Selection of appropriate adsorption technique for recovery of VOCs: an analysis

Adsorptive interaction between typical VOCs and various topological zeolites: Mixture effect and mechanism

Adsorption is one of the most feasible and effective methods to alleviate the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pollution. However, the mixture effect and mechanism for competitive adsorption of VOCs on zeolites are barely addressed. In this study, toluene, acetone, and ethyl acetate as prevalent VOCs species were removed by four potential zeolites (13X, USY, Beta, ZSM-5) in both single- and multi-component systems. The structure-property relationship between adsorbate-adsorbent pairs was revealed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray fluorescence, N2 adsorption and density function theory calculation. The molecular polarity and volatility of VOCs species played key roles in adsorption and the dynamic uptakes were generally listed as follows: ethyl acetate > toluene > acetone. As for the above VOCs mixtures, 13X zeolite selectively adsorbed oxygenated VOCs rather than toluene. In contrast, USY exhibited a preference to trap toluene. Ethyl acetate could be readily enriched by ZSM-5 and Beta selectively. The possible explanations and implications are discussed based on the subtle change in electron density. The results obtained are vital for understanding the mixture effect of VOCs adsorption and may guide the selection of proper adsorbent for real applications.

Surface-Enriched Boron-Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles as Photocatalysts for Propene Oxidation

A series of nanostructured boron-TiO₂ photocatalysts (B-X-TiO₂-T) were prepared by sol-gel synthesis using titanium tetraisopropoxide and boric acid. The effects of the synthesis variables, boric acid amount (X) and crystallization temperature (T), on structural and electronic properties and on the photocatalytic performance for propene oxidation, are studied. This reaction accounts for the remediation of pollution caused by volatile organic compounds, and it is carried out at low concentrations, a case in which efficient removal techniques are difficult and costly to implement. The presence of boric acid during the TiO₂ synthesis hinders the development of rutile without affecting the textural properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveals the interstitial incorporation of boron into the surface lattice of the TiO₂ nanostructure, while segregation of B₂O₃ occurs in samples with high boron loading, also confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The best-performing photocatalysts are those with the lowest boron loading. Their high activity, outperforming the equivalent sample without boron, can be attributed to a high anatase and surface hydroxyl group content and efficient photo-charge separation (photoelectrochemical characterization, PEC), which can explain the suppression of visible photoluminescence (PL). Crystallization at 450 °C renders the most active sample, likely due to the development of a pure anatase structure with a large surface boron enrichment. A shift in the wavelength-dependent activity profile (PEC data) and the lowest electron-hole recombination rate (PL data) are also observed for this sample.

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as methane adsorbents: From storage to diluted coal mining streams concentration

Ventilation Air Methane emissions (VAM) from coal mines lead to environmental concern because their high global warming potential and the loss of methane resources. VAM upgrading requires pre-concentration processes dealing with high flow rates of very diluted streams (<1% methane). Therefore, methane separation and concentration is technically challenging and has important environmental and safety concerns. Among the alternatives, adsorption on Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) could be an interesting option to methane selective separation, due to its tuneable character and outstanding physical properties. Most of the works devoted to the methane adsorption on MOFs deal with methane storage. Therefore, these works were reviewed to determine the properties governing methane-MOF interactions. In addition, the metallic ions and organic linkers roles have been identified. With these premises, decisive effects in the methane adsorption selectivity in nitrogen/methane lean mixtures have been discussed, since nitrogen is the most concentrated gas in the VAM stream, and it is very similar to methane molecule. In order to fulfill this overview, the effect of other aspects, such as the presence of polar compounds (moisture and carbon dioxide), was also considered. In addition, engineering considerations in the operation of fixed bed adsorption units and the main challenges associated to MOFs as adsorbents were also discussed.

Experimental Study of the Effect of Different Parameters on the Adsorption and Desorption of Trichloroethylene Vapor on Activated Carbon Particles

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is used as a solvent in various industrial processes. During its use, TCE vaporizes and its vapor pollutes the working atmosphere. Its recovery is very important and activated carbon may be used for this purpose. In the present study, experiments were conducted with activated carbon particles for adsorption and desorption of TCE vapor. The adsorption isotherms were measured over a temperature range of 30-100 °C. Also, the effects of particle sizes (d _p; 355, 500, and 710 μm), initial concentration of TCE vapor (100, 150, 200, and 250 ppm), and temperature (30, 50, and 100 °C) on the adsorption isotherms of TCE on activated carbon with air as the carrier stream were investigated, which were not reported earlier. From the experimental results, it was found that as the particle size decreases the adsorption capacity increases because of the increase in surface area with decrease in size of particles. The effect of the initial concentration of TCE vapor showed proportionality with adsorption capacity. The increase in temperature showed increase in the adsorption capacity. The adsorption isotherms obtained from the experimental results were compared with model isotherms viz. Langmuir and Freundlich. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models showed accurate fits with R ² values of 0.99067 and 0.99142, respectively, suggesting a hybrid adsorption mechanism involving monolayer and multilayer adsorption. From the desorption study, it was found that the recovery of TCE-vapor from activated carbon is possible, and hence its reuse. This study confirms the suitability of activated carbon as an adsorbent for the removal of TCE vapors emitted from industrial and domestic sources. The details of the experiments and results are discussed in this article.

Comprehending adsorption of methylethylketone and toluene and microwave regeneration effectiveness for beaded activated carbon derived from recycled waste bamboo tar

Beaded activated carbons (BACs) were derived from waste bamboo tar through carbonization (500°C for 2 hr) followed by physical activation using carbon dioxide (800-900°C for 2-4 hr). The adsorbent was examined for their physical and chemical properties, adsorption capacities toward methylethylketone (MEK) and toluene, and regenerabilities under microwave heating. It was found that the maximum total surface area reached for bamboo-tar-derived BAC after physical activation was 1364 m² g^-1, and more than 95% of the area was attributed to the microporous structures. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were applied to the adsorption isotherm fitting, and the minimum R² for each model was 0.986, 0.915, and 0.943, respectively. The isosteric heats of adsorption calculated based on D-R parameters for methylethylketone and toluene were 44.04 to 51.50 and 45.88 to 73.27 KJ mol^-1, respectively. They were slightly over the range of physisorption and increased with adsorbate loading, which might be related to the micropore filling mechanism. Microwave regeneration under 600 W of power output removed most of the adsorbate (>93.03%) within 8 min. The results of this study are intended to benefit future study on waste-derived adsorbent in environmental applications.

IMPLICATIONS

Recycling waste bamboo tar for the novel adsorbent preparation is shown feasible in this study. Beaded activated carbon (BAC) synthesized from this waste bamboo tar possessed a high specific surface area, which aided in the capturing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Three adsorption isotherms, Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models can be applied in interpreting the experimental adsorption data, providing information on adsorption heat and possible adsorption mechanism. A potential microwave regeneration method for BAC is tested, showing high desorption efficiencies with minimum heel formation. These findings can provide a new pathway for waste bamboo tar management and VOC abatement using adsorbents.

Variations in microbial community structure and functional gene expression in bio-treatment processes with odorous pollutants

Engineered microbial ecosystems in biofilters have been widely applied to treat odorous gases from industrial emissions. Variations in microbial community structure and function associated with the removal of odorous gases by biofilters are largely unknown. This study performed a metagenomic analysis to discover shifts in microbial community structures in a commercial scale biofilter after treating odorous gas. Our study identified 175,675 functional genes assigned into 43 functional KEGG pathways. Based on the unigene sequences, there were significant changes in microbial community structures in the biofilter after treating odorous gas. The dominant genera were Thiobacillus and Oceanicaulis before the treatment, and were Acidithiobacillus and Ferroplasma after the treatment. A clustering analysis showed that the number of down-regulated microbes exceeded the number of up-regulated microbes, suggesting that odorous gas treatment reduced in microbial community structures. A differential expression analysis identified 29,975 up- and 452,599 down-regulated genes. An enrichment analysis showed 17 classic types of xenobiotic biodegradation pathways. The results identified 16 and 15 genes involved in ammonia and sulfite metabolism, respectively; an analysis of their relative abundance identified several up-regulated genes, which may be efficient genes involved in removing odorous gases. The data provided in this study demonstrate the changes in microbial communities and help identify the dominant microflora and genes that play key roles in treating odorous gases.

A Binder Jet Printed, Stainless Steel Preconcentrator as an In-Line Injector of Volatile Organic Compounds

A conventional approach to making miniature or microscale gas chromatography (GC) components relies on silicon as a base material and MEMS fabrication as manufacturing processes. However, these devices often fail in medium-to-high temperature applications due to a lack of robust fluidic interconnects and a high-yield bonding process. This paper explores the feasibility of using metal additive manufacturing (AM), which is also known as metal 3D printing, as an alternative platform to produce small-scale microfluidic devices that can operate at a temperature higher than that which polymers can withstand. Binder jet printing (BJP), one of the metal AM processes, was utilized to make stainless steel (SS) preconcentrators (PCs) with submillimeter internal features. PCs can increase the concentration of gaseous analytes or serve as an inline injector for GC or gas sensor applications. Normally, parts printed by BJP are highly porous and thus often infiltrated with low melting point metal. By adding to SS316 powder sintering additives such as boron nitride (BN), which reduces the liquidus line temperature, we produce near full-density SS PCs at sintering temperatures much lower than the SS melting temperature, and importantly without any measurable shape distortion. Conversely, the SS PC without BN remains porous after the sintering process and unsuitable for fluidic applications. Since the SS parts, unlike Si, are compatible with machining, they can be modified to work with commercial compression fitting. The PC structures as well as the connection with the fitting are leak-free with relatively high operating pressures. A flexible membrane heater along with a resistance-temperature detector is integrated with the SS PCs for thermal desorption. The proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates that the SS PC can preconcentrate and inject 0.6% headspace toluene to enhance the detector's response.

Adsorption and Diffusion of Benzene in Mg-MOF-74 with Open Metal Sites

We performed molecular simulations to investigate the adsorption and diffusion of benzene in metal-organic framework Mg-MOF-74. At 300 K and 20 Pa, the saturated loading of benzene reaches 8.2 mmol/g, almost twice of (12,12) single-walled carbon nanotube with a similar pore size, and 93% of the benzene molecules in Mg-MOF-74 can desorb at 390 K. The energy analysis indicates that the van der Waals contribution still dominates 70-80% of the total fluid-wall interaction energy compared with the Coulombic contribution. We further analyzed the structure of benzene confined in Mg-MOF-74 by the molecular snapshots, pair correlation functions, orientational order parameters, and local density profiles. It is found that low temperature and high pressure make the structure of adsorbed benzene more similar to that of the liquid benzene. Moreover, the benzene molecules in the contact adsorption layer lie flat on the surface of adsorbent, whereas those molecules near the pore center have no particular orientations. Due to the existence of open metal sites, the structures of adsorbed benzene are more compact and ordered than those of bulk liquid benzene. Consequently, the self-diffusion coefficient of saturated benzene in Mg-MOF-74 at 300 K is significantly lower than that of bulk liquid benzene and confined liquid benzene in slit pores and disordered carbons by 4-5 orders of magnitude. We investigated the separation and diffusion of benzene/cyclohexane in the mixture in Mg-MOF-74 and found that the pores almost completely adsorbed benzene, although its self-diffusion coefficient was slightly lower than that of cyclohexane.

The Use of Zeolites for VOCs Abatement by Combining Non-Thermal Plasma, Adsorption, and/or Catalysis: A Review

Non-thermal plasma technique can be easily integrated with catalysis and adsorption for environmental applications such as volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement to overcome the shortcomings of individual techniques. This review attempts to give an overview of the literature about the application of zeolite as adsorbent and catalyst in combination with non-thermal plasma for VOC abatement in flue gas. The superior surface properties of zeolites in combination with its excellent catalytic properties obtained by metal loading make it an ideal packing material for adsorption plasma catalytic removal of VOCs. This work highlights the use of zeolites for cyclic adsorption plasma catalysis in order to reduce the energy cost to decompose per VOC molecule and to regenerate zeolites via plasma.

Effect of the Preparation Method (Sol-Gel or Hydrothermal) and Conditions on the TiO₂ Properties and Activity for Propene Oxidation

Since the two most commonly used methods for TiO₂ preparation are sol-gel (SG) and hydrothermal (HT) synthesis, this study attempts to compare both methods in order to determine which one is the most suitable to prepare photocatalysts for propene oxidation. In addition, this work studies how the concentration of the HCl used for hydrolysis of the TiO₂ precursor affects the properties of the obtained materials. Also, the effect of avoiding the post-synthesis heat-treatment in a selection of samples is investigated. The photocatalysts are characterized by XRD, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms and UV-vis spectroscopy, and the study tries to correlate the properties with the photocatalytic performance of the prepared TiO₂ samples in propene oxidation. TiO₂ materials with high crystallinity, between 67% and 81%, and surface area (up to 134 m²/g) have been obtained both by SG and HT methods. In general, the surface area and pore volume of the TiO₂-HT samples are larger than those of TiO₂-SG ones. The TiO₂-HT catalysts are, in general, more active than TiO₂-SG materials or P25 in the photo-oxidation of propene. The effect of HCl presence during the TiO₂ synthesis and of the post synthesis heat treatment are much more marked in the case of the SG materials.

Adsorption performance of hydrophobically modified silica gel for the vapors of n-hexane and water

An ordinary silica gel (SG-1) was chosen as the raw material and hydrophobically modified with trimethylchlorosilane under different microwave exposure. The orthogonal experiment was designed to screen the optimized modification method. The hydrophobic properties modified silica gel (SG-2) was analyzed by comparing the difference changes of surface chemistries. Then, the adsorption capacities of SG-1 and SG-2 to the n-hexane vapor and water vapor, respectively, were investigated and compared with the capacities of activated carbon and SG-3 (hydrophobically modified using the same composite modifier without microwave exposure). Meanwhile, there cyclable adsorptions of SG-2 to the two vapors were conducted while the desorptions of vacuum and heat was observed. The results showed that the effect of hydrophobic modification to SG-1 under microwave exposure was obvious and SG-2 also had a very good effect of adsorption for the n-hexane vapor. The modified silica gel shows great potential and effect for the recovery of volatile organic compounds with high content of water.

Monitoring and Control of an Adsorption System Using Electrical Properties of the Adsorbent for Organic Compound Abatement

Adsorption systems typically need gas and temperature sensors to monitor their adsorption/regeneration cycles to separate gases from gas streams. Activated carbon fiber cloth (ACFC)-electrothermal swing adsorption (ESA) is an adsorption system that has the potential to be controlled with the electrical properties of the adsorbent and is studied here to monitor and control the adsorption/regeneration cycles without the use of gas and temperature sensors and to predict breakthrough before it occurs. The ACFC's electrical resistance was characterized on the basis of the amount of adsorbed organic gas/vapor and the adsorbent temperature. These relationships were then used to develop control logic to monitor and control ESA cycles on the basis of measured resistance and applied power values. Continuous sets of adsorption and regeneration cycles were performed sequentially entirely on the basis of remote electrical measurements and achieved ≥95% capture efficiency at inlet concentrations of 2000 and 4000 ppm_v for isobutane, acetone, and toluene in dry and elevated relative humidity gas streams, demonstrating a novel cyclic ESA system that does not require gas or temperature sensors. This contribution is important because it reduces the cost and simplifies the system, predicts breakthrough before its occurrence, and reduces emissions to the atmosphere.

Bioproduction of α-humulene in metabolically engineered Escherichia coli and application in zerumbone synthesis

Zerumbone is a sesquiterpene ketone with potent anti-cancerogenic activities, produced in several ginger species of the Zingiberaceae familiy. We have investigated the biotechnological production of α-humulene, a precursor of zerumbone. By implementing a heterologous mevalonate pathway in combination with the α-humulene synthase expression, we effectively synthesized α-humulene from glucose in Escherichia coli. In this study, we developed a practical and efficient in situ separation method for α-humulene by comparison of extractive and adsorptive strategies. By the in situ adsorption of the product to the hydrophobic resin Amberlite® XAD4 we were able to increase α-humulene yield by 2310% to 60.2 mg/L. Furthermore we present an easy applicable, short subsequent chemical process for the conversion of α-humulene to zerumbone by using transition metal catalysis. To reduce process steps, the chemical reaction was carried out in the same solvent as the eluting solvent that was used to elute α-humulene from the adsorbent resin. By allylic oxidation of α-humulene with manganese^II chloride as a catalyst and tert.-butylhydroperoxide as an oxidizing agent we were able to synthetize zerumbone with a selectivity of 51.6%. Product and byproducts of the oxidation reaction were identified by GC-MS.

Development of metal organic fromwork-199 immobilized zeolite foam for adsorption of common indoor VOCs

Reticulated foam shaped adsorbents are more efficient for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly from low VOC-concentration indoor air streams. In this study composite structure of zeolite and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), referred as ZMF, has been fabricated by immobilization of fine MOF-199 powder on foam shaped Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) Zeolitic structure, referred as ZF. The ZMF possess a uniform and well-dispersed coating of MOF-199 on the porous framework of ZF. It shows higher surface area, pore volume, and VOCs adsorption capacity, as compared to ZF-structure. Post-fabrication changes in selective adsorption properties of ZMF were studied with three common indoor VOCs (benzene, n-hexane, and cyclohexane), using gravimetric adsorption technique. The adsorption capacity of ZMF with different VOCs follow the order of benzene>n-hexane>cyclohexane. In comparison with MOF-199 and ZF, the composite structure ZMF shows improvement in selectivity for benzene from other two VOCs. Further, improvement in efficiency and stability of prepared ZMF was found to be associated with its high MOF loading capacity and unique morphological and structural properties. The developed composite structure with improved VOCs removal and recyclability could be a promising material for small to limited scale air pollution treatment units.

Modelling the removal of volatile pollutants under transient conditions in a two-stage bioreactor using artificial neural networks

A two-stage biological waste gas treatment system consisting of a first stage biotrickling filter (BTF) and second stage biofilter (BF) was tested for the removal of a gas-phase methanol (M), hydrogen sulphide (HS) and α-pinene (P) mixture. The bioreactors were tested with two types of shock loads, i.e., long-term (66h) low to medium concentration loads, and short-term (12h) low to high concentration loads. M and HS were removed in the BTF, reaching maximum elimination capacities (EC_max) of 684 and 33 gm^-3h^-1, respectively. P was removed better in the second stage BF with an EC_max of 130 gm^-3h^-1. The performance was modelled using two multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) that employed the error backpropagation with momentum algorithm, in order to predict the removal efficiencies (RE, %) of methanol (RE_M), hydrogen sulphide (RE_HS) and α-pinene (RE_P), respectively. It was observed that, a MLP with the topology 3-4-2 was able to predict RE_M and RE_HS in the BTF, while a topology of 3-3-1 was able to approximate RE_P in the BF. The results show that artificial neural network (ANN) based models can effectively be used to model the transient-state performance of bioprocesses treating gas-phase pollutants.

Prediction of Adsorption Equilibrium of VOCs onto Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymeric Resin at Environmentally Relevant Temperatures and Concentrations Using Inverse Gas Chromatography

Hyper-cross-linked polymeric resin (HPR) represents a class of predominantly microporous adsorbents and has good adsorption performance toward VOCs. However, adsorption equilibrium of VOCs onto HPR are limited. In this research, a novel method for predicting adsorption capacities of VOCs on HPR at environmentally relevant temperatures and concentrations using inverse gas chromatography data was proposed. Adsorption equilibrium of six VOCs (n-pentane, n-hexane, dichloromethane, acetone, benzene, 1, 2-dichloroethane) onto HPR in the temperature range of 403-443 K were measured by inverse gas chromatography (IGC). Adsorption capacities at environmentally relevant temperatures (293-328 K) and concentrations (P/P_s = 0.1-0.7) were predicted using Dubinin-Radushkevich (DR) equation based on Polany's theory. Taking consideration of the swelling properties of HPR, the volume swelling ratio (r) was introduced and r·V_micro was used instead of V_micro determined by N₂ adsorption data at 77 K as the parameter q₀ (limiting micropore volume) of the DR equation. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of VOCs at environmentally relevant temperatures and concentrations can be predicted effectively using IGC data, the root-mean-square errors between the predicted and experimental data was below 9.63%. The results are meaningful because they allow accurate prediction of adsorption capacities of adsorbents more quickly and conveniently using IGC data.

Application of high silica zeolite ZSM-5 in a hybrid treatment process based on sequential adsorption and ozonation for VOCs elimination

In this study, a hydrophobic synthetic zeolite, namely ZSM-5 is chosen as an adsorbent/catalyst for toluene removal. Experimental results showed that toluene adsorption onto ZSM-5 was favourable, following a Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. ZSM-5 zeolite was regenerated using gaseous ozone at low temperature. Adsorbed toluene was oxidised, releasing mainly CO2 and H2O. Traces of oxidation by-products such as acetic acid and acetaldehyde were formed and remained adsorbed after the oxidativate regeneration with ozone. After four successive cycles of adsorption/ozonation, the adsorption efficiency was not affected (92%-99%). These results showed that volatile organic compound (VOC) removal by adsorption onto ZSM-5 zeolite followed by ozone regeneration could be used as a promising hybrid process for the control of VOC emissions in terms of efficiency.

Evaluation of an adsorption system to concentrate VOC in air streams prior to catalytic incineration

Catalytic combustion is a well-developed process for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In order to reduce both the amount of catalyst needed for incineration and the surface area of recuperative heat exchangers, an evaluation of the use of thermal swing adsorption as a previous step for VOC concentration is made. An air stream containing ethyl acetate and ethanol (employed as solvents in printing processes) has been taken as a case study. Based on the characteristics of the adsorption/desorption system and the properties of the stream to be treated, a monolithic rotor concentrator with activated carbon as adsorbent material is adopted. Once the temperature of the inlet desorption stream TD is chosen, the minimum possible desorption flow rate, WD,min, and the amount of adsorbent material can be properly defined according to the extent of the Mass Transfer Zone (MTZ) at the end of the adsorption stage. An approximate procedure to speed up the calculations needed for sizing the bed and predicting the operating variables is also presented. In the case studied here, the concentration of the VOC stream can reach 6 times that of the primary effluent when TD = 200 °C is chosen.

Adsorption of benzene, cyclohexane and hexane on ordered mesoporous carbon

Ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) with high specific surface area and large pore volume was synthesized and tested for use as an adsorbent for volatile organic compound (VOC) disposal. Benzene, cyclohexane and hexane were selected as typical adsorbates due to their different molecular sizes and extensive utilization in industrial processes. In spite of their structural differences, high adsorption amounts were achieved for all three adsorbates, as the pore size of OMC is large enough for the access of these VOCs. In addition, the unusual bimodal-like pore size distribution gives the adsorbates a higher diffusion rate compared with conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon and carbon molecular sieve. Kinetic analysis suggests that the adsorption barriers mainly originated from the difficulty of VOC vapor molecules entering the pore channels of adsorbents. Therefore, its superior adsorption ability toward VOCs, together with a high diffusion rate, makes the ordered mesoporous carbon a promising potential adsorbent for VOC disposal.

Oxidative regeneration of toluene-saturated natural zeolite by gaseous ozone: the influence of zeolite chemical surface characteristics

In this study, the effect of zeolite chemical surface characteristics on the oxidative regeneration of toluene saturated-zeolite samples is investigated. A Chilean natural zeolite (53% clinoptilolite, 40% mordenite and 7% quartz) was chemically modified by acid treatment with hydrochloric acid and by ion-exchange with ammonium sulphate. Thermal pre-treatments at 623 and 823K were applied and six zeolite samples with different chemical surface characteristics were generated. Chemical modification of natural zeolite followed by thermal out-gassing allows distinguishing the role of acidic surface sites on the regeneration of exhausted zeolites. An increase in Brønsted acid sites on zeolite surface is observed as a result of ammonium-exchange treatment followed by thermal treatment at 623K, thus increasing the adsorption capacity toward toluene. High ozone consumption could be associated to a high content of Lewis acid sites, since these could decompose ozone into atomic active oxygen species. Then, surface oxidation reactions could take part among adsorbed toluene at Brønsted acid sites and surface atomic oxygen species, reducing the amount of adsorbed toluene after the regenerative oxidation with ozone. Experimental results show that the presence of adsorbed oxidation by-products has a negative impact on the recovery of zeolite adsorption capacity.

Evaluation of the potential of volatile organic compound (di-methyl benzene) removal using adsorption on natural minerals compared to commercial oxides

This study is dedicated to the investigation of the potential of volatile organic compounds (VOC) adsorption over low cost natural minerals (bentonite and diatomite). The performances of these solids, in terms of adsorption/desorption properties, were compared to commercial adsorbents, such as silica, alumina and titanium dioxide. The solids were first characterized by different physico-chemical methods and di-methyl benzene (dMB) was selected as model VOC pollutant for the investigation of adsorptive characteristics. The experiments were carried out with a fixed bed reactor under dynamic conditions using Fourier Transform InfraRed spectrometer to measure the evolution of dMB concentrations in the gaseous stream at the outlet of the reactor. The measured breakthrough curves yields to adsorbed amounts at saturation that has been used to obtain adsorption isotherms. The latters were used for determination of the heat involved in the adsorption process and estimation of its values using the isosteric method. Furthermore, the performances of the studied materials were compared considering the adsorption efficiency/cost ratio.

Removal of benzene and methyl ethyl ketone vapor: comparison of hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent with activated carbon

A novel hypercrosslinked polymeric adsorbent (HY-1) with high surface area and specific bimodal pore size distribution in the regions of micropore (0.5-2.0 nm) and meso-macropore (30-70 nm) was prepared. Adsorption properties of benzene and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) vapors onto HY-1 were investigated and compared with a commercial microporous activated carbon (m-GAC). The equilibrium adsorption data showed that the adsorption capacities of benzene and MEK on HY-1 were larger than those of m-GAC at the higher relative pressure. The Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) equation was found to fit the experimental data well. The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption for benzene and MEK were calculated. The m-GAC exhibited much higher values of ΔH(st) for the VOCs than HY-1 at the whole loading studied, which can lead to significant temperature rises during the adsorption step. The results of dynamic experiments revealed that HY-1 had a good dynamic adsorption capacity with a longer breakthrough time and shorter length of mass transfer zone due to its specific bimodal property. Therefore, HY-1 will be a particularly efficient and competitive adsorbent for VOCs recovery, especially at medium-high concentrations.

Biotreatment of a gas-phase volatile mixture from fibreglass and composite manufacturing industries

Acetone, toluene and styrene (ATS) are representative air pollutants emanating during the production process in fibreglass and composite manufacturing industries. In this study, the performance of a steady-state biofilter inoculated with the fungus Sporothrix variecibatus was tested at different empty bed residence times (EBRTs), and at different inlet concentrations of ATS, corresponding to total pollutant loading rates ranging from 30 to 490 gm(-3)hour(-1). Styrene was somewhat better removed (47-100%) in the biofilter than acetone (34-100%) and toluene (42-100%), with maximum elimination capacities (EC(max)) of 108, 72 and 144 gm(-3)hour(-1), for ATS, respectively. Besides, it was observed that, although increasing the concentration of ATS decreased their removal, the presence of toluene also decreased the EC(max) of both acetone and toluene in the ternary mixture. During transient operations, the biofilter was subjected to intermittent shutdown and re-start operations where the gas-phase pollutant flow was stopped for either 5 or 16d. It was observed that, for longer shutdown periods (16d), the biofilter required nearly 8-10d to reach similar removal patterns to those observed before the shutdown phase. Batch biodegradation tests were conducted, using Sporothrix-like microorganisms present in the leachate of the biofilter, with a mixture of ATS as the sole carbon source. Complete removal of ATS was observed within the test period of 168 hours. Styrene was degraded faster, with a specific substrate utilization rate of 0.9 mg styrenemg biomass(-1)hour(-1), followed by toluene (0.6) and acetone (0.44). The effectiveness of the biofilter to reach high total EC (321.3 gm(-3)hour(-1)), and withstand transient operations shows the robustness of this fungal-bioreactor and its suitability to handle emissions from a fibreglass and composite manufacturing industry.

Adsorption of butyl acetate in air over silver-loaded Y and ZSM-5 zeolites: experimental and modelling studies

Adsorption behaviours of butyl acetate in air have been studied over silver-loaded Y (Si/Al=40) and ZSM-5 (Si/Al=140) zeolites. The silver metal was loaded into the zeolites by ion exchange (IE) and impregnation (IM) methods. The adsorption study was mainly conducted at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 13,000 h(-1) with the organic concentration of 1000 ppm while the desorption step was carried out at a GHSV of 5000 h(-1). The impregnated silver-loaded adsorbents showed lower uptake capacity and shorter breakthrough time by about 10 min, attributed to changes in the pore characteristics and available surface for adsorption. Silver exchanged Y (AgY(IE)) with lower hydrophobicity showed higher uptake capacity of up to 35%, longer adsorbent service time and easier desorption compared to AgZSM-5(IE). The presence of water vapour in the feed suppressed the butyl acetate adsorption of AgY(IE) by 42% due to the competitive adsorption of water on the surface and the effect was more pronounced at lower GHSV. Conversely, the adsorption capacity of AgZSM-5(IE) was minimally affected, attributed to the higher hydrophobicity of the material. A mathematical model is proposed to simulate the adsorption behaviour of butyl acetate over AgY(IE) and AgZSM-5(IE). The model parameters were successfully evaluated and used to accurately predict the breakthrough curves under various process conditions with root square mean errors of between 0.05 and 0.07.

Effect of pore structure in mesoporous silicas on VOC dynamic adsorption/desorption performance

The dynamic adsorption/desorption behavior of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene (C7H8) and benzene (C6H6) was evaluated for three kinds of mesoporous silicas of SBA-15, all having almost the same mesopore size of ca. 5.7 nm, and a MCM-41 silica with a smaller pore size of 2.1 nm using a continuous three-step test. The fiberlike SBA-15 silica exhibited exceptionally good breakthrough behavior, a higher VOC capacity, and easier desorption. The fiberlike silica was composed through the catenation of rodlike particles. The rodlike silicas, by comparison, were proven to be less useful in dynamic adsorption processes because of lower dynamic VOC capacities despite having comparative porous parameters with the fiberlike silica. The large dynamic VOC capacity of the fiberlike silica was attributed to the presence of a bimodal pore system consisting of longer, one-dimensional mesopore channels connected by complementary micropores.
