Ionic liquids in analytical chemistry: fundamentals, advances, and perspectives

Quantitative structure-retention relationships for pyridinium-based ionic liquids used as gas chromatographic stationary phases: convenient software and assessment of reliability of the results

Ionic liquids, i.e., organic salts with a low melting point, can be used as gas chromatographic liquid stationary phases. These stationary phases have some advantages such as peculiar selectivity, high polarity, and thermostability. Many previous works are devoted to such stationary phases. However, there are still no large enough retention data sets of structurally diverse compounds for them. Consequently, there are very few works devoted to quantitative structure-retention relationships (QSRR) for ionic liquid-based stationary phases. This work is aimed at closing this gap. Three ionic liquids with substituted pyridinium cations are considered. We provide large enough data sets (123-158 compounds) that can be used in further works devoted to QSRR and related methods. We provide a QSRR study using this data set and demonstrate the following. The retention index for a polyethylene glycol stationary phase (denoted as RI_PEG), predicted using another model, can be used as a molecular descriptor. This descriptor significantly improves the accuracy of the QSRR model. Both deep learning-based and linear models were considered for RI_PEG prediction. The ability to predict the retention indices for ionic liquid-based stationary phases with high accuracy is demonstrated. Particular attention is paid to the reproducibility and reliability of the QSRR study. It was demonstrated that adding/removing several compounds, small perturbations of the data set can considerably affect the results such as descriptor importance and model accuracy. These facts have to be considered in order to avoid misleading conclusions. For the QSRR research, we developed a software tool with a graphical user interface, which we called CHERESHNYA. It is intended to select molecular descriptors and construct linear equations connecting molecular descriptors with gas chromatographic retention indices for any stationary phase. The software allows the user to generate several hundred molecular descriptors (one-dimensional and two-dimensional). Among them, predicted retention indices for popular stationary phases such as polydimethylsiloxane and polyethylene glycol are used as molecular descriptors. Various methods for selecting (and assessing the importance of) molecular descriptors have been implemented, in particular the Boruta algorithm, partial least squares, genetic algorithms, L1-regularized regression (LASSO) and others. High-resolution performance of pillar[6]arene functionalized with imidazolium ionic liquids for gas chromatography

Pillar[n]arenes (P[n]A, n = 5-10) have attracted much attention because of their highly symmetric pillar-shaped architecture with π-electron rich cavity. Nevertheless, the use of ionic liquid functionalized P[n]A in chromatography has not been reported up to data. This work reports the investigation of the imidazolium ionic liquids functionalized pillar[6]arene (P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2]) as the stationary phase for gas chromatography (GC). The statically coated P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column (0.25 mm i.d.) showed moderate polarity and high column efficiency of 4733 plates/m determined by n-dodecane at 120 °C (k = 2.29). Owing to its unique amphiphilic conformation, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] showed good column inertness and resolving capability for a wide range of analytes and isomers. Particularly, the P6A-C10-IM-C8[NTf2] column exhibited distinctly advantageous performance for the challenging isomers of halogenated benzenes, benzaldehydes, phenols and anilines over the common commercial columns, namely 5% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-5) and 35% phenyl methyl polysiloxane (HP-35). In addition, it exhibited good column repeatability and reproducibility with RSD values on the retention times less than 0.05% for run-to-run, 0.38% for day-to-day and 2.94% for column-to-column, respectively. This work demonstrates the promising future of ionic liquid P[n]A stationary phases for chromatographic separations.

Simultaneous determination of multiple mycotoxins in corn and wheat by high efficiency extraction and purification based on polydopamine and ionic liquid bifunctional nanofiber mat

Due to the universality and harmfulness of mycotoxin co-contamination in cereals, it is of great significance to simultaneously monitor various mycotoxins co-polluted to ensure food safety and public health. In this work, a nanofiber mat modified by polydopamine and ionic liquid (PDA-IL-NFsM) was prepared and utilized as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the simultaneous quantitative detection of multiple mycotoxins in corn and wheat. The PDA-IL-NFsM can form multiple retention mechanisms with the targets through hydrogen bond, π-π interaction, electrostatic or hydrophobic interaction, it shows favorable simultaneous adsorption performance (adsorption efficiency mostly higher than 88.27%) for fifteen mycotoxins in seven classes. Moreover, it can significantly reduce the matrix effect (lower than -13.69%), showing a good purification effect on the sample matrix. Based on the superior performance of PDA-IL-NFsM, a simple sample preparation method was established. The sample extract is simply diluted with water for SPE, and the eluent can be directly collected for ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis. The detection limit can reach 0.04-4.21 μg kg^-1, the recovery was 80.09%-113.01%, and the relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day precision were 2.80%-14.81% and 0.68%-13.80% respectively. The results show that the proposed method has good sensitivity, accuracy and precision, and has practical application potential.

Structure-Property Relationships of CO2 Absorbing Core-Shell Microparticles with Encapsulated Ionic Liquid

The demand for new ionic liquid (IL)-based systems to selectively sequester carbon dioxide from gas mixtures has prompted the development of individual components involving the tailored design of IL themselves or solid-supported materials that provide excellent gas permeability of the overall material as well as the ability to incorporate large amounts of ionic liquid. In this work, novel IL-encapsulated microparticles comprising a cross-linked copolymer shell of β-myrcene and styrene and a hydrophilic core of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([EMIM][DCA]) are proposed as viable materials for CO2 capture. Water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion polymerization of different mass ratios of β-myrcene to styrene (i.e. 100/0, 70/30, 50/50, 0/100) yielded IL-encapsulated microparticles, where the encapsulation efficiency of [EMIM][DCA] was dependent on the copolymer shell composition. Thermal analysis using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that both thermal stability and glass transition temperatures depend on the mass ratio of β-myrcene to styrene. Images from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to observe the microparticle shell morphology as well as measure the particle size perimeter. Particle sizes were found to be between 5 and 44 μm. CO2 sorption experiments were conducted gravimetrically using TGA instrumentation. Interestingly, a trade-off between CO2 absorption capacity and ionic liquid encapsulation was observed. While increasing the β-myrcene content within the microparticle shell increases the amount of encapsulated [EMIM][DCA], the observed CO2 absorption capacity did not increase as expected due to reduced porosity compared to microparticles with higher styrene content in the microparticle shell. [EMIM][DCA] microcapsules with a 50/50 weight ratio of β-myrcene/styrene showed the best synergistic effect between spherical particle diameter (32.2 μm), pore size (0.75 μm), and high CO2 sorption capacity of ∼0.5 mmol CO2/g sample within a short absorption period of 20 min. Therefore, core-shell microcapsules composed of β-myrcene and styrene are envisioned as a promising material for CO2 sequestration applications.

Application of Recently used Green Solvents in Sample Preparation Techniques: A Comprehensive Review of Existing Trends, Challenges, and Future Opportunities

Green solvents (GSs) has gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential as safer and more sustainable alternatives to traditional organic solvents. Solvents are used in a wide range of applications, from industrial processes to everyday products. Solvent emissions and losses can have a significant impact on the environment and human health, which is why many initiatives are being undertaken to get rid of or switch to eco-friendly alternatives. A key area of green chemistry that led to the concept of "green" solvents is the development of alternative solvents that are less toxic and more environmentally friendly than traditional organic solvents. The advantages of using green solvents over conventional ones are their environmental friendliness, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and simplicity of preparation. Different sample preparation techniques have successfully utilized green solvents to offer a sustainable separation media for the extraction of a variety of inorganic and organic compounds which are crucial for research in environmental samples. Recent developments in green analytical chemistry (GAC) have focused on how to prepare and use samples using environmentally sustainable solvents. The current study covers the advance and currently used green solvents with an emphasis on environmentally friendly sample preparation methods. This review aims to briefly summarize the current state of knowledge about the use of green solvents particularly ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents and switchable solvents (SSs) with the perspective of GAC in sample preparation methods.

Long-term stable solid concentrated graphene dispersion assisted by a highly aromatic ionic liquid

HYPOTHESIS

The sonochemical exfoliation of graphite in solution has been demonstrated as a promising and easy technique for producing graphene dispersions. This is usually done in organic solvents and leads to unstable dispersions with very low graphene concentration. Ionic liquids (ILs) represent a versatile and safe alternative to traditional organic solvents. A few recent studies reported the use of commercial ILs with bulky anions, such as bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and aromatic cations, such as imidazolium, which favour the exfoliation of graphite through π-π and cation-π interactions. Although recently investigated, the role of aromatic groups on imidazolium cations is still controversial and systematic studies are still necessary. Besides, these studies were limited to liquid dispersions at room temperature.

EXPERIMENTS

Herein, we prepared four highly aromatic imidazolium-based ILs, including the newly reported 1-(naphthylmethyl)-3-benzylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [(Np)(Bn)im][NTf₂]. These ILs were used for the sonochemical exfoliation of graphite and compared with a commercial benchmark, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Bmim][NTf₂].

FINDINGS

Interestingly, [(Np)(Bn)im][NTf₂] allowed reaching solid dispersions at room temperature containing thin few layer graphene sheets with long-term stability (up to 2 years) and high concentration (3.6 mg/mL). Such graphene dispersion combines long-term stability in the solid-state and high processability in the liquid state, by a simple heating above 60 °C.

Dual colorimetric and near-infrared fluorescence probe for Hg2+ detection and cell imaging

Hg²⁺ in the environment endangers human health, and a convenient monitoring method is needed for the detection of Hg²⁺. In this study, we constructed a dual colorimetric near-infrared fluorescent probe (E)-2-(3-(3-(1,3-dithian-2-yl)-4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-en-1-ylidene)malononitrile (YF-Hg), based on the malononitrile isophorone. YF-Hg can detect Hg²⁺ rapidly and sensitively, with fluorescence emission in the near-infrared region (659 nm) with an obvious color change from violet to red in the visible light range. In addition, the low toxicity and large Stokes shift (191 nm) of YF-Hg also suggest that it is a potential tool for live-cell fluorescence imaging.

A Gadolinium-Based Magnetic Ionic Liquid for Dispersive Liquid–Liquid Microextraction of Ivermectin from Environmental Water

The recently introduced gadolinium-based magnetic ionic liquid (Gd-MIL) has been exploited as an extractant in dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) for preconcentration of ivermectin (IVR) from water samples followed by analysis using reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection at 245 nm. The utilized Gd-MIL extractant is hydrophobic with markedly high magnetic susceptibility. These features result in an efficient extraction of the lipophilic analyte and facilitate the phase separation under the influence of a strong magnetic field, thus promoting the method sensitivity and increasing the potential for automation. To maximize the IVR enrichment by DLLME, the procedure was optimized for extractant mass, dispersive solvent type/volume, salt addition and diluent pH. At optimized conditions, an enrichment factor approaching 70 was obtained with 4.0-mL sample sizes. The method was validated in terms of accuracy, precision, specificity and limit of quantitation. The method was successfully applied to the determination of IVR in river water samples with a mean relative recovery of 97.3% at a spiked concentration of 400 ng/mL. Compared with other reported methods, this approach used a simpler procedure with improved precision, lower amounts of safer solvents and a short analysis time.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted DLLME and SPME for the Determination of Contaminants in Food Samples

Developing effective and green methods for food analysis and separation has become an urgent issue regarding the ever-increasing concern of food quality and safety. Ionic liquids (ILs) are a new chemical medium and soft functional material developed under the framework of green chemistry and possess many unique properties, such as low melting points, low-to-negligible vapor pressures, excellent solubility, structural designability and high thermal stability. Combining ILs with extraction techniques not only takes advantage of ILs but also overcomes the disadvantages of traditional extraction methods. This subject has attracted intensive research efforts recently. Here, we present a brief review of the current research status and latest developments regarding the application of IL-assisted microextraction, including dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in food analysis and separation. The practical applications of ILs in determining toxic and harmful substances in food specimens with quite different natures are summarized and discussed. The critical function of ILs and the advantages of IL-based microextraction techniques over conventional extraction techniques are discussed in detail. Additionally, the recovery of ILs using different approaches is also presented to comply with green analytical chemistry requirements.

Biocompatible Cationic Lipoamino Acids as Counterions for Oral Administration of API-Ionic Liquids

Purpose

The use of ionic liquids (ILs) in drug delivery has focused attention on non-toxic IL counterions. Cationic lipids can be used to form ILs with weakly acidic drugs to enhance drug loading in lipid-based formulations (LBFs). However, cationic lipids are typically toxic. Here we explore the use of lipoaminoacids (LAAs) as cationic IL counterions that degrade or digest in vivo to non-toxic components.

Methods

LAAs were synthesised via esterification of amino acids with fatty alcohols to produce potentially digestible cationic LAAs. The LAAs were employed to form ILs with tolfenamic acid (Tol) and the Tol ILs loaded into LBF and examined in vitro and in vivo.

Results

Cationic LAAs complexed with Tol to generate lipophilic Tol ILs with high drug loading in LBFs. Assessment of the LAA under simulated digestion conditions revealed that they were susceptible to enzymatic degradation under intestinal conditions, forming biocompatible FAs and amino acids. In vitro dispersion and digestion studies of Tol ILs revealed that formulations containing digestible Tol ILs were able to maintain drug dispersion and solubilisation whilst the LAA were breaking down under digesting conditions. Finally, in vivo oral bioavailability studies demonstrated that oral delivery of a LBF containing a Tol IL comprising a digestible cationic lipid counterion was able to successfully support effective oral delivery of Tol.

Conclusions

Digestible LAA cationic lipids are potential IL counterions for weakly acidic drug molecules and digest in situ to form non-toxic breakdown products.

Synthesis and Characterization of Fluorinated Phosphonium Ionic Liquids to Use as New Engineering Solvents

In this work, a set of novel fluorinated ionic liquids (FILs), based on different tetra-alkyl-phosphonium cations with perfluorobutanesulfonate and perfluoropentanoate anions, were synthesized and characterized in order to check their suitability to apply as engineering solvents. Thermophysical and thermal properties were both determined between 293.15 and 353.15 K, and the molecular volumes and free volumes and the coefficients of isobaric thermal expansion were determined from experimental values of refractive index and density. Lastly, the Walden plot was used to evaluate the ionicity of the novel FILs. The cytotoxicity of these compounds was also determined using the human hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2) and the human colon carcinoma cells (Caco-2). Finally, the results were all discussed with the aim of understanding the behaviour of these compounds, considering the influence of the anion and the hydrogenated alkyl chain length. In summary, the new FILs synthesized in this work present adequate properties for their application in different industrial processes. Most of these compounds are liquid at room temperature with high decomposition temperatures. All phosphonium-based FILs have lower densities than conventional ionic liquids and common organic solvents, and the viscosity depends directly on the selected anion. Furthermore, the ionicity of FILs based on the sulfonate anion is higher than those based on the carboxylate anion. Finally, the phosphonium-based FILs have no significant effect on cellular viability at lower concentrations.

Comparison between Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics and OPLS-Based Force Fields for Ionic Liquid Solvent Organization

OPLS-based force fields (FFs) have been shown to provide accurate bulk-phase properties for a wide variety of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). However, the ability of OPLS to reproduce an IL solvent structure is not as well-validated given the relative lack of high-level theoretical or experimental data available for comparison. In this study, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were performed for three widely used ILs: the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation with chloride, tetrafluoroborate, or hexafluorophosphate anions, that is, [BMIM][Cl], [BMIM][BF₄], and [BMIM][PF₆], respectively, as a basis for further assessment of two unique IL FFs: the ±0.8 charge-scaled OPLS-2009IL FF and the OPLS-VSIL FF. The OPLS-2009IL FF employs a traditional all-atom functional form, whereas the OPLS-VSIL FF was developed using a virtual site that offloads negative charge to inside the plane of the ring with careful attention given to reproducing hydrogen bonding. Detailed comparisons between AIMD and the OPLS FFs were made based on radial distribution functions (RDFs), combined distribution functions (CDFs), and spatial distribution functions (SDFs) to examine cation-anion interactions and π⁺-π⁺ stacking between the imidazolium rings. While both FFs were able to correctly capture the general solvent structure of these popular ILs, the OPLS-VSIL FF quantitatively reproduced interaction distances more accurately. In addition, this work provides further insights into the different short- and long-range structure patterns of these popular ILs.

An Electrochemical Immunosensor Based on Gold-Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites with Ionic Liquid for Detecting the Breast Cancer CD44 Biomarker

We develop a highly sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of a cluster of differentiation-44 (CD44) antigen, a breast cancer biomarker. The hybrid nanocomposite consists of graphene oxide, ionic liquid, and gold nanoparticles (GO-IL-AuNPs) immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode. GO favors the immobilization of antibodies because of the availability of oxygen functionalities. However, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIM.BF₄) and AuNPs facilitate electron transfer and increase the effective surface area, which enhances the performance of the immunosensor. Furthermore, UV-visible, fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy characterization techniques have been employed to investigate the structural and chemical properties of the nanomaterials. The quantitative detection of CD44 antigen has been accomplished via differential pulse voltammetry and EIS detection techniques. It has been quantified that the proposed immunosensor offers excellent detection ability in both phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and serum samples. Under optimum conditions, the linear detection range of the immunosensor for CD44 antigen is 5.0 fg mL^-1 to 50.0 μg mL^-1 and the limit of detection is 2.0 and 1.90 fg mL^-1 as observed via DPV and EIS, respectively, in PBS. Additionally, the immunosensor has high sensitivity and specificity and can be successfully applied for the detection of CD44 antigen in clinical samples.

Plugged bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilica as a high-performance solid phase microextraction coating for improving extraction efficiency of chlorophenols in different matrices

In this study, a sensitive solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating was developed based on two kinds of plugged and non-plugged bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilicas (BFPMO) with ionic liquid and ethyl units. The extraction efficiency of all plugged and unplugged sorbents was investigated for the extraction of chlorophenols (CPs) in water and honey samples by emphasizing the effect of different physicochemical properties. The separation and determination of the CPs was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The extraction results showed that plugged BFPMO coating exhibited outstanding enrichment ability for the extraction of CPs as model analytes with different polarities. This can be attributed to a valuable hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance in the mesochanels of the plugged BFPMO, which is the result of the combination of plug technology and bridged organic groups. Low limits of detection in the range of 5-70 ng L^-1, wide linearity, and good reproducibility (RSD = 8.1-10.1 % for n = 6) under the optimized extraction conditions were achieved. Finally, the BFPMOs coated fiber was successfully used for determination of CPs in real water samples. The relative recoveries for the five CPs were in the range of 92.3-104.0 %, which proved the applicability of the method.

Emerging iongel materials towards applications in energy and bioelectronics

In the past two decades, ionic liquids (ILs) have blossomed as versatile task-specific materials with a unique combination of properties, which can be beneficial for a plethora of different applications. The additional need of incorporating ILs into solid devices led to the development of a new class of ionic soft-solid materials, named here iongels. Nowadays, iongels cover a wide range of materials mostly composed of an IL component immobilized within different matrices such as polymers, inorganic networks, biopolymers or inorganic nanoparticles. This review aims at presenting an integrated perspective on the recent progress and advances in this emerging type of material. We provide an analysis of the main families of iongels and highlight the emerging types of these ionic soft materials offering additional properties, such as thermoresponsiveness, self-healing, mixed ionic/electronic properties, and (photo)luminescence, among others. Next, recent trends in additive manufacturing (3D printing) of iongels are presented. Finally, their new applications in the areas of energy, gas separation and (bio)electronics are detailed and discussed in terms of performance, underpinning it to the structural features and processing of iongel materials.

Comparing the extraction performance of cyclodextrin-containing supramolecular deep eutectic solvents versus conventional deep eutectic solvents by headspace single drop microextraction

A headspace single drop microextraction (HS-SDME) method coupled with high performance liquid chromatography was developed to compare the extraction of eighteen aromatic organic pollutants from aqueous solutions using cyclodextrin-based supramolecular deep eutectic solvents (SUPRADESs) and alkylammonium halide-based conventional deep eutectic solvents (DESs). Different derivatives of beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) were employed as hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) in SUPRADESs and the extraction performance investigated. SUPRADES comprised of the 20 wt% native β-CD HBA provided the highest enrichment factors of analytes compared to SUPRADESs comprised of other derivatives of β-CD (random methylated β-cyclodextrin, heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin, and 2-hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin). In addition, native β-CD and its derivatives were dissolved in the neat DESs and their effect on the extraction of analytes examined. Dissolution of 20 wt% native β-CD in the choline chloride ([Ch⁺][Cl^-]):2Urea DES resulted in a significant increase in the extraction efficiencies of target analytes compared to the neat [Ch⁺][Cl^-]:2Urea DES. Under optimum conditions, the extraction method required a solvent microdroplet of 6.5 μL, 1000 rpm stir rate, 30% (w/v) salt concentration, and a temperature of 40 °C. The tetrabutylammonium chloride: 2 lactic acid DES resulted in the highest enrichment factors while the [Ch⁺][Cl^-]:2Urea DES had the lowest for most of the analytes among the evaluated solvents. The method provided limits of detection (LODs) down to 35 μg L^-1. Furthermore, the developed method was applied for the analysis of spiked tap and lake water, where relative recoveries ranging from 83.7% ̶ 119.7% and relative standard deviations lower than 19.2% were achieved.

Natural deep eutectic solvents as tailored and sustainable media for the extraction of five compounds from compound liquorice tablets and their comparison with conventional organic solvents

An efficient and environmentally friendly ultrasound-assisted (UAE) natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES) extraction method was applied for the extraction of five bioactive compounds (liquiritin, isoliquiritin, liquiritigenin, glycyrrhizic acid and isoliquiritigenin) from compound liquorice tablets (CPLTs), and the antioxidant activities of these compounds were evaluated. In this study, eighteen different NADES systems based on either two or three components were tested and a 1,4-butanediol–levulinic acid system (1 : 3 molar ratio) was selected as a topgallant solvent for maximizing analyte extraction yields. Various extraction parameters, such as water content, liquid/solid ratio, extraction time and temperature, were systematically optimized by single-factor and response surface methodology (RSM) experiments. The results indicated that the optimum extraction conditions for the analytes featured a water content of 17%, a liquid/solid ratio of 42 mL g⁻¹ and an extraction time of 30 min. The extracted amounts of liquiritin, isoliquiritin, liquiritigenin, glycyrrhizic acid and isoliquiritigenin reached 5.60, 3.17, 1.27, 74.62 and 1.34 mg g⁻¹, respectively, under optimized conditions, which were much higher than those extracted using conventional organic solvents. In addition, antioxidant tests revealed that the NADES extracts showed higher DPPH and hydroxyl radical-scavenging capacity than the conventional solvent extracts used for comparison. This study provides a suitable approach for efficiently extracting the bioactive compounds of CPLTs. Meanwhile, NADESs can be extended to other natural products as green extraction media.

A 1,4-butanediol–levulinic acid system was selected as a topgallant solvent and extraction parameters were optimized. NADES extracts exhibited higher extraction efficiency and in vitro antioxidant activities than conventional solvent extracts.

Functional Ionic Liquids Decorated Carbon Hybrid Nanomaterials for the Electrochemical Biosensors

Ionic liquids are gaining high attention due to their extremely unique physiochemical properties and are being utilized in numerous applications in the field of electrochemistry and bio-nanotechnology. The excellent ionic conductivity and the wide electrochemical window open a new avenue in the construction of electrochemical devices. On the other hand, carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene (GR), graphene oxide (GO), carbon dots (CDs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are highly utilized in electrochemical applications. Since they have a large surface area, high conductivity, stability, and functionality, they are promising in biosensor applications. Nevertheless, the combination of ionic liquids (ILs) and carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) results in the functional ILs-CNMs hybrid nanocomposites with considerably improved surface chemistry and electrochemical properties. Moreover, the high functionality and biocompatibility of ILs favor the high loading of biomolecules on the electrode surface. They extremely enhance the sensitivity of the biosensor that reaches the ability of ultra-low detection limit. This review aims to provide the studies of the synthesis, properties, and bonding of functional ILs-CNMs. Further, their electrochemical sensors and biosensor applications for the detection of numerous analytes are also discussed.

Advances Brought by Hydrophilic Ionic Liquids in Fields Involving Pharmaceuticals

The negligible volatility and high tunable nature of ionic liquids (ILs) have been the main drivers of their investigation in a wide diversity of fields, among which is their application in areas involving pharmaceuticals. Although most literature dealing with ILs is still majorly devoted to hydrophobic ILs, evidence on the potential of hydrophilic ILs have been increasingly provided in the past decade, viz., ILs with improved therapeutic efficiency and bioavailability, ILs with the ability to increase drugs' aqueous solubility, ILs with enhanced extraction performance for pharmaceuticals when employed in biphasic systems and other techniques, and ILs displaying low eco/cyto/toxicity and beneficial biological activities. Given their relevance, it is here overviewed the applications of hydrophilic ILs in fields involving pharmaceuticals, particularly focusing on achievements and advances witnessed during the last decade. The application of hydrophilic ILs within fields involving pharmaceuticals is here critically discussed according to four categories: (i) to improve pharmaceuticals solubility, envisioning improved bioavailability; (ii) as IL-based drug delivery systems; (iii) as pretreatment techniques to improve analytical methods performance dealing with pharmaceuticals, and (iv) in the recovery and purification of pharmaceuticals using IL-based systems. Key factors in the selection of appropriate ILs are identified. Insights and perspectives to bring renewed and effective solutions involving ILs able to compete with current commercial technologies are finally provided.

Profiling naphthenic acids in produced water using hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography coupled to Fourier transform Orbitrap mass spectrometry

In this study, we describe the development of an analytical method to profile naphthenic acids (NAs) from produced water (PW). The NAs were isolated by hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME). A microwave-assisted methylation method was used to convert the free acids into its corresponding naphthenic methyl esters (NAMEs). The best reaction conditions were ascertained using central composite design. The optimized sample preparation method exhibited an improved analytical eco-scale value (80 vs. 61) compared to conventional liquid-liquid extraction. Although the primary goal was qualitative analysis of NAMEs (e.g., group-type separation) in produced water, the quantitative performance was also evaluated for future investigations. The instrumental detection and quantification limits were 0.10 ng mL^-1 and 0.16 ng mL^-1, respectively, using full spectrum data acquisition. The accuracy and precision of the proposed method ranged from 90.4 to 96.6 % and 3.3 to 13.1 %, respectively, using matrix-matched working solutions (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 µg mL^-1). The monoisotopic masses of the adduct ions ([M+H]⁺) and its corresponding fine isotopic patterns were used to determine the elemental composition of the NAMEs in the PW samples. Qualitative analysis indicated the O₂ class as the predominant class in all samples with carbon numbers ranging from C₅ to C₁₉ and double bond equivalent (DBE) values of 1 to 8. Additional classes of polar compounds, i.e., O₃, O₄ and nitrogen-containing classes, are reported for the first time by gas chromatography coupled to Fourier transform Orbitrap mass spectrometry and chemical ionization.

Sugar-Based Ionic Liquids: Multifaceted Challenges and Intriguing Potential

Carbohydrates represent a promising option in transitioning from oil-based chemical resources to renewable ones, with the goal of developing chemistries for a sustainable future. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and largely available monosaccharides already provide useful chemical building blocks, so-called platform chemicals, such as levulinic acid and hydroxymethyl furfural, as well as solvents like cyrene or gamma-valerolactone. Therefore, there is great anticipation for novel applications involving materials and chemicals derived from sugars. In the field of ionic liquids (ILs), sugar-based ILs have been overlooked for a long time, mainly on account of their multistep demanding preparation. However, exploring new strategies for accessing sugar-based ILs, their study, and their exploitation, are attracting increasing interest. This is due to the growing concerns about the negative (eco)toxicity profile of most ILs in conjunction with their non-sustainable nature. In the present review, a literature survey concerning the development of sugar-based ILs since 2011 is presented. Their preparation strategies and thermal behavior analyses, sorted by sugar type, make up the first two sections with the intention to provide the reader with a useful guide. A final overview of the potential applications of sugar-based ILs and their future perspectives complement the present analysis.

Recent Progress in Ionic Liquid Extraction for the Separation of Rare Earth Elements

This review summarizes recent progress in solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) using an ionic liquid (IL) as the extraction solvent. These IL extraction systems are advantageous owing to the affinity of ILs for both charged and neutral hydrophobic species, in contrast to conventional organic solvent extraction systems. Herein, REE extraction studies using ILs are detailed and classified based on the type of extraction system, namely extraction using anionic ligands, extraction using neutral ligands, synergistic extraction, extraction without extractants, and a specific system using task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs). In IL extraction systems, the extracted complexes are often different from those in organic solvent systems, and the REE extraction and separation efficiencies are often significantly enhanced. Synergistic IL extraction is an effective approach to improving the extractability and separability of REEs. The development of novel TSILs suitable for IL extraction systems is also effective for REE separation.

Past, present, and future developments in enantioselective analysis using capillary electromigration techniques

Enantioseparation of chiral products has become increasingly important in a large diversity of academic and industrial applications. The separation of chiral compounds is inherently challenging and thus requires a suitable analytical technique that can achieve high resolution and sensitivity. In this context, CE has shown remarkable results so far. Chiral CE offers an orthogonal enantioselectivity and is typically considered less costly than chromatographic techniques, since only minute amounts of chiral selectors are needed. Several CE approaches have been developed for chiral analysis, including chiral EKC and chiral CEC. Enantioseparations by EKC benefit from the wide variety of possible pseudostationary phases that can be employed. Chiral CEC, on the other hand, combines chromatographic separation principles with the bulk fluid movement of CE, benefitting from reduced band broadening as compared to pressure-driven systems. Although UV detection is conventionally used for these approaches, MS can also be considered. CE-MS represents a promising alternative due to the increased sensitivity and selectivity, enabling the chiral analysis of complex samples. The potential contamination of the MS ion source in EKC-MS can be overcome using partial-filling and counter-migration techniques. However, chiral analysis using monolithic and open-tubular CEC-MS awaits additional method validation and a dedicated commercial interface. Further efforts in chiral CE are expected toward the improvement of existing techniques, the development of novel pseudostationary phases, and establishing the use of chiral ionic liquids, molecular imprinted polymers, and metal-organic frameworks. These developments will certainly foster the adoption of CE(-MS) as a well-established technique in routine chiral analysis.

Practical Considerations in Method Development for Gas Chromatography-Based Metabolomic Profiling

This chapter discusses the fundamentals of gas chromatography (GC) to improve method development for metabolic profiling of complex biological samples. The selection of column geometry and phase ratio impacts analyte mass transfer, which must be carefully optimized for fast analysis. Stationary phase selection is critical to obtain baseline resolution of critical pairs, but such selection must consider important aspects of metabolomic protocols, such as derivatization and dependence of analyte identification on existing databases. Sample preparation methods are also addressed depending on the sample matrix, including liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase microextraction.

Microalgae Biomolecules: Extraction, Separation and Purification Methods

Several microalgae species have been exploited due to their great biotechnological potential for the production of a range of biomolecules that can be applied in a large variety of industrial sectors. However, the major challenge of biotechnological processes is to make them economically viable, through the production of commercially valuable compounds. Most of these compounds are accumulated inside the cells, requiring efficient technologies for their extraction, recovery and purification. Recent improvements approaching physicochemical treatments (e.g., supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, pulsed electric fields, among others) and processes without solvents are seeking to establish sustainable and scalable technologies to obtain target products from microalgae with high efficiency and purity. This article reviews the currently available approaches reported in literature, highlighting some examples covering recent granted patents for the microalgae’s components extraction, recovery and purification, at small and large scales, in accordance with the worldwide trend of transition to bio-based products.

Growth of Multilayers of Ionic Liquids on Au(111) Investigated by Atomic Force Microscopy in Ultrahigh Vacuum

Understanding the growth of ultrathin films of ionic liquids (ILs) on metal surfaces is of highest relevance for a variety of applications. We present a detailed study of the growth of the wetting layer and successive multilayers of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([C1C1Im][Tf2N]) on Au(111). By atomic force microscopy (AFM) in ultrahigh vacuum, we follow the temperature-dependent behavior between 110 and 300 K at defined coverages. We initially observe the formation of a wetting layer with a thickness of ∼0.37 nm with anions and cations arranged in a checkerboard structure. Stable AFM imaging up to 280 K allows us to follow the IL growing on top of the wetting layer in bilayers with an average thickness of ∼0.71 nm, that is, double the height of the wetting layer, in a bilayer-by-bilayer fashion. This growth behavior is independently confirmed from the surface morphology, as deduced from AFM and angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. High-resolution AFM images at 110 K allow for identifying the molecular surface structure of the bilayers as a striped phase, which is one of the phases also seen for the wetting layer (Meusel, M.; Lexow, M.; Gezmis, A.; Schotz, S.; Wagner, M.; Bayer, A.; Maier, F.; Steinrück, H. A gadolinium-based magnetic ionic liquid for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction

A hydrophobic gadolinium-based magnetic ionic liquid (MIL) was investigated for the first time as an extraction solvent in dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME). The tested MIL was composed of trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium cations and paramagnetic gadolinium chloride anions. The prepared MIL showed low water miscibility, reasonable viscosity, markedly high magnetic susceptibility, adequate chemical stability, low UV background, and compatibility with reversed-phase HPLC solvents. These features resulted in a more efficient extraction than the corresponding iron or manganese analogues. Accordingly, the overall method sensitivity and reproducibility were improved, and the analysis time was reduced. The applicability of the proposed MIL was examined through the microextraction of four sartan antihypertensive drugs from aqueous samples followed by reversed-phase HPLC with UV detection at 240 nm. The DLLME procedures were optimized for disperser solvent type, MIL mass, disperser solvent volume, as well as acid, base, and salt addition. The limits of quantitation (LOQs) obtained with the analysis of 1.2-mL samples after DLLME and HPLC were 80, 30, 40, and 160 ng/mL for azilsartan medoxomil, irbesartan, telmisartan, and valsartan, respectively. Correlation coefficients were greater than 0.9988 and RSD values were in the range of 2.48–4.07%. Under the optimized microextraction conditions and using a 5-mL sample volume, enrichment factors were raised from about 40 for all sartans using a 1.2-mL sample to 175, 176, 169, and 103 for azilsartan medoxomil, irbesartan, valsartan, and telmisartan, respectively. The relative extraction recoveries for the studied sartans in river water varied from 82.5 to 101.48% at a spiked concentration of 0.5 μg/mL for telmisartan and irbesartan and 1 μg/mL for azilsartan medoxomil and valsartan.

Synthesis, structure and thermal properties of montmorillonite/ionic liquid ionogels

Sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) was synthesized as a result of two-stage processing of natural bentonite (Bent), and its particle-size distribution, structure and morphology were studied. It was found that the two-stage processing of the original clay resulted in a significant increase in the specific surface area (from 72 to 120 m² g^-1). The prepared Na-MMT powder was modified by two ionic liquids (ILs), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (EMImNTf₂) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMImNTf₂). Several methods, such as SEM, XRD, TG, DSC, FTIR spectroscopy were used to study the structure and thermal behavior of the produced ionogels. The effects of the IL cation on thermal characteristics of the Na-MMT/IL ionogels were studied. Using the DSC, characteristic temperatures of glass transition, crystallization and melting were determined for Na-MMT/IL composites. Taking into account the literature data and using the method of thermogravimetric analysis, it was shown that ionogel formation was accompanied by a decrease in the thermal stability of the IL.

The Current Role of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in the Sample Preparation Arena

Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

Atomic Force and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy of Ordered Ionic Liquid Wetting Layers from 110 K up to Room Temperature

Ionic liquids (ILs) are used as ultrathin films in many applications. We studied the nanoscale arrangement within the first layer of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([C₁C₁Im] [Tf₂N]) on Au(111) between 400 and 110 K in ultrahigh vacuum by scanning tunneling and noncontact atomic force microscopy with molecular resolution. Compared to earlier studies on similar ILs, a different behavior is observed, which we attribute to the small size and symmetrical shape of the cation: (a) In both AFM and STM only the anions are imaged; (b) only long-range-ordered but no amorphous phases are observed; (c) the hexagonal room-temperature phase melts 30-50 K above the IL's bulk melting point; (d) at 110 K, striped and hexagonal superstructures with two and three ion pairs per unit cell, respectively, are found. AFM turned out to be more stable at higher temperature, while STM revealed more details at low temperature.

Application of Deep Eutectic Solvents and Ionic Liquids in the Extraction of Catechins from Tea

This work aimed to comprehensively evaluate the potential and effectiveness of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) in the extraction of seven catechins from various tea samples. Different combinations of DES were used, consisting of Girard's reagent T (GrT) in various mixing ratios with organic acids and choline chloride. The yields of the DES extractions were compared with those from ionic liquids and conventional solvent. DES contained malic acid, as the hydrogen bond donors showed a good solubility of catechins with different polarities. In the second part of the study, a solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was applied to the extraction of catechins from tea infusions. The method was applied to the determination of selected catechins in tea leaves and tea infusions. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the proposed procedure works well in the simultaneous monitoring of these polyphenols, which makes it a useful tool in the quality control of tea.

Ordering and Nonideality of Air-Ionic Liquid Interfaces in Surface Second Harmonic Generation

The air-ionic liquid interface for a series of ionic liquids involving imidazolium cations [C_nmim] with different alkyl chain lengths (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12) and the same [NTf₂] imide anion has been studied by polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG). An increase as a function of the alkyl chain length of the orientational parameter reveals the increasing ordering of the air-pure ionic liquid interfaces although it is not possible to disentangle the change in mean tilt angle from a change in the tilt angle probability distribution width. Besides, the study of the air-mixed ([C₁₂mim])_x([C₂mim])_1-x[NTf₂] ionic liquid interface clearly demonstrates the interfacial nonideality of the mixed ionic liquids. The long alkyl chain cation perturbs the interface as seen from the orientational parameter and displaces the short alkyl chain one for bulk mixture contents as low as 10%. At higher long alkyl chain cation bulk mixture contents, the interface behaves close to a pure long alkyl chain ionic liquid.
