Stationary Explosive Trace Detection System Using Differential Ion Mobility Spectrometry (DMS)

Detecting trace amounts of explosives is important for maintaining national security due to the growing threat of terror attacks. Particularly challenging is the increasing use of homemade explosives. Therefore, there is a constant need to improve existing technologies for detecting trace amounts of explosives. This paper describes the design of a stationary device (a gate) for detecting trace amounts of explosives and explosive taggants and the design of differential ion mobility spectrometers with a focus on the gas system. Nitromethane (NM), trimeric acetone peroxide (TATP), hexamine peroxide (HMTD), and explosive taggants 2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dinitrobutane (DMDNB) and 4-nitrotoluene (4NT) were used in this study. Gate measurements were carried out by taking air from the hands, pocket area, and shoes of the tested person. Two differential ion mobility spectrometers operating in two different modes were used as explosive detectors: a mode with a semi-permeable membrane to detect explosives with high vapor pressures (such as TATP) and a mode without a semi-permeable membrane (using direct introduction of the sample into the measuring chamber) to detect explosives with low vapor pressures (such as HMTD). The device was able to detect trace amounts of selected explosives/explosive taggants in 5 s.

Applications of mass spectrometry in cosmetic analysis: An overview

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a crucial tool in cosmetic analysis. It is widely used for ingredient screening, quality control, risk monitoring, authenticity verification, and efficacy evaluation. However, due to the diversity of cosmetic products and the rapid development of MS-based analytical methods, the relevant literature needs a more systematic collation of information on this subject to unravel the true potential of MS in cosmetic analysis. Herein, an overview of the role of MS in cosmetic analysis over the past two decades is presented. The currently used sample preparation methods, ionization techniques, and types of mass analyzers are demonstrated in detail. In addition, a brief perspective on the future development of MS for cosmetic analysis is provided.

Rapid and selective screening of organic peroxide explosives using acid-hydrolysis induced chemiluminescence

Organic peroxide explosives (OPEs) are unstable, non-military, contemporary security threats often found in improvised explosive devices. Chemiluminescence (CL) can be used to detect OPEs, via radical formation consisting of peroxide moieties (-O-O-) under acidic conditions. However, selectivity for specific OPEs is hampered by the ubiquitous background of H₂O₂. Herein, we report the differentiation of hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD), triacetone triperoxide (TATP), and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) by specific flow injection analysis-CL (FIA-CL) signal profiles, after H₂SO₄ treatment. The radical degradation pathway of each structure, and its corresponding FIA-CL profile, was explored using mass spectrometry to reveal the rapid loss of -O-O- from TATP and HMTD structures, while MEKP formed CL signal-sustaining oligomers, as opposed to the immediate attenuation of H₂O₂. The CL response for OPEs in an aqueous media, measured via the described FIA-CL method, enabled ultra-trace limits of detection down to 0.40 μM for MEKP, 0.43 μM for HMTD, and 0.40 μM for TATP (combined linear range 1-83 μM with 95% confidence limit, n = 12). Expanded uncertainties of measurement (UM) of MEKP = ±0.98, HMTD = ±1.03, and TATP = ±1.1 (UM included probabilities of false positive and false negative as well as standard deviations of % recoveries and limit of detections of OPEs). Direct aqueous sample introduction via FIA-CL thus offers the prospect of rapid and selective screening of OPEs in security-heightened settings (e.g., airports), averting false positives from more ubiquitous H₂O₂.

Advances in epitope molecularly imprinted polymers for protein detection: a review

Epitope molecularly imprinted polymers (EMIPs) are novel imprinted materials using short characteristic peptides as templates rather than entire proteins. To be specific, the amino acid sequence of the template peptide is the same as an exposed N- or C-terminus of a target protein, or its amino acid composition and sequence replicate a similar conformational arrangement as the same amino acid residues on the surface of the target protein. EMIPs have a good application prospect in protein research. Herein, we focus on classification of epitope imprinting techniques, methods of epitope immobilization on matrix materials including boronate affinity immobilization, covalent bonding immobilization, physical adsorption immobilization and metal ion chelation immobilization, and application of EMIPs in peptides, proteins, target imaging and target therapy fields. Finally, the main problems and future development are summarized.
