Development and validation of a drug clinical trial participation feelings questionnaire for cancer patients

Objective

The study was designed to develop and validate a new drug clinical trial participation feelings questionnaire (DCTPFQ) for cancer patients.

Methods

Data collection and analysis involved a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. There were two phases to this study. Phase Ⅰ involved developing a questionnaire to establish a list of items to be included in the pool: A theoretical framework was constructed based on the transitions theory and the Roper-Logan-Tierney theory. After incorporating a theoretical framework, interviewing participants, and reviewing the literature, 44 items were generated. After a Delphi consultation and a pilot test, 36 items proceeded to item analysis and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and a four-factor structure with 21 items was formed. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), test-retest reliability, criteria-related validity, and internal consistency tests were conducted in phase II to examine the psychometric properties.

Results

There were 21 items on the DCTPFQ, ranging from 1 (fully disagree) through 5 (fully agree). As a result of EFA and CFA, the four factors of DCTPFQ could be verified, including cognitive engagement, subjective experience, medical resources, and relatives and friends' support. Test-retest reliability of the DCTPFQ was 0.840, and Cronbach's alpha was 0.934. DCTPFQ is significantly correlated with the Fear of Progression Questionnaire-short form (r = 0.731, p < 0.05) and the Mishel's Uncertainty in Illness Scale (r = 0.714, p < 0.05).

Conclusion

The DCTPFQ is a useful tool for measuring the drug clinical trial participation feelings among cancer patients.

Construction and validity of educational technology in audiovisual media on premature newborn care

OBJECTIVES

to construct and validate an educational video storyboard about care for premature newborns at home.

METHODS

a methodological study, with the construction of an educational video storyboard, validated with 14 judges. Content was selected from scoping review. For data collection, a validated instrument was used. The criterion for validity was agreement greater than 80%, analyzed using the Content Validity Index.

RESULTS

the storyboard construction was guided by the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning theoretical framework. Construction and validity took place from May to December 2020. The storyboard's final version lasted 10 minutes, and was validated in terms of objective, structure, presentation and relevance, with a Content Validity Index of 0.9.

CONCLUSIONS

the storyboard of the educational video proved to be valid and adequate for health promotion in developing care for premature newborns at home.

Informal Breast Milk Sharing in a Muslim Country: The Frequency, Practice, Risk Perception, and Risk Reduction Strategies Used by Mothers

Introduction: Turkey is the first and only Islamic country which has initiated a process to establish a milk bank. However, the effort was abandoned because of religious concerns. Informal breast milk sharing has become a practical alternative to some. Research Aims: To document the religious concerned views and attitudes toward breast milk sharing and to determine risk reduction strategies of mothers in an Islamic country. Materials and Methods: Participants comprised volunteers from relevant forums or members of social media groups on the Internet. The participants (n = 435) were divided into three groups: those who did not share milk (n = 371), donors (n = 48), and receivers (n = 16). A prepared questionnaire was used for each group as a data collection tool. Results: 14.7% of the participants were experienced in informal milk sharing. Seventy-five percent of the recipients and 85.4% of the donors did not enter into a written agreement. Religious rules on milk sharing were reflected in three ways: asking about the infant's gender, limiting the number of sharing parties to 3, and knowing the identity of the donor or recipient. Of the participants, 77.3% believed that it was necessary to establish a milk bank in Turkey. However, 19.5% of the respondents reported that they would not feed their infant with donor milk because of reasons related to the issue of "milk kinship" in Islam. Conclusions: Informal milk sharing is a reality and risks similar to those stated in the literature are undertaken. Milk sharing is frequently performed independent of religious concerns and commercial purposes, Comprehensive measures to minimize disease transmission are not routinely implemented.

[Adhesion to leprosy treatment: inherent difficulties of the patients]

This research, carried in Guaiúba, Ceará, Brazil aimed to identify the difficulties for the treatment compliance of leprosy patients, relating the associated factors. This is a qualitative study; data was collected from a home visit in January 2009 using an interview guideline containing seven guiding questions. Diagnosed leprosy patients with history of non compliance to treatment participated of the study. It was used Roper, Logan and Tierney's Model of Life Activities. The speeches of the subjects were classified according to twelve life activities. The model utilization made possible a holistic approach on the barriers lived by leprosy patients in the compliance to drug treatment, in order to know the life activities of these patients to a possible adaptation of the actions addressed to this clientele.

Care planning in the emergency department

There are many demands placed on staff working in emergency departments such as the currently witnessed overcrowding, bed shortages and long waiting times for patients. Despite these demands nursing care needs to be carefully assessed, planned and documented. This study aimed to examine attitudes of staff towards the use of a nursing care plan in the emergency department. The sample comprised the total population (n=38) of all nursing staff working in an emergency department at one regional general hospital in the Republic of Ireland. The method adopted was a survey approach which employed the use of standardised questionnaires comprising both open and closed questioning styles. Raw statistical data were analysed using SPSS for Windows while the qualitative data arising from the open-ended questions were manually analysed for themes. The data obtained in this study identified that care plans were valued by respondents, stating that they contribute to holism, increased nurse/patient contact time and better communication. The findings also identified that there is a need for continuing education, further research and a need to address issues in relation to specific patient groups, including paediatrics, minor injuries, mental health and the elderly attending the emergency department.

Developing a plan of care using the Roper, Logan and Tierney model

This care study, using the Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing, examines the presentation of a patient with a history of drug misuse and a current diagnosis of infective endocarditis and hepatitis C. While this particular model of nursing incorporates 12 activities of daily living, this care study will deal with three specific activities: maintaining a safe environment, communication and breathing. One of the main concerns arising from this care study was the inadequate management of pain for the patient. It is suggested in the literature that healthcare professionals do not always adequately address pain management, primarily because of fear of causing addiction. The authors suggest that the patient's history of drug misuse in this study may have further mitigated against him receiving adequate pain control.
