Abstract
OBJECTIVE Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occur and share dysfunctions in affective and cognitive domains. As the neural substrates underlying their overlapping and dissociable symptomatology have not been well delineated, a meta-analysis of whole-brain voxel-based morphometry studies in PBD and ADHD was conducted. METHOD A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. The seed-based d mapping toolbox was used to identify altered clusters of PBD or ADHD and obtain their conjunctive and comparative abnormalities. Suprathreshold patterns were subjected to large-scale network analysis to identify affected brain networks. RESULTS The search revealed 10 PBD studies (268 patients) and 32 ADHD studies (1,333 patients). Decreased gray matter volumes in the right insula and anterior cingulate cortex relative to typically developing individuals were conjunctive in PBD and ADHD. Reduced volumes in the right inferior frontal gyrus, left orbitofrontal cortex, and hippocampus were more substantial in PBD, while decreased volumes in the left precentral gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus were more pronounced in ADHD. Neurodevelopmental effects modulated patterns of the left hippocampus in PBD and those of the left inferior frontal gyrus in ADHD. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that PBD and ADHD are characterized by both common and distinct patterns of gray matter volume alterations. Their overlapping abnormalities may represent a transdiagnostic problem of attention and emotion regulation shared by PBD and ADHD, whereas the disorder-differentiating substrates may contribute to the relative differences in cognitive and affective features that define the 2 disorders. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Pediatric bipolar disorder (BD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occur, with overlapping changes in emotional and cognitive functioning. This meta-analysis summarizes findings from 10 articles on BD and 32 articles on ADHD to identify similarities and differences in brain structure between youth with BD and youth with ADHD. The authors found that both disorders share decreased gray matter volumes in the right insula and anterior cingulate cortex, which play important roles in emotion processing and attention, respectively. Youth with BD had decreased gray matter volume in the right inferior frontal gyrus, left orbitofrontal gyrus, and left hippocampus, while youth with ADHD had decreased volumes in the left precentral gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus. Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a familial disorder with high heritability. Genetic factors have been linked to the pathogenesis of BD. Relatives of probands with BD who are at familial risk can exhibit brain abnormalities prior to illness onset. Given its involvement in prefrontal cognitive control and in frontolimbic circuitry that regulates emotional reactivity, the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) has been a focus of research in studies of BD-related pathology and BD-risk mechanism. In this review, we discuss multimodal neuroimaging findings of the IFG based on studies comparing at-risk relatives and low-risk controls. Review of these studies in at-risk cases suggests the presence of both risk and resilience markers related to the IFG. At-risk individuals exhibited larger gray matter volume and increased functional activities in IFG compared with low-risk controls, which might result from an adaptive brain compensation to support emotion regulation as an aspect of psychological resilience. Functional connectivity between IFG and downstream limbic or striatal areas was typically decreased in at-risk individuals relative to controls, which could contribute to risk-related problems of cognitive and emotional control. Large-scale and longitudinal investigations on at-risk individuals will further elucidate the role of IFG and other brain regions in relation to familial risk for BD, and together guide identification of at-risk individuals for primary prevention.

Abstract
Impaired emotional processing and cognitive functioning are common in schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar disorders, causing significant socioemotional disability. While a large body of research demonstrates abnormal cognition/emotion interactions in these disorders, previous studies investigating abnormalities in the emotional scene response using event-related potentials (ERPs) have yielded mixed findings, and few studies compare findings across psychiatric diagnoses. The current study investigates the effects of emotion and repetition on ERPs in a large, well-characterized sample of participants with schizophrenia-bipolar syndromes. Two ERP components that are modulated by emotional content and scene repetition, the early posterior negativity (EPN) and late positive potential (LPP), were recorded in healthy controls and participants with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder with psychosis, and bipolar disorder without psychosis. Effects of emotion and repetition were compared across groups. Results displayed significant but small effects in schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, with diminished EPN amplitudes to neutral and novel scenes, reduced LPP amplitudes to emotional scenes, and attenuated effects of scene repetition. Despite significant findings, small effect sizes indicate that emotional scene processing is predominantly intact in these disorders. Multivariate analyses indicate that these mild ERP abnormalities are related to cognition, psychosocial functioning, and psychosis severity. This relationship suggests that impaired cognition, rather than diagnosis or mood disturbance, may underlie disrupted neural scene processing in schizophrenia-bipolar syndromes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social cognition is impaired in patients with severe mental disorders. We aimed to investigate impairments in social cognition in youth with pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) through a systematic review of the literature and the meta-analysis. METHOD Following the PRISMA guidelines, we searched in PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL for studies reporting on the theory of mind (ToM) and emotion recognition (ER) abilities of patients with PBD compared to healthy controls (HC). We conducted a random-effects model meta-analysis for the contrast between PBD and HC. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were conducted for demographic and clinical variables as appropriate. RESULTS A total of thirteen studies involving 429 patients with PBD and 394 HC were included. Patients with PBD had significantly poorer social cognitive abilities (Hedges' g for ER, g = -0.74, CI = -0.91, -0.57; and for ToM, g = -0.98, CI = -1.41 to -0.55). Subgroup analysis also revealed significant impairment in ER for patients in a euthymic state (g = -0.75). Age, gender, sample size, the severity of mood symptoms, estimated IQ, the frequencies of bipolar-I disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, medications, study quality and euthymia did not moderate the difference in meta-regression. Heterogeneity was low in all analyses and there was no evidence for publication bias. CONCLUSION The results of this meta-analysis supported the notion that PBD is associated with a deficit in social cognitive abilities at a medium to a large level. Impairments in social cognition could be an illness-related trait of PBD. Meta-regression results did not find a moderator of the deficits in social cognition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emotion regulation is a relatively recent topic in psychiatry, and has only recently begun to be tested across Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (PBD). To date, no meta-analysis has investigated the presence of emotion regulation deficits in PBD patients. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to understand where the literature stands on this topic, as well as how different researchers are measuring and grasping the concept of emotion regulation in pediatric bipolar disorders. METHODS A systematic search of trials using the terms ("Pediatric Bipolar Disorder") AND ("Emotion Regulation" OR "Affect Regulation" OR "Mood Lability" OR "Mood Instability" OR "Irritability") was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Web of Science and Psych Info databases. Of the initial 366 articles identified, 8 met eligibility criteria for the meta-analysis and were included in this study. RESULTS There is a statistically significant difference in Accuracy in Emotion Regulation tasks, with a tendency for lower accuracy in PBD patients; however, both groups did not differ statistically regarding Response Time. CONCLUSION Our data suggests that PBD patients do present emotion regulation deficits, particularly regarding facial emotion recognition and affective language interference tasks mediated by cognitive assignments. These results have important implications in developing novel psychotherapeutic interventions for this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bipolar disorder (BD) commonly begins during adolescence and may continue into adulthood. Studies in adults with BD suggest that disruptions in amygdalar neural circuitry explain the pathophysiology underlying the disorder. Importantly, however, amygdala subregion networks have not yet been examined in youth close to mania onset. The goal of this study was to compare resting state functional connectivity patterns in amygdala subregions in youth with bipolar I disorder with patterns in healthy controls. METHOD Centromedial, laterobasal, and superficial amygdala subdivisions were assessed during rest and examined in relation to clinical measures of mania in youth (14-20 years old) with bipolar I disorder who experienced only a single episode of mania (BD; n = 20) and age-matched healthy comparison youth without any personal or family history of DSM-IV Axis I disorders (HC; n = 23). RESULTS Relative to HC youth, youth with BD exhibited decreased connectivity between the laterobasal subdivision of the amygdala and the hippocampus and precentral gyrus, and increased connectivity between the laterobasal subdivision and the precuneus. Connectivity between the right laterobasal amygdala and right hippocampus was positively correlated with levels of anxiety in BD but not in HC youth, and connectivity between the right laterobasal amygdala and right precuneus was negatively correlated with insight about bipolar illness. CONCLUSION Youth with BD have abnormal amygdala resting state network connections to regions that are critical for emotional processing and self-awareness. Longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether these aberrant patterns in youth with BD can be altered with intervention and can influence the course of disorder.

Abstract
Pediatric onset bipolar disorder (BD) is a challenging diagnosis with potentially debilitating outcomes. This review aims to critically evaluate recently published literature relevant to the diagnosis of BD in youth, emphasizing interesting and important new findings characterizing pediatric BD and reporting updates in the diagnostic and statistical manual relevant to this disorder in youth. Challenges regarding the diagnosis of BD will be discussed, in addition to important distinctions with other childhood disorders, including other bipolar spectrum disorders; major depressive disorder; dysthymia; disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD); attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other disruptive behavioral disorders; anxiety disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); psychotic disorders; autism spectrum disorders; substance use disorders; and borderline personality disorder. The review concludes with a comment on past research limitations and future directions in the field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) has emerged as a field of research in which neuropsychological studies are continuously providing new empirical findings. Despite this, a comprehensive framework for neurocognitive impairments is still lacking, and most of the evidence remains unconnected. We addressed this question through a systematic review of neuropsychological research, with the aim of elucidating the main issues concerning this topic. METHOD A comprehensive search of databases (PubMed, PsycINFO) was performed. Published manuscripts between 1990 and January 2014 were identified. Overall, 124 studies fulfilled inclusion criteria. Methodological differences between studies required a descriptive review of findings. RESULTS Evidence indicates that verbal/visual-spatial memory, processing speed, working memory, and social cognition are neurocognitive domains impaired in PBD youth. Furthermore, these deficits are greater among those who suffer acute affective symptoms, PBD type I, and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) comorbidity. In addition, several neurocognitive deficits imply certain changes in prefrontal cortex activity and are somewhat associated with psychosocial and academic disabilities. Strikingly, these deficits are consistently similar to those encountered in ADHD as well as severe mood dysregulation (SMD). Besides, some neurocognitive impairments appear before the onset of the illness and tend to maintain stable across adolescence. Finally, any therapy has not yet demonstrated to be effective on diminishing these neurocognitive impairments. LIMITATIONS More prolonged follow-up studies aimed at delineating the course of treatment and the response to it are warranted. CONCLUSIONS Despite noteworthy research on the neurocognitive profile of PBD, our knowledge is still lagging behind evidence from adult counterparts.
