Abstract
According to World Health Organization (WHO), iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is considered the most prevalent nutritional deficiency worldwide, affecting approximately 30% of the global population. While gastrointestinal bleeding and menstruation in women are the primary causes of IDA, insufficient dietary iron intake and reduced iron absorption contribute to the condition. The aim of IDA treatment is to restore iron stores and normalise haemoglobin levels in affected patients. Iron plays a critical role in various cellular mechanisms, including oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymatic activity. During pregnancy, the mother's blood volume increases, and the growing foetus requires a significant increase in iron. Iron deficiency during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes such as maternal illness, low birth weight, preterm birth, and intrauterine growth restriction. Iron supplementation is commonly used to treat IDA; however, not all patients benefit from this therapy due to factors such as low compliance and ineffectiveness. In the past, IV iron therapy was underutilised due to its unfavourable and occasionally unsafe side effects. Nevertheless, the development of new type II and III iron complexes has improved compliance, tolerability, efficacy, and safety profiles. This article aims to provide an updated overview of the diagnosis and management of IDA during pregnancy. It will discuss the advantages and limitations of oral versus intravenous iron and the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and overall management of IDA in pregnancy.

Abstract
Anaemia is one of the most prevalent issues encountered throughout pregnancy, with Iron deficiency anaemia and megaloblastic anaemia being the most common causes in India. It is critical to address anaemia in pregnancy since it has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes like preterm delivery, low-birth-weight newborns, fetal mortality, and, in certain circumstances, maternal death. The maternal mortality rate (MMR) is one of the significant health challenges, particularly in developing countries. It has substantially impacted the population's social situation and requires quick management. In this review article, we discuss recent developments and advancements in treating maternal anaemia with the aid of some government health programs, which can help with lowering the risk of maternal mortality. The primary goal of this manuscript is to raise awareness about anaemia in pregnancy. We examined the literature on anaemia during pregnancy, with a view to offering current and unambiguous guidance for preventing and managing this illness, which, if not appropriately managed, can result in severe maternal and neonatal problems.

Abstract
Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a public health problem worldwide. Shengxuening Tablet (SXN) has been used for the treatment of various types of anemia, attaining high efficacy. Objective: To evaluate the safety of SXN as well as its preventive and therapeutic efficacy against IDA across different population groups. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, the China Knowledge Network, the China Biomedical Literature Database, the Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, and the China Science and Technology Journal Database was searched for relevant clinical trials through June 2022 and a systematic review and meta-analysis of the identified studies was undertaken. Results: A total of 39 trials involving 4,562 cases were included in the meta-analysis. The total efficiency of SXN was superior than the control group in improving red blood cell (RBC) count [SMD = 1.31, 95% CI (0.7, 1.91), p < 0.0001], hemoglobin (Hb) [SMD = 1.11, 95% CI (0.75, 1.46), p < 0.00001], mean corpuscular volume (MCV) [SMD = 0.5, 95% CI (0.33, 0.68), p < 0.00001], total serum iron (SI) levels [SMD = 1.87, 95% CI (1.3, 2.44), p < 0.00001], and transferrin saturation (TSAT) levels [SMD = 2.07, 95% CI (1.86, 2.27), p < 0.00001]. Besides, the total effects of SXN to improve mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) [SMD = 0.12, 95% CI (-0.16, 0.4), p = 0.41], mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) [SMD = 0.03, 95% CI (-0.18, 0.24), p = 0.77], hematocrit (HCT) [SMD = 0.65, 95% CI (-0.25, 1.55), p = 0.16], and serum ferritin (SF) levels [SMD = 0.59, 95% CI (-0.67, 1.85), p = 0.36] and reduce the total iron binding capacity (TIBC) [SMD = 0.34, 95% CI (-0.07, 0.74), p = 0.1] was comparable to that of iron supplementation. SXN significantly raised the total effective rates of IDA [risk ratio (RR) = 1.06, 95% CI (1.02, 1.09), p = 0.0005] and was associated with fewer adverse events [RR = 0.24, 95% CI (0.18, 0.31), p < 0.00001], fewer adverse pregnancy outcomes [RR = 0.34, 95% CI (0.2, 0.57), p < 0.0001], and lower anemia recurrence rates during pregnancy [RR = 0.29, 95% CI (0.1, 0.84), p = 0.02]. Regarding prevention, the effects of SXN to maintain the RBC count, Hb level and other IDA-related parameters were comparable to that of control group and SXN reduced the risk of IDA incidence during pregnancy. Conclusion: SXN demonstrated promising efficacy in the treatment and prevention of IDA and outperformed routine iron formulations in terms of safety, thus rendering SXN a reliable treatment option for IDA. Abstract
Through its functions in oxygen delivery, electron transport, and enzymatic activity, iron is crucial for the operation of all cells. High metabolic rate cells need more iron and are more likely to malfunction when there is an iron deficit. Since the mother's blood volume expands during pregnancy, and the fetus grows and develops, there is a sharp increase in the need for iron. Negative pregnancy outcomes, such as increased maternal sickness, low birthweight, preterm, and intrauterine growth restriction, are linked to iron deficiency. IDA, or nutritional iron deficiency anemia, affects more than two billion people worldwide and is the most prevalent disease. Based on the regression-based analysis, the prevalence of anemia in the World Health Organization's global database was calculated to be 14%. According to recent data, there are 17.4% more IDA cases among pregnant women in industrialized countries than in poor ones (up to 56% more cases). Despite the fact that oral iron supplementation is frequently used to treat IDA, not all patients benefit from oral iron therapy. This is caused by a number of things, which include the adverse effects of oral iron, resulting in low compliance and ineffectiveness. In a sizable group of patients taking oral iron preparations, the adverse effects primarily include GI symptoms. Intravenous iron was previously underutilized since it was linked to unfavorable and occasionally dangerous side effects. New type II and III iron complexes have been created recently, though, and they offer superior compliance and toleration in addition to strong efficacy and a good safety profile.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Anemia in pregnancy is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity. There is increasing awareness amongst obstetricians about the need to screen for iron deficiency anemia (IDA), as well as growing literature on diagnosis and treatment. This review aims to summarize causes, consequences, treatment, and evaluation of IDA in pregnancy. RECENT FINDINGS National guidelines provide varying guidance on diagnosis and treatment of IDA in pregnancy. Serum ferritin is a helpful adjunct for the diagnosis of IDA. Oral iron remains an option for treatment; absorption is improved with every other day dosing and is effective for patients able to tolerate. Emerging studies on modern generations of intravenous (IV) iron demonstrate shorter infusion times and improved safety profiles. Notably, recent UK guidelines provide consideration for universal IV iron supplementation for treatment of anemia beyond 34 weeks of pregnancy. SUMMARY Iron, in dietary, oral, and IV forms, has been found effective in resolving anemia in pregnancy. Pregnant people with IDA in the third trimester are more likely to benefit from IV iron. Future studies designed and powered to assess maternal and perinatal morbidity indicators and blood transfusion rates can strengthen recommendations.

Iron deficiency anaemia and low BMI among adolescent girls in India: the transition from 2005 to 2015. Public Health Nutr 2020; 24:1577-1582. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The current study explored changes in trend of anaemia and BMI among currently pregnant nullipara adolescent women against socio-economic determinants in India from 2005 through 2015. The association between anaemia in currently pregnant nullipara adolescent women v. currently pregnant nullipara older women of reproductive age was also explored. DESIGN We used the 2005 and the 2015 nationally representative Indian Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The outcomes of interest, anaemia and BMI, were measured based on the DHS methodology following WHO standards and indicators. Place of residence, educational attainment and wealth quintiles were used as determinants in the analysis. SETTING India. PARTICIPANTS In total, 696 adolescent girls from the India 2005 DHS and 3041 adolescent girls from the India 2015 DHS. RESULTS The 10-year transition from 2005 to 2015 showed differences between the least and most wealthy sections of society, with heaviest gains in anaemia reduction over time among the latter (from 50·0 to < 40·0 %). The odds of anaemia were significantly higher among the adolescent population when compared with adult women both in 2005 and in 2015 (OR = 1·2). CONCLUSIONS Despite an overall improvement in the prevalence of both BMI < 18·5 and anaemia among adolescents nullipara in India, the adjusted risk of anaemia in the latter category was still significantly higher as compared with their adult counterparts. Since the inequalities evidenced during the first round of DHS remained unchanged in 2015, more investments in universal health care are needed in India.
