Why do visual offsets reduce saccadic latencies?

Brain structures involved in visual search in the presence and absence of color singletons

It is still debated to what degree top-down and bottom-up driven attentional control processes are subserved by shared or by separate mechanisms. Interactions between these attentional control forms were investigated using a rapid event-related fMRI design, using an attentional search task. Following a prestimulus mask, target stimuli (consisting of a letter C or a mirror image of the C, enclosed in a diamond outline) were presented either at one unique location among three nontarget items (consisting of a random letter, enclosed in a circle outline; 50% probability), or at all four possible target locations (also 50% probability). On half the trials, irrelevant color singletons were presented, consisting of a color change of one of the four prestimulus masks, just prior to target appearance. Participants were required to search for a target letter inside the diamond and report its orientation. Results indicate that, in addition to a common network of parietal areas, medial frontal cortex is uniquely involved in top-down orienting, whereas bottom-up control is mainly subserved by a network of occipital and parietal areas. Additionally, we found that participants who were better able to suppress orienting to the color singleton showed middle frontal gyrus activation, and that the degree of top-down control correlated with insular activity. We conclude that, in addition to a common set of parietal areas, separate brain areas are involved in top-down and bottom-up driven attentional control, and that frontal areas play a role in the suppression of attentional capture by an irrelevant color singleton.

Crossmodal interaction in speeded responses: time window of integration model

Saccadic reaction time (SRT) to a visual stimulus tends to be faster when an auditory and/or somatosensory stimulus is presented in close temporal or spatial proximity, even when participants are instructed to ignore the accessory input (focused attention task). The time course of SRT as a function of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) is consistent with the time-window-of-integration (TWIN) model assuming a peripheral stage of parallel processing in separate sensory channels followed by a secondary stage of multisensory integration. TWIN has been shown to account for effects of the spatial configuration of the stimuli, for the effect of increasing the number of nontargets presented together with the target, for a possible warning effect of the nontarget, for effects of increasing the intensity of the nontarget, and for the effect of background noise on multisensory integration. Moreover, it has been able to accommodate some effects of aging on multisensory integration. There is empirical support for TWIN's tenet of the separability between spatial and temporal factors on multisensory integration. Besides presenting many features of TWIN within the context of crossmodal interaction modeling efforts, some possible directions on how the TWIN framework could serve to elucidate the link between perception and action are shown.

Crossmodal interaction in saccadic reaction time: separating multisensory from warning effects in the time window of integration model

In a focused attention task saccadic reaction time (SRT) to a visual target stimulus (LED) was measured with an auditory (white noise burst) or tactile (vibration applied to palm) non-target presented in ipsi- or contralateral position to the target. Crossmodal facilitation of SRT was observed under all configurations and stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) values ranging from -500 (non-target prior to target) to 0 ms, but the effect was larger for ipsi- than for contralateral presentation within an SOA range from -200 ms to 0. The time-window-of-integration (TWIN) model (Colonius and Diederich in J Cogn Neurosci 16:1000, 2004) is extended here to separate the effect of a spatially unspecific warning effect of the non-target from a spatially specific and genuine multisensory integration effect.

Attentional disengagement dysfunction following mTBI assessed with the gap saccade task

Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), leads to a number of cognitive, attentional, and sensorimotor deficits that can last a surprisingly long time after the initial injury. We have previously shown that the ability to orient visuospatial attention is deficient in participants with mTBI within 2 days of their injury, but then recovers to normal levels within a week. Orienting attention requires disengagement from the point of fixation, movement of attention to the location of interest, and re-engagement at that location. Deficits in any or all of these processes could lead to the difficulties with orienting attention that we have observed in mTBI. To address this issue, we tested participants with mTBI using a gap saccade task. Because this task manipulates the temporal gap between the offset of the fixation target and the appearance of the peripheral saccade target, it isolates the contribution of the disengagement process to saccadic reaction time. We found that participants with mTBI had significantly longer saccadic reaction times than controls when the temporal gap was short but not when it was long. This gap-dependent difference in saccadic reaction time was present within 2 days of the injury and resolved within 1 week. This pattern of results suggests that as the contribution of the disengagement process is reduced, so too is the extent of the reaction time deficit in the participants with mTBI. Taken together, this is consistent with the idea that the deficits in orienting visuospatial attention in participants with mTBI are fully accounted for by difficulties with the initial disengagement process.

Strategic modulation of the fixation-offset effect: dissociable effects of target probability on prosaccades and antisaccades

In several previous experiments examining the effects of participants' expectations on oculomotor performance, the manipulation of target probability has been confounded with factors such as target occurrence and saccade frequency. We report results from three experiments that manipulated target probability in isolation from systematic variations in such bottom-up factors. We present evidence for trial-by-trial, top-down modulation of the fixation-offset effect in prosaccade latency. Furthermore, fixation-stimulus offset and target-probability manipulations had additive effects on antisaccade latency, suggesting that these factors influence separable neural processes engaged for antisaccade performance. Based on these findings, we suggest that cognitive processes utilizing target-probability information influence task processes engaged for prosaccades that differ from those engaged for antisaccades.

Control of fixation and saccades in humans with chronic lesions of oculomotor cortex

To elucidate the dynamic interactions of cortical and subcortical oculomotor systems, the authors investigated reflexive and strategic control over fixation and saccades in patients with chronic unilateral lesions that involved either frontal or parietal cortex. They measured the effects of indicating the location of the forthcoming target and removing the fixation stimulus on the latencies of eye movements toward a peripheral visual target in 12 patients with frontal eye field (FEF) lesions, 9 patients with lesions restricted to parietal cortex, and 12 neurologically healthy controls. They found that chronic damage to FEF cortex disrupts cortico-collicular interactions, resulting in hypoactivity in the contralesional superior colliculus and a loss of strategic control over the intrinsic collicular circuits that regulate fixation.

Aging and the Strategic Control of the Fixation Offset Effect

A study was conducted to examine potential age-related differences in the strategic control of exogenous and endogenous saccades within the context of the fixation offset effect (FOE; i.e., faster saccades when a fixation point is removed than when it is left on throughout a trial). Subjects were instructed to make rapid saccades either on the basis of a suddenly appearing peripheral visual stimulus (exogenous saccade) or in response to a tone (endogenous saccade). On half of the trials the fixation point was removed simultaneously with the occurrence of the cue stimulus. Subjects' preparatory set was varied by manipulating the proportion of saccades generated to a visual and auditory stimulus within a trial block. Young and old adults both produced FOEs, and the FOEs were strategically modulated by preparatory set. The data are discussed in terms of aging and oculomotor control.

Differential cortical activation during voluntary and reflexive saccades in man

A saccade involves both a step in eye position and an obligatory shift in spatial attention. The traditional division of saccades into two types, the "reflexive" saccade made in response to an exogenous stimulus change in the visual periphery and the "voluntary" saccade based on an endogenous judgement to move gaze, is supported by lines of evidence which include the longer onset latency of the latter and the differential effects of lesions in humans and primates on each. It has been supposed that differences between the two types of saccade derive from differences in how the spatial attention shifts involved in each are processed. However, while functional imaging studies have affirmed the close link between saccades and attentional shifts by showing they activate overlapping cortical networks, attempts to contrast exogenous with endogenous ("covert") attentional shifts directly have not revealed separate patterns of cortical activation. We took the "overt" approach, contrasting whole reflexive and voluntary saccades using event-related fMRI. This demonstrated that, relative to reflexive saccades, voluntary saccades produced greater activation within the frontal eye fields and the saccade-related area of the intraparietal sulci. The reverse contrast showed reflexive saccades to be associated with relative activation of the angular gyrus of the inferior parietal lobule, strongest in the right hemisphere. The frequent involvement of the right inferior parietal lobule in lesions causing hemispatial neglect has long implicated this parietal region in an important, though as yet uncertain, role in the awareness and exploration of space. This is the first study to demonstrate preferential activation of an area in its posterior part, the right angular gyrus, during production of exogenously triggered rather than endogenously generated saccades, a finding which we propose is consistent with an important role for the angular gyrus in exogenous saccadic orienting.

Strategic control over saccadic eye movements: studies of the fixation offset effect

We studied the strategic (presumably cortical) control of ocular fixation in experiments that measured the fixation offset effect (FOE) while manipulating readiness to make reflexive or voluntary eye movements. The visual grasp reflex, which generates reflexive saccades to peripheral visual signals, reflects an opponent process in the superior colliculus (SC) between fixation cells at the rostral pole, whose activity helps maintain ocular position and increases when a stimulus is present at fixation, and movement cells, which generate saccades and are inhibited by rostral fixation neurons. Voluntary eye movements are controlled by movement and fixation cells in the frontal eye field (FEF). The FOE--a decrease in saccade latency when the fixation stimulus is extinguished--has been shown to reflect activity in the collicular eye movement circuitry and also to have an activity correlate in the FEF. Our manipulation of preparatory set to make reflexive or voluntary eye movements showed that when reflexive saccades were frequent and voluntary saccades were infrequent, the FOE was attenuated only for reflexive saccades. When voluntary saccades were frequent and reflexive saccades were infrequent, the FOE was attenuated only for voluntary saccades. We conclude that cortical processes related to task strategy are able to decrease fixation neuron activity even in the presence of a fixation stimulus, resulting in a smaller FOE. The dissociation in the effects of a fixation stimulus on reflexive and voluntary saccade latencies under the same strategic set suggests that the FOEs for these two types of eye movements may reflect a change in cellular activity in different neural structures, perhaps in the SC for reflexive saccades and in the FEF for voluntary saccades.

Against a role for attentional disengagement in the gap effect: a friendly amendment to Tam and Stelmach (1993)

Saccadic reaction time (RT) is reduced when the fixation point is removed shortly before target onset. Although Tam and Stelmach (1993) argued that this gap effect could not be explained solely by the idea that fixation offset disengaged visual attention and preferred an explanation based on disengagement of the oculomotor system, they felt that they could not rule out a hybrid model in which both oculomotor and attentional disengagement contribute to the gap effect. Our analysis of the dual response experiment (Experiment 4), upon which this hybrid model was based, shows that manual and saccadic responses were likely compromised by a grouping or delay strategy and that subjects may not have been attending as instructed. On these grounds, we argue that Tam and Stelmach (1993), like Kingstone and Klein (1990; 1993a) provide no evidence that attentional disengagement contributes to the gap effect. An alternative proposal (Klein & Kingstone, 1993), that motor preparation and oculomotor disengagement combine additively to produce the gap effect, is consistent with the data from Tam and Stelmach's Experiments 1-3, is similar to the explanation that they prefer, and has been strongly supported when directly tested (Kingstone, Klein, & Taylor, 1994).

Parallel and serial processes in the human oculomotor system: bimodal integration and express saccades

Saccadic reaction times (SRTs) were analyzed in the context of stochastic models of information processing (e.g., Townsend and Ashby 1983) to reveal the processing architecture(s) underlying integrative interactions between visual and auditory inputs and the mechanisms of express saccades. The results support the following conclusions. Bimodal (visual+auditory) targets are processed in parallel, and facilitate SRT to an extent that exceeds levels attainable by probability summation. This strongly implies neural summation between elements responding to spatially aligned visual and auditory inputs in the human oculomotor system. Second, express saccades are produced within a separable processing stage that is organized in series with that responsible for intersensory integration. A model is developed that implements this combination of parallel and serial processing. The activity in parallel input channels is summed within a sensory stage which is organized in series with a pre-motor and motor stage. The time course of each subprocess is considered a random variable, and different experimental manipulations can selectively influence different stages. Parallels between the model and physiological data are explored.
