Theoretical studies on vibrational spectra of some halides of Group IIB elements

Chemically Accurate Thermochemistry of Cadmium: An ab Initio Study of Cd + XY (X = H, O, Cl, Br; Y = Cl, Br)

Using a composite coupled cluster method employing sequences of correlation consistent basis sets for complete basis set (CBS) extrapolations and with explicit treatment of core-valence correlation and scalar and spin-orbit relativistic effects, the 0 K enthalpies of a wide range of cadmium-halide reactions, namely, Cd + (HCl, HBr, ClO, BrO, Cl2, BrCl, Br2) have been determined to an estimated accuracy of +/-1 kcal/mol. In addition, accurate equilibrium geometries, harmonic frequencies, and dissociation energies have been calculated at the same level of theory for all the diatomic (e.g., CdH, CdO, CdCl, CdBr) and triatomic (CdHCl, CdHBr, CdClO, CdBrO, CdCl2, CdBrCl, CdBr2) species involved in these reactions, some for the very first time. Like their mercury analogues, all of the abstraction reactions are predicted to be endothermic, while the insertion reactions are strongly exothermic with the formation of stable linear, Cd-centric complexes. With the exception of CdH and the reactions involving this species, the present results for the remaining Cd-containing systems are believed to be the most accurate to date.

Theoretical studies on vibrational spectra of some halides of group IVB elements

The vibrational spectra of group IVB elements halides MX4 (M=Ti(IV), Zr(IV), Hf(II); X=F, Cl, Br and I), have been investigated by ab initio RHF, MP2 and density functional theory B3LYP method with LanL2DZ basis sets. The optimized geometries, calculated vibrational frequencies and Far-IR intensities of MX4 are evaluated via comparison with experimental data. The vibrational frequencies, calculated by these methods, are compared to each other. The results indicate that B3LYP method is more reliable than RHF and MP2 methods for the frequencies calculations for these compounds. With this method, some vibrational frequencies of M2X6(2+)(M=Ti(IV), Zr(IV) and Hf(II); X=F, Cl, Br and I) are also predicted.

Ab initio and DFT studies on vibrational spectra of some halides of group IIIB elements

The vibrational spectra of some group IIIB elements halides MX(3) and their dimmers, M(2)X(6) (M=Sc(III), Y(III), La(III); X=F, Cl, Br, I), have been systematically investigated by ab initio restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) and density functional B3LYP methods with LanL2DZ and SDD basis sets. The optimized geometries and calculated vibrational frequencies are evaluated via comparison with experimental values. The vibrational frequencies, calculated by two methods with different basis sets, are compared to each other. The effect of the methods and the basis sets used on the calculated vibrational frequencies are discussed. Some vibrational frequencies of these complexes are also predicted.

Modeling the Effect of Substitution on the Pb(OAc)4 Mediated Oxidative Cleavage of Steroidal 1,2-Diols

[reaction: see text] We comment on the effects of angular substitution on the outcome of a Pb(OAc)4 (LTA) mediated heterodomino reaction, with selected bicyclic unsaturated 1,2-diols, which is considered to proceed through a series of transformations in a single vessel. The first two, oxidative and pericyclic, are followed by the key step, an electrophilic addition of LTA to the olefin, responsible for the course of the domino process. In this study, the electrophilic addition of LTA to the double bond has been modeled with B3LYP, where the 6-31G* basis set is used for C, O, and H atoms and the LANL2DZ method is used for Pb. The modeling in the gaseous phase and in solution has revealed the concerted nature of the addition of LTA to the double bond of the intermediate. The fact that LTA adds from the same side as the substituent R, for R=H and from the opposite side when R=CH3 has been attributed to steric hindrance, which causes deformation of the olefinic intermediate.
