU aAb) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured at baseline. Cox-proportional hazard models were used to estimate the probability of clearing any HPV, oncogenic HPV, non-oncogenic HPV and HPV-16 infections. Women with elevated MDA were significantly more likely to clear prevalent oncogenic HPV infections compared to those with lower MDA levels (Adjusted Hazard Ratio (AHR) = 2.7; 95%CI = 1.4-5.1). There did not appear to be an association between elevated MDA and clearance of incident oncogenic HPV infections. Similarly, women with elevated anti-HMdU aAb levels had higher rates of prevalent oncogenic HPV infection clearance (Quartile 3:AHR = 2.2; 95%CI = 1.2-4.4; Quartile 4:AHR = 2.4; 95%CI = 1.2-4.9). Higher levels of oxidant load biomarkers were associated with increased clearance of prevalent HPV infections. However, oxidant load biomarkers measured before incident infections were not associated, suggesting that the elevation of MDA and anti-HMdU aAb may reflect an ongoing effective immune response, such as increased innate immunity. More research focused on the immune responses to HPV and elevated markers of oxidant load is needed.

Abstract
Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) is involved in cervical cancer (CC), a major cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Infection occurs primarily at the transformation zone (TZ), the most estrogen- and retinoid-sensitive region of the cervix. Development of CC affects a small percentage of HR-HPV-infected women and often takes decades after infection, suggesting that HR-HPV is a necessary but not sufficient cause of CC. Thus, other cofactors are necessary for progression from cervical HR-HPV infection to cancer such as long-term use of hormonal contraceptives, multiparity, smoking, as well as micronutrient depletion and in particular retinoid deficiency, which alters epithelial differentiation, cellular growth and apoptosis of malignant cells. Therefore, early detection of HR-HPV and management of precancerous lesions together with a profound understanding of additional risk factors could be a strategy to avoid this disease. In this review we focus on the synergic effect of estrogens, retinoid deficiency and HR-HPVs in the development of CC. These risk factors may act in concert to induce neoplastic transformation in squamous epithelium of the cervix, setting the stage for secondary genetic or epigenetic events leading to cervical cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We previously reported that higher circulating concentrations of folate are independently associated with a lower likelihood of becoming positive for high-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) and of having a persistent HR-HPV infection and a greater likelihood of becoming HR-HPV negative (Cancer Res 2004;64:8788-93). In the present study conducted in the same study population, we tested whether circulating folate concentrations modify the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) > or =2 associated with specific types of HR-HPV. METHODS Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess associations (odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals) across HR-HPV, folate, and rigorously reviewed cervical histology of each subject. RESULTS HPV-16-positive women with low red blood cell folate were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with CIN > or =2 than were HPV-16-negative women with higher red blood cell folate (odds ratio 9, 95% confidence interval 3.3-24.8). CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the first study reporting an independent association of folate with risk of having CIN > or =2 in a population tested extensively for HR-HPV and CIN that also adequately controlled for several other micronutrients and known risk factors for CIN. Our findings suggest that improving the folate status in HR-HPV-infected women may reduce the risk of CIN and thus the risk of cervical cancer. Folate supplementation should be tested as a means of reducing the risk of developing CIN > or =2 in women exposed to HR-HPV, especially HPV-16.

Abstract
Our objective was to provide an update on recent epidemiologic evidence about the role of diet and nutrition on the risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence and cervical neoplasia, taking HPV into account. We conducted a systematic review and qualitative classification of all observational studies controlling for HPV infection published between March 1995 and November 2003 and of all randomized clinical trials published between January 1991 and November 2003. Scientific evidence was classified as convincing, probable, possible or insufficient, as used in a previous study on diet and cancer. Thirty-three studies were eligible for this review (10 clinical trials, 8 observational prospective studies and 15 case-control studies). The few studies on HPV persistence showed a possible protective effect of fruits, vegetables, vitamins C and E, beta- and alpha-carotene, lycopene, luterin/zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Evidence for a protective effect of cervical neoplasia was probable for folate, retinol and vitamin E and possible for vegetables, vitamins C and B12, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. Evidence for an increased risk of cervical neoplasia associated with high blood homocysteine was probable. Results did not differ between studies looking at preneoplastic and invasive lesions or between retrospective and prospective studies. The available evidence for an association between diet and nutritional status and cervical carcinogenesis taking HPV infection into account is not yet convincing. Large cohort studies are needed to adequately assess the role of foods and nutrients in cervical HPV carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Several micronutrients have been implicated in cervical carcinogenesis. However, their mode of action is still a matter of speculation. In particular, it is unclear whether certain nutrients reduce the probability of acquiring high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) or whether they facilitate the clearance of high-risk HPV. We conducted a 24-month prospective follow-up study to test the hypothesis that systemic concentrations of folate are associated with the occurrence and duration of high-risk HPV infections after controlling for other micronutrients (vitamins B(12), A, E, and C, total carotene) and known risk factors for high-risk HPV infections and cervical cancer. Circulating concentrations of these micronutrients and risk factors for cervical cancer were determined in a cohort of 345 women who were at risk of developing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Using the hybrid capture 2 (HC-2) assay, high-risk HPV status was evaluated at 6-month intervals up to 24 months. All women had at least three consecutive visit high-risk HPV test results. Higher folate status was inversely associated with becoming HC-2 test-positive [odds ratio (OR): 0.27; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.08-0.91; P = 0.04]. Women with higher folate status were significantly less likely to be repeatedly HC-2 test-positive (OR: 0.33; 95% CI, 0.13-0.86; P = 0.02) and more likely to become test-negative during the study (OR: 2.50; 95% CI, 1.18-5.30; P = 0.02). To our knowledge, this is the first long-term prospective follow-up study reporting an independent protective role of higher folate status on several aspects of the natural history of high-risk HPV after controlling for known risk factors and other micronutrients. Improving folate status in subjects at risk of getting infected or already infected with high-risk HPV may have a beneficial impact in the prevention of cervical cancer.
