Effect of high-strength ammonia nitrogen acclimation on sludge activity in sequencing batch reactor

Effects of high ammonia loading and in-situ short-cut nitrification in low carbon‑nitrogen ratio wastewater treatment by biocathode microbial electrochemical system

The microbial electrochemical system (MES) has great advantages in wastewater treatment for rapid chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and low sludge yield rate. Herein, biocathode MES was proposed to remove COD from high-ammonia wastewater with low carbon‑nitrogen ratio and regulate the nitrogen forms in effluent for ANAMMOX process. The biocathode was more sensitive to ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) than anode and determined the power generation of MES. With COD of 500-550 mg L^-1 in influent, increasing NH₄⁺-N from 50 to 150 mg L^-1 improved maximum power output (P_max) from 3.0 ± 0.2 to 3.4 ± 0.1 W m^-3, which was then reduced with further increase of NH₄⁺-N from 300 to 600 mg L^-1. However, for the cathodic reductive current, the negative effects of ammonia only revealed with NH₄⁺-N ≥ 450 mg L^-1. The cathodic equilibrium potential drop determined the power degradation, because the increased reductive compounds (NH₄⁺ and COD) in catholyte. The high NH₄⁺-N reduced the abundance of denitrifiers, exoelectrogens and organic-degrading bacteria on electrodes, while that of nitrogen-fixing bacteria increased. External alkalinity addition achieved in-situ short-cut nitrification and nitrite accumulation. With comparable NH₄⁺ and NO₂^-, limited NO₃^- and low COD, the biocathode MES effluent was then suitable for subsequence ANAMMOX process.

Robust Nitritation of Anaerobic Digester Centrate Using Dual Stressors and Timed Alkali Additions

Nitrogen is commonly removed from wastewater by nitrification to nitrate followed by nitrate reduction to N₂. Shortcut N removal saves energy by limiting ammonia oxidation to nitrite, but nitrite accumulation can be unstable. We hypothesized that repeated short-term exposures of ammonia-oxidizing communities to free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) would stabilize nitritation by selecting against nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Accordingly, we evaluated ammonium oxidation of anaerobic digester centrate in two bench-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), seeded with the same inoculum and operated identically but with differing pH-control strategies. A single stressor SBR (SS/SBR) using pH set-point control produced HNO₃, while a dual stressor SBR (DS/SBR) using timed alkalinity addition (TAA) produced HNO₂ (ammonium removal efficiency of 97 ± 2%; nitrite accumulation ratio of 98 ± 1%). The TAA protocol was developed during an adaptation period with continuous pH monitoring. After adaptation, automated TAA enabled stable nitritation without set-point control. In the SS/SBR, repeatedly exposing the community to FA (8-10 h/exposure, one exposure/cycle) selected for FA-tolerant ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas sp. NM107) and NOB (Nitrobacter sp.). In the DS/SBR, repeatedly exposing the community to FA (2-4 h/exposure, three exposures/cycle) and FNA (4-6 h/exposure, two exposures/cycle) selected for FA- and FNA-resistant AOB (Nitrosomonas IWT514) and against NOB, stabilizing nitritation.

Experimental sulphide inhibition calibration method in nitrification processes: A case-study

Sulphide is one of the inhibitors in the nitrification process in WWTP in regions with sulphate rich soils. As little information is currently available on sulphide nitrification inhibition, the aim of this study was to develop a method based on a modification of the Successive Additions Method to calibrate the effect of sulphide on the activity of ammonia-oxidising bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidising bacteria (NOB). The developed method was then applied to activated sludge samples from two WWTPs with different influent sulphide concentrations. In both cases, sulphide had a greater inhibitory effect on NOB than AOB activity. The sulphide inhibition was found to be lower in the activated sludge fed with sulphide-rich wastewater. The AOB and NOB activity measured at different sulphide concentrations could be accurately modelled with the Hill inhibition equation.

Role of sludge retention time in mitigation of nitrous oxide emission from a pilot-scale oxidation ditch

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emission from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has become a focus of attention due to its significant greenhouse effect. In this study, the role of sludge retention time (SRT) in mitigation of N₂O emission from a pilot-scale oxidation ditch was systematically investigated. The activated sludge system that operated at SRT of 25 days demonstrated significantly lower N₂O emission factor, higher resistance to ammonia overload and aeration failure shock than those obtained at SRT of 15 days no matter which hydraulic retention time (HRT) was adopted. Batch experiments revealed that nitrifier denitrification (ND) was the primary mechanism of N₂O generation. However, more microbes affiliated with Nitrospira genera were harbored in the system at SRT 25 d, which could effectively avoid nitrite accumulation, a key factor promoting N₂O generation by ND. PICRUSt results further suggested the system at SRT 25 d possessed higher genetic potential for N₂O reduction reflected by the more abundant nitrous-oxide reductase.

Characterizing the free ammonia exposure to the nutrients removal in activated sludge systems

As a by-product during liquid production, the liquor wastewater exhibits tremendous environmental risks and may cause undesirable effects to the biological systems due to the high concentration of ammonia.

Enhanced organic pollutant removal influenced by activated-ferric-sludge

The primary goal of this study was to compare the pollutant removal efficiency of the reactivated activated-ferric-sludge (AFS) with that of the activated sludge (AS). Most tested organic pollutants were preferably removed by reactivated AFS. The optimal reactivated conditions for AFS were a reactivation time of 3 h, pH of 5-9, AFS dose of 5 g/L and dissolved oxygen of 2-6 mg/L. The results revealed a positive correlation between microbial activity and the removal efficiency of organic pollutants, with a higher microbial activity being associated with a better removal efficiency of organic pollutants. Additionally, variations in extracellular polymeric substances were found to be crucial to the microbial activity and adsorption capacity of reactivated AFS. After reactivation, reactivated AFS was superior to AS for the removal ofmost pollutants. Finally, the mechanism of AFS reactivation was investigated. Overall, the results of the present study demonstrate that reactivated AFS has the potential for widespread application in the removal of organic pollutants during the wastewater treatment process.

Effect of anaerobic digestion on the high rate of nitritation, treating piggery wastewater

The amount of piggery wastewater as domestic livestock is increasing. The volume of piggery wastewater produced is less than the volume of other wastewaters, but piggery wastewater has a heavy impact on wastewater streams due to an extremely high concentration of nitrogen and COD. In this study, laboratory reactors were operated using piggery wastewater and the effluent of anaerobic digester from piggery wastewater plants. The purpose of this study was to induce the nitritation process, which is an economically advantageous nitrogen removal method that converts ammonium nitrogen into nitrite. The results showed that the effluent of anaerobic digester from piggery wastewater was more efficient than raw piggery wastewater in terms of inducing nitritation. It can be deduced that nitritation is largely affected by an organic fraction of piggery wastewater. It can also be concluded that a small amount of biodegradable organic matter in piggery wastewater is efficient in inducing nitritation.
