Wildervanck's syndrome with severe inner ear dysplasia and agenesis of the right internal carotid artery

We describe a case with Wildervanck syndrome (cervico-oculo-acoustic syndrome) comprising Klippel-Feil anomaly, retractio bulbi (Duane syndrome), and congenital sensorineural deafness. An 18-month male baby had a severe inner ear dysplasia, and MRI also showed a complex vascular carotid malformation associated.

The otolaryngologist's role in management of hearing loss in infancy and childhood

This article reviews the role of the otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon-in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss in infants and young children. The otolaryngologist is well-versed in the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the auditory system, as well as the craniofacial syndromes that can involve the head and neck in combination with deafness. In this paper, the various causes of congenital hearing loss are described, as well as the steps required for proper diagnosis. Finally, surgeries used by otolaryngologists to treat childhood hearing loss, their indications, and outcomes, are discussed.

Audiological abnormalities in the Klippel-Feil syndrome

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is defined as a short neck with decreased movement and low posterior hairline. Radiologically, there is a failure of cervical segmentation. Deafness is a well known associated feature and may be of sensorineural, conductive, or mixed type. The audiological assessment of 44 patients with KFS is reported. Thirty five were found to have abnormalities on audiological testing. The presence of other features in these patients, reviews of data from other reports, and the need for further study are discussed.

Single gene influences on radiologically-detectable malformations of the inner ear

Inner ear malformations associated with hearing loss or vestibular dysfunction are discussed from the viewpoint of the etiologies of the malformation. Symptoms of classification of inner ear malformations are discussed. The significance of malformations of the cochlea and vestibular aqueduct to auditory function are discussed. Genetics features and characteristics of Branchio-oto-renal, Waardenburg's, Pendred's, DiGeorge's, Wildervanck, Fountain, and Treacher Collins syndromes are discussed in relation to ear abnormalities and hearing. Similar attention is given to genetic studies of nonsyndromic hearing loss.

Wildervanck syndrome

We report a case of the Wildervanck (cervico-oculo-acoustic) syndrome exhibiting Klippel-Feil anomaly, congenital sensorineural deafness and bilateral sixth nerve palsy. Associated anomalies included short stature, microcephaly, mental retardation, and cleft palate.
