Effect of JPEG compression on the diagnostic accuracy of periapical images in the detection of root fracture

The ability of a periapical radiograph to exhibit the fracture depends on many factors including, but not limited to, the resolution of the image. The quality can be reduced by the image compression. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compressions on the diagnostic capability of periapical images in the detection of root fractures. Ten dry human mandibles containing 151 teeth were used in this study. Mandibles were radiographed with direct digital imaging sensor using the paralleling technique. Four observers detected root fracture on the images saved in one uncompressed and two compressed formats. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and anova analyses were performed to compare the performance of the three different systems and evaluate the effect of the compression on the accuracy of root fracture detection. Results did not show any statistically significant difference between the original, large images presented in tagged image file format (TIFF) and the two compressed images (JPEG medium file and JPEG small file images) in the detection of root fractures. The intra-rater comparison showed a significant consistency in the detection of the fracture. The compression reduced the file size considerably (from 1.77 MB to 453 and 95 Kb), but it did not affect the accuracy of root fracture detection. The file size reduction, on the other hand, is very beneficial for image electronic storage and mainly in teleradiology.

Evaluation of proximal caries in images resulting from different modes of radiographic digitalization

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performances of observers in diagnosing proximal caries in digital images obtained from digital bitewing radiographs using two scanners and four digital cameras in Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and tagged image file format (TIFF) files, and comparing them with the original conventional radiographs.

METHOD

In total, 56 extracted teeth were radiographed with Kodak Insight film (Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY) in a Kaycor Yoshida X-ray device (Kaycor X-707; Yoshida Dental Manufacturing Co., Tokyo, Japan) operating at 70 kV and 7 mA with an exposure time of 0.40 s. The radiographs were obtained and scanned by CanonScan D646U (Canon USA Inc., Newport News, VA) and Genius ColorPage HR7X (KYE Systems Corp. America, Doral, FL) scanners, and by Canon Powershot G2 (Canon USA Inc.), Canon RebelXT (Canon USA Inc.), Nikon Coolpix 8700 (Nikon Inc., Melville, NY), and Nikon D70s (Nikon Inc.) digital cameras in JPEG and TIFF formats. Three observers evaluated the images. The teeth were then observed under the microscope in polarized light for the verification of the presence and depth of the carious lesions.

RESULTS

The probability of no diagnosis ranged from 1.34% (Insight film) to 52.83% (CanonScan/JPEG). The sensitivity ranged from 0.24 (Canon RebelXT/JPEG) to 0.53 (Insight film), the specificity ranged from 0.93 (Nikon Coolpix/JPEG, Canon Powershot/TIFF, Canon RebelXT/JPEG and TIFF) to 0.97 (CanonScan/TIFF and JPEG) and the accuracy ranged from 0.82 (Canon RebelXT/JPEG) to 0.91 (CanonScan/JPEG).

CONCLUSION

The carious lesion diagnosis did not change in either of the file formats (JPEG and TIFF) in which the images were saved for any of the equipment used. Only the CanonScan scanner did not have adequate performance in radiography digitalization for caries diagnosis and it is not recommended for this purpose.

Digitized hand-wrist radiographs: Comparison of subjective and software-derived image quality at various compression ratios

INTRODUCTION

The objectives of this study were to compare the effect of JPEG 2000 compression of hand-wrist radiographs on observer image quality qualitative assessment and to compare with a software-derived quantitative image quality index.

METHODS

Fifteen hand-wrist radiographs were digitized and saved as TIFF and JPEG 2000 images at 4 levels of compression (20:1, 40:1, 60:1, and 80:1). The images, including rereads, were viewed by 13 orthodontic residents who determined the image quality rating on a scale of 1 to 5. A quantitative analysis was also performed by using a readily available software based on the human visual system (Image Quality Measure Computer Program, version 6.2, Mitre, Bedford, Mass). ANOVA was used to determine the optimal compression level (P < or =.05).

RESULTS

When we compared subjective indexes, JPEG compression greater than 60:1 significantly reduced image quality. When we used quantitative indexes, the JPEG 2000 images had lower quality at all compression ratios compared with the original TIFF images. There was excellent correlation (R2 >0.92) between qualitative and quantitative indexes.

CONCLUSIONS

Image Quality Measure indexes are more sensitive than subjective image quality assessments in quantifying image degradation with compression. There is potential for this software-based quantitative method in determining the optimal compression ratio for any image without the use of subjective raters.

Lossy JPEG compression: easy to compress, hard to compare

OBJECTIVES

To review the literature on lossy compression in dental radiography and to discuss the importance and suitability of the methodology used for evaluation of image compression.

METHODS

A search of Medline (from 1966 to October 2004) was undertaken with the search expression "(Radiography, dental) and compression". Inclusion criterion was that the reference should be evaluating the effect of lossy image compression on diagnostic accuracy. For all included studies, information in relation to mode of image acquisition, image content, image compression, image display, and method of image evaluation was extracted.

RESULTS

12 out of 32 papers were included in the review. The design of these 12 studies was found to vary considerably. Parameters used to express the degree of information loss (DIL) were either or both compression ratio (CR) and compression level (CL). The highest acceptable CR reported in the studies ranged from 3.6% to 15.4%. Furthermore, different CR values were proposed even for the same diagnostic task, for example, for caries diagnosis CR ranged from 6.2% to 11.1%.

CONCLUSION

Lossy image compression can be used in clinical radiology if it does not conflict with national law. However, the acceptable DIL is difficult to express and standardize. CR is probably not suitable to express DIL, because it is image content dependent. CL is also probably not suitable to express DIL because of the lack of compression software standardization.

Reproducibility of and file format effect on digital subtraction radiography of simulated external root resorptions

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate, in simulated external root resorptions (ERR), two factors that may affect results of digital subtraction radiography (DSR): (1) intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility and (2) effects of digital file formats (TIFF, BMP and JPEG) on the estimation of mineral loss.

METHODS

Eleven incisors were radiographed three times (NR, no resorption; SR, small--#1/4 round bur; and LR, large--#2 round bur) on standardized projections. The resulting images were reproduced and saved as TIFF, JPEG and BMP file formats. The pairs of TIFF images (NR x SR and NR x LR) were subtracted three times at 1 week intervals by three observers. One observer subtracted pairs of images (NR x SR and NR x LR) for all file formats. For each subtraction the resorption area was selected and mean pixel density values were calculated.

RESULTS

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) (P = 0.05) showed no statistical differences for intraobserver and interobserver values. Mean pixel density values were: observer A, 121.60 +/- 2.56 (NR x SR) and 111.84 +/- 4.04 (NR x LR); observer B, 121.86 +/- 2.50 (NR x SR) and 110.92 +/- 3.36 (NR x LR); and observer C, 121.70 +/- 2.39 (NR x SR) and 111.10 +/- 2.67 (NR x LR). Also, no statistical differences were found between file formats for LR (TIFF, 110.88 +/- 2.79; JPEG, 111.35 +/- 3.35; BMP, 111.00 +/- 2.70) and for SR between TIFF (121.30 +/- 2.34) and JPEG (120.46 +/- 1.51) or BMP (121.67 +/- 2.18) file formats. Differences were found between the JPEG and BMP groups.

CONCLUSIONS

DSR is reproducible in simulated ERR, and JPEG or BMP file formats do not affect results.

Comparative evaluation of JPEG and JPEG2000 compression in quantitative digital subtraction radiography

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the impact of JPEG and the novel JPEG2000 compression standard on quantitative digital subtraction radiography (DSR) and to determine the acceptable JPEG2000 compression ratios for DSR.

METHODS

Nine dry pig mandible sections were radiographed three times ('Baseline', 'No change', and 'Gain') with standardized projection geometry. Bone gain was simulated by adding artificial bone chips (1, 4 and 15 mg). Images were registered, compressed by JPEG and JPEG2000 using compression ratios (CR) of 1 : 7, 1 : 16, 1 : 22, and 1 : 31, and then subtracted. Image distortion was assessed objectively by calculating average pixel error and peak signal to noise ratio. No change areas in compressed and subtracted 'No change-Baseline' images and bone gain volumes in compressed and subtracted 'Gain-Baseline' images were calculated for both compression standards and compared.

RESULTS

JPEG introduced less distortion at low CRs, while JPEG2000 was superior at higher CRs. At CR of 1 : 7, no significant difference between JPEG and JPEG2000 was found. JPEG2000 yielded better results for no change measurements at higher CRs. Volumes of simulated bone gain were overestimated when JPEG and underestimated when JPEG2000 compression was used.

CONCLUSIONS

At CR of 1 : 7 JPEG and JPEG2000 performed similarly, which indicates that CR of 1:7 in JPEG2000 can be used for DSR if images are registered before compression. At higher CRs, JPEG2000 is superior to JPEG but image distortions are too high for reliable quantitative DSR.

Impact of lossy compression on diagnostic accuracy of radiographs for periapical lesions

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the lossy Joint Photographic Experts Group compression for endodontic pretreatment digital radiographs.

STUDY DESIGN

Fifty clinical charge-coupled device-based, digital radiographs depicting periapical areas were selected. Each image was compressed at 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 48, and 64 compression ratios. One root per image was marked for examination. Images were randomized and viewed by four clinical observers under standardized viewing conditions. Each observer read the image set three times, with at least two weeks between each reading. Three pre-selected sites per image (mesial, distal, apical) were scored on a five-scale score confidence scale. A panel of three examiners scored the uncompressed images, with a consensus score for each site. The consensus score was used as the baseline for assessing the impact of lossy compression on the diagnostic values of images. The mean absolute error between consensus and observer scores was computed for each observer, site, and reading session.

RESULTS

Balanced one-way analysis of variance for all observers indicated that for compression ratios 48 and 64, there was significant difference between mean absolute error of uncompressed and compressed images (P <.05). After converting the five-scale score to two-level diagnostic values, the diagnostic accuracy was strongly correlated (R (2) = 0.91) with the compression ratio.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study suggest that high compression ratios can have a severe impact on the diagnostic quality of the digital radiographs for detection of periapical lesions.
