The Synthesis and Properties of Spirophenanthrene

Motivated by the success of 9,9'-spirobifluorene (SBF) in optoelectronic materials, we synthesized a novel spiro compound, spirophenanthrene (SP). Incorporating a phenanthrene unit as the core, we aimed to leverage the π-conjugation of SPs to surpass the limitations of SBF. Experimental and theoretical studies revealed significant advantages over SBF, including red-shifted wavelengths, tunable LUMO energy levels, and enhanced thermal stability. These advantages suggest the potential of SPs as versatile building blocks for diverse optoelectronic devices.

Synthesis, Photophysical and Electrochemical Properties of Spiro-Phosphonium Compounds

A series of spiro-phosphonium compounds have been synthesized by copper-mediated coupling reaction of phosphacyclic compounds with alkynes. Their photophysical properties are tuned by varying substituents and exhibit different luminescent colors from blue to green, and finally, yellow. The fluorescence quantum efficiency of diethyl spiro-xanthenebenzophosphole 3aa in solid and liquid states reached 31% and 76%, respectively. Diphenyl spiro-xanthenebenzophosphole 3ad displayed relatively low cytotoxicity toward lung cancer cells A549 and was able to effectively penetrate the cell membrane and maintain strong staining. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations have been performed to explore the origin of their photophysical properties.

Dihydroindenofluorenes as building units in organic semiconductors for organic electronics

This review aims to discuss organic semiconductors constructed on dihydroindenofluorene positional isomers, which are key molecular scaffolds in organic electronics. Bridged oligophenylenes are key organic semiconductors that have allowed the development of organic electronic technologies. Dihydroindenofluorenes (DHIFs) belong to the family of bridged oligophenylenes constructed on a terphenyl backbone. They have proven to be very promising building blocks for the construction of highly efficient organic semiconductors for all OE devices, namely organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), phosphorescent OLEDs, organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), solar cells, etc.

Redox Active cAAC-Fluorene/Indene Systems Displaying Solvatochromism, Green Luminescence and pH Sensing: Functionalization of Fluorenyl/Indenyl Rings with Radical Carbene

Two new series of air stable compounds of cAAC^X = fluorene/indene (X = Me₂ , Et₂ , Cy) [cAAC = cyclic (alkyl) amino carbene] have been isolated and well characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction, photoluminescence, cyclic voltammogram (CV) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Fluorescence studies reveals green light emission of cAAC bonded fluorene, whereas free fluorene generally displays a violet emission. Interestingly, the sterically crowded cAAC-fluorene analogue display solvatochromism and CF₃ CO₂ H sensing in solution. CV of the these compounds show a quasi-reversible electron transfer process, indicating the functionalization of fluorene/indene with radical anionic form of carbene, confirmed by CV/EPR measurements. DFT/TDDFT calculations and energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) have been carried out to study different aspects of bonding and electronic transitions. Such a class of redox active and thermally stable organic molecules may be suitable for molecule based spin memory devices in future.

Mapping the Regioisomeric Space and Visible Color Range of Purely Organic Dual Emitters with Ultralong Phosphorescence Components: From Violet to Red Towards Pure White Light

We mapped the entire visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum and achieved white light emission (CIE: 0.31, 0.34) by combining the intrinsic ns-fluorescence with ultralong ms-phosphorescence from purely organic dual emitters. We realized small molecular materials showing high photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦL ) in the solid state at room temperature, achieved by active exploration of the regioisomeric substitution space. Chromophore stacking-supported stabilization of triplet excitons with assistance from enhanced intersystem crossing channels in the crystalline state played the primary role for the ultra-long phosphorescence. This strategy covers the entire visible spectrum, based on organic phosphorescent emitters with versatile regioisomeric substitution patterns, and provides a single molecular source of white light with long lifetime (up to 163.5 ms) for the phosphorescent component, and high overall photoluminescence quantum yields (up to ΦL =20 %).

Ditriphenylenothiophene butterfly-shape liquid crystals. The influence of polyarene core topology on self-organization, fluorescence and photoconductivity

Two series of regio-isomeric mesomorphous, luminescent and conductive compounds, based on a ditriphenylenothiophene core (α/β-DTPT), were successfully synthesized by the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling/Scholl cyclo-dehydrogenation reactions tandem.

meta-Terphenyl linked donor-π-acceptor dyads: intramolecular charge transfer controlled by electron acceptor group tuning

A series of meta-terphenyl linked donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) dyads were prepared to understand the electronic effects of a meta-terphenyl linker according to the electron-accepting ability change. The energy band gaps of the dyads were controlled by tuning the accepting ability, which resulted in emission colors ranging from blue-green to red. In the Lippert-Mataga plots, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) behavior was observed, which showed gradually increased ICT characteristics as the accepting ability was increased. On the other hand, in the absorption spectra, a red shift of the ICT transition was observed differently from the electron-accepting ability tendency. Thus, the experimental results show that the ICT is determined by steric hindrance rather than the acceptor ability in the ground state due to the lack of π-conjugation of the terphenyl linker by the electron node in the meta-position, whereas ICT in the excited state is controlled by electron-accepting ability.

Double π-Extended Helicene Derivatives Containing Pentagonal Rings: Synthesis, Crystal Analyses, and Photophysics

Two novel double π-extended [n]helicene (n = 5, 6) derivatives (7b and 9) including pentagonal rings have been synthesized and characterized. Both of them have three isomers containing two enantiomers (P₆), (M₆), and a diastereoisomer in a meso form (P,M). X-ray single crystal analyses suggest that molecules 7b and 9 exhibit offset packing models of (P₆,P₅)- and (M₆,M₅)-isomers. Optical resolution of the resultant compound 7b was finished, and their chiroptical properties, as well as the DFT calculations, were also examined.

Iridium(III)-Catalyzed Diarylation/Annulation of Benzoic Acids: Facile Access to Multi-Aryl Spirobifluorenes as Pure Hydrocarbon Hosts for High-Performance OLEDs

Herein disclosed is the first example of diarylation/annulation of benzoic acids via an iridium catalyst system. This protocol provides a step-economic and highly efficient pathway to 1-aryl, 1,3-diaryl, 1,7-diaryl and 1,3,7-triaryl spirobifluorenes from readily available starting materials. The applications of multi-aryl spirobifluorenes as pure hydrocarbon (PHC) hosts for red, green, and blue (RGB) phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs) were explored. Due to high triplet energies, 1,3-diaryl spirobifluorenes exhibit the potential as the host material of blue PhOLEDs. 1,7-Diaryl spirobifluorene can serve as the host of green PhOLEDs. 1,3,7-Triaryl spirobifluorene is a high-performance host for red PhOLEDs, which exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 27.3 %. This work not only exemplifies the great potential of multi-aryl spirobifluorenes as PHC hosts, but also offers a new approach for the synthesis of these PHC hosts.

Influence of Positional Isomerism on the Chiroptical Properties of Functional Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers

A series of functionalized quinoline-based aromatic oligoamide foldamers were prepared in their two enantiomeric forms, comprising an enantiopure terminal camphanyl chiral inducer, which governed the adjacent (P-/M-) helical-handedness. Hierarchical chirality transfer was further investigated in chromophore-appended variants via a range of electronic and vibrational spectroscopic techniques, including circularly polarized luminescence, vibrational circular dichroism and fluorescence. Intense total and polarized photoluminescence (up to Φ_lum =0.39, g_lum =1.5×10^-3 ) was observed in the visible region from these modular multicomponent architectures and a significant influence of positional isomerism was evidenced. The optimal position of a fluorophore substituent on the quinoline hexamers was determined as being position 2 over position 6, as stronger chiroptical features were systematically observed with the 2-positioned derivatives.

Rigidly Fused Spiro-Conjugated π-Systems

Spiro-fused π-systems have gained considerable attention for their application as semiconductors in molecular electronics. Here, a synopsis regarding recent breakthroughs in ladderized spirobifluorenes and indeno-spirobifluorenes, along with further spiro-condensed heteroatomic hydrocarbons with donor-acceptor moieties, is provided. Additionally, an extended range of rigid spirobifluorene polymers and specific doubly linked spiro-systems with partial chiral character is discussed. The diverse applications of the aforementioned structures are thoroughly evaluated.

A General Synthetic Approach and Photophysical Properties of Regioselectively Fluorinated [5]- and [6]-Helical Bispiroindenofluorenes

A first series of fluorinated [n]helical compounds (n=5 and 6) with the dihydroindenofluorene scaffold was prepared in 5 or 9 (octafluorinated dihydroindenofluorene) steps and their photophysical properties were determined. Rh-catalyzed intramolecular [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization of triyndiols, which were prepared in a modular fashion from simple starting material such as fluorinated haloarylcarbaldehydes, to the intermediate [n]helical dihydroindeno[2,1-c]fluorene-5,8-diols was the crucial synthetic step and proceeded with high efficacy. Their further transformation gave the desired selectively fluorinated bispirodihydroindeno[2,1-c]fluorenes. Their absorption and emission spectra were recorded. The fluorescence quantum yields were up to 92 % and the emission maxima were red-shifted in comparison with their non-fluorinated counterparts (386-413 nm).

Sky-Blue Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence with Intramolecular Spatial Charge Transfer Based on a Dibenzothiophene Sulfone Emitter

Intramolecular spatial charge transfer (ISCT) plays a critical role in determining the optical and charge transport properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. Herein, a new donor/acceptor-type TADF compound based on rigid dibenzothiophene sulfone (DBTS) moiety, STF-DBTS, was designed and synthesized. Fluorene unit was used as a rigid linker to position the rigid acceptor and donor subunit in close vicinity with control over their spacing and molecular structure and to achieve high photoluminescence quantum yield (∼53%) and TADF property. For comparison purposes, we constructed the more flexible STF-DPS with a less rotationally constrained diphenylsulphone (DPS) acceptor instead of the rigid DBTS units, and STF-DPS showed no TADF properties and lower PLQY (16.0%). Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on STF-DBTS achieve an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 10.3% at 488 nm, which is a fivefold improvement in EQE with respect to STF-DPS.

Important role of the position of a functional group in isomers for photophysical and antibacterial properties: a case study with naphthalenemaleonitrile positional isomers

The position of the functional group alters the interactions in the crystal packing, thereby altering the fluorescence responses as well as the antibacterial activities.

9,9′-Spirobifluorene based zinc coordination polymers: a study on linker geometry and topology

We report four Zn-based coordination polymers (CPs), synthesized from three spirobifluorene (SBF) tetracarboxylate ligands, possessing different topologies and dimensionalities.

Spiro-Functionalized Diphenylethenes: Suppression of a Reversible Photocyclization Contributes to the Aggregation-Induced Emission Effect

Many aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials are featured by the diphenylethene (DPE) moiety which exhibits rich photophysical and photochemical activities. The understanding of these activities behind AIE is essential to guide the design of fluorescent materials with improved performance. Herein by fusing a flexible DPE with a rigid spiro scaffold, we report a class of novel deep-blue material with solid-state fluorescent quantum yield (Φ_F) up to 99.8%. Along with the AIE phenomenon, we identified a reversible photocyclization (PC) on DPE with visible chromism, which is, on the contrary, popularized in solutions but blocked by aggregation. We studied the steric and electronic effects of structural perturbation and concluded that the PC is a key process behind the RIMs (restriction of intramolecular motions) mechanism for these materials. Mitigation of the PC leads to enhanced fluorescence in solutions and loss of the AIE characteristics.

[4]Cyclo-N-ethyl-2,7-carbazole: Synthesis, Structural, Electronic and Charge Transport Properties

Nanorings, which are macrocycles possessing radially directed π-orbitals have shown fantastic development in the last ten years. Unravelling their unusual electronic properties has been one of the driving forces of this research field. However, and despite promising properties, their incorporation in organic electronic devices remains very scarce. In this work, we aim to contribute to bridge the gap between organic electronics and nanorings by reporting the synthesis, the structural and electronic properties and the incorporation in an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) of a cyclic tetracarbazole, namely [4]cyclo-N-ethyl-2,7-carbazole ([4]C-Et-Cbz). The structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties have been compared to those of structurally related analogues [4]cyclo-9,9-diethyl-2,7-fluorene [4]C-diEt-F (with carbon bridges) and [8]-cycloparaphenylene [8]CPP (without any bridge) in order to shed light on the impact of the bridging in nanorings. This work shows that nanorings can be used as an active layer in an OFET and provides a first benchmark in term of OFET characteristics for this type of molecules.

New generations of spirobifluorene regioisomers for organic electronics: tuning electronic properties with the substitution pattern

In the present feature article, we present the new generations of spirobifluorenes for organic electronics and we detail the impact of positional isomerism on the electronic properties and device performance.

[4]Cyclofluorene: Unexpected Influence of Alkyl Chain Length

Presented here is the study of a new example of [4]cyclofluorene, with ethyl chains on the bridgeheads. Its molecular structure was established by solution NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Three successive oxidation processes and one reversible reduction were observed through cyclic voltammetry. The optical properties were characterized both in solution and thin film by UV/visible spectroscopy as well as stationary and time-resolved fluorescence. It was found that this [4]cyclofluorene displays different characteristics compared with the other [4]cyclofluorenes substituted by methyl or propyl chains: a simple modification of the chain length induces a non-negligible effect on the emission properties, which must be linked to the specific arrangement of the fluorene units. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the formation of a pseudo-tubular solid-state arrangement of fully symmetrical ring structures, which was not observed for the other members of the [4]cyclofluorenes family. This finding could open the way to modulation of properties of cyclofluorenes through alkyl chain engineering.
