Abstract
This work presented the influence of metal oxides as the support for silver-supported catalysts on the catalytic oxidation of diesel particulate matter (DPM). The supports selected to be used in this work were CeO2 (reducible), ZnO (semiconductor), TiO2 (reducible and semiconductor), and Al2O3 (acidic). The properties of the synthesized catalysts were investigated using XRD, TEM, H2-TPR, and XPS techniques. The DPM oxidation activity was performed using the TGA method. Different states of silver (e.g., Ag° and Ag+) were formed with different concentrations and affected the performance of the DPM oxidation. Ag2O and lattice oxygen, which were mainly generated by Ag/ZnO and Ag/CeO2, were responsible for combusting the VOCs. The metallic silver (Ag°) formed primarily on Ag/Al2O3 and Ag/TiO2 was the main component promoting soot combustion. Contact between the catalyst and DPM had a minor effect on VOC oxidation but significantly affected the soot oxidation activity.

Highly Photoactive Titanium Dioxide Supported Platinum Catalyst: Synthesis Using Cleaner Ultrasound Approach. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
Catalysts increase reaction rates; however, the surface area to volume ratio of catalysts has a vital role in catalytic activity. The noble metals such as platinum (Pt) and gold (Au) are expensive; despite this, they have proven their existence in catalysis, motivating the synthesis of supported metal catalysts. Metal catalysts need to be highly dispersed onto the support. In this investigation, an ultrasound approach has been attempted to synthesise highly photoactive titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles by the hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide in an acetone/methanol mixture. To enhance its photocatalytic activity, TiO2 was doped with Pt. The synthesised photocatalyst was characterised by techniques such as particle size analysis (PSA), XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, and EDX. The enhancement in the surface characteristics of Pt-doped TiO2 compared with bare TiO2 support was confirmed with Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis. The enhanced surface area and uniformity in particle size distribution at the nanoscale level were due to the effects of ultrasonic irradiation. The obtained results corroborated the size and composition of the synthesised catalysts. The size of the catalysts is in the nanometre range, and good dispersion of Pt catalysts over the TiO2 support was observed. The UV-Visible spectroscopy analysis was performed to study the optical properties of the synthesised TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 photocatalysts. An increase in the absorbance was noted when Pt was added to TiO2, which is due to the decrease in the band gap energy.

Immobilization of TiO2 Nanoparticles in Hydrogels Based on Poly(Methyl Acrylate) and Succinamide Acid for the Photodegradation of Organic Dyes. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
Hydrogels have excellent properties that make them ideally suited as host matrices for the immobilization of photoreactive materials such as TiO2 nanoparticles that serve as catalysts in the photodegradation of organic dyes, which is of great importance in practical water pollution treatment applications. However, the application of hydrogels for this purpose remains poorly studied. The present study addresses this issue by developing two types of hydrogels based on poly(methyl acrylate) and succinamide acid with embedded TiO2 nanoparticles for use as photocatalysts in the photodegradation of organic dyes. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the TiO2 nanoparticles are distributed uniformly in the hydrogel matrices, and the hydrogels maintain their original structures after use. The photodegradation efficiencies of the developed TiO2-hydrogels are demonstrated to be reasonably close to that of freely distributed TiO2 nanoparticles in solution for four different organic dyes. In addition, the results of degradation-regeneration cycling tests demonstrate that immobilizing the TiO2 nanoparticles into the hydrogels greatly reduces their loss during utilization, and the photocatalysts can be easily reused. In fact, the two TiO2-hydrogels retain reasonably high photocatalytic degradation performance after four degradation-regeneration cycles.

Abstract
Alloying processes in nanometre-sized Ag@Au and Au@Ag core@shell particles with average radii of 2 nm are studied via high resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging on in situ heatable carbon substrates. The bimetallic clusters are synthesized in small droplets of superfluid helium under fully inert conditions. After deposition, they are monitored during a heating cycle to 600 K and subsequent cooling. The core-shell structure, a sharply defined feature of the TEM High-Angle Annular Dark-Field images taken at room temperature, begins to blur with increasing temperature and transforms into a fully mixed alloy around 573 K. This transition is studied at atomic resolution, giving insights into the alloying process with unprecedented precision. A new image-processing method is presented, which allows a measurement of the temperature-dependent diffusion constant at the nanoscale. The first quantification of this property for a bimetallic structure <5 nm sheds light on the thermodynamics of finite systems and provides new input for current theoretical models derived from bulk data.

Abstract
It has been shown that photoexcitation of plasmonic metal nanoparticles (Ag, Au and Cu) can induce direct photochemical reactions. However, the widespread application of this technology in catalysis has been limited by the relatively poor chemical reactivity of noble metal surfaces. Despite efforts to combine plasmonic and catalytic metals, the physical mechanisms that govern energy transfer from plasmonic metals to catalytic metals remain unclear. Here we show that hybrid core-shell nanostructures in which a core plasmonic metal harvests visible-light photons can selectively channel that energy into catalytically active centres on the nanostructure shell. To accomplish this, we developed a synthetic protocol to deposit a few monolayers of Pt onto Ag nanocubes. This model system allows us to conclusively separate the optical and catalytic functions of the hybrid nanomaterial and determine that the flow of energy is strongly biased towards the excitation of energetic charge carriers in the Pt shell. We demonstrate the utility of these nanostructures for photocatalytic chemical reactions in the preferential oxidation of CO in excess H2. Our data demonstrate that the reaction occurs exclusively on the Pt surface.

Abstract
The nature and size of the real active species of nanoparticulated metal supported catalysts is still an unresolved question. The technique of choice to measure particle sizes at the nanoscale, HRTEM, has a practical limit of 1 nm. This work is aimed to identify the catalytic role of subnanometer species and methods to detect and characterize them. In this frame, we investigated the sensitivity to redox pretreatments of Ag/Fe/TiO₂, Ag/Mg/TiO₂ and Ag/Ce/TiO₂ catalysts in CO oxidation. The joint application of HRTEM, SR-XRD, DRS, XPS, EXAFS and XANES methods indicated that most of the silver in all samples is in the form of Ag species with size <1 nm. The differences in catalytic properties and sensitivity to pretreatments, observed for the studied Ag catalysts, could not be explained taking into account only the Ag particles whose size distribution is measured by HRTEM, but may be explained by the presence of the subnanometer Ag species, undetectable by HRTEM, and their interaction with supports. This result highlights their role as active species and the need to take them into account to understand integrally the catalysis by supported nanometals.

On the High Sensitivity of the Electronic States of 1 nm Gold Particles to Pretreatments and Modifiers. Molecules 2016; 21:432. Abstract
In this paper, the effect of modifiers and pretreatments on the electronic states of 1 nm gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) supported on silica was systematically studied. AuNPs deposited on silica (particle size of 2–4 nm) modified with Ce, La and Fe oxides, were studied by FTIR of adsorbed CO after different redox treatments at 100, 300 and 500 °C. This study was conducted at room temperature to allow detecting the electronic states of gold, which is more likely involved in CO oxidation at the same temperature. AuNP size distribution was measured by HRTEM. It is shown that the electronic state of gold species (Aunδ−, Au0, Aunδ+, Au+) in 1 nm AuNPs is sensitive to the modifier as well as to the temperatures of redox pretreatments. Supports modified with the same additives but containing larger AuNPs (~3, 4, 5, and 7 nm) were also studied. They showed that Au0 remains stable irrespective of additives and redox pretreatments, indicating no significant effect of such treatments on the electronic properties of larger AuNPs. Samples with a predominant AuNP size of 2 nm are an intermediate case between these two groups of materials.

Abstract
Copper nanomaterials are being used in a large number of commercial products because these materials exhibit unique optical, magnetic, and electronic properties. Metallic copper nanoparticles, which often have a thin surface oxide layer, can age in the ambient environment and become even more oxidized over time. These aged nanoparticles will then have different properties compared to the original nanoparticles. In this study, we have characterized three different types of copper-based nanoparticle (NP) samples designated as Cu(new) NPs, Cu(aged) NPs, and CuO NPs that differ in the level of oxidation. The solution phase behavior of these three copper-based nanoparticle samples is investigated as a function of pH and in the presence and absence of two common, complexing organic acids, citric and oxalic acid. The behavior of these three copper-based NP types shows interesting differences. In particular, Cu(aged) NPs exhibit unique chemistry including oxide phases that form and surface adsorption properties. Overall, the current study provides some insights into the impacts of nanoparticle aging and how the physicochemical characteristics and reactivity of nanomaterials can change upon aging.

Abstract
Since the growing interest in the manufacture and environmental applications of nanocomposites consisting of CuO and TiO2nanoparticles (NPs), related toxicological effect and interaction with cellular structures for these newly developed materials are still unknown. Recent literature reveals that nanosized CuO and TiO2particles have cytotoxicity risks and ability to cause oxidative stress on health. This work considers the CuO doped TiO2nanocomposite particles were synthesized via a coprecipitation method with aqueous solutions as precursors of copper nitrateand titanium dioxide. Moreover, the nanocomposite particles were characterized using TGA-DTA, UV-Vis and TEM measurements. The calcination temperature was selected at 873 K. The nanocomposite particles were characterized by TEM, as the primary particles, aggregates ranged from 30 to 100 nm and have a good dispersion character. Cell cytotoxicity assessment and the percentage cell survival was determined by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5(3-carboxymethoxyphenol)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazoli um (MTS) assay on human fetal lung tissue cell (MRC-5). The experimental results show that the CuO doped TiO2nanocomposite particles cause potential cytotoxicity effect in cultured human cells.
