Correlation between Plasmonic and Thermal Properties of Metallic Nanoparticles

Here, we investigate the correlation between the heat generated by gold nanoparticles, in particular nanospheres and nanobipyramids, and their plasmonic response manifested by the presence of Localized Surface Plasmon Resonances (LSPRs). Using a tunable laser and a thermal camera, we measure the temperature increase induced by colloidal nanoparticles in an aqueous solution as a function of the excitation wavelength in the optical regime. We demonstrate that the photothermal performances of the nanoparticles are strongly related not only to their plasmonic properties but also to the size and shape of the nanoparticles. The contribution of the longitudinal and transversal modes in gold nanobipyramids is also analyzed in terms of heat generation. These results will guide us to design appropriate nanoparticles to act as efficient heat nanosources.

Construction of nanoparticle-on-mirror nanocavities and their applications in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy

Plasmonic nanocavities exhibit exceptional capabilities in visualizing the internal structure of a single molecule at sub-nanometer resolution. Among these, an easily manufacturable nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) nanocavity is a successful and powerful platform for demonstrating various optical phenomena. Exciting advances in surface-enhanced spectroscopy using NPoM nanocavities have been developed and explored, including enhanced Raman, fluorescence, phosphorescence, upconversion, etc. This perspective emphasizes the construction of NPoM nanocavities and their applications in achieving higher enhancement capabilities or spatial resolution in dark-field scattering spectroscopy and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy. We describe a systematic framework that elucidates how to meet the requirements for studying light-matter interactions through the creation of well-designed NPoM nanocavities. Additionally, it provides an outlook on the challenges, future development directions, and practical applications in the field of plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

Simultaneous Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering with a Kerr Gate for Fluorescence Suppression

The combination of surface-enhanced and Kerr-gated Raman spectroscopy for the enhancement of the Raman signal and suppression of fluorescence is reported. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active gold substrates were demonstrated for the expansion of the surface generality of optical Kerr-gated Raman spectroscopy, broadening its applicability to the study of analytes that show a weak Raman signal in highly fluorescent media under (pre)resonant conditions. This approach is highlighted by the well-defined spectra of rhodamine 6G, Nile red, and Nile blue. The Raman spectra of fluorescent dyes were obtained only when SERS-active substrates were used in combination with the Kerr gate. To achieve enhancement of the weaker Raman scattering, Au films with different roughnesses or Au-core-shell-isolated nanoparticles (SHINs) were used. The use of SHINs enabled measurement of fluorescent dyes on non-SERS-active, optically flat Au, Cu, and Al substrates.

Advancing Evidence-Based Data Interpretation in UV-Vis and Fluorescence Analysis for Nanomaterials: An Analytical Chemistry Perspective

UV-vis spectrophotometry and spectrofluorometry are indispensable tools in education, research, and industrial process controls with widespread applications in nanoscience encompassing diverse nanomaterials and fields. Nevertheless, the prevailing spectroscopic interpretations and analyses often exhibit ambiguity and errors, particularly evident in the nanoscience literature. This analytical chemistry Perspective focuses on fostering evidence-based data interpretation in experimental studies of materials' UV-vis absorption, scattering, and fluorescence properties. We begin by outlining common issues observed in UV-vis and fluorescence analysis. Subsequently, we provide a summary of recent advances in commercial UV-vis spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric instruments, emphasizing their potential to enhance scientific rigor in UV-vis and fluorescence analysis. Furthermore, we propose potential avenues for future developments in spectroscopic instrumentation and measurement strategies, aiming to further augment the utility of optical spectroscopy in nano research for samples where optical complexity surpasses existing tools. Through a targeted focus on the critical issues related to UV-vis and fluorescence properties of nanomaterials, this Perspective can serve as a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and practitioners.

Coupling Au-loaded magnetic frameworks to photonic crystal for the improvement of photothermal heating effect in SERS

The combination of plasmonic metals and photonic crystal (PC) structure is considered to have potential for further enhancement of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect in comparison with conventional metal SERS substrates. Many studies have suggested that SERS signals probably suffer from an often-neglected effect of strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-induced photothermal heating during SERS detection. Herein, we have discovered that the photothermal heating problem arises in a traditional hybrid substrate that is prepared by doping plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) into the voids of an opal PC (Au-PC). This happens mainly because excess Au agglomerates formed by non-uniformly distributed Au NPs can cause a strong SPR effect under laser illumination. To fully address this issue, we have employed an improved hybrid substrate that is fabricated by substituting Au NPs in Au-PC with an Au-loaded magnetic framework (AuMF). The AuMF can effectively prevent the aggregation of Au NPs and ensure sufficient hot spots for SERS. This novel substrate prepared by doping AuMFs into a PC (AuMF-PC) was free of strong photothermal heating and showed high SERS intensity and reproducibility of the SERS signal compared with Au-PC. For practical applications, we have demonstrated AuMF-PC as an appropriate candidate for the SERS assay of the trace thiol pesticide thiram, and it enables recycling and reuse to achieve low cost.

Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle-Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence

Enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aims to promote higher sensitivity and obtain better detection limit. The core-shell nanostructures, owing to unique surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enabling distance-dependent strong localized electromagnetic field, have attracted rising attention in enhanced ECL research and application. However, the present structures usually with porous shell involve electrocatalytic activity from the metal core and adsorption effect from the shell, which interfere with practical SPR enhancement contribution to ECL signal. Herein, to exclude the interference and unveil exact SPR-enhanced effect, shell-isolated nanoparticles (SHINs) whose shell gets thicker and becomes pinhole-free are developed by modifying pH value and particles concentration. Furthermore, allowing for the distribution of hotspots and stronger enhancement, excitation intensity and ECL reaction layer thickness are mainly investigated, and several types of SHINs-enhanced ECL platforms are prepared to fabricate distinct hotspot distribution via electrostatic attraction (submonolayer) and a layer-by-layer deposition method (monolayer). Consequently, the strongest enhancement up to ≈250-fold is achieved by monolayer SHINs with 10 nm shell, and the platform is applied in a "turn-off" mode sensing for dopamine. The platform provides new guidelines to shell preparation, interface engineering and hotspots fabrication for superior ECL enhancement and analytical application with high performance.

Integrating-Sphere-Assisted Resonance Synchronous Spectroscopy for the Quantification of Material Double-Beam UV-Vis Absorption and Scattering Extinction

Integrating spheres (IS) have been used extensively for the characterization of light absorption in turbid samples. However, converting the IS-based sample absorption coefficient to the UV-vis absorbance quantified with a double-beam UV-vis spectrophotometer is challenging. Herein, we report an integrating-sphere-assisted resonance synchronous (ISARS) spectroscopy method performed with conventional spectrofluorometers equipped with an integrating-sphere accessory. Mathematical models and experimental procedures for quantifying the sample, solvent, and instrument-baseline ISARS intensity spectra were provided. A three-parameter analytical model has been developed for correlating the ISARS-based UV-vis absorbance and the absorbance measured with double-beam instruments. This ISARS method enables the quantitative separation of light absorption and scattering contribution to the sample UV-vis extinction spectrum measured with double-beam UV-vis spectrophotometers. Example applications of this ISARS technique are demonstrated with a series of representative samples differing significantly in their optical complexities, from approximately pure absorbers, pure scatterers, to simultaneous light absorbers, scatterers, and emitters under resonance excitation and detection conditions.

Antitumor Applications of Photothermal Agents and Photothermal Synergistic Therapies

As a new tumor treatment strategy, photothermal therapy (PTT) has the advantages of accuracy, ease of administration, a high efficiency and low side effects. Photothermal transduction agents (PTAs) are the key factor which play an important role in PTT. The mechanism of PTT is discussed in detail. The photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) can be improved by increasing the light absorption and reducing the light scattering of photothermal conversion agents. Additionally, non-radiative relaxation path attenuation can also promote energy conversion to obtain a higher value in terms of PCE. The structure and photothermal characteristics of various kinds of PTAs (metal materials, carbon-based nanomaterials, two-dimensional nanomaterials, and organic materials) were compared and analyzed. This paper reviews the antitumor applications of photothermal synergistic therapies, including PTT combined with immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and photodynamic therapy. This review proposes that these PTAs promote the development of photothermal synergistic therapies and have a great potential in the application of tumor treatment.

Mechanistic insight into deep holes from interband transitions in Palladium nanoparticle photocatalysts

Utilizing hot electrons generated from localized surface plasmon resonance is of widespread interest in the photocatalysis of metallic nanoparticles. However, hot holes, especially generated from interband transitions, have not been fully explored for photocatalysis yet. In this study, a photocatalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura reaction using mesoporous Pd nanoparticle photocatalyst served as a model to study the role of hot holes. Quantum yields of the photocatalysts increase under shorter wavelength excitations and correlate to “deeper” energy of the holes from the Fermi level. This work suggests that deeper holes in the d-band catalyze the oxidative addition of aryl halide R-X onto Pd⁰ at the nanoparticles' surface to form R-Pd^II-X complex, thus accelerating the rate-determining step of the catalytic cycle. The hot electrons do not play a decisive role. In the future, catalytic mechanisms induced by deep holes should deserve as much attention as the well-known hot electron transfer mechanism.

Metallic Plasmonic Array Structures: Principles, Fabrications, Properties, and Applications

The vast development of nanofabrication has spurred recent progress for the manipulation of light down to a region much smaller than the wavelength. Metallic plasmonic array structures are demonstrated to be the most powerful platform to realize controllable light-matter interactions and have found wide applications due to their rich and tunable optical performance through the morphology and parameter engineering. Here, various light-management mechanisms that may exist on metallic plasmonic array structures are described. Then, the typical techniques for fabrication of metallic plasmonic arrays are summarized. Next, some recent applications of plasmonic arrays are reviewed, including plasmonic sensing, surface-enhanced spectroscopies, plasmonic nanolasing, and perfect light absorption. Lastly, the existing challenges and perspectives for metallic plasmonic arrays are discussed. The aim is to provide guidance for future development of metallic plasmonic array structures.

Label-free detection of ssDNA base insertion and deletion mutations by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), as a label-free, highly sensitive analytical method, has become an important tool for providing substance fingerprints. In this study, silver nanoparticles containing thiosulfate ions and calcium ions (Ag@SCNPs) have been used as an enhanced substrate to eliminate the interference of impurities on DNA signals. Intrinsic structural information on single-strand DNA (ssDNA) was directly obtained through SERS. The improved enhancement system was used to explore the base-stacking rules of ssDNA in a solution environment. For the first time, single-base insertion mutations and deletion mutations, as well as their exact mutation sites, were identified, and Raman spectra with high stability, repeatability, and high signal-to-noise ratio were obtained. The method is simple, fast, and accurate, and the detection process is nondestructive. It has potential to be applied in the fields of medical diagnosis and genetics research.

Optothermal properties of plasmonic inorganic nanoparticles for photoacoustic applications

Plasmonic systems are becoming a favourable alternative to dye molecules in the generation of photoacoustic signals for spectroscopy and imaging. In particular, inorganic nanoparticles are appealing because of their versatility. In fact, as the shape, size and chemical composition of nanoparticles are directly correlated with their plasmonic properties, the excitation wavelength can be tuned to their plasmon resonance by adjusting such traits. This feature enables an extensive spectral range to be covered. In addition, surface chemical modifications can be performed to provide the nanoparticles with designed functionalities, e.g., selective affinity for specific macromolecules. The efficiency of the conversion of absorbed photon energy into heat, which is the physical basis of the photoacoustic signal, can be accurately determined by photoacoustic methods. This review contrasts studies that evaluate photoconversion in various kinds of nanomaterials by different methods, with the objective of facilitating the researchers' choice of suitable plasmonic nanoparticles for photoacoustic applications.

Systematic process evaluation of the conjugation of proteins to gold nanoparticles

The present work addresses some fundamental aspects in the preparation of protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles, in order to ensure an appropriate final product. Ten broadly available and/or easy to implement analytical tools were benchmarked and compared in their capacity to provide reliable and conclusive information for each step of the procedure. These techniques included transmission electron microscopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, colloidal stability titration, end-point colloidal stability analysis, cyclic voltammetry, agarose gel electrophoresis and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Four different proteins widely used as adaptors or blocking agents were tested, together with 13 nm gold nanoparticles containing different surface chemistries. Among all tested techniques, some of the least popular among nanomaterial scientists probed to be the most informative, including colloidal stability, gel electrophoresis and SEC; the latter being also an efficient purification procedure. These three techniques provide low-cost, low time consuming, sensitive and robust ways to assess the success of the nanoparticle bioconjugation steps, especially when used in adequate combinations.

Mie theory and the dichroic effect for spherical gold nanoparticles: an experimental approach

The attractive optical properties of metallic nanoparticles include the optically interesting but surprisingly not well understood dichroic effect, defined in this research as when particle colloids display different colours in transmitted and reflected light. Here we use a systematic experimental approach supplemented by theoretical Mie theory analysis to study the origin of this effect. The CloudSpec spectrophotometer has been utilised to produce quantitative scattering and absorption spectra for monodisperse spherical gold nanoparticles, allowing precise links to be made between the optical spectra and the colours observed. The source of the dichroic effect has been conclusively linked to particle size with no special particle shapes or size distributions required. These results experimentally demonstrate the relationship between particle size and the ratio of scattering to absorption predicted by Mie theory, which has important implications for users of Mie theory calculations.

Silver nanoparticles: Synthesis, investigation techniques, and properties

The unique silver properties, especially in the form of nanoparticles (NPs), allow to utilize them in numerous applications. For instance, Ag NPs can be utilized for the production of electronic and solar energy harvesting devices, in advanced analytical techniques (NALDI, SERS), catalysis and photocatalysis. Moreover, the Ag NPs can be useful in medicine for bioimaging, biosensing as well as in antibacterial and anticancer therapies. The Ag NPs utilization requires comprehensive knowledge about their features regarding the synthesis approaches as well as exploitation conditions. Unfortunately, a large number of scientific articles provide only restricted information according to the objects under investigation. Additionally, the results could be affected by artifacts introduced with exploited equipment, the utilized technique or sample preparation stages. However, it is rather difficult to get information about problems, which may occur during the studies. Thus, the review provides information about novel trends in the Ag NPs synthesis, among which the physical, chemical, and biological approaches can be found. Basic information about approaches for the control of critical parameters of NPs, i.e. size and shape, was also revealed. It was shown, that the reducing agent, stabilizer, the synthesis environment, including trace ions, have a direct impact on the Ag NPs properties. Further, the capabilities of modern analytical techniques for Ag NPs and nanocomposites investigations were shown, among other microscopic (optical, TEM, SEM, STEM, AFM), spectroscopic (UV-Vis, IR, Raman, NMR, electron spectroscopy, XRD), spectrometric (MALDI-TOF MS, SIMS, ICP-MS), and separation (CE, FFF, gel electrophoresis) techniques were described. The limitations and possible artifacts of the techniques were mentioned. A large number of presented techniques is a distinguishing feature, which makes the review different from others. Finally, the physicochemical and biological properties of Ag NPs were demonstrated. It was shown, that Ag NPs features are dependent on their basic parameters, such as size, shape, chemical composition, etc. At the end of the review, the modern theories of the Ag NPs toxic mechanism were shown in a way that has never been presented before. The review should be helpful for scientists in their own studies, as it can help to prepare experiments more carefully.

Virus-Sized Gold Nanorods: Plasmonic Particles for Biology

Plasmons, collective oscillations of conduction-band electrons in nanoscale metals, are well-known phenomena in colloidal gold and silver nanocrystals that produce brilliant visible colors in these materials that depend on the nanocrystal size and shape. Under illumination at or near the plasmon bands, gold and silver nanocrystals exhibit properties that enable fascinating biological applications: (i) the nanocrystals elastically scatter light, providing a straightforward way to image them in complex aqueous environments; (ii) the nanocrystals produce local electric fields that enable various surface-enhanced spectroscopies for sensing, molecular diagnostics, and boosting of bound fluorophore performance; (iii) the nanocrystals produce heat, which can lead to chemical transformations at or near the nanocrystal surface and can photothermally destroy nearby cells. While all the above-mentioned applications have already been well-demonstrated in the literature, this Account focuses on several other aspects of these nanomaterials, in particular gold nanorods that are approximately the size of viruses (diameters of ∼10 nm, lengths up to 100 nm). Absolute extinction, scattering, and absorption properties are compared for gold nanorods of various absolute dimensions, and references for how to synthesize gold nanorods with four different absolute dimensions are provided. Surface chemistry strategies for coating nanocrystals with smooth or rough shells are detailed; specific examples include mesoporous silica and metal-organic framework shells for porous (rough) coatings and polyelectrolyte layer-by-layer wrapping for "smooth" shells. For self-assembled-monolayer molecular coating ligands, the smoothest shells of all, a wide range of ligand densities have been reported from many experiments, yielding values from less than 1 to nearly 10 molecules/nm2 depending on the nanocrystal size and the nature of the ligand. Systematic studies of ligand density for one particular ligand with a bulky headgroup are highlighted, showing that the highest ligand density occurs for the smallest nanocrystals, even though these ligand headgroups are the most mobile as judged by NMR relaxation studies. Biomolecular coronas form around spherical and rod-shaped nanocrystals upon immersion into biological fluids; these proteins and lipids can be quantified, and their degree of adsorption depends on the nanocrystal surface chemistry as well as the biophysical characteristics of the adsorbing biomolecule. Photothermal adsorption and desorption of proteins on nanocrystals depend on the enthalpy of protein-nanocrystal surface interactions, leading to light-triggered alteration in protein concentrations near the nanocrystals. At the cellular scale, gold nanocrystals exert genetic changes at the mRNA level, with a variety of likely mechanisms that include alteration of local biomolecular concentration gradients, changes in mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix, and physical interruption of key cellular processes-even without plasmonic effects. Microbiomes, both organismal and environmental, are the likely first point of contact of nanomaterials with natural living systems; we see a major scientific frontier in understanding, predicting, and controlling microbe-nanocrystal interactions, which may be augmented by plasmonic effects.

Photothermal therapy and photoacoustic imaging via nanotheranostics in fighting cancer

The nonradiative conversion of light energy into heat (photothermal therapy, PTT) or sound energy (photoacoustic imaging, PAI) has been intensively investigated for the treatment and diagnosis of cancer, respectively. By taking advantage of nanocarriers, both imaging and therapeutic functions together with enhanced tumour accumulation have been thoroughly studied to improve the pre-clinical efficiency of PAI and PTT. In this review, we first summarize the development of inorganic and organic nano photothermal transduction agents (PTAs) and strategies for improving the PTT outcomes, including applying appropriate laser dosage, guiding the treatment via imaging techniques, developing PTAs with absorption in the second NIR window, increasing photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE), and also increasing the accumulation of PTAs in tumours. Second, we introduce the advantages of combining PTT with other therapies in cancer treatment. Third, the emerging applications of PAI in cancer-related research are exemplified. Finally, the perspectives and challenges of PTT and PAI for combating cancer, especially regarding their clinical translation, are discussed. We believe that PTT and PAI having noteworthy features would become promising next-generation non-invasive cancer theranostic techniques and improve our ability to combat cancers.

Surface Plasmon Resonances in Silver Nanostars

The recent development of silver nanostars (Ag-NSs) is promising for improved surface-enhanced sensing and spectroscopy, which may be further exploited if the mechanisms behind the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) are identified. Here, we show that LSPRs in Ag-NSs can be obtained with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations by considering the nanostars as combination of crossed nanorods (Ag-NRs). In particular, we demonstrate that an apparent tail at large wavelengths (λ≳700 nm) observed in the extinction spectra of Ag-NSs is due to a strong dipolar plasmon resonance, with no need to invoke heterogeneity (different number of arms) effects as is normally done in the literature. Our description also indicates a way to tune the strongest LSPR at desired wavelengths, which is useful for sensing applications.

Electrochromic-Tuned Plasmonics for Photothermal Sterile Window

Electrochromic materials are widely used in smart windows. An ideal future electrochromic window would be able to control visible light transmission, tune building's heat conversion of near-infrared (NIR) solar radiation, and reduce attacks by microorganisms. To date, most of the reports have primarily focused on visible-light transmission modulation using electrochromic materials. Herein, we report the fabrication of an electrochromic-photothermal film by integrating electrochromic WO₃ with plasmonic Au nanostructures and demonstrate its adjustability during optical transmission and photothermal conversion of visible and NIR lights. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au nanostructures and the broadband nonradiative plasmon decay are proposed to be tunable using both the electric field and the WO₃ substrate. Further enhanced photothermal conversion is achieved in colored state, which is attributed to coupling of traditional visible-band optical switching with NIR-LSPR extinction. The resulted electrochromic-photothermal film can also effectively reduce the numbers of attacking microorganisms, thus promising for use as a sterile smart window for advanced applications.

Kinetic Study on the Self-Assembly of Au(I)-Thiolate Lamellar Sheets: Preassembled Precursor vs Molecular Precursor

Molecular self-assembly has played an important role in nanofabrication. Due to the weak driving forces of noncovalent bonds, developing molecular nanoassemblies that have both robust preparation conditions and stable structure is a challenge. In our previous work, we have developed a reversible self-assembly system of Au(I)-thiolate coordination polymer (ATCP) to form colloidal lamellar sheets and demonstrated the high tailorability and stability of their structures, as well as their promising applications in gold nanocluster/nanoparticle fabrication and UV light shielding. Here, we first reported our progress in exploring a robust and green assembly protocol toward ATCP colloidal lamellar sheets in water by allowing the molecular precursors of HAuCl₄ and the thiol ligand to form ATCP preassembled intermediates. In this way, colloidal ATCP lamellar sheets can be prepared in a wide range of synthetic concentrations ([Au]₀ ≥ 2 × 10^-4 M) and at broad assembly temperatures (80-100 °C) with similar high yields (>80%). The assembly kinetics at different conditions are also studied in detail to help understand the robust assembly process. The robust and green synthetic protocols will pave a way for their real applications.

Silver nanowires as infrared-active materials for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is increasing in significance as a bioanalytical tool. Novel nanostructured metal substrates are required to improve performances and versatility of SERS spectroscopy. In particular, as biological tissues are relatively transparent in the infrared wavelength range, SERS-active materials suitable for infrared laser excitation are needed. Nanowires appear interesting in this respect as they show a very broad localized surface plasmon resonance band, ranging from near UV to near infrared wavelengths. The SERS activity of silver nanowires has been tested at three wavelengths and a fair enhancement at 1064 and 514 nm has been observed, whereas a very weak enhancement was present when exciting close to the nanowire extinction maximum. These experimentally measured optical properties have been contrasted with finite element method simulations. Furthermore, laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy measurements have shown that the extinction at 1064 nm is completely due to scattering. This result has an important implication that no heating occurs when silver nanowires are utilized as SERS-active substrates, thereby preventing possible thermal damage.

Facile synthesis of terminal-alkyne bioorthogonal molecules for live -cell surface-enhanced Raman scattering imaging through Au-core and silver/dopamine-shell nanotags

Alkyne is unique, specific and biocompatible in the Raman-silent region of the cell, but there still remains a challenge to achieve ultrasensitive detection in living systems due to its weak Raman scattering. Herein, a terminal alkyne ((E)-2-[4-(ethynylbenzylidene)amino]ethane-1-thiol (EBAE)) with surface-enhanced Raman scattering is synthesized. The EBAE molecule possesses S- and C-termini, which can be directly bonded to gold nanoparticles and dopamine/silver by forming the Au-S chemical bond and the carbon-metal bond, respectively. The distance between Raman reporter and AuNPs/AgNPs can be reduced, contributing to forming hot-spot-based SERS substrate. The alkyne functionalized nanoparticles are based on Au core and encapsulating polydopamine shell, defined as Au-core and dopamine/Ag-shell (ACDS). The bimetallic ACDS induce strong SERS signals for molecular imaging that arise from the strong electromagnetic field. Furthermore, the EBAE provides a distinct peak in the cellular Raman-silent region with nearly zero background interference. The EBAE Raman signals could be tremendously enhanced when the Raman reporter is located at the middle of the Au-core and dopamine/Ag-shell. Therefore, this work could have huge potential benefits for the highly sensitive detection of intercellular information delivery by connecting the recognition molecules in biomedical diagnostics.
