Engineering Li Metal Anode for Garnet-Based Solid-State Batteries

Vitrified Metal-Organic Framework Composite Electrolyte Enabling Dendrite-Free and Long-Lifespan Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are still plagued with low ionic conductivity and inferior interfacial contact, which hinder their practical implementation. Herein, a quasi-solid-state composite electrolyte, poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL)/glassy ZIF-62 (PGZ) with fast ion transport and intimate interface contact, is fabricated via in situ polymerization. The in situ polymerization of DOL in an electrolyte matrix not only improves the exterior interface between electrolyte/electrode but also optimizes the inner interfaces among glassy particles, rendering PGZ as an uninterrupted ionic conductor. Moreover, PGZ inherits the superior ionic conductivity and the robust dendrite prohibition of glassy MOFs originating from their grain-boundary-free nature, isotropy, and abundant groups containing N species. As expected, our proposed PGZ exhibits a prominent ionic conductivity of 6.3 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 20 °C. Li|PGZ|LiFePO4 delivers an outstanding rate performance (103 mAh g-1 at 4C) and a stable cycling capacity (118 mAh g-1 at 1C over 1000 cycles). PGZ also presents excellent low-temperature cycling performance with 75 mAh g-1 for 480 cycles at -20 °C and excellent flame retardance. Even at a high loading of 12.1 mg cm-2, it can still discharge at 140 mAh g-1 for 100 cycles. Hence, PGZ prepared via in situ polymerization holds enormous prospects as a solid-state electrolyte for high-performance and safe LMBs.

Recent Progress on the Air-Stable Battery Materials for Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) offer numerous advantages in terms of safety and theoretical specific energy density. However, their main components namely lithium metal anode, solid-state electrolyte, and cathode, show chemical instability when exposed to humid air, which results in low capacities and poor cycling stability. Recent studies have shown that bioinspired hydrophobic materials with low specific surface energies can protect battery components from corrosion caused by humid air. Air-stable inorganic materials that densely cover the surface of battery components can also provide protection, which improves the storage stability of the battery components, broadens their processing conditions, and ultimately decreases their processing costs while enhancing their safety. In this review, the mechanism behind the surface structural degradation of battery components and the resulting consequences are discussed. Subsequently, recent strategies are reviewed to address this issue from the perspectives of lithium metal anodes, solid-state electrolytes, and cathodes. Finally, a brief conclusion is provided on the current strategies and fabrication suggestions for future safe air-stable SSLMBs.

Enhancing Fast-Charge Capabilities in Solid-State Lithium Batteries through the Integration of High Li0.5La0.5TiO3 (LLTO) Content in the Lithium-Metal Anode

Solid-state batteries (SSBs), which have high energy density and are safe, are recognized as an important field of study. However, the poor interfacial contact with high resistance, the dendrite problem, and the volume change of the metallic lithium anode prevent the use of SSBs. Li0.5La0.5TiO3 (LLTO) particles and molten lithium were used to create a high-performance LLTO-Li composite lithium with a sequential ion-conducting phase. With garnet electrolytes, this lithium has better wettability and reduced surface tension. To compensate for the lithium depletion that occurs during stripping, the Li-Ti phase with a high ionic diffusion coefficient that forms in the anode can rapidly transport lithium from the bulk to the solid-state interface, ensuring tight interface contact, preventing the formation of gaps, and homogenizing the current and Li+ flux. The LLTO-Li| LLZTO| LLTO-Li symmetric cell exhibits a good cyclic stability of 1000 h at room temperature, a low interfacial resistance of 22 Ω cm2, and a high critical current density of 1.2 mA cm-2. Furthermore, fully built cells with a LiFePO4 cathode showed outstanding cycling performance, maintaining 95% of their capacity after 900 cycles at 1 C and 92% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 2 C.

Enhanced ion-electron mixing interface for high energy solid-state lithium metal batteries

Solid-state Li metal batteries (SSLMBs) are famous for superior security and excellent energy density. Nevertheless, the poor interfacial contact between solid lithium and electrode is one key problem in the development of SSLMBs, resulting in high impedance and growth of lithium dendrites along the grain boundaries. Herein, an innovative and accessible approach has been applied to SSLMBs, which introduces an ion-electron mixing (IEM) interface on the surface of Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP). The IEM interlayer generates LixSn/LiI of fast lithium-ion conductor through an in-situ reaction. The existence of LiI would promote the quick transmission of Li+ at the interface and inhibit the electronic conduction, thus restraining the growth of lithium dendrites. The batteries with IEM@LATP electrolyte could stably cycle more than 1000 h at high current density of 0.1 mA cm-2. Even increasing the current density to 3.0 mA cm-2, the batteries still could work normally. This novel and viable approach offers a robust basis for the practical application of SSLMBs and has some general applicability to other solid-state batteries.

Correlating the Microstructure and Current Density of the Li/Garnet Interface

Solid-state lithium batteries hold great promise for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the formation of lithium filaments within the solid electrolyte remains a critical challenge. In this study, we investigate the crucial role of morphology in determining the resistance of garnet-type electrolytes to lithium filaments. By proposing a new test method, namely, cyclic linear sweep voltammetry, we can effectively evaluate the electrolyte resistance against lithium filaments. Our findings reveal a strong correlation between the microscopic morphology of the solid electrolyte and its resistance to lithium filaments. Samples with reduced pores and multiple grain boundaries demonstrate remarkable performance, achieving a critical current density of up to 3.2 mA cm-2 and excellent long-term cycling stability. Kelvin probe force microscopy and finite element method simulation results shed light on the impact of grain boundaries and electrolyte pores on lithium-ion transport and filament propagation. To inhibit lithium penetration, minimizing pores and achieving a uniform morphology with small grains and plenty of grain boundaries are essential.
