Abstract
By utilizing nanoreactor-like structures, the immobilization of macromolecules such as calixarenes and cyclodextrins (CD) with bucket-like structures provides new possibilities for engineered surface-molecule systems. The practical use of any molecular system depends on the availability of a universal procedure for immobilizing molecules with torus-like structures on various surfaces while maintaining identical operating parameters. There are currently several steps, including toxic solvent-based approaches using modified β-CD to covalently attach to surfaces with multistep reactions. However, the existing multistep process results in molecular orientation, restricts the accessibility of the hydrophobic barrel of β-CD's for practical use, and is effectively unable to use the surfaces immobilized with β-CD for a variety of applications. In this study, it was demonstrated that β-CD attached to the oxide-based semiconductor and metal surfaces through a condensation reaction between the hydroxyl-terminated oxide-based semiconductor/metal oxide and β-CD in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) as a medium. The primary benefit of SCCO2-assisted grafting of unmodified β-CD on various oxide-based metal and semiconductor surfaces is that it is a simple, efficient, one-step process and that it is ligand-free, scalable, substrate-independent, and uses minimal energy. Various physical microscopy and chemical spectroscopic methods were used to analyze the grafted β-CD oligomers. The application of the grafted β-CD films was demonstrated by the immobilization of rhodamine B (RhB), a dye, and dopamine, a drug. The in situ nucleation and growth of silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) in the molecular systems were studied for antibacterial and tribological properties by utilizing the guest-host interaction ability of β-CD.

Abstract
β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is the potential drug carrier to deliver antitumor drugs like doxorubicin (DOX). However, the mechanism for the inclusion complex formation is still unclear and needs to be explored. This study investigated the effect of pH on the inclusion of DOX into thiolated β-CD (β-CD-SH) by electrochemical and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The electrochemical study shows a clear difference at different pH values. The redox peak due to the DOX is strongly influenced by pH. At neutral pH, the peak intensity decreases with time, while slight variation is observed at acidic and basic pH, depicting the association of DOX to the β-CD-SH cavity at neutral pH. Also, due to the association, the charge transfer resistance variation increased with time at neutral pH and decreased at basic and acidic pH. The electrochemical study was further supported by MD simulation, suggesting that the cyclodextrin (CD) ring gets slightly elongated due to the flipping of glucose units, specifically at neutral pH leading to a strong association. Also, another significant result observed that the DOX forms an inclusion complex with β-CD-SH in quinol conformation, not in quinone. Briefly, the study provides the necessary molecular binding information for designing an effective β-CD-based targeted drug delivery system.

Abstract
Owing to environmental pollution and increasingly strict regulations, heavy metals have attracted the attention of many researchers in various disciplines. Alginate and chitosan derivatives have gained popularity as biosorbents for water treatment. An increase in the number of publications on modified biosorbents for the biosorption of toxic compounds reveals widespread interest in examining the requirements and positive contribution of each modification type. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of using alginate and chitosan for adsorption. Well-known modifications based on chitosan and alginate, namely, grafting, functionalization, copolymerization and cross-linking, as well as applications in the field of adsorption processes, especially amino acid functionalization, are reviewed. The selection criteria for the best biosorbents and their effectiveness and proposed mechanism of adsorption are discussed critically. In the conclusion, the question of why these adsorbents need modification before use is addressed.

Abstract
Water is one of the basic necessities of life and having clean water is extremely important for human health. In recent years, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-based polymers and nanosystems have been extensively studied as adsorbents for the purpose of water purification. They present high efficiency and capability to remove inorganic, organic, and heavy metal impurities from wastewater as compared to conventional methods of water purification. β-CDs are cyclic polysaccharides having specific dimension of hydrophobic cavities and hydrophilic functional groups. The hydrophobic cavities form inclusion complexes through host-guest interactions. The hydroxyl groups form sites of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction with pollutants. Additionally, they are also the sites of modification to bring about different derivatisation and polymerization reactions in order to impart desirable properties for efficient adsorption material. This article comprises of various derivatives of β-cyclodextrins: their nanoparticulate systems and their characterization and applications to remove different types of impurities from wastewater. The chemical reactions for their synthesis and mechanism of adsorption are highlighted.

Abstract
This study presents the synthesis of silica particles bearing two beta-cyclodextrin (BCD) (beta-cyclodextrin-BCD-OH and diamino butane monosubstituted beta-cyclodextrin-BCD-NH2). The successful synthesis of the BCD-modified silica was confirmed by FT-IR and TGA. Using contact angle measurements, BET analysis and SEM characterization, a possible formation mechanism for the generation of silica particles bearing BCD derivatives on their surface was highlighted. The obtained modified silica displayed the capacity to remove bisphenol A (BPA) from wastewater due to the presence of the BCD moieties on the surface of the silica. The kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reached equilibrium after 180 min for both materials with qe values of 107 mg BPA/g for SiO2-BCD-OH and 112 mg BPA/g for SiO2-BCD-NH2. The process followed Ho's pseudo-second-order adsorption model sustaining the presence of adsorption sites with different activities. The fitting of the Freundlich isotherm model on the experimental results was also evaluated, confirming the BCD influence on the materials' adsorption properties.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to highlight and provide an update on the current development of pesticide remediation methods, focusing on the utilization of different cyclodextrin (CD) molecules. Because of less environmental impact and non-toxic nature, CDs are beneficial for pesticide remediation, reducing environmental risk and health hazards. They are advantageous for the removal of pesticides from contaminated areas, as well as for better pesticide formulation and, posing significant effects on the hydrolysis or degradation of pesticides. The review focuses on the current trend and innovations regarding the methods and strategies employed for using CDs in designing pesticide remediation. Nowadays, in addition to the conventional experimental techniques, molecular simulation approaches are significantly contributing to the study of such phenomena and hence are recognized as a widely used tool.

Abstract
In this research, we report on the synthesis of mesoporous silicas with various quantities of immobilized oligosaccharide groups and different pore ordering degree. The hydrothermal co-condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate and β-cyclodextrin-containing organosilane in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide template was employed. The purpose of this investigation was to show the opportunity of increasing β-cyclodextrin content in silica matrix by changing the molar ratio of initial reagents during organosilane synthesis and to determine whether the enhancing of immobilized groups on the surface influences on model aromatic compound adsorption from water. It was prepared several β-cyclodextrin-organosilanes by modification of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane with oligosaccharide (the molar composition of reaction mixtures were 1:1, 3:1, and 5:1) with using N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole as linking agent. Three types of MCM-41 materials were obtained with 0.018, 0.072, and 0.095 mmol g-1 β-cyclodextrin-group loading according to chemical analysis of silicas. The IR spectroscopy and potentiometric titration were also performed to confirm the presence of functional groups in the silica matrix. Nitrogen sorptometry experiments exhibited the decrease of high surface area (from 812 to 457 m2 g-1) and the average pore diameter (from 1.06 to 0.60 cm3 g-1) of synthesized silicas with increasing of immobilized oligosaccharide groups. The influence of β-cyclodextrin-organosilane presence on the forming of hexagonally arranged porous structure of silicas was evaluated by X-ray diffraction and TEM analyses. As the loading of oligosaccharide groups increases in obtained silicas, the (100) reflex in diffraction patterns is even less intense and broader, denoting the decrease of long-range pore ordering. Adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effect of β-cyclodextrin groups' attendance in silica matrix on benzene uptakes from aqueous solutions. Experimental kinetic curves of benzene adsorption on synthesized silicas were compared with theoretical models of Lagergren and Ho-McKay for pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order processes. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to evaluate adsorption processes and parameters. Obtained β-cyclodextrin-containing MCM-41 silicas demonstrate adsorption level performance of known samples and could be very promising for benzene uptakes from aqueous solutions in water treatment processes.

Abstract
The chemical interaction between the surface of hydroxylated or aminated silicas and β-cyclodextrin, mono-tosyl-β-cyclodextrin and the bromine derivative of heptakis-[6- O-( p-tosyl-β-cyclodextrin)] has been investigated using IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis with programmed heating, pH titration, weight adsorption method, elemental analysis and quantitative chemical analysis of the surface compounds. The optimum conditions for chemical grafting of β-cyclodextrins onto the silica surface were established. The formation of supramolecular structures, viz. inclusion complexes between immobilized β-cyclodextrin and the hormone of pineal gland (melatonin), on the surface of highly dispersed silicas of 1:1 composition was demonstrated.

Abstract
Novel hydrophilic molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with high adsorption capacity were used as the sorbents to remove 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) from surface water and wastewater samples. Kinetic studies, dynamic adsorption and selectivity experiments of hydrophilic MIPs were investigated in this study. The results indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of 2,4-DNP on hydrophilic MIPs was 138.9 mg g(-1) and kinetic experimental data were described by the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, the effects of flow rate, initial concentration, pH value, and humic acid on the removal efficiency of 2,4-DNP were optimized. Compared with the active carbon, carbon nanotube, C18 sorbents and common MIPs, the removal efficiency of hydrophilic MIPs (100 mg) was very high with all above 92 % even though the sampling volume was more than 1 L. Investigated results of five times adsorption-desorption cycles indicated hydrophilic MIPs were high stability. In a word, the obtained results demonstrated that hydrophilic MIPs could be used as the effective sorbents for 2,4-DNP removal in practical application.

Loading antifungal drugs onto silica particles grafted with cyclodextrins by means of inclusion complex formation at the solid surface. Int J Pharm 2012; 439:234-45. Abstract
Immobilization of antifungal drugs to solid particles has been addressed in order to limit the skin penetration to the skin surface during topical administration. Antifungal drug griseofulvin has been immobilized at the surface of silica particles by formation of its inclusion complex with β-cyclodextrins grafted to silica. A simple and fast process for loading griseofulvin into the hydrophobic cavity of cyclodextrins at the surface of the solid particles in aqueous suspension has been designed. It allowed the formation of the griseofulvin:cyclodextrin inclusion complex of 1:1 stoichiometry to completion. Grafting β-cyclodextrins to silica surface has been performed in a two-step procedure. The coupling agent 3-amino-propylmethyldiethoxysilane was reacted onto fumed silica particles as a first step. The second step was the reaction of grafted primary amino groups with tosylated β-cyclodextrin that led to β-cyclodextrin grafted silica. Loading griseofulvin onto grafted silica particles have been investigated by IR spectroscopy and by tracking possible crystals of griseofulvin in aqueous suspension by optical and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Successful formation of the inclusion complex at the surface of grafted silica suggested a strong adsorption of griseofulvin by means of heterogeneous nucleation of crystals, followed by inclusion complexation taking place between the partners being in close proximity at the surface of silica particles. The high adsorption capacity of CD-grafted silica for griseofulvin compared to bare silica and amino-grafted silica supports this interpretation.

Abstract
The inclusion of inorganic anions such as SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-), and HPO(4)(2-) into the cavity of β-cyclodextrin monolayers on Au was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and chronocoulometric measurements of the competitive inclusion with ferrocene. The inclusion amounts of ferrocence in 0.2 M Na(2)SO(4), NaNO(3), and Na(2)HPO(4) solutions were less than 6% of the adsorption amount of β-cyclodextrin on Au, resulting in the apparent inhibition of the ferrocene redox reaction. The surface association constants of these anions reached about 10 on a logarithmic scale and were much higher than those for the inclusion of common organic guest compounds. A stronger anion inclusion was also demonstrated by the QCM response corresponding to the replacement of a preincluded organic guest with sulfate upon the injection of the sulfate solution. Quantitative analysis of the XPS data suggested a 1:1 association for each of these anions per surface β-cyclodextrin. There was no detectable inclusion for ClO(4)(-), Cl(-), and Br(-).

Abstract
Urethane copolymer sorbent materials that incorporate β-cyclodextrin (CD) have been prepared and their sorption properties with chlorinated aromatic compounds (i.e., pentachlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) have been evaluated. The sorption properties of granular activated carbon (GAC) were similarly compared in aqueous solution at variable pH conditions. The sorbents displayed variable BET surface areas as follows: MDI-X copolymers (< 101 m2/g), CDI-X copolymers (< 101 m2/g), and granular activated carbon (GAC ~103 m2/g). The sorption capacities for the copolymers sorbents are listed in descending order, as follows: GAC > CDI-3 copolymer ≈ MDI-3 copolymer. The sorption capacity for the aromatic adsorbates with each sorbent are listed in descending order, as follows: 2,4-dichlorophenol > 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid > pentachlorophenol. In general, the differences in the sorption properties of the copolymer sorbents with the chlorinated organics were related to the following factors: (i) surface area of the sorbent; (ii) CD content and accessibility; and (iii) and the chemical nature of the sorbent material.

Abstract
In this paper, we report the fabrication of carbonaceous nanofiber (CNF) membranes functionalized by beta-cyclodextrins (CNF-β-CD membrane) and their application for molecular filtration. The chemically synthesized carbonaceous nanofibers were first functionalized by β-CD, and the free-standing CNF membrane can be prepared by a simple filtration process. The membrane shows a remarkable capability to function as an ideal molecular filter through complexation of phenolphthalein molecules with the cyclodextrin molecules grafted on the CNFs. As a typical dye pollutant, fuchsin acid can also be effectively removed from the solution through such a membrane. Engineering the surface of this carbonaceous nanofiber membrane may allow it to be used for other applications such as chiral separation and drug delivery.

Abstract
Cyanotoxins are potent toxic compounds produced by cyanobacteria during algal blooms, which threaten drinking water supplies. These compounds can poison and kill animals and humans. The host-guest interactions of α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins (CD) with problematic cyanotoxins, including microcystins (MCs) and nodularin (NOD), were investigated to demonstrate the potential application of CDs for the removal of these toxins from drinking water or applications related to their separation or purification. MCs and NOD have a hydrophobic Adda chain, which contains diene and benzene functional groups. The complexation of these cyanotoxins with CDs was monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The (1)H NMR spectra for MCs are unchanged upon addition of α-CD (smallest host). However, addition of larger hosts, β-CD and γ-CD, leads to significant changes in chemical shifts of the benzene and diene resonances on the 3-amino-9-methoxy-2,6,8-trimethal-10-phenyldeca-4,6-dienoic acid (Adda) chain of MCs and NOD. Solution pH, natural organic matter, and salinity do not appreciably influence the host-guest complexation under our experimental conditions. The experimental binding constants for MCs and NOD with γ-CD are relatively strong, ranging from 1155 to 507 M(-1). The observed changes in chemical shifts for specific protons and competitive binding experiments demonstrate a 1:1 inclusion complex between γ-CD and MCs or NOD, with the Adda chains threading through the CD ring, resulting in an inclusion complex. Our results suggest that CD-type substrates are useful hosts for the complexation of MCs and NOD. CDs can be readily attached to a number of polymeric or solid supports and their functionality tailored to strengthen specific host-guest interactions. With further development of such materials, CD host-guest chemistry may find direct application in the removal and/or separation science of these compounds.

Abstract
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the air provoke health and environmental concerns. This paper focuses on the absorption method to treat industrial polluted air loaded with VOCs. The key variable of this treatment being the choice of a suitable liquid absorbent, the aim of this research work is to investigate the effectiveness and the regeneration of a new potential family of absorbent: cyclodextrins (CDs). All CDs derivatives tested are able to decrease the Henry's law constant of toluene: a reduction of volatility up to 95% may be obtained, depending on CD nature and concentration. Moreover, absorption experiments show that beta-CD, which presents the highest absorption ability, is 250 time more efficient than water. The absorption efficiency is not totally correlated with static experiments, suggesting that, in addition to Henry's law constants and inclusion compounds stability, toluene diffusion into such solutions has to be taken into account. It is also to be noted that salt and pH variations seem to have little influence on the absorption capacity of CDs, which may be of great interest for industrial applications. Finally, since production of solid compounds was not observed during these experiments and since temperature decreases the capture ability in a drastic way, regeneration of the washing solution can be achieved by heating the solution in combination with air stripping.

Abstract
The study of adsorptive and chemical immobilization of beta-cyclodextrin on a surface of hydroxylated silicas with various porous structure is described. Using IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetrical analysis with a programmed heating, and chemical analysis of the silica surface, it is shown that the process of adsorption-desorption of beta-cyclodextrin depends on the porous structure of the silica. The reaction of esterification was used for chemical grafting of beta-cyclodextrin on the surface of hydroxylated silicas. Hydrolytic stability of silicas chemically modified by beta-cyclodextrin apparently is explained by simultaneous formation of chemical and hydrogen bonds between surface silanol groups and hydroxyl groups of beta-cyclodextrin. The uptake of the cations Cu(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) and the anions Cr(VI) and As(V) by silicas modified with beta-cyclodextrin is investigated as a function of equilibrium ion concentrations. The increase of ion uptake and selectivity of ion extraction in comparison with starting silicas is established. It is due to the formation of surface inclusion complexes of the "host-guest" type in which one molecule of beta-cyclodextrin interacts simultaneously with several ions.

Abstract
The immobilization behavior of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) by various cyclodextrins (CDs) was studied. Although it has a low hydrophobic character and high polarity compared to other organics, MTBE was effectively immobilized by CDs. The immobilization isotherm was a type of Freundlich isotherm. The immobilization capacity of beta-CDs was the largest of the natural CDs. The initial apparent association constant for MTBE-CD complex follows the order: gamma = beta > methyl-beta > hydroxypropyl beta > alpha. The difference in these constants is related to the size of MTBE and CDs. The size of beta- and gamma-CD is large enough to encapsulate MTBE molecule into the cavity, which that of alpha-CD is too small to encapsulate MTBE.
