Morphological and molecular characterization of Tarantobelus arachnicida gen. n., sp. n. (Nematoda, Rhabditida, Brevibuccidae), a parasitic nematode of tarantulas

First report of Tarantula-parasitic nematode Tarantobelus jeffdanielsi from Los Angeles, California

Tarantobelus jeffdanielsi is a recently described nematode parasite of tarantulas, originally isolated from a tarantula breeder in Virginia Beach, VA. We describe a new case of this parasite infecting tarantulas at a breeding facility in Los Angeles, California. Nematodes were isolated from the oral cavity of a captive bred Psalmophoeus iriminia commonly referred to as a Venezuelan sun tiger tarantula. rDNA sequencing was conducted to identify the species and generate a phylogeny tree.

What's in a name? Taxonomic and gender biases in the etymology of new species names

As our inventory of Earth's biodiversity progresses, the number of species given a Latin binomial name is also growing. While the coining of species names is bound by rules, the sources of inspiration used by taxonomists are an eclectic mix. We investigated naming trends for nearly 2900 new species of parasitic helminths described in the past two decades. Our analysis indicates that the likelihood of new species being given names that convey some information about them (name derived from morphology, host or locality of origin) or not (named after an eminent scientist, or for something else) depends on the higher taxonomic group to which the parasite or its host belongs. We also found a consistent gender bias among species named after eminent scientists, with male scientists being immortalized disproportionately more frequently than female scientists. Finally, we found that the tendency for taxonomists to name new species after a family member or close friend has increased over the past 20 years. We end by offering suggestions for future species naming, aimed at honouring the scientific community's diversity and avoiding etymological nepotism and cronyism, while still allowing for creativity in crafting new Latin species names.

Phylum Nematoda: a classification, catalogue and index of valid genera, with a census of valid species

A classification of the entire Phylum Nematoda is presented, based on current molecular, developmental and morphological evidence. The classification reflects the evolutionary relationships within the phylum, as well as significant areas of uncertainty, particularly related to the early evolution of nematodes.   It includes 3 classes, 8 subclasses, 12 superorders, 32 orders, 53 suborders, 101 superfamilies, 276 families, 511 subfamilies, 3030 genera, and 28537 species.   All valid species named from the time of publication of the previous classification and census (2010) to the end of 2019 are listed, along with the number of valid species in each genus.   Taxonomic authorities are provided for taxon names of all ranks.   The habitats where the species in each genus are found are listed, and an alphabetic index of genus names is provided.   The systematics of nematodes is reviewed, along with a history of nematode classification; evolutionary affinities and origins of nematodes; and the current diagnosis of the group.   Short overviews of the general biology, ecology, scientific and economic importance of the group are presented.  

TARANTOBELUS JEFFDANIELSI N. SP. (PANAGROLAIMOMORPHA; PANAGROLAIMIDAE), A NEMATODE PARASITE OF TARANTULAS

Multiple tarantula deaths for a wholesale breeder were reported in 2018. The breeder noticed white discharge in the oral cavities of the tarantulas. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the white discharge was a large group of nematodes intertwined inside the tarantula's oral cavity. We examined the nematodes and propose a new species, Tarantobelus jeffdanielsi n. sp., in the currently monotypic genus Tarantobelus based on a combination of morphological and morphometrical data and unique nuclear rDNA 28S and 18S sequences. Based on phylogenetic analyses, the previously described Tarantobelus arachnicida was relocated, along with T. jeffdanielsi, into the family Panagrolaimidae. We also provide evidence of the ability of T. jeffdanielsi to parasitize Galleria mellonella larvae and the tarantula Grammostola pulchra. The life span and fecundity of the new species were also assessed, resulting in an 11.2-d average life span, and a total fertility rate of 158 nematodes/adult.

Redescription and phylogenetic analysis of the type species of the genus Panagrellus Thorne, 1938 (Rhabditida, Panagrolaimidae), P. pycnus Thorne, 1938, including the first SEM study

The identity of Panagrellus pycnus, the type species of the genus Panagrellus, is discussed after studying specimens from a cultured population collected in Italy that fits the original material of the species. A new characterization is consequently provided as follows: body 0.93–1.32 mm long, lip region continuous with the adjoining body, stoma with gymnostom very reduced, pharynx with not swollen metacorpus, neck 161–203 µm long, excretory pore at level of the metacorpus, post-vulval uterine sac 99–162 µm long or 2.6–3.8 times as long as the body diameter divided in a short tubular proximal part and a long swollen distal part, vulva post-equatorial (V = 63–69), female tail conical elongate with acute terminus (133–170 µm, c = 6.8–8.1, c’ = 4.9–7.0), male tail conical elongate with acute terminus (104–137 µm, c = 7.8–10.9, c’ = 3.6–5.1), and spicules 70–81 µm long having angular hook-like and very curved ventrad lamina ending in a spatulate tip with a refringent forked axis. The evolutionary relationships of this species and the genus Panagrellus, as derived from the analyses of 18S and 28S rDNA fragments, are discussed. Additionally, the phylogenetic relationships among the members of the infraorder Panagrolaimomorpha is studied, being the genus Tarantobelus transferred to the family Panagrolaimidae and the new subfamily Tarantobelinae n. subfam. is proposed to accommodate it.

First Report of Matricidal Hatching in Bursaphelenchus xylophilus

The reproductive strategy of the pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is sexual amphimictic and oviparous. The incidence of intrauterine egg development and hatching in plant-parasitic nematodes is not a very common phenomenon. During the process of maintaining and breeding a B. xylophilus population isolated in Spain under laboratory conditions, evidence of matricidal hatching was observed. This is the first described case of this phenomenon in this species.
