Characterisation of heterogeneous catalysts by EXAFS

Sparse ab initio x-ray transmission spectrotomography for nanoscopic compositional analysis of functional materials

The performance of functional materials is either driven or limited by nanoscopic heterogeneities distributed throughout the material's volume. To better our understanding of these materials, we need characterization tools that allow us to determine the nature and distribution of these heterogeneities in their native geometry in 3D. Here, we introduce a method based on x-ray near-edge spectroscopy, ptychographic x-ray computed nanotomography, and sparsity techniques. The method allows the acquisition of quantitative multimodal tomograms of representative sample volumes at sub-30 nm half-period spatial resolution within practical acquisition times, which enables local structure refinements in complex geometries. To demonstrate the method's capabilities, we investigated the transformation of vanadium phosphorus oxide catalysts with industrial use. We observe changes from the micrometer to the atomic level and the formation of a location-specific defect so far only theorized. These results led to a reevaluation of these catalysts used in the production of plastics.

Speciation of chromium compounds from humic acid-zeolite Y to an ionic liquid during extraction

By synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, chemical structures of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))/trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) adsorbed on humic acid (HA)-zeolite Y and extracted in an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C₄mim][BF₄])) have been studied. By combining the competitive adsorption results and reduction of Cr(VI)-HA with the carboxyl groups of HA, Cr(III)-HA (58%) was shown to be the major compound in HA-zeolite Y using synchrotron X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. In an ionic liquid phase, the reduction of Cr(VI)-HA to Cr(III)-HA and the desorption of Cr(III) from HA were caused by [C₄mim][BF₄]. The ⁹F nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra show that the perturbation of the [C₄mim][BF₄] anion was affected by the extractable chromium species. The formation of a Cr(III) ion affected the increase in the bond distance for the 1st shell CrO of the chromium species in [C₄mim][BF₄] using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The changes in the non-extractable chromium species remaining in HA-zeolite Y were also caused by [C₄mim][BF₄] during extraction. The desorption of the absorbed Cr(III) on HA and zeolite Y was observed to form Cr(III) ions. As the percentage of Cr(III) ions remaining in HA-zeolite Y increased, a slightly greater bond distance for CrO was found at 2.01 Å. The enhanced reduction of Cr(VI)-HA and desorption of Cr(III) adsorbed on the HA and zeolite Y to form Cr(III) ions were affected by [C₄mim][BF₄]. Increased mobility of Cr(III) in the simulated soil can promote the migration of Cr(III) ions into the H₂O during soil washing for remediation.

Fine structure characterization of zero-valent iron nanoparticles for decontamination of nitrites and nitrates in wastewater and groundwater

The main objectives of the present study were to investigate the chemical reduction of nitrate or nitrite species by zero-valent iron nanoparticle (ZVIN) in aqueous solution and related reaction kinetics or mechanisms using fine structure characterization. This work also exemplifies the utilization of field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) to reveal the speciation and possible reaction pathway in a very complex adsorption and redox reaction process. Experimentally, ZVIN of this study was prepared by sodium borohydride reduction method at room temperature and ambient pressure. The morphology of as-synthesized ZVIN shows that the nearly ball and ultrafine particles ranged of 20-50 nm were observed with FE-SEM or TEM analysis. The kinetic model of nitrites or nitrates reductive reaction by ZVIN is proposed as a pseudo first-order kinetic equation. The nitrite and nitrate removal efficiencies using ZVIN were found 65-83% and 51-68%, respectively, based on three different initial concentrations. Based on the XRD pattern analyses, it is found that the quantitative relationship between nitrite and Fe(III) or Fe(II) is similar to the one between nitrate and Fe(III) in the ZVIN study. The possible reason is due to the faster nitrite reduction by ZVIN. In fact, the occurrence of the relative faster nitrite reductive reaction suggested that the passivation of the ZVIN have a significant contribution to iron corrosion. The extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) or x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra show that the nitrites or nitrates reduce to N2 or NH3 while oxidizing the ZVIN to Fe2O3 or Fe3O4 electrochemically. It is also very clear that decontamination of nitrate or nitrite species in groundwater via the in-situ remediation with a ZVIN permeable reactive barrier would be environmentally attractive.

Synthesis, functionalisation and characterisation of mesoporous materials and sol-gel glasses for applications in catalysis, adsorption and photonics

In this review, synthesis and functionalisation approaches for ordered mesoporous materials and sol-gel glasses are described. Catalytic and adsorption applications are emphasised for the ordered mesoporous materials, while optical applications are the focus for sol-gel glasses.
