Catalytic Nanoparticles in Biomedical Applications: Exploiting Advanced Nanozymes for Therapeutics and Diagnostics

Catalytic nanoparticles (CNPs) as heterogeneous catalyst reveals superior activity due to their physio-chemical features, such as high surface-to-volume ratio and unique optical, electric, and magnetic properties. The CNPs, based on their physio-chemical nature, can either increase the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level for tumor and antibacterial therapy or eliminate the ROS for cytoprotection, anti-inflammation, and anti-aging. In addition, the catalytic activity of nanozymes can specifically trigger a specific reaction accompanied by the optical feature change, presenting the feasibility of biosensor and bioimaging applications. Undoubtedly, CNPs play a pivotal role in pushing the evolution of technologies in medical and clinical fields, and advanced strategies and nanomaterials rely on the input of chemical experts to develop. Herein, a systematic and comprehensive review of the challenges and recent development of CNPs for biomedical applications is presented from the viewpoint of advanced nanomaterial with unique catalytic activity and additional functions. Furthermore, the biosafety issue of applying biodegradable and non-biodegradable nanozymes and future perspectives are critically discussed to guide a promising direction in developing span-new nanozymes and more intelligent strategies for overcoming the current clinical limitations.

Unveiling Hidden Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Guided by Intuition-Based Geometrical Factors

Herein, synthesizable candidate topologies to form zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are efficiently identified from over 2 000 000 hypothetical structures in zeolite databases, using structural descriptors extracted from known ZIFs. A combination of intuition-based structural descriptors, such as ring patterns, node numbers, and TOT bridging angles (T = tetrahedral metal nodes in zeolites and ZIFs), is used as data filters to eliminate topologies infeasible for ZIF formation. Carefully chosen structural descriptors facilitate the prediction of plausible ZIF topologies. To investigate potential applications as porous ZIFs, this work performs hydrogen adsorption screening and suggested notable target ZIFs. The collection of new plausible ZIFs, derived from the combined descriptors, will be a structural blueprint for synthetic chemists.

The Promising Nanovectors for Gene Delivery in Plant Genome Engineering

Highly efficient gene delivery systems are essential for genetic engineering in plants. Traditional delivery methods have been widely used, such as Agrobacterium-mediated transformation, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated delivery, biolistic particle bombardment, and viral transfection. However, genotype dependence and other drawbacks of these techniques limit the application of genetic engineering, particularly genome editing in many crop plants. There is a great need to develop newer gene delivery vectors or methods. Recently, nanomaterials such as mesoporous silica particles (MSNs), AuNPs, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and layer double hydroxides (LDHs), have emerged as promising vectors for the delivery of genome engineering tools (DNA, RNA, proteins, and RNPs) to plants in a species-independent manner with high efficiency. Some exciting results have been reported, such as the successful delivery of cargo genes into plants and the generation of genome stable transgenic cotton and maize plants, which have provided some new routines for genome engineering in plants. Thus, in this review, we summarized recent progress in the utilization of nanomaterials for plant genetic transformation and discussed the advantages and limitations of different methods. Furthermore, we emphasized the advantages and potential broad applications of nanomaterials in plant genome editing, which provides guidance for future applications of nanomaterials in plant genetic engineering and crop breeding.

Cross-species transcriptomic signatures identify mechanisms related to species sensitivity and common responses to nanomaterials

Physico-chemical characteristics of engineered nanomaterials are known to be important in determining the impact on organisms but effects are equally dependent upon the characteristics of the organism exposed. Species sensitivity may vary by orders of magnitude, which could be due to differences in the type or magnitude of the biochemical response, exposure or uptake of nanomaterials. Synthesizing conclusions across studies and species is difficult as multiple species are not often included in a study, and differences in batches of nanomaterials, the exposure duration and media across experiments confound comparisons. Here three model species, Danio rerio, Daphnia magna and Chironomus riparius, that differ in sensitivity to lithium cobalt oxide nanosheets are found to differ in immune-response, iron-sulfur protein and central nervous system pathways, among others. Nanomaterial uptake and dissolution does not fully explain cross-species differences. This comparison provides insight into how biomolecular responses across species relate to the varying sensitivity to nanomaterials.

Binding of polar and hydrophobic molecules at the LiCoO2 (001)-water interface: force field development and molecular dynamics simulations

A classical model in the framework of the INTERFACE force field has been developed for treating the LiCoO₂ (LCO) (001)/water interface. In comparison to ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on density functional theory, MD simulations using the classical model lead to generally reliable descriptions of interfacial properties, such as the density distribution of water molecules. Water molecules in close contact with the LCO surface form a strongly adsorbed layer, which leads to a free energy barrier for the adsorption of polar or charged molecules to the LCO surface. Moreover, due to the strong hydrogen bonding interactions with the LCO surface, the first water layer forms an interface that exhibits hydrophobic characters, leading to favorable adsorption of non-polar molecules to the interface. Therefore, despite its highly polar nature, the LCO (001) surface binds not only polar/charged but also non-polar solutes. As an application, the model is used to analyze the adsorption of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and its molecular components to the LCO (001) surface in water. The results suggest that recently observed redox activity of NADH at the LCO/water interface was due to the co-operativity between the ribose component, which drives binding to the LCO surface, and the nicotinamide moiety, which undergoes oxidation.

Rheo-SAXS study of shear-induced orientation and relaxation of cellulose nanocrystal and montmorillonite nanoplatelet dispersions

The development of robust production processes is essential for the introduction of advanced materials based on renewable and Earth-abundant resources. Cellulose nanomaterials have been combined with other highly available nanoparticles, in particular clays, to generate multifunctional films and foams. Here, the structure of dispersions of rod-like cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and montmorillonite nanoplatelets (MNT) was probed using small-angle X-ray scattering within a rheological cell (Rheo-SAXS). Shear induced a high degree of particle orientation in both the CNC-only and CNC:MNT composite dispersions. Relaxation of the shear-induced orientation in the CNC-only dispersion decayed exponentially and reached a steady-state within 20 seconds, while the relaxation of the CNC:MNT composite dispersion was found to be strongly retarded and partially inhibited. Viscoelastic measurements and Guinier analysis of dispersions at the shear rate of 0.1 s^-1 showed that the addition of MNT promotes gel formation of the CNC:MNT composite dispersions. A better understanding of shear-dependent assembly and orientation of multi-component nanoparticle dispersions can be used to process materials with improved mechanical and functional properties.

Energy Starvation in Daphnia magna from Exposure to a Lithium Cobalt Oxide Nanomaterial

Growing evidence across organisms points to altered energy metabolism as an adverse outcome of metal oxide nanomaterial toxicity, with a mechanism of toxicity potentially related to the redox chemistry of processes involved in energy production. Despite this evidence, the significance of this mechanism has gone unrecognized in nanotoxicology due to the field's focus on oxidative stress as a universal─but nonspecific─nanotoxicity mechanism. To further explore metabolic impacts, we determined lithium cobalt oxide's (LCO's) effects on these pathways in the model organism Daphnia magna through global gene-expression analysis using RNA-Seq and untargeted metabolomics by direct-injection mass spectrometry. Our results show that a sublethal 1 mg/L 48 h exposure of D. magna to LCO nanosheets causes significant impacts on metabolic pathways versus untreated controls, while exposure to ions released over 48 h does not. Specifically, transcriptomic analysis using DAVID indicated significant enrichment (Benjamini-adjusted p ≤0.0.5) in LCO-exposed animals for changes in pathways involved in the cellular response to starvation (25 genes), mitochondrial function (70 genes), ATP-binding (70 genes), oxidative phosphorylation (53 genes), NADH dehydrogenase activity (12 genes), and protein biosynthesis (40 genes). Metabolomic analysis using MetaboAnalyst indicated significant enrichment (γ-adjusted p <0.1) for changes in amino acid metabolism (19 metabolites) and starch, sucrose, and galactose metabolism (7 metabolites). Overlap of significantly impacted pathways by RNA-Seq and metabolomics suggests amino acid breakdown and increased sugar import for energy production. Results indicate that LCO-exposed Daphnia respond to energy starvation by altering metabolic pathways, both at the gene expression and metabolite levels. These results support altered energy production as a sensitive nanotoxicity adverse outcome for LCO exposure and suggest negative impacts on energy metabolism as an important avenue for future studies of nanotoxicity, including for other biological systems and for metal oxide nanomaterials more broadly.

Assembly of cellulose nanocrystals and clay nanoplatelets studied by time-resolved X-ray scattering

Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to probe the assembly of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and montmorillonite (MNT) over a wide concentration range in aqueous levitating droplets. Analysis of the SAXS curves of the one-component and mixed dispersions shows that co-assembly of rod-like CNC and MNT nanoplatelets is dominated by the interactions between the dispersed CNC particles and that MNT promotes gelation and assembly of CNC, which occurred at lower total volume fractions in the CNC:MNT than in the CNC-only dispersions. The CNC dispersions displayed a d ∝ φ-1/2 scaling and a low-q power-law exponent of 2.0-2.2 for volume fractions up to 35%, which indicates that liquid crystal assembly co-exists and competes with gelation.

Lipophilicity of Cationic Ligands Promotes Irreversible Adsorption of Nanoparticles to Lipid Bilayers

A mechanistic understanding of the influence of the surface properties of engineered nanomaterials on their interactions with cells is essential for designing materials for applications such as bioimaging and drug delivery as well as for assessing nanomaterial safety. Ligand-coated gold nanoparticles have been widely investigated because their highly tunable surface properties enable investigations into the effect of ligand functionalization on interactions with biological systems. Lipophilic ligands have been linked to adverse biological outcomes through membrane disruption, but the relationship between ligand lipophilicity and membrane interactions is not well understood. Here, we use a library of cationic ligands coated on 2 nm gold nanoparticles to probe the impact of ligand end group lipophilicity on interactions with supported phosphatidylcholine lipid bilayers as a model for cytoplasmic membranes. Nanoparticle adsorption to and desorption from the model membranes were investigated by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. We find that nanoparticle adsorption to model membranes increases with ligand lipophilicity. The effects of ligand structure on gold nanoparticle attachment were further analyzed using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, which showed that the increase in ligand lipophilicity promotes ligand intercalation into the lipid bilayer. Together, the experimental and simulation results could be described by a two-state model that accounts for the initial attachment and subsequent conversion to a quasi-irreversibly bound state. We find that only nanoparticles coated with the most lipophilic ligands in our nanoparticle library undergo conversion to the quasi-irreversible state. We propose that the initial attachment is governed by interaction between the ligands and phospholipid tail groups, whereas conversion into the quasi-irreversibly bound state reflects ligand intercalation between phospholipid tail groups and eventual lipid extraction from the bilayer. The systematic variation of ligand lipophilicity enabled us to demonstrate that the lipophilicity of cationic ligands correlates with nanoparticle-bilayer adsorption and suggested that changing the nonpolar ligand R group promotes a mechanism of ligand intercalation into the bilayer associated with irreversible adsorption.

Advanced Functional Nanostructures based on Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanomaterials for Water Remediation: A Review

The fast growth of industrialization combined with the increasing population has led to an unparalleled demand for providing water in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective way, which has become one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century faced by global society. The application of nanotechnology in water treatment and pollution cleanup is a promising alternative in order to overcome the current limitations. In particular, the application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) for environmental remediation has currently received remarkable attention due to its unique combination of physicochemical and magnetic properties. Given the broadening use of these functional engineered nanomaterials, there is a growing concern about the adverse effects upon exposure of products and by-products to the environment. This makes vitally relevant the development of green chemistry in the synthesis processes combined with a trustworthy risk assessment of the nanotoxicity of MIONs as the scientific knowledge of the potential hazard of nanomaterials remains limited. This work provides comprehensive coverage of the recent progress on designing and developing iron oxide-based nanomaterials through a green synthesis strategy, including the use of benign solvents and ligands. Despite the limitations of nanotoxicity and environmental risks of iron oxide-based nanoparticles for the ecosystem, this critical review presents a contribution to the emerging knowledge concerning the theoretical and experimental studies on the toxicity of MIONs. Potential improvement of applications of advanced iron oxide-based hybrid nanostructures in water treatment and pollution control is also addressed in this review.

Heterogeneous Fenton catalysts: A review of recent advances

Heterogeneous Fenton catalysts are emerging as excellent materials for applications related to water purification. In this review, recent trends in the synthesis and application of heterogeneous Fenton catalysts for the abatement of organic pollutants and disinfection of microorganisms are discussed. It is noted that as the complexity of cell wall increases, the resistance level towards various disinfectants increases and it requires either harsh conditions or longer exposure time for the complete disinfection. In case of viruses, enveloped viruses (e.g. SARS-CoV-2) are found to be more susceptible to disinfectants than the non-enveloped viruses. The introduction of plasmonic materials with the Fenton catalysts broadens the visible light absorption efficiency of the hybrid material, and incorporation of semiconductor material improves the rate of regeneration of Fe(II) from Fe(III). A special emphasis is given to the use of Fenton catalysts for antibacterial applications. Composite materials of magnetite and ferrites remain a champion in this area because of their easy separation and reuse, owing to their magnetic properties. Iron minerals supported on clay materials, perovskites, carbon materials, zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) dramatically increase the catalytic degradation rate of contaminants by providing high surface area, good mechanical stability, and improved electron transfer. Moreover, insights to the zero-valent iron and its capacity to remove a wide range of organic pollutants, heavy metals and bacterial contamination are also discussed. Real world applications and the role of natural organic matter are summarised. Parameter optimisation (e.g. light source, dosage of catalyst, concentration of H2O2 etc.), sustainable models for the reusability or recyclability of the catalyst and the theoretical understanding and mechanistic aspects of the photo-Fenton process are also explained. Additionally, this review summarises the opportunities and future directions of research in the heterogeneous Fenton catalysis.

Protein Fe-S Centers as a Molecular Target of Toxicity of a Complex Transition Metal Oxide Nanomaterial with Downstream Impacts on Metabolism and Growth

Oxidative stress is frequently identified as a mechanism of toxicity of nanomaterials. However, rarely have the specific underlying molecular targets responsible for these impacts been identified. We previously demonstrated significant negative impacts of transition metal oxide (TMO) lithium-ion battery cathode nanomaterial, lithium cobalt oxide (LCO), on the growth, development, hemoglobin, and heme synthesis gene expression in the larvae of a model sediment invertebrate Chironomus riparius. Here, we propose that alteration of the Fe-S protein function by LCO is a molecular initiating event leading to these changes. A 10 mg/L LCO exposure causes significant oxidation of the aconitase 4Fe-4S center after 7 d as determined from the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements of intact larvae and a significant reduction in the aconitase activity of larval protein after 48 h (p < 0.05). Next-generation RNA sequencing identified significant changes in the expression of genes involved in 4Fe-4S center binding, Fe-S center synthesis, iron ion binding, and metabolism for 10 mg/L LCO at 48 h (FDR-adjusted, p < 0.1). We propose an adverse outcome pathway, where the oxidation of metabolic and regulatory Fe-S centers of proteins by LCO disrupts metabolic homeostasis, which negatively impacts the growth and development, a mechanism that may apply for these conserved proteins across species and for other TMO nanomaterials.

Interfacial water and ion distribution determine ζ potential and binding affinity of nanoparticles to biomolecules

The molecular features that dictate interactions between functionalized nanoparticles and biomolecules are not well understood. This is in part because for highly charged nanoparticles in solution, establishing a clear connection between the molecular features of surface ligands and common experimental observables such as ζ potential requires going beyond the classical models based on continuum and mean field models. Motivated by these considerations, molecular dynamics simulations are used to probe the electrostatic properties of functionalized gold nanoparticles and their interaction with a charged peptide in salt solutions. Counterions are observed to screen the bare ligand charge to a significant degree even at the moderate salt concentration of 50 mM. As a result, the apparent charge density and ζ potential are largely insensitive to the bare ligand charge densities, which fall in the range of ligand densities typically measured experimentally for gold nanoparticles. While this screening effect was predicted by classical models such as the Manning condensation theory, the magnitudes of the apparent surface charge from microscopic simulations and mean-field models are significantly different. Moreover, our simulations found that the chemical features of the surface ligand (e.g., primary vs. quaternary amines, heterogeneous ligand lengths) modulate the interfacial ion and water distributions and therefore the interfacial potential. The importance of interfacial water is further highlighted by the observation that introducing a fraction of hydrophobic ligands enhances the strength of electrostatic binding of the charged peptide. Finally, the simulations highlight that the electric double layer is perturbed upon binding interactions. As a result, it is the bare charge density rather than the apparent charge density or ζ potential that better correlates with binding affinity of the nanoparticle to a charged peptide. Overall, our study highlights the importance of molecular features of the nanoparticle/water interface and underscores a set of design rules for the modulation of electrostatic driven interactions at nano/bio interfaces.

Energy Storage Materials as Emerging Nano-contaminants

New and emerging nanotechnologies are increasingly using nanomaterials that undergo significant chemical reactions upon exposure to environmental conditions. The rapid advent of lithium ion batteries for energy storage in mobile electronics and electric vehicles is leading to rapid increases in the manufacture of complex transition metal oxides that incorporate elements such as Co and Ni that have the potential for significant adverse biological impact. This Perspective summarizes some of the important technological drivers behind complex oxide materials and highlights some of the chemical transformations that need to be understood in order to assess the overall environmental impact associated with energy storage technologies.

Impact of nanomaterials on ecosystems: Mechanistic aspects in vivo

Nanotechnologies are becoming increasingly popular in modern era of human development in every aspect of life. Their impact on our ecosystem in air, soil, and water is largely unknown because of the limited amount of information available, and hence, they require considerable attention. This account highlights the important routes of nanomaterials toxicity in air, soil, and water, their possible impact on the ecosystem and aquatic life. The mechanistic aspects have been focused on the size, shape, and surface modifications of nanomaterials. The preventive measures and future directions along with appropriate designs and implementation of nanotechnologies have been proposed so as to minimize the interactions of nanomaterials with terrestrial flora and aquatic life. Specifically, the focus largely remains on the toxicity of metallic nanoparticles such as gold (Au) and silver (Ag) because of their applications in diverse fields. The account lists some prominent mechanistic routes of nanotoxicity along with in vivo experimental results based on the fundamental understanding that how nanometallic surfaces interact with plant as well as animal biological systems. The appropriate modifications of the nanometallic surfaces with biocompatible molecules are considered to be the most effective preventive measures to reduce the nanotoxicity.

Next-Generation Complex Metal Oxide Nanomaterials Negatively Impact Growth and Development in the Benthic Invertebrate Chironomus riparius upon Settling

Most studies of nanomaterial environmental impacts have focused on relatively simple first-generation nanomaterials, including metals or metal oxides (e.g., Ag, ZnO) for which dissolution largely accounts for toxicity. Few studies have considered nanomaterials with more complex compositions, such as complex metal oxides, which represent an emerging class of next-generation nanomaterials used in commercial products at large scales. Importantly, many nanomaterials are not colloidally stable in aqueous environments and will aggregate and settle, yet most studies use pelagic rather than benthic-dwelling organisms. Here we show that exposure of the model benthic species Chironomus riparius to lithium cobalt oxide (Li _xCo_{1- x}O₂, LCO) and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (Li _xNi _yMn _zCo_{1- y- z}O₂, NMC) at 10 and 100 mg·L^-1 caused 30-60% declines in larval growth and a delay of 7-25 d in adult emergence. A correlated 41-48% decline in larval hemoglobin concentration and related gene expression changes suggest a potential adverse outcome pathway. Metal ions released from nanoparticles do not cause equivalent impacts, indicating a nanospecific effect. Nanomaterials settled within 2 days and indicate higher cumulative exposures to sediment organisms than those in the water column, making this a potentially realistic environmental exposure. Differences in toxicity between NMC and LCO indicate compositional tuning may reduce material impact.

Herringbone-Patterned 3D-Printed Devices as Alternatives to Microfluidics for Reproducible Production of Lipid Polymer Hybrid Nanoparticles

Major barriers to the implementation of nanotechnology include reproducible synthesis and scalability. Batch solution phase methods do not appear to have the potential to overcome these barriers. Microfluidic methods have been investigated as a means to enable controllable and reproducible synthesis; however, the most popular constituent of microfluidics, polydimethylsiloxane, is ill-suited for mass production. Multi-inlet vortex mixers (MIVMs) have been proposed as a method for scalable nanoparticle production; however, the control and reproducibility of the nanoparticle is wanting. Here, we investigate the ability to improve the control and reproducibility of nanoparticles produced by using 3D printed MIVMs with herringbone patterns in the flow channels. We compare three methods, viz., microfluidic, MIVM, and herringbone-patterned MIVM methods, for the synthesis of lipid-polymer hybrid nanoparticles (LPHNPs). The 3D printed herringbone-patterned MIVM method resulted in the smallest LPHNPs with the most uniform size distribution and shows more reproducible results as compared to the other two methods. To elucidate the mechanism underlying these results, concentration slices and vorticity streamlines of mixing chambers have been analyzed for 3D printed herringbone-patterned MIVM devices. The results bode well for LPHNPs, a formulation widely investigated for its improved therapeutic efficacy and biocompatibility. The herringbone-patterned device also has the potential to be broadly applied to many solution phase processes that take advantage of efficient mixing. The methods discussed here have broad implications for reproducible production of nanoparticles with constituents such as siRNA, proteins, quantum dots, and inorganic materials.

The toxicity of coated silver nanoparticles to Daphnia carinata and trophic transfer from alga Raphidocelis subcapitata

Nanoparticles (NPs) are causing threats to the environment. Silver NPs (AgNPs) are increasingly used in commercial products and may end up in freshwater ecosystems. The freshwater organisms are vulnerable due to water-borne and dietary exposure to AgNPs. Surface properties play an important role in the fate and behavior of AgNPs in the aquatic environment and their effects on organisms. However, effects of surface properties of AgNPs on organisms are poorly understood. In this study, we explored the effects of AgNPs coated with three different ligands; Tyrosine (T-AgNP), Epigallocatechin gallate (E-AgNP) and Curcumin (C-AgNP) in relation to the toxicity to a key aquatic organism; Daphnia carinata. The study focused on how coatings determine fate of NPs in the medium, mortality, feeding behaviour, bioaccumulation and trophic transfer from the freshwater alga, Raphidocelis subcapitata to daphnids. NP stability tests indicated that T-AgNPs were least stable in the ASTM daphnia medium while C-AgNPs were most stable. 48 h EC50 values of AgNPs to D. carinata were in the order of E-AgNP (19.37 μg L-1) > C-AgNP (21.37 μg L-1) > T-AgNP (49.74 μg L-1) while the 48 h EC50 value of Ag+ ions was 1.21 μg L-1. AgNP contaminated algae significantly decreased the feeding rates of daphnids. However, no significant differences were observed in feeding rates between algae contaminated with differently coated AgNPs. Trophic transfer studies showed that AgNPs were transferred from algae to daphnids. The bioacumulation of AgNPs in algae and the diet-borne bioaccumulation of AgNPs in daphnids varied for differently coated AgNPs. Bioaccumulation of C-AgNPs in algae was 1.5 time higher than T-AgNPs. However, the accumulation of T-AgNPs in daphnids via trophic transfer was 2.6 times higher than T-AgNPs. The knowledge generated from this study enhances the understanding of surface property dependent toxicity, bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of AgNPs in aquatic environments.

Quaternary Amine-Terminated Quantum Dots Induce Structural Changes to Supported Lipid Bilayers

The cytoplasmic membrane represents an essential barrier between the cytoplasm and the environment external to cells. Interaction with nanomaterials can alter the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane through the formation of holes and membrane thinning, which can ultimately lead to adverse biological impacts. Here we use supported lipid bilayers as experimental models for the cytoplasmic membrane to investigate the impact of quantum dots functionalized with the cationic polymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) on membrane structure. Using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring we show that the positively charged quantum dots attach to and induce structural rearrangement to zwitterionic bilayers in solely the liquid-disordered phase and in those containing phase-segregated liquid-ordered domains. Real-time atomic force microscopy imaging revealed that PDDA-coated quantum dots and, to a lesser extent, PDDA itself induced the disappearance of liquid-ordered domains. We hypothesize this effect is due to an increase in energy per unit area caused by collisions between PDDA-coated quantum dots at the membrane surface. This increase in free energy per area exceeds the approximate free-energy change associated with membrane mixing between the liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered phases and results in the destabilization of membrane domains.

Dissolution of Complex Metal Oxides from First-Principles and Thermodynamics: Cation Removal from the (001) Surface of Li(Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3)O2

The rapid increase in use of Li-ion batteries in portable electronics has created a pressing need to understand the environmental impact and long-term fate of electonic waste (e-waste) products such as heavy and/or reactive metals. The type of e-waste that we focus on here are the complex metal oxide nanomaterials that compose Li-ion battery cathodes. While in operation the complex metal oxides are in a hermetically sealed container. However, at the end of life, improper disposal can cause structural transformations such as dissolution and metal leaching, resulting in a significant exposure risk to the surrounding environment. The transformations that occur between operational to environmental settings gives rise to a stark knowledge gap between macroscopic design and molecular-level behavior. In this study we use theory and modeling to describe and explain previously published experimental data for cation release from Li(Ni_1/3Mn_1/3Co_1/3)O₂ (NMC) nanoparticles in an aqueous environment ( Chem. Mater. 2016 (28) 1092-1100). To better understand the transformations that may occur when this material is exposed to the environment, we compute the free energy of surface dissolution, Δ G, from the complex metal oxide NMC for a range of surface terminations and pH.

Structural organization of lipid-functionalized-Au nanoparticles

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are considered suitable systems for drug delivery and diagnostics with several applications in biomedicine. Size, shape and surface functionalization of these nanoparticles are important parameters influencing their behavior in a biological environment. This study describes the preparation and the characterization of lysophosphocholine coated AuNPs by means of Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Fluorescence Spectroscopy. In particular the structure of the functionalized AuNP suspension, as well as the physical properties, of the nanoparticle organic coating are discussed. The experimental results indicated that functionalized lysophosphocholine-AuNPs form aggregates, which are composed by nanoparticles with core-shell structure. Nevertheless, the nanoparticle suspension resulted to be stable, without significant structural rearrangements even when the temperature was increased to 50 °C. At the same time, experimental evidences also suggested that the 18LPC layer around AuNPs presented a reduced chain packing compared to pure 18LPC aggregates.

Determining surface chemical composition of silver nanoparticles during sulfidation by monitoring the ligand shell

Evaluating the surface and core compositions of transforming nanoparticles (NP) represents a significant measurement challenge but is necessary for predicting performance in applied systems and their toxicity in natural environments. Here, we use X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy to characterize both the surface and core ofpolyvinyl pyrollidone-silver nanoparticles in the presence of two Suwannee River fulvic acid (FA) standards and humic acid (HA) during sulfidation, the predominant transformation pathway in environmental systems. Only by using data from both spectroscopic methods was a clear relationship established between AgNP core composition and FA affinity established, where concomitant loss of FA was observed with Ag₂S formation. Using XPS to measure AgNP surface composition, overlapping trends from XPS on FA I desorption from the AgNP surface as function of surface sulfidation were observed with FA II in the ATR-FTIR measurements. The reproducibility of the changing heterogeneous coating as a function of AgNP sulfidation provided a transferable method to determine the extent of Ag sulfidation without further need for the high resolution, high cost measurement tools that underpinned validation of the method. The relationship was not observed for HA, where a lower affinity to the AgNP surface was observed, suggesting distinct binding to the NP.
