Colorimetric Method for Determining Pb2+ Ions in Water Enhanced with Non-Precious-Metal Nanoparticles

The Effect of Chitosan on the Chemical Structure, Morphology, and Selected Properties of Polyurethane/Chitosan Composites

Materials science is an interdisciplinary area of studies. This science focuses on the influence of the physico-chemical properties of materials on their application in human everyday lives. The materials’ synthesis should be developed in accordance with sustainable development. Polyurethanes (PUR) represent a significant consumption of plastic in the world. Modification of PUR, e.g., with polysaccharide of natural origin (chitosan, Chit), should have a positive effect on their functional properties and degradability in the natural environment. The basic parameters affecting the scope and direction of changes are the size and quantity of the chitosan particles. The impact assessment of chitosan on the chemical structure, morphology, thermal properties, crystallinity, mechanical properties, flammability, water sorption, adsorption properties, degradability, and biological activity of PUR/Chit composites (without other additives) is discussed in this article. To the best of our knowledge, recent literature does not contain a study discussing the direct impact of the presence of chitosan in the structure of PUR/Chit composite on its properties, regardless of the intended uses. This paper provides an overview of publications, which presents the results of a study on the effect of adding chitosan in polyurethane/chitosan composites without other additives on the properties of polyurethane.

Ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical aptasensor for lead ion detection based on sensitization effect of CdTe QDs on MoS2-CdS:Mn nanocomposites by the formation of G-quadruplex structure

An ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for lead ion (Pb²⁺) detection was fabricated based on MoS₂-CdS:Mn nanocomposites and sensitization effect of CdTe quantum dots (QDs). MoS₂-CdS:Mn modified electrode was used as the PEC matrix for the immobilization of probe DNA (pDNA) labeled with CdTe QDs. Target DNA (tDNA) were hybridized with pDNA to made the QDs locate away from the electrode surface by the rod-like double helix. The detection of Pb²⁺ was based on the conformational change of the pDNA to G-quadruplex structure in the presence of Pb²⁺, which made the labeled QDs move close to the electrode surface, leading to the generation of sensitization effect and evident increase of the photocurrent intensity. The linear range was 50 fM to 100 nM with a detection limit of 16.7 fM. The recoveries of the determination of Pb²⁺ in real samples were in the range of 102.5-108.0%. This proposed PEC aptasensor provides a new sensing strategy for various heavy metal ions at ultralow levels.

Evaluation of Inulin Replacing Chitosan in a Polyurethane/Polysaccharide Material for Pb2+ Removal

Downstream waste from industry and other industrial processes could increase concentration of heavy metals in water. These pollutants are commonly removed by adsorption because it is an effective and economical method. Previously, we reported adsorption capacity of a chitosan/polyurethane/titanium dioxide (TiO₂) composite for three ions in a dynamic wastewater system. There, increasing the chitosan concentration in composite increased the cation removal as well; however, for ratios higher than 50% of chitosan/TiO₂, the manufacturing cost increased significantly. In this work, we address the manufacturing cost problem by proposing a new formulation of the composite. Our hypothesis is that inulin could replace chitosan in the composite formulation, either wholly or in part. In this exploratory research, three blends were prepared with a polyurethane matrix using inulin or/and chitosan. Adsorption was evaluated using a colorimetric method and the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis curves were obtained to characterize blends. Results indicate that blends are suitable for toxic materials removal (specifically lead II, Pb²⁺). Material characterization indicates that polysaccharides were distributed in polyurethane’s external part, thus improving adsorption. Thermal degradation of materials was found above 200 °C. Comparing the blends data, inulin could replace chitosan in part and thereby improve the cost efficiency and scalability of the production process of the polyurethane based-adsorbent. Further research with different inulin/chitosan ratios in the adsorbent and experiments with a dynamic system are justified.

Carbon dots rooted agarose hydrogel hybrid platform for optical detection and separation of heavy metal ions

A robust solid sensing platform for an on-site operational and accurate detection of heavy metal is still a challenge. We introduce chitosan based carbon dots rooted agarose hydrogel film as a hybrid solid sensing platform for detection of heavy metal ions. The fabrication of the solid sensing platform is centered on simple electrostatic interaction between the NH3+ group present in the carbon dots and the OH- groups present in agarose. Simply on dipping the hydrogel film strip into the heavy metal ion solution, in particular Cr6+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Mn2+, the strip displays a color change, viz., Cr6+→yellow, Cu2+→blue, Fe3+→brown, Pb2+→white, Mn2+→tan brown. The optical detection limit of the respective metal ion is found to be 1 pM for Cr6+, 0.5 μM for Cu2+, and 0.5 nM for Fe3+, Pb2+, and Mn2+ by studying the changes in UV-visible reflectance spectrum of the hydrogel film. Moreover, the hydrogel film finds applicability as an efficient filtration membrane for separation of these quintet heavy metal ions. The strategic fundamental feature of this sensing platform is the successful capability of chitosan to form colored chelates with transition metals. This proficient hybrid hydrogel solid sensing platform is thus the most suitable to employ as an on-site operational, portable, cheap colorimetric-optical detector of heavy metal ion with potential skill in their separation. Details of the possible mechanistic insight into the colorimetric detection and ion separation are also discussed.

"Signal-on" photoelectrochemical sensing strategy based on target-dependent aptamer conformational conversion for selective detection of lead(II) ion

A "signal-on" photoelectrochemical sensing strategy for selective determination of Pb(2+) is designed on the basis of the combination of Pb(2+)-induced conformational conversion, the amplified effect of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and resonance energy transfer between CdS quantum dots (QDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The RGO/CdS/aptamer platform is constructed via a stepwise modification method, and characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In the absence of Pb(2+), the AuNP-labeled DNA, as a signal quenching element, can be introduced by hybridization with aptamer on the surface of sensing platform, which quenches the photocurrent of QDs via an energy transfer process. Upon addition of Pb(2+), the aptamer is induced into a G-quadruplex structure, which can greatly hinder the hybridization between aptamer and AuNP-labeled DNA due to the competitive occupation of binding sites and steric effect, leading to the recovery of photocurrent. Under optimized conditions, this "signal-on" photoelectrochemical biosensor shows a linear relationship between photocurrent variation and the logarithm of Pb(2+) concentration in the range of 0.1-50 nM with a detection limit of 0.05 nM. Meanwhile, it also exhibits good selectivity for Pb(2+) over other interfering ions, and is successfully applied to the detection of Pb(2+) in environmental water samples. By substituting the aptamers with other sequences, this proposed strategy could be conveniently extended to detect different targets as versatile photoelectrochemical devices.

Application of fluorescence spectroscopy using a novel fluoroionophore for quantification of zinc in urban runoff

Fluorescence spectroscopy has great potential for on-site and real-time monitoring of pollutants in aquatic environments; however, its application to environmental aquatic samples has been extremely limited. In this study, a novel fluoroionophore based on a BODIPY-terpyridine conjugate was developed and applied to determine Zn concentrations in urban runoff. The fluoroionophore selectively bound to Zn(2+) in water, which led to an instant red-shift of the fluorescence peak of the fluoroionophore from 539 nm to 567 nm that could be seen by the naked eye. Zn concentrations could be quantified using the ratio of fluorescence intensities, and the detection limit was 9 μg/L, which is sufficiently low for environmental aquatic samples. To demonstrate applicability of the method to environmental samples, we measured Zn concentrations in urban runoff samples with a complex matrix (∼60 mg/L dissolved organic carbon and ∼20 mS/cm electrical conductivity). The total and dissolved fractions of Zn in the samples could be determined by fluorescence spectroscopy and its relative error was estimated to be less than 30% by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy analysis. The proposed method is rapid and easy-to-use with simple pretreatment for Zn determination in environmental aquatic samples with complex matrices.
