Development of an Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometric Method for Dimethylthallium Speciation and First Evidence of Its Existence in the Ocean

Thallium in aquatic environments and the factors controlling Tl behavior

Although thallium (Tl) usually exists in a very low level in the natural environment, it is highly toxic. With the development of mining and metallurgical industry and the wide application of Tl in the field of high technologies, Tl poses an increasing threat to the ecological environment and human health. This paper summarizes the research results of the toxicity of Tl as well as the distribution, occurrence forms, migration, and transformation mechanism of Tl in rivers, lakes, mining areas, estuaries, coastal waters, and oceans. It also discusses the influence mechanisms of pH, redox potential, suspended particulate matters, photochemical reaction, natural minerals, cation/anion, organic matters, and microorganisms on the environmental behavior of Tl. This paper points out the shortcomings of Tl research methods in water environment, and looks forward to the future development directions: First, the technology for separating Tl(III) and Tl(I) is still immature, especially it is difficult to effectively separate Tl(III) and Tl(I) in seawater. Second, the development of many advanced in situ detection technologies will bring great convenience to the studies of the dynamic mechanisms of Tl migration and transformation in the environments. Third, adsorption is the most effective mechanism to remove Tl from water, in which modified metal oxides or macrocyclic organic compounds have high application potential.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with a magnetic nanocomposite followed by electrothermal atomic absorption measurement for the speciation of thallium

A magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction procedure for the determination of the thallium content in waters is presented. The incorporation in the sample (10 mL) of a small amount of graphene-Fe₃O₄ composite (3.6 mg) in the presence of 10^-4 mol L^-1 Aliquat 336 at pH 2 results in the complete retention of both thallium(I) and thallium(III). After separation with a magnet, the micro-solid phase recovered is treated with 0.05 mL of a 0.1 mol L^-1 sodium ethylenediaminetetracetate solution at pH 9, and the supernatant obtained after application of the magnet is introduced in the electrothermal atomizer of an atomic absorption spectrometer to obtain the signal corresponding to the total thallium content. For speciation, the trivalent form in a second sample aliquot is separated by means of a liquid-liquid extraction stage with chloroform and methyl trioctyl ammonium in the presence of bromide, and the signal corresponding to the monovalent form is obtained, the concentration of thallium(III) being obtained by difference. The enrichment factor is 185, which permits a detection limit as low as 0.01 μg L^-1 of the analyte to be achieved. The relative standard deviation for five measurements at the 0.1 μg L^-1 thallium level is below 5%. The reliability of the procedure is verified by analysing five certified reference samples for which speciation data are also given.

Response of microbial communities and interactions to thallium in contaminated sediments near a pyrite mining area

Thallium (Tl) is a well-recognized hazardous heavy metal with very high toxicity. It is usually concentrated in sulfide minerals, such as pyrite (FeS₂), sphalerite (ZnS), chalcopyrite (CuS) and galena (PbS). Here, this study was carried out to investigate the indigenous microbial communities via 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis in typical surface sediments with various levels of Tl pollution (1.8-16.1 mg/kg) due to acid mine drainage from an active Tl-containing pyrite mining site in South China. It was found with more than 50 phyla from the domain Bacteria and 1 phyla from the domain Archaea. Sequences assigned to the genera Ferroplasma, Leptospirillum, Ferrovum, Metallibacterium, Acidithiobacillus, and Sulfuriferula manifested high relative abundances in all sequencing libraries from the relatively high Tl contamination. Canonical correspondence analysis further uncovered that the overall microbial community in this area was dominantly structured by the geochemical fractionation of Tl and geochemical parameters such as pH and Eh. Spearman's rank correlation analysis indicated a strong positive correlation between acidophilic Fe-metabolizing species and Tl_total, Tl_oxi, and Tl_res. The findings clarify potential roles of such phylotypes in the biogeochemical cycling of Tl, which may facilitate the development of in-situ bioremediation technology for Tl-contaminated sediments.

Direct speciation analysis of thallium based on solid phase extraction and specific retention of a Tl(III) complex on alumina coated with sodium dodecyl sulfate

Alumina (Al2O3) with an average particle size of 63 μm was modified with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and then applied to (i) solid phase extraction and separation of both thallium(I) and thallium(III), and (ii) preconcentration of Tl(III) from waste water samples. Only Tl(III), in the form of its complex with diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA), was retained on the sorbent, from where it can be eluted with 40 % nitric acid. Thallium species were then quantified by ICP MS. The method was characterized by a LOD of 25 pg of Tl(I) and 160 pg of Tl(III) in 10 mL samples. A large excesses of Tl(I) over Tl(III) was tolerated, and relatively high levels of other metal ions, such as a 500-fold excess of Pb(II) and Cd(II), and a 2000-fold excess of Zn(II), respectively, do not interfere. The sorbent was easily prepared and possesses a high loading capacity, and these properties make it an attractive material for rapid and efficient extraction and speciation of Tl. Self-made columns packed with alumina coated with SDS were used. The method is resistant to interferences from Pb, Cd, Zn and tolerates a large excess of Tl(I) over Tl(III).

Arsenic, Antimony, Chromium, and Thallium Speciation in Water and Sediment Samples with the LC-ICP-MS Technique

Chemical speciation is a very important subject in the environmental protection, toxicology, and chemical analytics due to the fact that toxicity, availability, and reactivity of trace elements depend on the chemical forms in which these elements occur. Research on low analyte levels, particularly in complex matrix samples, requires more and more advanced and sophisticated analytical methods and techniques. The latest trends in this field concern the so-called hyphenated techniques. Arsenic, antimony, chromium, and (underestimated) thallium attract the closest attention of toxicologists and analysts. The properties of those elements depend on the oxidation state in which they occur. The aim of the following paper is to answer the question why the speciation analytics is so important. The paper also provides numerous examples of the hyphenated technique usage (e.g., the LC-ICP-MS application in the speciation analysis of chromium, antimony, arsenic, or thallium in water and bottom sediment samples). An important issue addressed is the preparation of environmental samples for speciation analysis.

Genetic toxicology of thallium: a review

This review summarizes the current knowledge about the general toxicity of thallium (Tl) and its environmental sources, with special emphasis placed on its potential mutagenic, genotoxic, and cytotoxic effects on both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Tl is a nonessential heavy metal that poses environmental and occupational threats as well as therapeutic hazards because of its use in medicine. It is found in two oxidation states, thallous (Tl(+)) and thallic (Tl(3+)), both of which are considered highly toxic to human beings and domestic and wild organisms. Many Tl compounds are colorless, odorless and tasteless, and these characteristics, combined with the high toxicity of TI compounds, have led to their use as poisons. Because of its similarity to potassium ions (K(+)), plants and mammals readily absorb Tl(+) through the skin and digestive and respiratory systems. In mammals, it can cross the placental, hematoencephalic, and gonadal barriers. Inside cells, Tl can accumulate and interfere with the metabolism of potassium and other metal cations, mimicking or inhibiting their action. The effects of Tl on genetic material have not yet been thoroughly explored, and few existing studies have focused exclusively on Tl(+). Both in vivo and in vitro studies indicate that Tl compounds can have a weak mutagenic effect, but no definitive effect on the induction of primary DNA damage or chromosomal damage has been shown. These studies have demonstrated that Tl compounds are highly toxic and lead to changes in cell-cycle progression.

Application of hyphenated techniques in speciation analysis of arsenic, antimony, and thallium

Due to the fact that metals and metalloids have a strong impact on the environment, the methods of their determination and speciation have received special attention in recent years. Arsenic, antimony, and thallium are important examples of such toxic elements. Their speciation is especially important in the environmental and biomedical fields because of their toxicity, bioavailability, and reactivity. Recently, speciation analytics has been playing a unique role in the studies of biogeochemical cycles of chemical compounds, determination of toxicity and ecotoxicity of selected elements, quality control of food products, control of medicines and pharmaceutical products, technological process control, research on the impact of technological installation on the environment, examination of occupational exposure, and clinical analysis. Conventional methods are usually labor intensive, time consuming, and susceptible to interferences. The hyphenated techniques, in which separation method is coupled with multidimensional detectors, have become useful alternatives. The main advantages of those techniques consist in extremely low detection and quantification limits, insignificant interference, influence as well as high precision and repeatability of the determinations. In view of their importance, the present work overviews and discusses different hyphenated techniques used for arsenic, antimony, and thallium species analysis, in different clinical, environmental and food matrices.

Oxidation of thallium by freshwater plankton communities

Thallium is a toxic metal that is of emerlI(I) or Tl(III), and its oxidation state affects its complexation and subsequent bioavailability and toxicity. We conducted lab and field incubations with 204Tl(I) and natural plankton assemblages to study the occurrence and mechanism of Tl oxidation. We observed that Tl(III) comprised 74% of total dissolved Tl after a 60 h incubation in surface waters from Lake Ontario, revealing a maximum specific oxidation rate of 0.014 h(-1). No Tl(I) oxidation was observed in sterile-filtered control treatments, indicating that solar radiation alone does not oxidize Tl(I) to Tl(III). Additional incubations with pond water revealed that Tl(I) oxidation is mediated by microbial activity and is not related to the presence of abiotic particles or phytoplankton or protozoa. We also identified a minor fraction (5-13%) of nonion-exchangeable (Chelex-100 resin; pH 1.5) Tl that may represent dimethylthallium or complexed thallium. This study demonstrates that planktonic bacteria are responsible for oxidizing the thermodynamically stable Tl(I) to the more abundant Tl(III).

Detection of volatile organometal chloride species in model atmosphere above seawater and sediment

The principal route for release of organometallic species into the atmosphere is currently considered to be the biological or chemical formation of saturated volatile compounds such as dimethylmercury, metal hydrides, etc. Model experiments conducted in our laboratory pointto the release of extremely toxic, volatile organotin, -lead, -mercury, and -arsenic species that have been detected as the chlorides in the gas phase above seawater and sediment mixtures. As the sediment was sterilized prior to the analytical study, any bioformation of volatile metal species was excluded. The most probable account of these observations is the naturally occurring formation of metal chlorides, fueled by the abundance of chloride ion (or other halides) present in seawater and many other natural environments. This raises the suggestion that the release of toxic trace elements to the atmosphere by environmental processes may be seriously underestimated. A conservative projection, based on laboratory data, suggests that the emission of butyltin into the atmosphere may reach as high as 150 ng/m2 of water/yr from a polluted marine environment, suggesting a very significant level of release of butyltin from seawater at the global level. For the sampling and determination of volatile metal species, solid-phase microextraction combined with inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry has been used. This new analytical system is capable of detection of semivolatile, thermally unstable compounds such as the class encompassing metal halide species.
