Abstract
A chromogenic solvent extraction system for Fe(III) based on 4-nitrocatechol (4NC) and xylometazoline hydrochloride (XMH) was investigated. The optimum conditions for extraction spectrophotometric determination of iron were found. Under these conditions, the formula of the extracted complex was (XMH+)3[Fe(4NC)3] and the apparent molar absorption coefficient at λmax = 464 nm was 1.9 × 105 dm3 mol-1 cm-1 (4-fold enrichment). To validate the aforementioned formula and gather information about the spin state of the central Fe(III) ion, a combined experimental-theoretical approach was employed. This approach entailed the experimental determination of the 4NC:Fe and XMH:Fe molar ratios and the optimization of potential color-bearing structures utilizing the B3LYP/6-311G computational chemistry method. The effect of foreign ions was thoroughly examined, and a sensitive, simple, and inexpensive analytical procedure was proposed, which was successfully applied for determining iron in pharmaceutical and industrial samples.

Abstract
The hydrophobic reagent 6-hexyl-4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol (HTAR) was investigated as part of a cloud-point extraction (CPE) system for the spectrophotometric determination of Zn(II). In the system, complexes with different stoichiometries, including 1:1 and 2:2 (Zn:HTAR), are formed. Their ground-state equilibrium geometries were optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G level of theory. The obtained structures were then used to calculate vertical excitation energies in order to generate theoretical UV/Vis absorption spectra. The comparison between theoretical and experimental spectra demonstrated that, under optimal conditions, a binuclear complex containing oxygen-bridging atoms is the dominant species. The absorbance was found to be linearly dependent on the concentration of Zn(II) within the range of 15.7 to 209 ng mL-1 (R2 = 0.9996). The fraction extracted (%E), logarithm of the conditional extraction constant (log Kex), and molar absorption coefficient (ε) at λmax = 553 nm were calculated to be 98.3%, 15.9, and 4.47 × 105 L mol-1 cm-1, respectively. The method developed is characterized by simplicity, convenience, profitability, sensitivity, and ecological friendliness. It has been successfully applied to the analysis of pharmaceutical and industrial samples.

Abstract
A reliable, rapid, and low-cost procedure for determining very low concentrations of hexavalent chromium (Cr) in water is discussed. The procedure is based in the classical reaction of Cr6+ with diphenylcarbazide. Once this reaction has taken place, sodium dodecylsulfate is added to obtain an ion-pair, and Triton X-114 is incorporated. Next, the heating of the mixture allows two phases that can be separated by centrifugation to be obtained in a cloud point microextraction (CPE) process. The coacervate contains all the Cr6+ originally present in the water sample, so that the measurement by molecular absorption spectrophotometry allows the concentration of the metal to be calculated. No harmful organic solvents are required. The discrimination of hexavalent and trivalent forms is achieved by including an oxidation stage with Ce4+. To take full advantage of the pre-concentration effect inherent to the coacervation process, as well as to minimize reagent consumption and waste generation, a portable mini-spectrophotometer which is compatible with microvolumes of liquid samples is used. The preconcentration factor is 415 and a chromium concentration as low as 0.02 µg L-1 can be detected. The procedure shows a good reproducibility (relative standard deviation close to 3%).

Abstract
The samples of precipitated tin (IV) phosphate, modified using hydrothermal, microwave, and mechanochemical procedures, were studied in the process of Cs(I), Sr(II), and U(VI) ion sorption. The initial and modified samples were investigated before and after sorption using XRD, XRF, FTIR, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. It was found that the modification procedures transformed the micro-mesoporous structure of the initial sample into a meso-macroporous structure. As a result, the sorption capacity in relation to all ions increases several times. This indicates the determining role of the porous structure, primary content, and mesopore size on the sorption activity of tin phosphate. The samples, treated in the form of a wet gel, which is a novel procedure, showed the maximum sorption indicators. The sorption of all the tested ions is described by the Langmuir isotherm.

Abstract
In light of the known neuroprotective properties of indole compounds and the promising potential of hydrazone derivatives, two series of aldehyde-heterocyclic hybrids combining those pharmacophores were synthesized as new multifunctional neuroprotectors. The obtained derivatives of indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) and 5-methoxy-indole carboxylic acid (5MICA) had good safety profiles: Hemolytic effects < 5% (200 μM) and IC50 > 150 µM were found in the majority of the SH-SY5Y and bEnd3 cell lines. The 2,3-dihydroxy, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy, and syringaldehyde derivatives of 5MICA exhibited the strongest neuroprotection against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in SH-SY5Y cells and 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity in rat-brain synaptosomes. All the compounds suppressed the iron-induced lipid peroxidation. The hydroxyl derivatives were also the most active in terms of deoxyribose-degradation inhibition, whereas the 3,4-dihydroxy derivatives were able to decrease the superoxide-anion generation. Both series of compounds showed an increased inhibition of hMAO-B, with greater expression detected in the 5MICA hybrids. The in vitro BBB model with the bEnd3 cell line showed that some compounds increased the permeability of the endothelial monolayer while maintaining the tight junctions. The combined results demonstrated that the derivatives of IPA and 5MICA showed strong neuroprotective, antioxidant, MAO-B inhibitory activity and could be considered as prospective multifunctional compounds for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

Synthesis and Characterization of Pt(II) and Pd(II) Complexes with Planar Aromatic Oximes. INORGANICS 2023. Abstract
A series of four Werner-type complexes of Pd(II) and Pt(II) with planar, isomeric conjugated aromatic naphtoquinone oximes were synthesized for the first time. These ligands were 1-oxime-2-naphtoquinone (HL1) and 2-oxime-1-napthoquinone (HL2). Compounds were characterized using thermal analysis, spectroscopic methods, and X-ray analysis. TG/DSC data were collected for pure starting organic ligands, their complexes, and indicated vigorous exothermic decomposition with at ~155 °C for starting HL and ~350 °C for transition metal complexes. Crystal structures for two Pt compounds with 2-oxime-1-quinone were determined and revealed the formation of the cis-geometry complexes and incorporation of molecules of stoichiometric solvents in the lattice: acetonitrile and nitrobenzene. Both solvents of crystallization displayed attractive interactions between their C-H groups and the oxygen atoms of the nitroso groups in complexes, leading to short distances in those fragments. Despite the presence of solvents of inclusion, the overall structure motifs in both compounds represent 1D columnar coordination polymer, in which the PtL2 units are held together via metallophilic interactions, thereby forming ‘Pt-wires’. The Hirshfield surface analysis was performed for both crystallographically characterized complexes. The results showed intermolecular π–π stacking and Pt–Pt interactions among the planar units of both complexes. In addition, the analysis also verified the presence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the platinum unit and solvent molecules. Solid bulk powdery samples of both PtL12 and PtL22 demonstrated pronounced photoluminescence in the near infrared region of spectrum at ~980 nm, being excited in the range of 750–800 nm. The NIR emission was observed only for Pt-complexes and not for pure starting organic ligands or Pd-complexes. Additionally, synthesized Pt-naphtoquinone oximes do not show luminescence in solutions, which suggests the importance of a 1D ‘metal wire’ structure for this process.

Abstract
The potential use of magnetic nanopowder for phenol adsorption mobilised on natural grain carbon foam from an aqueous solution was studied. Phenolic compounds are priority pollutants with high toxicity even at low concentrations. A magnetic nanopowder was synthesised by dissolving an iron sponge in nitric acid to produce iron nitrate, which was added to a natural grain mixture with flour as the main ingredient. The synthesised carbon foam was investigated for the effects of initial concentration, time, and TEM (transmission electron microscopy) characterisation. The phenol adsorption increased as the iron content of the carbon foam and the initial concentration increased. A kinetic study showed that the phenol adsorption data adequately covered all the carbon foam samples tested using an equation corresponding to a pseudo-first order chemical reaction. The Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin equations were tested for modelling the adsorption isotherms at equilibrium, and it was concluded that the Temkin model fit the experimental data adequately. Due to its exceptional physical and chemical properties, carbon magnetic nanopowder is regarded as an outstanding pollutant absorber in environmental investigations. R2 values derived from the pseudo-first-order model exceed 0.99. R2 > 0.94 indicates that the Freundlich isotherm provides the best fit to the equilibrium data.

Abstract
In this investigation, a synthetic Talc Phosphogypsum ferri-silicate TPFS sorbent was prepared by thermal activation then evaluated the uranium ions removal from sulfate waste solution containing uranium. Generally, the synthetic adsorbents from raw and waste materials have a significant attention from scientists because the environmental concern and economic development, particularly, the uranium elimination from radioactive waste solutions. The uranium removal percentage and loading capacity were determined by optimization the conditions of adsorption such as the pH range, adsorbent/adsorbate ratio, uranium concentration of radioactive waste solutions, equilibrium time and temperature. The resultant adsorption efficiency and loading capacity were 87.2% and 375 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption isothermally was in accordance with Langmuir isotherm model, in addition pseudo-second-order kinetic model, with theoretical capacity of 384.6 and 333 mg g−1, respectively. Uranium (VI) adsorption on TPFS was inhibited at elevated temperatures. The removal of uranium from sulfate waste solution by TPES sorbent according to the thermodynamic functions values was exothermic (∆H of −16.095) and non-spontaneous in nature (∆G of −17.27 at 303 K). In addition, there was a decrease in the randomness at the TPFS/uranium waste solution interface with ∆S value of 3.88.

Abstract
The separation and recovery of thorium from monazite is critical to the sustainable development of the nuclear industry as well as to environmental safety. Also, the removal of radionuclides from polluted sources is a critical issue in environmental control. Magnetic ferrite nanoparticles (MCMF-NP, Co0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4) were synthesized (4–22 nm in size) and characterized. MCMF-NP was investigated for Th(IV) separation from their aqueous medium under various test conditions of acidity, time, and Th(IV) concentration, in line with the uptake capacity. The amount of thorium adsorbed is improved when pH, time, and initial concentration are increased. The maximum uptake of Th(IV) by MCMF-NP was observed at pH 3.5–4 and a contact time of 180 min. A favorable adsorption mechanism was shown in the pseudo-second-order rate. Isotherm analysis shows an adequate process described by the Langmuir isotherm. MCMF-NP is an adsorbent capable of successful disposal of Th(IV) from waste solutions with a high uptake of 81.3 mg of Th(IV)/g of MCMF-NP. The possibility of re-using the MCMF-NP, adding value to this content as a way of compensating for the disposal costs, was studied and disused. Abstract
BACKGROUND Liver fibrosis is a serious health problem which may lead to advanced liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to investigate the role of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and glutamine aminohydrolase enzyme (l-glutaminase) in the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis and the potential benefits of niclosamide in treating liver fibrosis. METHODS Ninety male Albino rats were divided into 6 equal groups (n = 15) as follows: a normal control group (NC), CCl4-only treated group (Fib.) which received 1 mg/kg CCl4 two times weekly, niclosamide-treated group (Niclo.) which received 5 mg/kg of niclosamide one time daily, lithium chloride-treated group (LiCl) which received 100 mg/kg of LiCl one time daily, niclosamide-and-CCl4-treated group (Niclo. + Fib.) which received same doses of niclosamide and CCl4 given to other groups, and finally lithium chloride-and-CCl4-treated rat group (LiCl + Fib.) which received same doses of LiCl and CCl4 given to other groups. All treatments were administered orally for 8 weeks. Liver tissue was assessed for l-hydroxyproline, beta-catenin (β-catenin), l-glutaminase activity, as well as the gene expression of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) and Dishevelled-2 (Dvl2). Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses of alpha smooth muscle actin α-SMA were performed. Serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and total bilirubin were measured. RESULTS The group of niclosamide-and-CCl4-treated rats showed a significant decrease in total bilirubin, ALT and AST, β-catenin, l-hydroxyproline, l-glutaminase activity, and gene expression of TGF-β1 and Dvl2. Moreover, the liver tissue in this group of rats showed mild α-SMA reactivity compared with the rats treated with CCl4 only (fibrosis group). On the other hand, lithium chloride-and-CCl4-treated rats showed a significant increase in liver indices, TGF-β1 expression, β-catenin, l-hydroxyproline, and l-glutaminase activity with severe α-SMA reactivity and apoptosis in the liver tissue. CONCLUSIONS Niclosamide protected rats against liver fibrosis by inhibiting the Wnt/β-catenin pathway and glutaminolysis.

Abstract
Determination of chromophores of various classes-rosaniline (fuchsine), cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, tris(1,10-phenanthroline) iron(II), and phenol red - in their concentrated solutions near their solubility limits is performed with the optoacoustic technique for optically dense solutions; light-absorption coefficients of samples range from 0.5 to 500cm-1. The assessment of these substances in organo-aqueous and organic solvents is possible up to ca. 0.1molL-1. Characteristic stability and rate constants of the chelation of iron(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline are determined. It was found that turbidities up to 200 FTU and dynamic viscosities up to 20mPas do not affect the determination. The determination of total anthocyanins (as cyanidin-3-O-glucoside) in bilberry and sweet-cherry juices agrees with the reference spectrophotometric method and demonstrates the possibilities of the optoacoustic technique for the analysis of real samples without dilution and with almost no sample preparation.

Abstract
Microfluidics has been undergoing fast development in the past two decades due to its promising applications in biotechnology, medicine, and chemistry. Towards these applications, enhancing concentration sensitivity and detection resolution are indispensable to meet the detection limits because of the dilute sample concentrations, ultra-small sample volumes and short detection lengths in microfluidic devices. A variety of microfluidic techniques for concentrating analytes have been developed. This article presents an overview of analyte concentration techniques in microfluidics. We focus on discussing the physical mechanism of each concentration technique with its representative advancements and applications. Finally, the article is concluded by highlighting and discussing advantages and disadvantages of the reviewed techniques.

Abstract
Results of some studies on the interaction of noble metals with quercetin (Q) and quercetin-5'-sulfonic acid (QSA), the compounds of flavonoid group, are presented. The reactions of chloride complexes of the metals: RuOHCl5(2-), PdCl4(2-), OsCl6(2-), PtCl6(2-) and AuCl4- with both reagents were examined. The redox reactions of ruthenium and gold with Q and QSA have been identified. The reaction of the metals with both reagents results in the formation of the oxidized form of Q that exhibits maximum absorbance at 291 nm. Ruthenium and gold react with the examined reagents under similar conditions: 0.04 M HCl and 1 x 10(-4) M Q (or QSA). The CH3OH + H2O (1:1) (Q) and pure aqueous (QSA) media can be used. The reaction of gold with Q is slow at room temperature. It can be accelerated by heating the solution being examined. The reaction proceeds significantly faster when the water-soluble sulfonic derivative of quercetin, quercetin-5'-sulfonic acid, is used as a reagent. The new species formed can make the basis of spectrophotometric methods for the determination of ruthenium and gold. The molar absorptivities at 291 nm are equal to 5.0 x 10(3) and 2.2 x 10(4) L mol(-1) cm(-1) for Ru and Au, respectively, independently of the reagent used. Some methods for the determination of the content of gold (0.04%) in a cosmetic cream were developed.

Abstract
Recent advances in digestion methods used in the analysis of precious metal samples by spectrometric techniques are reviewed. The applicability of a fire assay, a wet acid treatment, chlorination and alkaline oxidizing fusion to a quantitative recovery of metals from various materials is discussed. Data on the precious metal contents obtained by using particular digestion methods as well as UV-VIS spectrophotometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic emission spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in the examination of various samples are tabulated.

Abstract
A rapid spectrophotometric method for the determination of platinum in 20% Pt-Ru (Pt:Ru (1:1)) carbon-supported catalyst has been developed. The samples of catalyst (0.85-12.60 mg) have been digested 1) in aqua regia after preliminary separation of carbon by burning or 2) directly in aqua regia in the presence of carbon. The detection of platinum was carried out in the obtained solutions after conversion of the metal into the iodide complex. The interfering effect of ruthenium on the detection of platinum was eliminated by the use of derivative spectrophotometry. Platinum was selectively determined by numerical calculation of the 4th-order-derivative absorption spectrum of the mixture of iodide complexes of both metals.
