Variations in the recruitment of syntactic knowledge contribute to SES differences in syntactic development

Children's syntactic parsing and sentence comprehension with a degraded auditory signal

During sentence comprehension, young children anticipate syntactic structures using early-arriving words and have difficulties revising incorrect predictions using late-arriving words. However, nearly all work to date has focused on syntactic parsing in idealized speech environments, and little is known about how children's strategies for predicting and revising meanings are affected by signal degradation. This study compares comprehension of active and passive sentences in natural and vocoded speech. In a word-interpretation task, 5-year-olds inferred the meanings of novel words in sentences that (1) encouraged agent-first predictions (e.g., The blicket is eating the seal implies The blicket is the agent), (2) required revising predictions (e.g., The blicket is eaten by the seal implies The blicket is the theme), or (3) weakened predictions by placing familiar nouns in sentence-initial position (e.g., The seal is eating/eaten by the blicket). When novel words promoted agent-first predictions, children misinterpreted passives as actives, and errors increased with vocoded compared to natural speech. However, when familiar words were sentence-initial that weakened agent-first predictions, children accurately interpreted passives, with no signal-degradation effects. This demonstrates that signal quality interacts with interpretive processes during sentence comprehension, and the impacts of speech degradation are greatest when late-arriving information conflicts with predictions.

The Relation Between Preschoolers' Vocabulary Development and Their Ability to Predict and Recognize Words

By age 2, children are developing foundational language processing skills, such as quickly recognizing words and predicting words before they occur. How do these skills relate to children's structural knowledge of vocabulary? Multiple aspects of language processing were simultaneously measured in a sample of 2-to-5-year-olds (N = 215): While older children were more fluent at recognizing words, at predicting words in a graded fashion, and at revising incorrect predictions, only revision was associated with concurrent vocabulary knowledge once age was accounted for. However, an exploratory longitudinal follow-up (N = 55) then found that word recognition and prediction skills were associated with rate of subsequent vocabulary development, but revision skills were not. We argue that prediction skills may facilitate language learning through enhancing processing speed.

Within and Across Language Predictors of Word Learning Processes in Dual Language Learners

This study investigated the relation between Dual Language Learners' (N = 90) vocabulary and grammar comprehension and word learning processes in preschool (aged 3-through-5 years). Of interest was whether: (a) performance in Spanish correlated with performance in English within each domain; and (b) comprehension predicted novel word learning within and across languages. Dual-language experience was evaluated as a potential moderator. Hierarchical linear modeling revealed stronger predictive associations within each language than across languages. Across languages, results varied by experience and domain. Structural sensitivity theory suggests exposure to two languages heightens awareness of parameters along which languages vary and provides a framework for interpreting complex associations within and across languages. Knowledge from one language may influence learning in both.

Developmental parsing and linguistic knowledge: Reexamining the role of cognitive control in the kindergarten path effect

During spoken language comprehension, young children have difficulties in revising incorrect predictions about the structural properties of sentences. Recent research on individual differences suggests that these errors may reflect immature cognitive control. However, this evidence overlooks challenges with interpreting cross-task correlations and additional effects of linguistic knowledge on developmental parsing. To account for within-individual variation in task performance, this study compared sentence comprehension across two samples: one where socioeconomic status (SES) background was related to global language knowledge (Diagnostic Evaluation of Language Variation-Screening Test; n = 60) and another where it was related to cognitive control abilities (Stroop task; n = 46). Children (3- to 6-year-olds) heard sentences with an agent-first bias (e.g., "The blicket will be quickly …") that predicted late-arriving verb morphology (e.g., actives: "… eating the seal") or conflicted with this cue (e.g., passives: "… eaten by the seal"). Consistent with prior work, final interpretations were less accurate when revision was needed for passives compared with actives. Critically, when SES was a proxy for global language variation, children from higher-SES backgrounds revised mispredictions more than their lower-SES peers on average. However, when SES tracked variation in cognitive control instead, SES effects on revision were absent. This suggests that variation in revising mispredictions during development may be related to linguistic knowledge rather than cognitive control. We discuss these results in light of known effects of linguistic knowledge on sentence comprehension and describe an information-theoretic account for why limited knowledge may lead children to favor predicted meanings over revised meanings during comprehension.

On the malleability of selective trust

Although much research has explored the cues that young children use to determine informant credibility, little research has examined whether credibility judgments can change over time as a function of children's language environment. This study explored whether changes in the syntactic complexity of adults' testimony shifts 4- and 5-year-old children's (N = 42) credibility and learning judgments. Children from lower-socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds were randomly assigned to hear a high proportion of complex language (the passive voice) or simpler language (the active voice) during 10 days of book-reading interactions with adult experimenters. Before and after the book-reading sessions, children's learning preferences for informants who used passive versus active voice were measured. Exposure to the complex passive voice led children to use syntactic complexity as a cue to make inferences about who to learn from, whereas active voice exposure resulted in no such shift. Implications for the role of the language environment in children's selective trust are discussed.
