The role of the counterion in poly(ethylene oxide)-dodecyl sulfate interactions

Choline alkylsulfates--new promising green surfactants

In this work we show how a new promising green and highly water-soluble surfactant can be designed based on recent progress in the knowledge of counterion-headgroup binding and crystallization behavior. The result is the combination of a most classical surfactant anion, dodecylsulfate (DS), with choline (Ch), a natural green cation. The advantage of the physiological metabolite choline is its bulky structure that prevents ChDS from easy crystallization and thus leads to a considerable lowering of the Krafft point down to 0°C. The counterion-headgroup binding is reflected by the aqueous phase behavior of ChDS. Conductivity, surface tension, and cryo-TEM measurements allow the characterization of the dilute micellar region, while the penetration scan technique enables the establishment of a preliminary aqueous phase diagram. In addition, the influence of different mono- and divalent salts on the solubility of ChDS is investigated. The results are compared to the alkali sulfate and alkylcarboxylate homologs, and reveal that ChDS is less sensitive towards addition of salts than, for instance, choline carboxylates due to an increased counterion-headgroup association. Further, cytotoxicity tests on HeLa and SK-Mel 28 cells are presented and compared to other surfactants, showing that ChDS is no more harmful than its sodium counterpart SDS. Taken together, our findings highlight that the harmless green cation choline is of great potential for the design of new surfactants.

Aggregation of perfluoroctanoate salts studied by 19F NMR and DFT calculations: counterion complexation, poly(ethylene glycol) addition, and conformational effects

The aggregation of perfluoroctanoate salts in H(2)O is studied by (19)F NMR on solutions of LiPFO, NaPFO, and CsPFO, without and with the addition of two poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) oligomers of molecular weight 1500 and 3400 Da, respectively, and with the addition of suitable crown ethers. The (19)F chemical shift (cs) trends are monitored, at 25 °C, in a concentration range including the critical micellar concentration (cmc) or, in the presence of PEG, the critical aggregation concentration (cac). The cac values in the samples with PEG are lower than the cmc values of the corresponding samples without PEG; moreover, the (19)F cs trends above the cac and above the polymer saturation concentration reveal and help to explain some peculiarities of the aggregation process of PEG on PFO micelles, which, in the first step, seems to occur while the surfactant concentration in water is still increasing. Also in LiPFO/H(2)O or NaPFO/H(2)O solutions containing 12-crown-4 or 15-crown-5 ethers, suitable to complex Li(+) or Na(+) ions, respectively, the cmc decreases. On the other hand, the micellization process in the presence of crown ethers does not show other peculiarities. The prevailing conformations of the PFO chain are discussed on the basis of quantum-mechanical calculations. The theoretical chemical shifts were computed at the DFT level of theory, taking into account the effects of the environment by means of the IEF-PCM method. The helical structure is the most stable one, but anti conformations are easily accessible, in both the aqueous and fluorinated environment. The comparison between computed and experimental chemical shifts indicates that anti conformations are more important in the micelles than in water and in CsPFO micelles than in LiPFO or NaPFO ones.

Adsorption of anionic surfactants in a nonionic polymer brush: experiments, comparison with mean-field theory, and implications for brush-particle interaction

The adsorption of the anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) brushes was studied using a fixed-angle optical flow-cell reflectometer. We show that, just as in solution, there is a critical association concentration (CAC) for the surfactants at which adsorption in the PEO brush starts. Above the critical micelle concentration (CMC) the adsorption is found to be completely reversible. At low brush density the adsorption per PEO monomer is equal to the adsorption of these surfactants in bulk solution. However, with increasing brush density, the number of adsorbed surfactant molecules per PEO monomer decreases rapidly. This decrease is explained in terms of excluded volume interactions plus electrostatic repulsion between the negatively charged surfactant micelles. Experimentally, a plateau value in the total adsorption is observed as a function of grafting density. The experimental results were compared to the results of an analytical self-consistent field (aSCF) model, and we found quantitative agreement. Additionally, the model predicts that the plateau value found is in fact a maximum. Both experiments and model calculations show that the adsorption scales directly with the polymerization degree of the polymers in the brush. They also show that an increase in the ionic strength leads to an increase in the adsorbed amount, which is explained as being due to a decrease in the electrostatic penalty for the adsorption of the SDS micelles. The adsorption of SDS micelles changes the interactions of the PEO brush with a silica particle. This is illustrated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements of the pull-off force of a silica particle from a PEO brush: at high enough PEO densities, the addition of SDS leads to a very strong reduction in the force necessary to detach the colloidal silica particle from the PEO brush. We attribute this effect to the large amount of negative charge incorporated in the PEO brush due to SDS adsorption.

Aggregation of Cesium Perfluorooctanoate on Poly(ethylene glycol) Oligomers in Water

The interaction of cesium perfluorooctanoate (CsPFO) with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of different molecular weight (300 < or = MW < or = 20000 Da) has been investigated at 298.15 K by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), density, viscosity, and conductivity measurements. Calorimetric titrations exhibited peculiar trends analogous to those already observed for sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Micelles of the perfluorosurfactant, as compared to those of SDS, yield complexes with the polymer of similar thermodynamic stability but are able to interact with shorter PEG oligomers. The average number of surfactant molecules bonded per polymer chain at the saturation is about twice that observed for SDS. ITC data at 308.15 K indicate a larger thermodynamic stability of the aggregates but an almost constant stoichiometry. The peculiar thermal effects and the viscosity trend observed during the titration of an aqueous PEG solution with the surfactant appear consistent with a conformational change of the polymer. The PEG chain would evolve from a strained to an expanded conformation, induced by the growing of the surfactant micellar clusters bonded to the polymer, as suggested in a previous study of the PEG/SDS/H2O system.

Influence of Counterion on the Interaction of Dodecyl Sulfates and Cellulose Ethers

Fluorescence probe techniques together with microcalorimetry and dye solubilization were used to study the interaction between nonionic polymers and anionic surfactants with different monovalent counterions in order to examine the effects of the counterion. The polymers used were the cellulose ethers hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (EHEC). The surfactants were dodecyl sulfates with potassium, sodium, and lithium as counterions (KDS, NaDS, LiDS). The counterion influenced the interaction start concentration as well as the nature of the mixed aggregates formed. The interaction start, according to surfactant concentration, was found to be in the order KDS < NaDS < LiDS for both polymers as well as in aqueous solution. From fluorescence measurements it was found that the KDS-polymer aggregates shield pyrene from water better than the other surfactants, indicating larger aggregates with a more fluid interior. The microcalorimetry measurements confirm that the adsorption of the surfactants onto the polymer is endothermic and entropy driven at the start and as more clusters are formed on the polymer chains the process converts to being exothermic and driven by both enthalpy and entropy.

Micellar Interactions in Nonionic/Ionic Mixed Surfactant Systems

To study the influence of the chemical nature of headgroups and the type of counterion on the process of micellization in mixed surfactant systems, the cmc's of several binary mixtures of surfactants with the same length of hydrocarbon tail but with different headgroups have been determined as a function of the monomer composition using surface tension measurements. Based on these results, the interaction parameter between the surfactant species in mixed micelles has been determined using the pseudophase separation model. Experiments were carried out with (a) the nonionic/anionic C(12)E(6)/SDS ((hexa(ethyleneglycol) mono-n-dodecyl ether)/(sodium dodecyl sulfate)), (b) amphoteric/anionic DDAO/SDS ((dodecyldimethylamine oxide)/(sodium dodecyl sulfate)), and (c) amphoteric/nonionic C(12)E(6)/DDAO mixed surfactant systems. In the case of the mixed surfactant systems containing DDAO, experiments were carried out at pH 2 and pH 8 where the surfactant was in the cationic and nonionic form, respectively. It was shown that the mixtures of the nonionic surfactants with different kinds of headgroups exhibit almost ideal behavior, whereas for the nonionic/ionic surfactant mixtures, significant deviations from ideal behavior (attractive interactions) have been found, suggesting binding between the head groups. Molecular orbital calculations confirmed the existence of the strong specific interaction between (1) SDS and nonionic and cationic forms of DDAO and between (2) C(12)E(6) and the cationic form of DDAO. In the case for the C(12)E(6)/SDS system, an alternative mechanism for the stabilization of mixed micelles was suggested, which involved the lowering in the free energy of the hydration layer. Ideal Mixing of Polymer-Surfactant Complexes of Polyethylene Oxide and Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Plus Sodium Dodecanoate

Mixtures of the anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecanoate (SDoD) were investigated regarding their ability to bind to a hydrophilic nonionic polymer, polyethylene oxide (PEO). By electrical conductivity measurements, the parameters with respect to the onsets of surfactant aggregation were determined in the presence of 0.06 M PEO (critical aggregation concentration) and in its absence (critical micelle concentration). It was found that both plots of these parameters for the multicomponent mixtures against molar fraction of SDoD showed an ideal mixing behavior. The same technique was used to estimate the degree of ionization as a fundamental parameter relating to the interfacial composition of mixed aggregates. In addition, in order to monitor changes in polymer-surfactant structures, we used steady-state quenching fluorescence measurements to characterize the sizes of PEO-SDS/SDoD complexes at different compositions of the complex mixture.
