Effect of air temperature on growth performance, apparent digestibilities, rumen fermentation and serum metabolites in Altay and Hu lambs

Fat-tailed Altay sheep are indigenous to the Altay prefecture and well adapted to severe cold and sparse pasture of poor quality. Hu sheep were introduced to this region in the 1970s and are raised mainly in feedlots. We hypothesized that the dietary energy utilization would differ between breeds and predicted that Altay sheep would be more efficient than Hu sheep, in particular at a low air temperature. To test this prediction, we examined growth performance, apparent digestibilities, rumen fermentation and serum metabolites in Altay (32 ± 2.6 kg) and Hu sheep (31 ± 2.7 kg) at air temperatures of -5 and 20°C. Average daily gain (ADG), feed and metabolizable energy intakes were greater in Altay than in Hu sheep (p < .01), and all were greater at -5°C than 20°C (p < .01). Body mass gain-to-feed intake ratio was higher in Altay than in Hu sheep (p < .001), but was not affected by air temperature (p > .10). Rumen total volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration was greater in Hu than in Altay sheep (p < .05) and was greater at 20°C than at -5°C (p < .05), while rumen microbial protein concentration was greater in Altay than in Hu sheep (p < .05). Rectal temperature was higher at -5°C than 20°C (p < .05) and was similar between breeds (p > .05). Serum glucose, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) and urea-N concentrations were higher in Hu than in Altay sheep (p < .05). It was concluded that Altay sheep are better able to cope with poor quality diets as they had higher digestibility of nutrients, ADG and body mass gain-to-feed intake ratio than Hu sheep.

Current practices on sheep and beef farms in New Zealand for depriving sheep of feed prior to transport for slaughter

AIM

To assess current practices on sheep and beef farms that deprive sheep of feed prior to transport to facilitate effluent management and processing at slaughter.

METHODS

A national telephone survey of 122 sheep and 346 sheep and beef farmers was conducted in March and April 2010. They were asked how long sheep were held off green feed prior to transport and why, what environment the sheep were held in, and if that period ever varied.

RESULTS

Of the 468 respondents, 303 (65%) removed their sheep from green feed 3-12 h before transport for slaughter, with longer periods reported in the South than North Island. The main reasons given were to reduce the volume of effluent for transport operators (n=174), to prevent wool staining during transport (n=173), and that sheep were better suited to load and travel empty (n=171). Water was provided during feed deprivation by 313 farmers. The period of food deprivation could be altered in response to requirements of transporters and processors, the weather, and by the class of stock involved, although 115/468 (25%) farmers stated that they never changed their normal protocol.

CONCLUSIONS

Amongst survey respondents, common practices compared favourably with recommendations to reduce effluent during transportation. Previous studies have investigated the effects of fasting lambs whilst in lairage prior to slaughter and focussed on carcass quality such as carcass weight and tenderness. Changes in liveweight and gastrointestinal tract contents suggest feed deprivation reduces the risk of defaecation and urination contributing to the accumulation of effluent during transport and of carcass contamination during processing. However, the point at which that risk is acceptable to transport and processing is unclear. Fasting results in physiological changes indicative of altered metabolism but it is not clear when those changes are indicative of adaptation to food deprivation or metabolic depletion and compromised welfare. There may be opportunities to improve the logistics of livestock preparation, transport and processing.

An examination of potential indices of fasting time in commercially slaughtered sheep

A total of 215 market lambs was slaughtered either directly off grass or after 12, 24, 36, 48 or 72 h from food withdrawal. They had access to water at all times. Half the animals were given a moderate exercise and were subjected to venepuncture about 0.5 h before slaughter. Samples of blood were collected at exsanguination and samples of liver and muscle subsequently removed during carcass dressing. Blood packed cell volume and the concentrations of plasma glucose, lactate, free fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate and total protein, and glycogen in liver and muscle, were examined as potential indices of fasting time. Fasting caused significant changes in all parameters but only beta-hydroxybutyrate increased progressively with longer food-withdrawal times and was unaffected by exercise or the stress of venepuncture. The pattern of response to fasting could be described by an equation of the Gompertz form. Sex of animal did not affect fasting responses but origin of blood (venepuncture or at exsanguination) influenced absolute levels of all the measured blood components except total plasma protein.

Influence of prepartum exposure of beef heifers to winter weather on concentrations of plasma energy-yielding substrates, serum hormones and birth weight of calves

The influence of exposure to ambient winter weather conditions (WW) during the final 90 d of gestation on serum hormones, plasma substrates, and birth weight of calves was evaluated in spring-calving, primiparous beef heifers. At of 192+/-14 d of gestation, heifers were assigned by expected calving date, breed, and sire of fetus to one of two treatments. Thirteen heifers were assigned to thermoneutral environment (TN; 12 degrees C) and housed in temperature-controlled rooms. Heifers in WW (n=16) were maintained outdoors in drylots without access to shelter and given additional dietary energy when average weekly windchill fell below -6.7 degrees C. Body weights, hip-heights and samples of serum and plasma were obtained biweekly until heifers were relocated, approximately 7 d prior to expected calving. Polynomial response curves for concentrations of glucose and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) in plasma and cortisol in serum were not influenced by treatment. However, average concentrations of NEFA in plasma were increased (P<0.02) and glucose tended to be higher (P=0.13) in WW heifers compared to TN heifers (172.5+/-8.9 vs 136.9+/-7.7 micromol/L and 87.8+/-2.4 vs 83.3+/-2.7 mg/100ml for NEFA and glucose, respectively). Time trends of concentrations of estradiol in serum (P<0.01) and hip-height to weight ratios were different (P<0.05) for WW and TN. Birth weights of calves from TN heifers were greater (P<0.06) than calves from WW heifers (42.3+/-2.0 vs 36.9+/-1.8 kg), but average calving difficulty scores were similar for both heifer groups (3.2+/-0.5 vs 2.7+/-0.4). These data suggest that exposing spring-calving cows to reduced effective ambient temperatures during the final 90 d of pregnancy may elevate energy-yielding metabolites in plasma and alter endocrine function. These changes may contribute to reduced birth weight of calves.

The effects of cold exposure of pregnant sheep on foetal plasma nutrients, hormones and birth weight

1. Five pregnant sheep, with indwelling catheters positioned for withdrawal of maternal right-atrial and foetal arterial blood, were exposed for 2 h to neutral and to cold (-10 and wool-clipped) environmental temperatures. Acute maternal cold exposure increased the concentrations of glucose, glycerol and non-esterified fatty acids in maternal plasma and increased the concentration of glucose in foetal plasma, but not glycerol or non-esterified fatty acids. The concentration of corticosteroids in maternal plasma increased. The concentration of corticosteroids in foetal plasma did not change but the concentration of insulin increased. 2. Thirteen pregnant sheep were housed at thermoneutrality and thirteen similar sheep, fed the same amount of food, were clipped and exposed to cold during the last 5-6 weeks of pregnancy. Chronic maternal cold exposure increased the birth weight of both single and twin lambs. 3. It is concluded that exposure of pregnant sheep to cold can alter the partition of some nutrients between mother and foetus in favour of the foetus, and it is suggested how this may be brought about.
