Solvent-free crystallization of ZSM-5 zeolite on SiC foam as a monolith catalyst for biofuel upgrading

Microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of waste cooking oil to monocyclic aromatics under a bifunctional SiC ball catalyst

Catalytic pyrolysis technology proves to be a highly effective approach for waste cooking oil management. However, high-pressure drops and easy deactivation of powder catalysts hinder the industrialization of this technology. In this study, a bifunctional SiC ball (ZSM-5/SiC ball structured) catalyst was prepared to produce monocyclic aromatics. Bifunctional SiC ball catalyst demonstrates notable microwave-responsive properties and remarkable catalytic efficacy. Results showed that the content of monocyclic aromatics under BFSB catalysis with microwave heating was the highest. Weight hourly space velocity is no longer one of the main factors affecting microwave-assisted catalytic pyrolysis under bifunctional SiC ball catalyst. Monocyclic aromatics content did not decrease significantly and was still higher than 86% when space velocity increased from 30 h-1 to 360 h-1. The highest space velocity could only be 180 h-1 under Powder ZSM-5, and the content of the monocyclic aromatics dropped rapidly to 67.68%. Furthermore, even after five operating cycles, the content of monocyclic aromatics with bifunctional SiC ball catalyst continues to surpass the initial content observed with Powder ZSM-5 at 500 °C and 180 h-1. Related characterizations revealed that coking is the primary cause of catalyst deactivation for both catalyst types; however, the bifunctional SiC ball catalyst exhibits a 29.1% lower occurrence of polyaromatic coke formation compared to Powder ZSM-5.

Synthesis of hierarchical mordenite by solvent-free method for dimethyl ether carbonylation reaction

A series of hierarchical mordenite (MOR) catalysts were synthesized by adding soft templates via the solvent-free method. The influence of different kinds of soft templates on the structure, morphology and acid sites of mordenite were systematically characterized. The characterization results revealed that the addition of soft templates could successfully introduce hierarchical structure into the system while maintaining good crystallinity. The specific surface area and pore volume became larger. Surfactants could also affect the amount and distribution of acid sites, which in turn would affect the dimethyl ether carbonylation activity. Compared with cationic and nonionic surfactants, the addition of anionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate could result in more Al species to preferentially enter into the 8 member ring, thus enhancing the amount of active sites for the carbonylation reaction while weakening the strength. Meanwhile, the addition of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate could also reduce the number of strong acid sites in the 12 member ring and obviously improve the carbonylation performance.

Porous Silicon Carbide (SiC): A Chance for Improving Catalysts or Just Another Active-Phase Carrier?

There is an obvious gap between efforts dedicated to the control of chemicophysical and morphological properties of catalyst active phases and the attention paid to the search of new materials to be employed as functional carriers in the upgrading of heterogeneous catalysts. Economic constraints and common habits in preparing heterogeneous catalysts have narrowed the selection of active-phase carriers to a handful of materials: oxide-based ceramics (e.g. Al₂O₃, SiO₂, TiO₂, and aluminosilicates-zeolites) and carbon. However, these carriers occasionally face chemicophysical constraints that limit their application in catalysis. For instance, oxides are easily corroded by acids or bases, and carbon is not resistant to oxidation. Therefore, these carriers cannot be recycled. Moreover, the poor thermal conductivity of metal oxide carriers often translates into permanent alterations of the catalyst active sites (i.e. metal active-phase sintering) that compromise the catalyst performance and its lifetime on run. Therefore, the development of new carriers for the design and synthesis of advanced functional catalytic materials and processes is an urgent priority for the heterogeneous catalysis of the future. Silicon carbide (SiC) is a non-oxide semiconductor with unique chemicophysical properties that make it highly attractive in several branches of catalysis. Accordingly, the past decade has witnessed a large increase of reports dedicated to the design of SiC-based catalysts, also in light of a steadily growing portfolio of porous SiC materials covering a wide range of well-controlled pore structure and surface properties. This review article provides a comprehensive overview on the synthesis and use of macro/mesoporous SiC materials in catalysis, stressing their unique features for the design of efficient, cost-effective, and easy to scale-up heterogeneous catalysts, outlining their success where other and more classical oxide-based supports failed. All applications of SiC in catalysis will be reviewed from the perspective of a given chemical reaction, highlighting all improvements rising from the use of SiC in terms of activity, selectivity, and process sustainability. We feel that the experienced viewpoint of SiC-based catalyst producers and end users (these authors) and their critical presentation of a comprehensive overview on the applications of SiC in catalysis will help the readership to create its own opinion on the central role of SiC for the future of heterogeneous catalysis.

Solvent-Free Synthesis of SAPO-34 Zeolite with Tunable SiO2/Al2O3 Ratios for Efficient Catalytic Cracking of 1-Butene

Solvent-free synthesis methodology is a promising technique for the green and sustainable preparation of zeolites materials. In this work, a solvent-free route was developed to synthesize SAPO-34 zeolite. The characterization results indicated that the crystal size, texture properties, acidity and Si coordination environment of the resulting SAPO-34 were tuned by adjusting the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio in the starting mixture. Moreover, the acidity of SAPO-34 zeolite was found to depend on the Si coordination environment, which was consistent with that of SAPO-34 zeolite synthesized by the hydrothermal method. At an SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 0.6, the SP-0.6 sample exhibited the highest conversion of 1-butene (82.8%) and a satisfactory yield of light olefins (51.6%) in the catalytic cracking of 1-butene, which was attributed to the synergistic effect of the large SBET (425 m2/g) and the abundant acid sites (1.82 mmol/g). This work provides a new opportunity for the design of efficient zeolite catalysts for industrially important reactions.

Recent Progresses in the Design and Fabrication of Highly Efficient Ni-Based Catalysts With Advanced Catalytic Activity and Enhanced Anti-coke Performance Toward CO2 Reforming of Methane

CO₂ reforming of methane (CRM) can effectively convert two greenhouse gases (CO₂ and CH₄) into syngas (CO + H₂). This process can achieve the efficient resource utilization of CO₂ and CH₄ and reduce greenhouse gases. Therefore, CRM has been considered as a significantly promising route to solve environmental problems caused by greenhouse effect. Ni-based catalysts have been widely investigated in CRM reactions due to their various advantages, such as high catalytic activity, low price, and abundant reserves. However, Ni-based catalysts usually suffer from rapid deactivation because of thermal sintering of metallic Ni active sites and surface coke deposition, which restricted the industrialization of Ni-based catalysts toward the CRM process. In order to address these challenges, scientists all around the world have devoted great efforts to investigating various influencing factors, such as the option of appropriate supports and promoters and the construction of strong metal-support interaction. Therefore, we carefully summarized recent development in the design and preparation of Ni-based catalysts with advanced catalytic activity and enhanced anti-coke performance toward CRM reactions in this review. Specifically, recent progresses of Ni-based catalysts with different supports, additives, preparation methods, and so on, have been summarized in detail. Furthermore, recent development of reaction mechanism studies over Ni-based catalysts was also covered by this review. Finally, it is prospected that the Ni-based catalyst supported by an ordered mesoporous framework and the combined reforming of methane will become the future development trend.
