Bimetallics in a Nutshell: Complexes Supported by Chelating Naphthyridine-Based Ligands

Diborane Reductions of CO2 and CS2 Mediated by Dicopper μ-Boryl Complexes of a Robust Bis(phosphino)-1,8-naphthyridine Ligand

A dinucleating 1,8-naphthyridine ligand featuring fluorene-9,9-diyl-linked phosphino side arms (PNNPFlu) was synthesized and used to obtain the cationic dicopper complexes 2, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ-Ph)][NTf2]; [NTf2] = bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide, 6, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ-CCPh)][NTf2], and 3, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ-OtBu)][NTf2]. Complex 3 reacted with diboranes to afford dicopper μ-boryl species (4, with μ-Bcat; cat = catecholate and 5, with μ-Bpin; pin = pinacolate) that are more reactive in C(sp)-H bond activations and toward activations of CO2 and CS2, compared to dicopper μ-boryl complexes supported by a 1,8-naphthyridine-based ligand with di(pyridyl) side arms. The solid-state structures and DFT analysis indicate that the higher reactivities of 4 and 5 relate to changes in the coordination sphere of copper, rather than to perturbations on the Cu-B bonding interactions. Addition of xylyl isocyanide (CNXyl) to 4 gave 7, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ-Bcat)(CNXyl)][NTf2], demonstrating that the lower coordination number at copper is chemically significant. Reactions of 4 and 5 with CO2 yielded the corresponding dicopper borate complexes (8, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ-OBcat)][NTf2]; 9, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ-OBpin)][NTf2]), with 4 demonstrating catalytic reduction in the presence of excess diborane. Related reactions of 4 and 5 with CS2 provided insertion products 10, {[(PNNPFlu)Cu2]2[μ-S2C(Bcat)2]}[NTf2]2, and 11, [(PNNPFlu)Cu2(μ,κ2-S2CBpin)][NTf2], respectively. These products feature Cu-S-C-B linkages analogous to those of proposed CO2 insertion intermediate.

Coplanar binuclear group 4 post-metallocene complexes supported by chelating μ-(σ2-aryl) ligands: characterisation and olefin polymerisation catalysis

The report concerns expansion of the previously developed M-[O,N,C] [pyridine-2-phenolate-6-(σ-aryl)] catalyst system into rigid, coplanar bimetallic assemblies, which afford metal-metal distances that are predetermined yet amenable for cooperativity, as well as locked-in "syn" orientation of binding sites that offer the same direction of access for substrates. The binuclear complexes are generated in a regioselective manner to yield para hydrogen atoms (not ortho) at the central μ-aryl moiety, and have been characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. The "anti" (showing opposite directions of access) and mononuclear analogues have also been prepared for comparison purposes. Six syn-type bimetallic derivatives of Ti, Zr and Hf have been characterised by X-ray crystallography, to reveal metal-metal separations of 6.3-6.7 Å. For ethylene and ethylene/1-octene polymerisation reactions in conjunction with trityl borate, the syn-Ti2 catalysts display superior efficiencies and produced polymers with higher Mw values than for the anti and mono-Ti congeners, thus indicating the possibility of favourable enchainment interactions and cooperative reactivity.

Tetracopper σ-Bound μ-Acetylide and -Diyne Units Stabilized by a Naphthyridine-based Dinucleating Ligand

Reactions of a dicopper(I) tert-butoxide complex with alkynes possessing boryl or silyl capping groups resulted in formation of unprecedented tetracopper(I) μ-acetylide/diyne complexes that were characterized by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These compounds possess an unusual μ4 -η1 :η1 :η1 :η1 coordination mode for the bridging organic fragment, enforced by the rigid and dinucleating nature of the ligand utilized. Thus, the central π system remains unperturbed and accessible for subsequent reactivity and modification. This has been corroborated by addition of a fifth copper atom, giving rise to a pentacopper acetylide complex. This work may provide a new approach by which metal-metal cooperativity can be exploited in the transformation of acetylide and diyne groups to a variety of substrates, or as a starting point for the controlled synthesis of copper(I) alkyne-containing clusters.

Binuclear Complexes Supported by a Tetrapyridyl Ligand with a Bending Anthraquinodimethane Linker

A tetrapyridyl ligand with a bending anthraquinodimethane linker has been synthesized, and its complexation with coinage metals has been examined. The treatment of the ligand with Ag(I) and Au(I) cations afforded binuclear complexes, wherein the two metal centers were in close proximity to the inside space of the ligand. X-ray analyses corroborated with theoretical calculations indicated that the ligand has reasonable flexibility toward a bending deformation of the linker moiety to provide a ligand pocket suitable for the proximal binuclear complexes, even though such deformations accompany a non-negligible amount of energetic cost. On the other hand, treatment with 2 equiv of Cu(I) salt afforded a binuclear complex, in which both copper atoms were coordinated at the periphery of the ligand.

Dinickel-Catalyzed N═N Bond Rotation

Azoarenes function as molecular switches that can be triggered by external stimuli, such as heat, light, and electrochemical potential. Here, we show that a dinickel catalyst can induce cis/trans isomerization in azoarenes through a N═N bond rotation mechanism. Catalytic intermediates containing azoarenes bound in both the cis and trans forms are characterized. Solid-state structures reveal the importance of π-back-bonding interactions from the dinickel active site in lowering the N═N bond order and accelerating bond rotation. The scope of the catalytic isomerization includes high-performance acyclic, cyclic, and polymeric azoarene switches.

Adding Diversity to Diiron Aminocarbyne Complexes with Amine Ligands

The reactions of the diiron aminocarbyne complexes [Fe2Cp2(NCMe)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Me, 1aNCMe; R = Cy, 1bNCMe), freshly prepared from the tricarbonyl precursors 1a–b, with primary amines containing an additional function (i.e., alcohol or ether) proceeded with the replacement of the labile acetonitrile ligand and formation of [Fe2Cp2(NH2CH2CH2OR’)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Me, R’ = H, 2a; R = Cy, R’ = H, 2b; R = Cy, R’ = Me, 2c) in 81–95% yields. The diiron-oxazolidinone conjugate [Fe2Cp2(NH2OX)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)2}]CF3SO3, 3, was prepared from 1a, 3-(2-aminoethyl)-5-phenyloxazolidin-2-one (NH2OX) and Me3NO, and finally isolated in 96% yield. In contrast, the one pot reactions of 1a-b with NHEt2 in the presence of Me3NO gave the unstable [Fe2Cp2(NHEt2)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(R)}]CF3SO3 (R = Me, 4a; R = Cy, 4b) as unclean products. All diiron complexes were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques; moreover, the behavior of 2a–c and 3 in aqueous media was ascertained.

Structure and bonding of proximity-enforced main-group dimers stabilized by a rigid naphthyridine diimine ligand

The development of ligands capable of effectively stabilizing highly reactive main-group species has led to the experimental realization of a variety of systems with fascinating properties. In this work, we computationally investigate the electronic, structural, energetic, and bonding features of proximity-enforced group 13-15 homodimers stabilized by a rigid expanded pincer ligand based on the 1,8-naphthyridine (napy) core. We show that the redox-active naphthyridine diimine (NDI) ligand enables a wide variety of structural motifs and element-element interaction modes, the latter ranging from isolated, element-centered lone pairs (e.g., E = Si, Ge) to cases where through-space π bonds (E = Pb), element-element multiple bonds (E = P, As) and biradical ground states (E = N) are observed. Our results hint at the feasibility of NDI-E₂ species as viable synthetic targets, highlighting the versatility and potential applications of napy-based ligands in main-group chemistry.

Quantification of the Steric Properties of 1,8-Naphthyridine-Based Ligands in Dinuclear Complexes

Steric properties of ligands are an important parameter for tuning the reactivity of the corresponding complexes. For various ligands used in mononuclear complexes, methods have been developed to quantify their steric bulk. In this work, we present an expansion of the buried volume and the G-parameter to quantify the steric properties of 1,8-napthyridine-based dinuclear complexes. Using this methodology, we explored the tunability of the steric properties associated with these ligands and complexes.

E-selective Semi-hydrogenation of Alkynes under Mild Conditions by a Diruthenium Hydride Complex

The synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of a new class of diruthenium hydrido carbonyl complexes bound to the ^tBu PNNP expanded pincer ligand is described. Reacting ^tBu PNNP with two equiv of RuHCl(PPh₃ )₃ (CO) at 140 °C produces an insoluble air-stable complex, which was structurally characterized as [Ru₂ (^tBu PNNP)H(μ-H)Cl(μ-Cl)(CO)₂ ] (1) using solid-state NMR, IR and X-ray absorption spectroscopies and follow-up reactivity. A reaction with KOtBu results in deprotonation of a methylene linker to produce [Ru₂ (^tBu PNNP^* )H(μ-H)(μ-OtBu)(CO)₂ ] (3) featuring a partially dearomatized naphthyridine core. This enables metal-ligand cooperative activation of H₂ analogous to the mononuclear analogue, [Ru(^tBu PNP*)H(CO)]. In contrast to the mononuclear system, the bimetallic analogue 3 catalyzes the E-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes at ambient temperature and atmospheric H₂ pressure with good functional group tolerance. Monitoring the semi-hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy shows the intermediacy of Z-stilbene, which is subsequently isomerized to the E-isomer. Initial findings into the mode of action of this system are provided, including the spectroscopic characterization of a polyhydride intermediate and the isolation of a deactivated species with a partially hydrogenated naphthyridine backbone.

Heterometallic bond activation enabled by unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds: bridging the opposites

Heterobi- and multimetallic complexes providing close proximity between several metal centers serve as active species in artificial and enzymatic catalysis, and in model systems, showing unique modes of metal-metal cooperative bond activation. Through the rational design of well-defined, unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds, we create a convenient approach to support the assembly of heterometallic species in a well-defined and site-specific manner, preventing them from scrambling and dissociation. In this perspective, we will outline general strategies for the design of unsymmetrical ligands to support heterobi- and multimetallic complexes that show reactivity in various types of heterometallic cooperative bond activation.

Alkyne-alkenyl coupling at a diruthenium complex

Dimetallic complexes are suitable platforms for the assembly of small molecular units, and the reactivity of bridging alkenyl ligands has been widely investigated to model C-C bond forming processes. Here, we report the unusual coupling of an alkenyl ligand, bridging coordinated on a diruthenium scaffold, with a series of alkynes, revealing two possible outcomes. The diruthenium complex [Ru₂Cp₂(Cl)(CO)(μ-CO){μ-η¹:η²-C(Ph)CH(Ph)}], 2, was prepared in two steps from [Ru₂Cp₂(CO)₂(μ-CO){μ-η¹:η²-C(Ph)CH(Ph)}]BF₄, [1]BF4, in 69% yield. Then, the reaction of 2 with C₂(CO₂Me)₂, promoted by AgCF₃SO₃ in dichloromethane, afforded in 51% yield the complex [Ru₂Cp₂(CO)₂{μ-η³:η²-C(Ph)CH(Ph)C(CO₂Me)C(CO₂Me)}]CF₃SO₃, [3]CF₃SO₃, containing a ruthenacyclopentene-based hydrocarbyl ligand. On the other hand, 2 reacted with other alkynes and AgX salts to give the butadienyl complexes [Ru₂Cp₂(CO)₂{μ-η³:η²-C(R)CH(R')C(Ph)C(Ph)}]X (R = R' = H, [4]BF₄; R = R' = Me, [5]CF₃SO₃; R = R' = Ph, [6]CF₃SO₃; R = Ph, R' = H, [7]CF₃SO₃), in 42-56% yields. All products were characterized by IR and NMR spectroscopy, and by single crystal X-ray diffraction in the cases of 2, [3]CF₃SO₃ and [6]BF₄. DFT calculations highlighted the higher stability of [4-7]⁺-like structures with respect to the corresponding [3]⁺-like isomers. It is presumable that [3]⁺-like isomers initially form as kinetic intermediates, then undergo H-migration which is disfavoured in the presence of carboxylato substituents on the alkyne. Such hypothesis was supported by the computational optimization of the transition states for H-migration in the cases of R = R' = H and R = R' = CO₂Me.

Photochemistry Journey to Multielectron and Multiproton Chemical Transformation

The odyssey of photochemistry is accompanied by the journey to manipulate "electrons" and "protons" in time, in space, and in energy. Over the past decades, single-electron (1e^-) photochemical transformations have brought marvelous achievements. However, as each photon absorption typically generates only one exciton pair, it is exponentially challenging to accomplish multielectron and proton photochemical transformations. The multistep differences in thermodynamics and kinetics urgently require us to optimize light harvesting, expedite consecutive electron transfer, manipulate the interaction of catalysts with substrates, and coordinate proton transfer kinetics to furnish selective bond formations. Tandem catalysis enables orchestrating different photochemical events and catalytic transformations from subpicoseconds to seconds, which facilitates multielectron redox chemistries and brings consecutive, value-added reactivities. Joint efforts in molecular and material design, mechanistic understanding, and theoretical modeling will bring multielectron and proton synthetic opportunities for fuels, fertilizers, and chemicals with enhanced versatility, efficiency, selectivity, and scalability, thus taking better advantage of photons (i.e., sunlight) for our sustainable society.

Robust dicopper(i) μ-boryl complexes supported by a dinucleating naphthyridine-based ligand

Copper boryl species have been widely invoked as reactive intermediates in Cu-catalysed C–H borylation reactions, but their isolation and study have been challenging. Use of the robust dinucleating ligand DPFN (2,7-bis(fluoro-di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-1,8-naphthyridine) allowed for the isolation of two very thermally stable dicopper(i) boryl complexes, [(DPFN)Cu₂(μ-Bpin)][NTf₂] (2) and [(DPFN)Cu₂(μ-Bcat)][NTf₂] (4) (pin = 2,3-dimethylbutane-2,3-diol; cat = benzene-1,2-diol). These complexes were prepared by cleavage of the corresponding diborane via reaction with the alkoxide [(DPFN)Cu₂(μ-O^tBu)][NTf₂] (3). Reactivity studies illustrated the exceptional stability of these boryl complexes (thermal stability in solution up to 100 °C) and their role in the activation of C(sp)–H bonds. X-ray diffraction and computational studies provide a detailed description of the bonding and electronic structures in these complexes, and suggest that the dinucleating character of the naphthyridine-based ligand is largely responsible for their remarkable stability.

Cu(i) boryl species have been widely invoked as reactive intermediates in Cu-catalysed C–H borylations, but their isolation has been challenging. In this work, thermally robust dicopper(I) boryl complexes have been synthesized and studied in detail.

Combining metal-metal cooperativity, metal-ligand cooperativity and chemical non-innocence in diiron carbonyl complexes

Several metalloenzymes, including [FeFe]-hydrogenase, employ cofactors wherein multiple metal atoms work together with surrounding ligands that mediate heterolytic and concerted proton-electron transfer (CPET) bond activation steps. Herein, we report a new dinucleating PNNP expanded pincer ligand, which can bind two low-valent iron atoms in close proximity to enable metal-metal cooperativity (MMC). In addition, reversible partial dearomatization of the ligand's naphthyridine core enables both heterolytic metal-ligand cooperativity (MLC) and chemical non-innocence through CPET steps. Thermochemical and computational studies show how a change in ligand binding mode can lower the bond dissociation free energy of ligand C(sp3)-H bonds by ∼25 kcal mol-1. H-atom abstraction enabled trapping of an unstable intermediate, which undergoes facile loss of two carbonyl ligands to form an unusual paramagnetic (S = ) complex containing a mixed-valent iron(0)-iron(i) core bound within a partially dearomatized PNNP ligand. Finally, cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that these diiron complexes show catalytic activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction. This work presents the first example of a ligand system that enables MMC, heterolytic MLC and chemical non-innocence, thereby providing important insights and opportunities for the development of bimetallic systems that exploit these features to enable new (catalytic) reactivity.

Diphosphino-Functionalized 1,8-Naphthyridines: a Multifaceted Ligand Platform for Boranes and Diboranes

A 1,8‐naphthyridine diphosphine (NDP) reacts with boron‐containing Lewis acids to generate complexes featuring a number of different naphthyridine bonding modes. When exposed to diborane B₂Br₄, NDP underwent self‐deprotonation to afford [NDP‐B₂Br₃]Br, an unsymmetrical diborane comprised of four fused rings. The reaction of two equivalents of monoborane BBr₃ and NDP in a non‐polar solvent provided the simple phosphine‐borane adduct [NDP(BBr₃)₂], which then underwent intramolecular halide abstraction to furnish the salt [NDP‐BBr₂][BBr₄], featuring a different coordination mode from that of [NDP‐B₂Br₃]Br. Direct deprotonation of NDP by KHMDS or PhCH₂K generates mono‐ and dipotassium reagents, respectively. The monopotassium reagent reacts with one or half an equivalent of B₂(NMe₂)₂Cl₂ to afford NDP‐based diboranes with three or four amino substituents.

Metal-to-Metal Distance Modulation by Ligand Design: A Case Study of Structure-Property Correlation in Planar Chiral Cyclophanyl Metal Complexes

Multinuclear metal complexes have seen tremendous progress in synthetic advances, their versatile structural features, and emerging applications. Here, we conceptualize Metal-to-Metal distance modulation in cyclophanyl metal complexes by bridging ligand design employing the co-facially stacked cyclophanyl-derived pseudo-geminal, -ortho, -meta, and -para constitutional isomers grafted with N-, O-, and P- containing chelates that allow the installation of diverse (hetero)metallic moieties in a distance-defined and spatially-oriented relation to one another. Metal-to-Metal distance modulation and innate transannular "through-space" π-π electronic interactions via the co-facially stacked benzene rings in cyclophanyl-derived complexes as well as their specific stereochemical structural features (element of planar chirality) are crucial factors that contribute to the tuning of structure-property relationships, which stand at the very center from the perspective of cooperative effects in catalysis as well as emerging material applications.

Dinickel Active Sites Supported by Redox-Active Ligands

Redox reactions that take place in enzymes and on the surfaces of heterogeneous catalysts often require active sites that contain multiple metals. By contrast, there are very few homogeneous catalysts with multinuclear active sites, and the field of organometallic chemistry continues to be dominated by the study of single metal systems. Multinuclear catalysts have the potential to display unique properties owing to their ability to cooperatively engage substrates. Furthermore, direct metal-to-metal covalent bonding can give rise to new electronic configurations that dramatically impact substrate binding and reactivity. In order to effectively capitalize on these features, it is necessary to consider strategies to avoid the dissociation of fragile metal-metal bonds in the course of a catalytic cycle. This Account describes one approach to accomplishing this goal using binucleating redox-active ligands.In 2006, Chirik showed that pyridine-diimines (PDI) have sufficiently low-lying π* levels that they can be redox-noninnocent in low-valent iron complexes. Extending this concept, we investigated a series of dinickel complexes supported by naphthyridine-diimine (NDI) ligands. These complexes can promote a broad range of two-electron redox processes in which the NDI ligand manages electron equivalents while the metals remain in a Ni(I)-Ni(I) state.Using (NDI)Ni₂ catalysts, we have uncovered cases where having two metals in the active site addresses a problem in catalysis that had not been adequately solved using single-metal systems. For example, mononickel complexes are capable of stoichiometrically dimerizing aryl azides to form azoarenes but do not turn over due to strong product inhibition. By contrast, dinickel complexes are effective catalysts for this reaction and avoid this thermodynamic sink by binding to azoarenes in their higher-energy cis form.Dinickel complexes can also activate strong bonds through the cooperative action of both metals. Norbornadiene has a ring-strain energy that is similar to that of cyclopropane but is not prone to undergoing C-C oxidative addition with monometallic complexes. Using an (NDI)Ni₂ complex, norbornadiene undergoes rapid ring opening by the oxidative addition of the vinyl and bridgehead carbons. An inspection of the resulting metallacycle reveals that it is stabilized through a network of secondary Ni-π interactions. This reactivity enabled the development of a catalytic carbonylative rearrangement to form fused bicyclic dienones.These vignettes and others described in this Account highlight some of the implications of metal-metal bonding in promoting a challenging step in a catalytic cycle or adjusting the thermodynamic landscape of key intermediates. Given that our studies have focused nearly exclusively on the (NDI)Ni₂ system, we anticipate that many more such cases are left to be discovered as other transition-metal combinations and ligand classes are explored.

Construction of modular Pd/Cu multimetallic chains via ligand- and anion-controlled metal-metal interactions

The presence of Pd⋯Cu and Pd⋯Pd interactions as well as the order of metal atoms in a chain held by a modular polynucleating ligand is controlled by the coordinating ability of the anions, leading to selective formation of bi- and tetranuclear Pd/Cu and Pd₄ chains. Metal-metal cooperative reactivity in these complexes was tested in Ar-O bond formation and alkyne activation.

Monometallic and Multimetallic Zinc Complexes of 2,7-Bis(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine

A series of zinc complexes of 2,7-bis(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine (BPNP) has been synthesised and characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction and solution state NMR spectroscopic studies. Reactions of BPNP with zinc acetate and zinc chloride were found to give mononuclear complexes of the form [Zn(BPNP)X2] (X = OAc, Cl), whereas reactions with zinc triflate led to a mixture of products. Several of these were identified crystallographically as [Zn(BPNP-H)(H2O)4](OTf)3 and [Zn(BPNP-H)(NCMe)(OTf)2]OTf, in which protonation of one pyridyl group occurred, and the dimeric species [Zn2(BPNP)4(μ-H2O)2](OTf)4. A trimetallic complex [Zn3(μ2-BPNP)(μ2-OAc)3(OAc)2(μ3-OH)] was also isolated from reactions involving zinc acetate, and demonstrates the ability of BPNP to coordinate two zinc atoms in the adjacent binding pockets.

Synthesis of an expanded pincer ligand and its bimetallic coinage metal complexes

An expanded pincer ligand tBu-PONNOP (2,7-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinito)-1,8-naphthyridine) has been synthesised and its coordination to coinage metals has been studied. Bimetallic complexes were produced with metal halide salts of the type [M₂X₂(tBu-PONNOP)] (X = Cl, M = Au, Ag, Cu; X = I, M = Cu) with a varying degree of interaction with the naphthyridyl backbone in the order Au < Ag < Cu. The salts [Ag₂(tBu-PONNOP)₂][BAr^F₄]₂ (Ar^F = 3,5-C₆H₃(CF₃)₂) and [Ag₂(NCMe)₂(tBu-PONNOP)]X₂ (X = BAr^F₄, PF₆) were prepared, which may serve as a source of tBu-PONNOP via transmetallation.

Transmetalation Reactions Triggered by Electron Transfer between Organocopper Complexes

[Cu(bipy)(C₆F₅)] reacts with most aryl iodides to form heterobiphenyls by cross-coupling, but when Rf–I is used (Rf = 3,5-dicholoro-2,4,6-trifluorophenyl), homocoupling products are also formed. Kinetic studies suggest that, for the homocoupling reaction, a mechanism based on transmetalation from [Cu(bipy)(C₆F₅)] to Cu(III) intermediates formed in the oxidative addition step is at work. Density functional theory calculations show that the interaction between these Cu(III) species and the starting Cu(I) complex involves a Cu(I)–Cu(III) electron transfer concerted with the formation of an iodine bridge between the metals and that a fast transmetalation takes place in a dimer in a triplet state between two Cu(II) units.

In copper-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, electron-transfer processes between Cu(I) and Cu(III) species are overlooked behind RDS (C−X activation). Density functional theory studies considering two molecules of the catalyst and two spin states throughout the course of the reaction have revealed the feasibility of such a process and the transmetalation between Cu(II) species, justifying in this way the formation of homocoupling products.

A Dicopper Nitrenoid by Oxidation of a CuICuI Core: Synthesis, Electronic Structure, and Reactivity

A dicopper nitrenoid complex was prepared by formal oxidative addition of the nitrenoid fragment to a dicopper(I) center by reaction with the iminoiodinane PhINTs (Ts = tosylate). This nitrenoid complex, (DPFN)Cu₂(μ-NTs)[NTf₂]₂ (DPFN = 2,7-bis(fluorodi(2-pyridyl)methyl)-1,8-naphthyridine), is a powerful H atom abstractor that reacts with a range of strong C-H bonds to form a mixed-valence Cu(I)/Cu(II) μ-NHTs amido complex in the first example of a clean H atom transfer to a dicopper nitrenoid core. In line with this reactivity, DFT calculations reveal that the nitrenoid is best described as an iminyl (NR radical anion) complex. The nitrenoid was trapped by the addition of water to form a mixed-donor hydroxo/amido dicopper(II) complex, which was independently obtained by reaction of a Cu₂(μ-OH)₂ complex with an amine through a protonolysis pathway. This mixed-donor complex is an analogue for the proposed intermediate in copper-catalyzed Chan-Evans-Lam coupling, which proceeds via C-X (X = N or O) bond formation. Treatment of the dicopper(II) mixed donor complex with MgPh₂(THF)₂ resulted in generation of a mixture that includes both phenol and a previously reported dicopper(I) bridging phenyl complex, illustrating that both reduction of dicopper(II) to dicopper(I) and concomitant C-X bond formation are feasible.

Selective Anion Binding Drives the Formation of AgI8L6 and AgI12L6 Six-Stranded Helicates

Here we describe the formation of an unexpected and unique family of hollow six-stranded helicates. The formation of these structures depends on the coordinative flexibility of silver and the 2-formyl-1,8-napthyridine subcomponent. Crystal structures show that these assemblies are held together by Ag4I, Ag4Br, or Ag6(SO4)2 clusters, where the templating anion plays an integral structure-defining role. Prior to the addition of the anionic template, no six-stranded helicate was observed to form, with the system instead consisting of a dynamic mixture of triple helicate and tetrahedron. Six-stranded helicate formation was highly sensitive to the structure of the ligand, with minor modifications inhibiting its formation. This work provides an unusual example of mutual stabilization between metal clusters and a self-assembled metal-organic cage. The selective preparation of this anisotropic host demonstrates new modes of guiding selective self-assembly using silver(I), whose many stable coordination geometries render design difficult.
