Two-Dimensional Biodegradable Black Phosphorus Nanosheets Promote Large Full-Thickness Wound Healing through In Situ Regeneration Therapy

Large full-thickness skin lesions have been one of the most challenging clinical problems in plastic surgery repair and reconstruction. To achieve in situ skin regeneration and perfect clinical outcomes, we must address two significant obstacles: angiogenesis deficiency and inflammatory dysfunction. Recently, black phosphorus has shown great promise in wound healing. However, few studies have explored the bio-effects of BP to promote in situ skin regeneration based on its nanoproperties. Here, to investigate whether black phosphorus nanosheets have positive bio-effects on in situ skin repair, we verified black phosphorus nanosheets' positive effects on angiogenic and anti-inflammatory abilities in vitro. Next, the in vivo evaluation performed on the rat large full-thickness excisional wound splinting model more comprehensively showed that the positive bio-effects of black phosphorus nanosheets are multilevel in wound healing, which can effectively enhance anti-inflammatory ability, angiogenesis, collagen deposition, and skin re-epithelialization. Then, multiomics analysis was performed to explore further the mechanism of black phosphorus nanosheets' regulation of endothelial cells in depth. Molecular mechanistically, black phosphorus nanosheets activated the JAK-STAT-OAS signaling pathway to promote cellular function and mitochondrial energy metabolism in endothelial cells. This study can provide a theoretical basis for applying two-dimensional black phosphorus nanosheets as nanomedicine to achieve in situ tissue regeneration in complex human pathological microenvironments, guiding the subsequent optimization of black phosphorus.

Template Stripping Method-Based Au Nanoarray for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Detection of Antiepileptic Drug

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a potential candidate for highly sensitive detection of target molecules. A SERS active substrate with a noble metal nanostructure is required for this. However, a SERS active substrate requires complicated fabrication procedures. This in turn makes it difficult to fabricate highly sensitive SERS active substrates with high reproducibility. To overcome this difficulty, a plasmonic crystal (PC) with periodic noble metal nanostructures was fabricated via the template-stripping method using a polymer-based template. Using SERS active substrates, SERS was successfully achieved using the PC by detecting low concentrations of phenobarbital which is an antiepileptic drug using a commercially available portable Raman module. The PC can be fabricated by demolding the deposited gold layer from a polymer-based template. This method is rapid, economic, and has high reproducibility. SERS can be achieved easily using this PC for a wide variety of applications such as medical, pharmaceutical, and environmental protection.

Fabrication of Photoluminescent Quantum Dot Thiol-yne Nanocomposites via Thermal Curing or Photopolymerization

Strong, flexible, and transparent materials have garnered tremendous interest in recent years as materials and electronics manufacturers pursue devices that are bright, flexible, durable, tailorable, and lightweight. Depending on the starting components, polymers fabricated using thiol-yne chemistry have been shown to be exceptionally strong and/or flexible, while also being amenable to modification by the incorporation of nanoparticles. In the present work, novel ligands were synthesized and used to functionalize quantum dots (QDs) of various diameters. The functionalized QDs were then incorporated into thiol-yne prepolymer matrices. These matrices were subsequently polymerized to form QD thiol-yne nanocomposite polymers. To demonstrate the versatility of the fabrication process, the prepolymers were either thermally cured or photopolymerized. The resulting transparent nanocomposites expressed the size-specific color of the QDs within them when exposed to ultraviolet irradiation, demonstrating that QDs can be incorporated into thiol-yne polymers without significantly altering QD expression. With the inclusion of QDs, thiol-yne nanocomposite polymers are promising candidates for use in numerous applications including as device display materials, optical lens materials, and/or sensor materials.

Polymer Nanocomposites via Click Chemistry Reactions

The emerging areas of polymer nanocomposites, as some are already in use in industrial applications and daily commodities, have the potential of offering new technologies with all manner of prominent capabilities. The incorporation of nanomaterials into polymeric matrix provides significant improvements, such as higher mechanical, thermal or electrical properties. In these materials, interface/interphase of components play a crucial role bringing additional features on the resulting nanocomposites. Among the various preparation strategies of such materials, an appealing strategy relies on the use of click chemistry concept as a multi-purpose toolbox for both fabrication and modulation of the material characteristics. This review aims to deliver new insights to the researchers of the field by noticing effective click chemistry-based methodologies on the preparation of polymer nanocomposites and their key applications such as optic, biomedical, coatings and sensor.

Nanoporous Gold Nanocomposites as a Versatile Platform for Plasmonic Engineering and Sensing

Plasmonic metal nanostructures have shown great potential in sensing applications. Among various materials and structures, monolithic nanoporous gold disks (NPGD) have several unique features such as three-dimensional (3D) porous network, large surface area, tunable plasmonic resonance, high-density hot-spots, and excellent architectural integrity and environmental stability. They exhibit a great potential in surface-enhanced spectroscopy, photothermal conversion, and plasmonic sensing. In this work, interactions between smaller colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNP) and individual NPGDs are studied. Specifically, colloidal gold nanoparticles with different sizes are loaded onto NPGD substrates to form NPG hybrid nanocomposites with tunable plasmonic resonance peaks in the near-infrared spectral range. Newly formed plasmonic hot-spots due to the coupling between individual nanoparticles and NPG disk have been identified in the nanocomposites, which have been experimentally studied using extinction and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Numerical modeling and simulations have been employed to further unravel various coupling scenarios between AuNP and NPGDs.

Sulfur and Its Role In Modern Materials Science

Although well-known and studied for centuries, sulfur continues to be at the center of an extensive array of scientific research topics. As one of the most abundant elements in the Universe, a major by-product of oil refinery processes, and as a common reaction site within biological systems, research involving sulfur is both broad in scope and incredibly important to our daily lives. Indeed, there has been renewed interest in sulfur-based reactions in just the past ten years. Sulfur research spans the spectrum of topics within the physical sciences including research on improving energy efficiency, environmentally friendly uses for oil refinery waste products, development of polymers with unique optical and mechanical properties, and materials produced for biological applications. This Review focuses on some of the latest exciting ways in which sulfur and sulfur-based reactions are being utilized to produce materials for application in energy, environmental, and other practical areas.
