Electrochemical fabrication of highly stable redox-active nanojunctions

Local cation-tuned reversible single-molecule switch in electric double layer

The nature of molecule-electrode interface is critical for the integration of atomically precise molecules as functional components into circuits. Herein, we demonstrate that the electric field localized metal cations in outer Helmholtz plane can modulate interfacial Au-carboxyl contacts, realizing a reversible single-molecule switch. STM break junction and I-V measurements show the electrochemical gating of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids have a conductance ON/OFF behavior in electrolyte solution containing metal cations (i.e., Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺), compared to almost no change in conductance without metal cations. In situ Raman spectra reveal strong molecular carboxyl-metal cation coordination at the negatively charged electrode surface, hindering the formation of molecular junctions for electron tunnelling. This work validates the critical role of localized cations in the electric double layer to regulate electron transport at the single-molecule level.

Preparations, Properties, and Applications of Polyaniline and Polyaniline Thin Films-A Review

Polyaniline (PANI) is a famous conductive polymer, and it has received tremendous consideration from researchers in the field of nanotechnology for the improvement of sensors, optoelectronic devices, and photonic devices. PANI is doped easily by different acids and dopants because of its easy synthesis and remarkable environmental stability. This review focuses on different preparation processes of PANI thin film by chemical and physical methods. Several features of PANI thin films, such as their magnetic, redox, and antioxidant, anti-corrosion, and electrical and sensing properties, are discussed in this review. PANI is a highly conductive polymer. Given its unique properties, easy synthesis, low cost, and high environmental stability in various applications such as electronics, drugs, and anti-corrosion materials, it has attracted extensive attention. The most important PANI applications are briefly reviewed at the end of this review.

Plasmon-Induced Conductance Switching of an Electroactive Conjugated Polymer Nanojunction

A plasmonic molecular electronic device, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires bridging an ultramicroelectrode and an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate covered by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), has been developed. Light irradiation of this device has a dramatic impact on its conductance. Polymer strands, maintained electrochemically in their oxidized, conducting state, reversibly switch to their insulating state upon irradiation by visible-wavelength light, resulting in a sharp decrease in the conductance. The high-conductance state is restored when the light is turned off. Switching depends on the wavelength and the intensity of the incident light. It is due to reversible reduction of the nanosized region of PEDOT nanowires in contact with a gold NP and is attributed to plasmon-induced hot-electron injection into the PEDOT. The high/low conductance ratio can be as great as 1000, and switching requires low light intensity (220 W/m²). These results could open the way to the design of a new family of optoelectronic switches.

Conductance modulation in tetraaniline monolayers by HCl-doping and by field-enhanced dissociation of H₂O

Oligoanilines are interesting candidates for organic electronics, as their conductivity can be varied by several orders of magnitude upon protonic doping. Here we demonstrate that tetraaniline self-assembled monolayers exhibit an unprecedented conductance on/off ratio of ∼710 (at +1 V) upon doping of the layers from the emeraldine base to the emeraldine salt form. Furthermore, a pronounced asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristics indicates dynamic doping of the tetraaniline layer by protons generated through field-enhanced dissociation of water molecules, a phenomenon known as the second Wien effect. These results point toward oligoanilines as promising substitutes for polyaniline layers in next-generation thin film devices.
