Abstract
A series of nickel(II) monobenzochlorins (MBCs) and monobenzoporphyrins (MBPs) containing β-appended or meso,β-fused indanedione (IND) or malononitrile (MN) groups were synthesized and characterized for their physicochemical, electrochemical and anion sensing properties. Each investigated compound contained four meso-phenyl rings and a single β,β'-fused 4,5-di(methoxycarbonyl)benzene ring, with the chlorins represented as NiMBC(Y)2(R)4 and the porphyrins as NiMBP(YF)2, where Y is an indanedione (IND) or malononitrile (MN) group, R = H or Br and YF is a meso,β-fused IND or MN substituent. One of the investigated compounds, NiMBP(IND)2, was structurally characterized and shown to possess a ruffled macrocyclic conformation. The monobenzochlorins, NiMBC(IND)2, NiMBC(IND)2Br4 and NiMBC(MN)2, reversibly respond to basic anions such as CN-, F-, OAc- and H2PO4- through a visible color change assigned to the deprotonation of the vicinal proton on the appended IND or MN substituents. The malononitrile-fused NiII monobenzoporphyrin, NiMBP(MN)2, exhibited a selective but irreversible visual detection of cyanide ions (LOD = 2.23 ppm). This reaction afforded a tri-fused π-extended monobenzoporphyrin product represented as NiMBP(VCN)2 (where VCN = meso,β-fused vinyl cyanide) in non-aqueous media and proceeded via anion induced electron transfer (AIET). The in situ generated π-extended porphyrin was also isolated and characterized as to its physicochemical and electrochemical properties and found to possess a narrow electrochemical HOMO-LUMO gap of 1.46 V along with a near-IR (NIR) absorption band located at 861 nm.

Abstract
A low-cost on-paper sensor based on 5,10,15-tritolylcorrolatocobalt(III) triphenylphosphine, CoTTCorr(PPh3), was developed for cyanide detection in aqueous solutions. The sensor was coupled to a smartphone and used a home-written color intensity analysis software in order to record and interpret the colorimetric response. The detection of cyanide was possible down to 0.053 mg/L, an order of magnitude lower than the value of 0.5 mg/L set by the World Health Organization (WHO) for safe short-term exposure of cyanide in potable water. The colorimetric sensor had selectivity toward cyanide ions over the anions Cl-, Br, F-, NO2, SCN-, OA[Formula: see text]-,ClO4-, H2PO4- and HCO3- while the influence of NO3- ions on the sensor optical response towards cyanide was overcome by optimization of the ionophore/anion-exchanger ratio inside the sensing material. The best performance was obtained for the optode with an ionophore to exchanger ratio of 1:3. The optimized optodes were employed for quantification of cyanide content added to potable water and saliva.

Abstract
This critical review focuses on recent advances (2010-2015) in the detection of cyanide anion via metal-based optical chemosensors in which a change in colour and/or fluorescence intensity (or emission wavelength) of a molecular metal complex is determined by the direct interaction of the metal centre with this anion.

Abstract
Porphyrins and related macrocycles have been intensively exploited as sensing materials in chemical sensors, since in these devices they mimic most of their biological functions, such as reversible binding, catalytic activation, and optical changes. Such a magnificent bouquet of properties allows applying porphyrin derivatives to different transducers, ranging from nanogravimetric to optical devices, also enabling the realization of multifunctional chemical sensors, in which multiple transduction mechanisms are applied to the same sensing layer. Potential applications are further expanded through sensor arrays, where cross-selective sensing layers can be applied for the analysis of complex chemical matrices. The possibility of finely tuning the macrocycle properties by synthetic modification of the different components of the porphyrin ring, such as peripheral substituents, molecular skeleton, coordinated metal, allows creating a vast library of porphyrinoid-based sensing layers. From among these, one can select optimal arrays for a particular application. This feature is particularly suitable for sensor array applications, where cross-selective receptors are required. This Review briefly describes chemical sensor principles. The main part of the Review is divided into two sections, describing the porphyrin-based devices devoted to the detection of gaseous or liquid samples, according to the corresponding transduction mechanism. Although most devices are based on porphyrin derivatives, seminal examples of the application of corroles or other porphyrin analogues are evidenced in dedicated sections.

Abstract
Highly electron deficient β-substituted Ni(II) porphyrins (1-5) were synthesized and utilized as novel sensors for selective rapid visual detection of CN(-) ions. This article describes the single crystal X-ray structures, electronic spectral and electrochemical redox properties of these sensors. The ratiometric and colorimetric responses of these porphyrins were monitored by the change in optical absorption spectra. These sensors were found to be highly selective for cyanide ions with extremely high binding constants (10(16)-10(8) M(-2)) through axial ligation of CN(-) ions and are able to detect <0.11 ppm of CN(-) ions. 1-5 were recovered from 1-5·2CN(-) adducts by acid treatment and reused without loss of sensing ability. CN(-) binding strongly perturbs the redox properties of the parent porphyrin π-system. The applicability of 1-5 as practical visible colorimetric test kits for CN(-) ions in aqueous and non-aqueous media has also been explored. The mode of binding was confirmed by single crystal X-ray, spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations.

Abstract
A water-soluble fluorescent probe (C-GGH) was used for the highly sensitive and selective detection of cyanide (CN(-)) in aqueous media based on the displacement strategy. Due to the presence of the recognition unit GGH (Gly-Gly-His), the probe C-GGH can coordinate with Cu(2+) and consequently display ON-OFF type fluorescence response. Furthermore, the in situ formed nonfluorescent C-GGH-Cu(2+) complex can act as an effective OFF-ON type fluorescent probe for sensing CN(-) anion. Due to the strong binding affinity of CN(-) to Cu(2+), CN(-) can extract Cu(2+) from C-GGH-Cu(2+) complex, leading to the release of C-GGH and the recovery of fluorescent emission of the system. The probe C-GGH-Cu(2+) allowed detection of CN(-) in aqueous solution with a LOD (limit of detection) of 0.017 μmol/L which is much lower than the maximum contaminant level (1.9 μmol/L) for CN(-) in drinking water set by the WHO (World Health Organization). The probe also displayed excellent specificity for CN(-) towards other anions, including F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), SCN(-), PO4 (3-), N3 (-), NO3 (-), AcO(-), SO4 (2-), and CO3 (2-).

Abstract
Chemosensor (CS1) was designed and synthesized by simple green chemistry procedure. CS1 exhibited both colorimetric and fluorescence turn-off responses for cyanide (CN(-)) ion in aqueous solution. The probe showed an immediate visible color changes from yellow to colorless and green fluorescence disappearance when CN(-) was added. The mechanism of chemosensor reaction with CN(-) was studied using (1)HH NMR and (13)C NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry. Moreover, test strips based on the sensor were fabricated, which served as convenient and efficient CN(-) test kits.
