Electronic and Geometric Structure, Optical Properties, and Excited State Behavior in Atomically Precise Thiolate-Stabilized Noble Metal Nanoclusters

Anomalous Structural Transformation of Cu(I) Clusters into Multifunctional CuAg Nanoclusters

We report an anomalous structural transformation of a Cu(I) cluster into two different types of copper-silver (CuAg) alloy nanoclusters. Different from previous reports, we demonstrate that under specifically designed reaction conditions, the Ag-doping could induce a substantial growth of the starting Cu15 and a Ag13Cu20 nanocluster was obtained via the unexpected insertion of an Ag13 kernel inside the Cu(I)-S shell. Ag13Cu20 demonstrates high activity to initiate the photopolymerization of previously hard-to-print inorganic polymers in 3D laser microprinting. Interestingly, a slight modification of the reaction condition leads to the formation of another Ag18-xCuxS (8≤x) nanocluster templated by a central S2- anion, which possesses a unique electronic structure compared to conventional template-free CuAg nanoclusters. Overall, this work unveils the intriguing doping chemistry of Cu clusters, as well as their capability to create different types of alloy nanoclusters with previously unobtainable structures and multifunctionality.

Interplay of kernel shape and surface structure for NIR luminescence in atomically precise gold nanorods

It is challenging to attain strong near-infrared (NIR) emissive gold nanoclusters. Here we show a rod-shaped cluster with the composition of [Au28(p-MBT)14(Hdppa)3](SO3CF3)2 (1 for short, Hdppa is N,N-bis(diphenylphosphino)amine, p-MBT is 4-methylbenzenethiolate) has been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that it has a rod-like face-centered cubic (fcc) Au22 kernel built from two interpenetrating bicapped cuboctahedral Au15 units. 1 features NIR luminescence with an emission maximum at 920 nm, and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is 12%, which is 30-fold of [Au21(m-MBT)12(Hdppa)2]SO3CF3 (2, m-MBT is 3-methylbenzenethiolate) with a similar composition and 60-fold of Au30S(S‑t‑Bu)18 with a similar structure. time-dependent DFT(TDDFT)calculations reveal that the luminescence of 1 is associated with the Au22 kernel. The small Stokes shift of 1 indicates that it has a very small excited state structural distortion, leading to high radiative decay rate (kr) probability. The emission of cluster 1 is a mixture of phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence(TADF), and the enhancement of the NIR emission is mainly due to the promotion of kr rather than the inhibition of knr. This work demonstrates that the metal kernel and the surface structure are both very important for cluster-based NIR luminescence materials.

Magneto-Luminescent Two-Dimensional Nanosheets of Gadolinium and Gold Nanocluster Assemblies with Surface Molecular Functionalization for White Light Emission

We report the formation of photoluminescent two-dimensional (2D) crystalline nanosheet assemblies of gadolinium ions and ligand-stabilized gold nanoclusters (Gd-Au NCs). Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction in conjunction with atomic force microscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy analyses substantiated the 2D nature of Gd-Au NC nanosheets. The optical and magnetic properties of the nanosheets were investigated by photoluminescence measurements and vibrating-sample magnetometry analyses. The so-formed crystalline product was further utilized to generate a synchronous tricolor (orange, green, and blue) emission from a single excitation wavelength through an inorganic surface complexation reaction. The independent emissions were tunable after ligand functionalization by acetylsalicylic acid and fluorescein on the Gd-Au NC assembly. Interestingly, the assembled superstructure with augmented quantum yield led to white light emission at λexc ≈ 325 nm with CIE of (0.34, 0.33) and CRI value of >85 in the liquid phase. Furthermore, the ability to modulate the luminescence properties through the surface complexation of the 2D nanosheets of Au NCs may bring about new avenues toward applications in light-emitting devices, sensing, and biomedical imaging.

Triple-Phosphorescent Gold Nanoclusters Enabled by Isomerization of Terminal Thiouracils in the Surface Motifs

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) hold great promise for expressing multipeak emission based on their well-defined total structure with diverse luminescent centers. Herein, we report the surface motif-dictated triple phosphorescence of Au NCs with dynamic color turning. The deprotonation-triggered isomerization of terminal thiouracils can evolve into a mutual transformation among their hierarchical motifs, thus serving a multipeak-emission expression with good tailoring. More importantly, the underlying electron transfer is thoroughly identified by excluding the radiative and nonradiative energy transfer, where electrons flow from the first phosphorescent state to the last two ones. The findings shed light on finely tailing motifs at the molecular level to motivate studies on customizable luminescence characteristics of metal NCs.

Concomitant Near-Infrared Photothermy and Photoluminescence of Rod-Shaped Au52(PET)32 and Au66(PET)38 Synthesized Concurrently

Gold nanoclusters exhibiting concomitant photothermy (PT) and photoluminescence (PL) under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation are rarely reported, and some fundamental issues remain unresolved for such materials. Herein, we concurrently synthesized two novel rod-shaped Au nanoclusters, Au52(PET)32 and Au66(PET)38 (PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate), and precisely revealed that their kernels were 4 × 4 × 6 and 5 × 4 × 6 face-centered cubic (fcc) structures, respectively, based on the numbers of Au layers in the [100], [010], and [001] directions. Following the structural growth mode from Au52(PET)32 to Au66(PET)38, we predicted six more novel nanoclusters. The concurrent synthesis provides rational comparison of the two nanoclusters on the stability, absorption, emission and photothermy, and reveals the aspect ratio-related properties. An interesting finding is that the two nanoclusters exhibit concomitant PT and PL under 785 nm light irradiation, and the PT and PL are in balance, which was explained by the qualitative evaluation of the radiative and non-radiative rates. The ligand effects on PT and PL were also investigated.

On the halide aggregation into the [Au4(PPh3)4]4+ cluster core. Insights from structural, optical and interaction energy analysis in [(Ph3PAu)4X2]2+ and [(Ph3PAu)4X]3+ species (X = Cl-, Br-, I-)

The aggregation of halide atoms into gold clusters offers an interesting scenario for the development of novel metal-based cavities for anion recognition and sensing applications. Thus, further understanding of the different contributing terms leading to efficient cluster-halide aggregation is relevant to guide their synthetic design. In this report, we evaluate the formation of [(Ph3PAu)4X2]2+ and [(Ph3PAu)4X]3+ species (X = Cl-, Br-, I-) in terms of different energy contributions underlying the stabilization of the cluster-halide interaction, and the expected UV-vis absorption profiles as a result of the variation in frontier orbital arrangements. Our results denote that a non-planar Au4 core shape enables enhanced halide aggregation, which is similar for Cl-, Br-, and I-, in comparison to the hypothetical planar Au4 counterparts. The electrostatic nature of the interaction involves a decreasing ion-dipole term along with the series, and for iodine species, higher-order electrostatic contributions become more relevant. Hence, the obtained results help in gaining further understanding of the different stabilizing and destabilizing contributions to suitable cluster-based cavities for the incorporation of different monoatomic anions.

Combined experimental and computational study of the photoabsorption of the monodoped and nondoped nanoclusters Au24Pt(SR)18, Ag24Pt(SR)18, and Ag25(SR)18

Assessing the accuracy of first-principles computational approaches is instrumental to predict electronic excitations in metal nanoclusters with quantitative confidence. Here we describe a validation study on the optical response of a set of monolayer-protected clusters (MPC). The photoabsorption spectra of Ag25(DMBT)18-, Ag24Pt(DMBT)182- and Au24Pt(SC4H9)18, where DMBT is 2,4-dimethylbenzenethiolate and SC4H9 is n-butylthiolate, have been obtained at low temperature and compared with accurate TDDFT calculations. An excellent match between theory and experiment, with typical deviations of less than 0.1 eV, was obtained, thereby validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed computational framework. Moreover, an analysis of the TDDFT simulations allowed us to ascribe all relevant spectral features to specific transitions between occupied/virtual orbital pairs. The doping effect of Pt on the optical response of these ultrasmall MPC systems was identified and discussed.

Intermediate Intercluster Bond Orders. Electronic Communication in Au38(SR)24 Superatomic Molecules

Ligand-protected gold clusters remain potential building blocks for envisaged molecular materials. The archetypal Au38(SR)24 cluster can be viewed as a robust template for the fusion of two Au25(SR)18 - cluster units, retaining a bi-icosahedral Au23 core. Via electrochemical properties, the overall charge state can be selectively tuned, enabling the access of 14 valence electron (ve) species featuring a single intercluster bond and nearby charge from -1 to +3, achieving related species bearing 15- to 11-ve with variable intercluster bond orders. Here, we explore the characteristics of intermediate intercluster bond orders in order to provide insights into the plausible electron communication between the constituent building blocks, with Au38(SR)24, as a representative template. Our results denote a small structural variation along -1 to +3 charge states, provided by the core-protecting ligand interaction, which is enhanced towards more oxidized species. The remaining unpaired electron from intermediate intercluster bond orders of 1.5 for Au38(SR)24 1-, 1.5 for Au38(SR)24 1+, and 2.5 for Au38(SR)24 3+, holds delocalized characteristics between the building block units, favoring electron communication for conductive and cooperative cluster aggregates. Such features are relevant for the formation of molecular electronic device applications, favoring the rationalization prior to engaging in explorative synthesis of larger ligand-protected cluster aggregates.

Two-Orders-of-Magnitude Enhancement of Photoinitiation Activity via a Simple Surface Engineering of Metal Nanoclusters

Development of high-performance photoinitiator is the key to enhance the printing speed, structure resolution and product quality in 3D laser printing. Here, to improve the printing efficiency of 3D laser nanoprinting, we investigate the underlying photochemistry of gold and silver nanocluster initiators under multiphoton laser excitation. Experimental results and DFT calculations reveal the high cleavage probability of the surface S-C bonds in gold and silver nanoclusters which generate multiple radicals. Based on this understanding, we design several alkyl-thiolated gold nanoclusters and achieve a more than two-orders-of-magnitude enhancement of photoinitiation activity, as well as a significant improvement in printing resolution and fabrication window. Overall, this work for the first time unveils the detailed radical formation pathways of gold and silver nanoclusters under multiphoton activation and substantially improves their photoinitiation sensitivity via surface engineering, which pushes the limit of the printing efficiency of 3D laser lithography.

Mechanism Insight into Metal Exchange between Au25(SR)18-/Ag25(SR)18- Clusters and Metal Ions from Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The metal exchange reaction has emerged as an efficient method to synthesize ligand-protected alloy nanoclusters with precise compositions and structure. However, the understanding of the mechanism of these metal exchange processes is quite limited. Herein, the dynamic process of metal exchange of Au25(SR)18- and Ag25(SR)18- (R = CH3) nanoclusters with metal ions (Au+, Ag+, Cu2+, Cu+, Cd2+, and Hg2+) is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Computational results unveiled a multifaceted nature of the metal exchange process, dictated by several variables, including thermodynamic stability, electrochemical activity, metal affinity to ligand, and the coordination mode of metal ions. As a result of these factors, metal ions may either directly exchange with Au or Ag atoms on the icosahedral core surface by a "knock-off" mechanism or be stably adsorbed at the core-motif interface of Au25(SR)18- and Ag25(SR)18- nanoclusters. Meanwhile, we also discovered that counterions can promote adsorbed Ag and Cu atoms to diffuse into the gold core. Finally, the driving force of the galvanic reduction and antigalvanic reduction reactions is discussed. The formation of a more stable core-doping product nanocluster is the major driving force of metal exchange reactions.

Dithiocarbonate-Protected Au25 Nanorods of a Chiral D5 Configuration and NIR-II Phosphorescence

Innovative surface-protecting ligands are in constant demand due to their crucial role in shaping the configuration, property, and application of gold nanoclusters. Here, the unprecedented O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (DTX)-stabilized atomically precise gold nanoclusters, [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Cl2]2+ (Au25DTX-Cl) and [Au25(PPh3)10(DTX)5Br2]2+ (Au25DTX-Br), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The introduction of bidentate DTX ligands not only endowed the gold nanocluster with unique staggered Au25 nanorod configurations but also generated the symmetry breaking from the D5d geometry of the Au25 kernels to the chiral D5 configuration of the Au25 molecules. The chirality of Au25 nanorods was notably revealed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and chiral separation was induced by employing chiral DTX ligands. The staggered configurations of Au25 nanorods, as opposed to eclipsed ones, were responsible for the large red shift in the emission wavelengths, giving rise to a promising near-infrared II (NIR-II, >1000 nm) phosphorescence. Furthermore, their performances in photocatalytic sulfide oxidation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions have been examined, and it has been demonstrated that the outstanding catalytic activity of gold nanoclusters is highly related to their stability.

Solvent-Mediated Hetero/Homo-Phase Crystallization of Copper Nanoclusters and Superatomic Kernel-Related NIR Phosphorescence

Atomically precise superatomic copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have been the subject of immense interest for their intriguing structures and diverse properties; nonetheless, the variable oxidation state of copper ions and complex solvation effects in wet synthesis systems pose significant challenges for comprehending their synthesis and crystallization mechanism. Herein, we present a solvent-mediated approach for the synthesis of two Cu NCs, namely, superatomic Cu26 and pure-Cu(I) Cu16. They initially formed as a hetero-phase and then separated as a homo-phase via modulating binary solvent composition. In situ UV/vis absorption and electrospray ionization mass spectra revealed that the solvent-mediated assembly was determined to be the underlying mechanism of hetero/homo-phase crystallization. Cu26 is a 2-electron superatom with a kernel-shell structure that includes a [Cu20Se12]4- shell and [Cu6]4+ kernel, containing two 1S jellium electrons. Conversely, Cu16 is a pure-Cu(I) Cu/Se nanocluster that features a [Cu16Se6]4+ core protected by extra dimercaptomaleonitrile ligands. Remarkably, Cu26 exhibits unique near-infrared phosphorescence (NIR PH) at 933 nm due to the presence of a superatomic kernel-related charge transfer state (3MM(Cu)CT). Overall, this work not only showcases the hetero/homo-phase crystallization of Cu NCs driven by a solvent-mediated assembly mechanism but also enables the rare occurrence of NIR PH within the 2-electron copper superatom family.

Site-Recognition-Induced Structural and Photoluminescent Evolution of the Gold-Pincer Nanocluster

The induced structural transformation provides an efficient way to precisely modulate the fine structures and the corresponding performance of gold nanoclusters, thus constituting one of the important research topics in cluster chemistry. However, the driving forces and mechanisms of these processes are still ambiguous in many cases, limiting further applications. In this work, based on the unique coordination mode of the pincer ligand-stabilized gold nanocluster Au8(PNP)4, we revealed the site-recognition mechanism for induced transformations of gold nanoclusters. The "open nitrogen sites" on the surface of the nanocluster interact with different inducers including organic compounds and metals and trigger the conversion of Au8(PNP)4 to Au13 and Au9Ag4 nanoclusters, respectively. Control experiments verified the site-recognition mechanism, and the femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed the electronic and photoluminescent evolution accompanied by the structural transformation.

Three species multiplexing of fluorescent dyes and gold nanoclusters recovered with fluorescence lifetime correlation spectroscopy

Biosensor applications often require the simultaneous detection of multiple analytes, with a clear need to go beyond the traditional multiplexing relying on distinct fluorescent dyes across the visible spectrum. Fluorescence lifetime correlation spectroscopy (FLCS) is a powerful approach taking advantage of the fluorescence lifetime information to separate the contributions of different fluorescent species with overlapping emission spectra. However, so far FLCS detection has been demonstrated only on binary mixtures of two fluorescent dyes, limiting its multiplexing capabilities. Here, we report the first quantitative FLCS measurements within a ternary mixture composed of three different fluorescent emitters with near-identical emission spectra. Two organic fluorescent dyes, Alexa Fluor 647 and CF640R, are combined with water-soluble Au18(SG)14 gold nanoclusters. Our experimental data establish that FLCS allows to accurately determine individual concentrations within intricate ternary mixtures. Another major aspect of interest concerns the assessment of the suitability of gold nanoclusters for FLCS multiplexing applications. With their microsecond lifetime and stable emission characteristics, gold nanoclusters add a valuable new aspect to the array of FLCS probes. Extending FLCS multiplexing beyond binary mixtures paves the way for further progress in the simultaneous highly parallel biosensing of multiple species.

Leveraging Radiation-triggered Metal Prodrug Activation Through Nanosurface Energy Transfer for Directed Radio-chemo-immunotherapy

Metal-based drugs currently dominate the field of chemotherapeutic agents; however, achieving the controlled activation of metal prodrugs remains a substantial challenge. Here, we propose a universal strategy for the radiation-triggered activation of metal prodrugs via nanosurface energy transfer (NSET). The core-shell nanoplatform (Ru-GNC) is composed of gold nanoclusters (GNC) and ruthenium (Ru)-containing organic-inorganic hybrid coatings. Upon X-ray irradiation, chemotherapeutic Ru (II) complexes were released in a controlled manner through a unique NSET process involving the transfer of photoelectron energy from the radiation-excited Ru-GNCs to the Ru-containing hybrid layer. In contrast to the traditional radiation-triggered activation of prodrugs, such an NSET-based system ensures that the reactive species in the tumor microenvironment are present in sufficient quantity and are not easily quenched. Additionally, ultrasmall Ru-GNCs preferably target mitochondria and profoundly disrupt the respiratory chain upon irradiation, leading to radiosensitization by generating abundant reactive oxygen species. Consequently, Ru-GNC-directed radiochemotherapy induces immunogenic cell death, resulting in significant therapeutic outcomes when combined with the programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) checkpoint blockade. This NSET strategy represents a breakthrough in designing radiation-triggered nanoplatforms for metal-prodrug-mediated cancer treatment in an efficient and controllable manner.

A thiolated copper-hydride nanocluster with chloride bridging as a catalyst for carbonylative C-N coupling of aryl amines under mild conditions: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Atomically precise copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs), an emerging class of nanomaterials, have garnered significant attention owing to their versatile core-shell architecture and their potential applications in catalytic reactions. In this study, we present a straightforward synthesis strategy for [Cu29(StBu)12(PPh3)4Cl6H10][BF4] (Cu29) NCs and explore their catalytic activity in the carbonylative C-N coupling reaction involving aromatic amines and N-heteroarenes with dialkyl azodicarboxylates. Through a combination of experimental investigations and density functional theory studies, we elucidate the radical mechanisms at play. The crucial step in the catalytic process is identified as the decomposition of diisopropyl azodicarboxylates on the surface of Cu29 NCs, leading to the generation of oxyacyl radicals and the liberation of nitrogen gas. Subsequently, an oxyacyl radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from aniline, initiating the formation of an aminyl radical. Finally, the aminyl radical reacts with another oxyacyl radical, culminating in the synthesis of the desired carbamate product. This detailed analysis provides insights into the intricate catalytic pathways of Cu29 NCs, shedding light on their potential for catalyzing carbonylative C-N coupling reactions.

Tiara-like Hexanuclear Nickel-Platinum Alloy Nanocluster

Tiara-like metal nanoclusters (TNCs) have attracted a great deal of attention because of their high stability and easy synthesis under atmospheric conditions as well as their high activity in various catalytic reactions. Alloying is one of the methods that can be used to control the physicochemical properties of nanoclusters, but few studies have reported on alloy TNCs. In this study, we synthesized alloy TNCs [NixPt6-x(PET)12, where x = 1-5 and PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate] consisting of thiolate, nickel (Ni), and platinum (Pt). We further evaluated the stability, geometric structure, and electronic structure by high-performance liquid chromatography and density functional theory calculations. The results revealed that NixPt6-x(PET)12 has a distorted structure and is therefore less stable than single-metal TNCs.

Visible to NIR-II Photoluminescence of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters

Atomically precise gold nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a new class of precision materials and attracted wide interest in recent years. One of the unique properties of such nanoclusters pertains to their photoluminescence (PL), for it can widely span visible to near-infrared-I and -II wavelengths (NIR-I/II), and even beyond 1700 nm by manipulating the size, structure, and composition. The current research efforts focus on the structure-PL correlation and the development of strategies for raising the PL quantum yields, which is nontrivial when moving from the visible to the near-infrared wavelengths, especially in the NIR-II regions. This review summarizes the recent progress in the field, including i) the types of PL observed in gold NCs such as fluorescence, phosphorescence, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, as well as dual emission; ii) some effective strategies that are devised to improve the PL quantum yield (QY) of gold NCs, such as heterometal doping, surface rigidification, and core phonon engineering, with double-digit QYs for the NIR PL on the horizons; and iii) the applications of luminescent gold NCs in bioimaging, photosensitization, and optoelectronics. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities for future research are highlighted.

A concise guide to chemical reactions of atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters

Nanoparticles (NPs) with atomic precision, known as nanoclusters (NCs), are an emerging field in materials science in view of their fascinating structure-property relationships. Ultrasmall noble metal NPs have molecule-like properties that make them fundamentally unique compared with their plasmonic counterparts and bulk materials. In this review, we present a comprehensive account of the chemistry of monolayer-protected atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters with a focus on the chemical reactions, their diversity, associated kinetics, and implications. To begin with, we briefly review the history of the evolution of such precision materials. Then the review explores the diverse chemistry of noble metal nanoclusters, including ligand exchange reactions, ligand-induced structural transformations, and reactions with metal ions, metal thiolates, and halocarbons. Just as molecules do, these precision materials also undergo intercluster reactions in solution. Supramolecular forces between these systems facilitate the creation of well-defined hierarchical assemblies, composites, and hybrid materials. We conclude the review with a future perspective and scope of such chemistry.

Unveiling the photoluminescence dynamics of gold nanoclusters with fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have captured significant interest for their photoluminescent properties; however, their rapid photodynamics remain elusive while probed by ensemble-averaging spectroscopy techniques. To address this challenge, we use fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) to uncover the photoluminescence dynamics of colloidal Au18(SG)14 nanoclusters. Our FCS analysis reveals the photoluminescence (PL) brightness per nanocluster, elucidating the impact of photoexcitation saturation and ligand interactions. Unlike DNA-encapsulated silver nanoclusters, their gold counterparts notably exhibit minimal blinking, with moderate amplitudes and 200 μs characteristic times. Our data also clearly reveal the occurrence of photon antibunching in the PL emission, showcasing the quantum nature of the PL process, with each AuNC acting as an individual quantum source. Using zero-mode waveguide nanoapertures, we achieve a 16-fold enhancement of the PL brightness of individual AuNCs. This constitutes an important enabling proof-of-concept for tailoring emission properties through nanophotonics. Overall, our study bridges the gap between ensemble-averaged techniques and single-molecule spectroscopy, offering new insights into AuNC photodynamics for biosensing and imaging applications.

Reduction-Oxidation Cascade Strategy for Reforming a Au13-Kerneled Gold Thiolate Nanocluster

Gold nanoclusters protected by thiolate ligands are ideal models for investigating the structure-property correlation of nanomaterals. Introducing relatively weak coordinating ligands into gold thiolate nanoclusters and thus reforming their structures is beneficial for further releasing their activities. However, controlling the selectivity of the process is a challenging task. In this work, we report a cascade strategy for deeply and purposefully reforming the structures of gold thiolate nanoclusters, exemplified by a Au13-kerneled Au23 nanocluster. Specifically, weakly coordinated triphenylphosphine was utilized to reduce (activate) the surface of Au23, enabling its further structural reformation by the following oxidation step. A structurally distinctive Au20 nanocluster was obtained based on this reduction-oxidation cascade strategy. Mechanism studies reveal that both the reduction and oxidation steps and their working sequence are critical for the transformation. Theoretical and experimental results all indicate that the deep structural reformation results in the evolution of the electronic and photoluminescent properties of the gold thiolate nanocluster.

pH-Responsive Near-Infrared Emitting Gold Nanoclusters

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores with pH-responsive properties suggest merits in biological analyses. This work establishes a general and effective method to obtain pH-responsive NIR emissive gold nanoclusters by introducing aliphatic tertiary amine (TA) groups into the ligands. Computational study suggests that the pH-responsive NIR emission is associated with electronic structure change upon protonation and deprotonation of TA groups. Photo-induced electron transfer between deprotonated TA groups and the surface Au-S motifs of gold nanoclusters can disrupt the radiative transitions and thereby decrease the photoluminescence intensity in basic environments (pH=7-11). By contrast, protonated TA groups curb the electron transfer and restore the photoluminescence intensity in acidic environments (pH=4-7). The pH-responsive NIR-emitting gold nanoclusters serve as a specific and sensitive probe for the lysosomes in the cells, offering non-invasive emissions without interferences from intracellular autofluorescence.

A DFT study for improving the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells by designing symmetric non-fullerene acceptors by quantum chemical modification on pre-existed LC81 molecule

Minimizing the energy loss and improving the open circuit voltage of organic solar cells is still a primary concern for scientists working in this field. With the aim to enhance the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells by minimizing energy loss and improving open circuit voltage, seven new acceptor molecules (LC1-LC7) are presented in this work. These molecules are designed by modifying the terminal acceptors of pre-existed "LC81" molecule based on an indacinodithiophene (IDT) fused core. The end-group modification approach is very fruitful in ameliorating the efficacy and optoelectric behavior of OSCs. The newly developed molecules presented remarkable improvements in performance-related parameters and optoelectronic properties. Among all designed molecules, LC7 exhibited the highest absorption maxima (λmax = 869 nm) with the lowest band-gap (1.79 eV), lowest excitation energy (Ex = 1.42 eV), lowest binding energy, and highest excited state lifetime (0.41 ns). The newly designed molecules LC2, LC3, and LC4 exhibited remarkably improved Voc that was 1.84 eV, 1.82 eV, and 1.79 eV accordingly, compared to the LC81 molecule with Voc of 1.74 eV LC2 molecule showed significant improvement in fill factor compared to the previously presented LC81 molecule. LC2, LC6, and LC7 showed a remarkable reduction in energy loss by showing Eloss values of 0.26 eV, 0.18 eV, and 0.25 eV than LC81 molecule (0.37 eV). These findings validate the supremacy of these developed molecules (especially LC2) as potential components of future OSCs.

Understanding the Ligand-Dependent Photoluminescent Mechanism in Small Alkynyl-Protected Gold Nanoclusters

Alkynyl-protected gold clusters have recently gained attention because they are more structurally versatile than their thiolate-protected counterparts. Despite their flexibility, however, a higher photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY) has been observed experimentally compared to that of organically soluble thiolate-protected clusters. Previous experiments have shown that changing the organic ligand, or R group, in these clusters does not affect the geometric or electronic properties of the core, leading to a similar absorption profile. This article serves as a follow-up to those experiments in which the geometric, optical, and photoluminescent (PL) properties of Au22(ETP)18 are pieced together to find the photoluminescence mechanism. These properties are then compared between Au22(C≡CR)18 clusters where the ligand is changed from R = ETP to PA and ET (ETP = 3-ethynylthiophene, PA = phenylacetylene, and ET = 3-ethynyltoluene). As the theoretical results do not reproduce the same absorption profile among the different ligands as in the experiment, this article also presents a supplementary benchmark of the geometric and optical properties among the three ligands for different levels of theory. The calculations show that the photoluminescence mechanism with the ETP ligand results in ligand-to-metal-to-metal charge transfer (LMMCT), while PA and ET are likely a result of core-dominated fluorescence. The changes are the result of the Au(I) ring atoms as well as how the aromatic groups are connected to the cluster. Additionally, dispersion, solvent, and polarization functions are all important to creating an accurate chemical environment, but the most useful tool in these calculations is the use of a long-range-corrected exchange-correlation functional.

Thermal Stability and Electronic Properties of N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Protected Au13 Nanocluster and Phosphine-Protected Analogues

Despite significant advances in manufacturing atomically precise gold nanoclusters protected by various ligands, there is a limited understanding of the thermal stability dynamics and electronic properties of ligand effects. We conducted ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations on the well-characterized [Au13(NHCMe)9Cl3]2+ nanocluster and its counterpart [Au13(PMe3)9Cl3]2+ cluster to evaluate the thermal stability induced by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and phosphine ligands. The result shows that under vacuum conditions, [Au13(PMe3)9Cl3]2+ is more stable than [Au13(NHCMe)9Cl3]2+, and both lead to metal nucleation decomposition, breaking into the Au12 fragment and L-Au-Cl (L = NHCMe or PMe3) complexes eventually. The optical and electronic properties of these two clusters change significantly due to ligand alteration. Furthermore, we have designed a novel [Au13(NHCMe)(PMe3)8Cl3]2+ cluster coprotected by NHC and phosphine ligands, displaying higher thermal stability than the homoligand protected [Au13(NHCMe)9Cl3]2+ and [Au13(PMe3)9Cl3]2+. Our hypothetical species are an interesting model for nanostructured materials, facilitating the experimental exploration of cluster synthesis and catalytic applications.

Precision nanoengineering for functional self-assemblies across length scales

As nanotechnology continues to push the boundaries across disciplines, there is an increasing need for engineering nanomaterials with atomic-level precision for self-assembly across length scales, i.e., from the nanoscale to the macroscale. Although molecular self-assembly allows atomic precision, extending it beyond certain length scales presents a challenge. Therefore, the attention has turned to size and shape-controlled metal nanoparticles as building blocks for multifunctional colloidal self-assemblies. However, traditionally, metal nanoparticles suffer from polydispersity, uncontrolled aggregation, and inhomogeneous ligand distribution, resulting in heterogeneous end products. In this feature article, I will discuss how virus capsids provide clues for designing subunit-based, precise, efficient, and error-free self-assembly of colloidal molecules. The atomically precise nanoscale proteinic subunits of capsids display rigidity (conformational and structural) and patchy distribution of interacting sites. Recent experimental evidence suggests that atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters display an anisotropic distribution of ligands and patchy ligand bundles. This enables symmetry breaking, consequently offering a facile route for two-dimensional colloidal crystals, bilayers, and elastic monolayer membranes. Furthermore, inter-nanocluster interactions mediated via the ligand functional groups are versatile, offering routes for discrete supracolloidal capsids, composite cages, toroids, and macroscopic hierarchically porous frameworks. Therefore, engineered nanoparticles with atomically precise structures have the potential to overcome the limitations of molecular self-assembly and large colloidal particles. Self-assembly allows the emergence of new optical properties, mechanical strength, photothermal stability, catalytic efficiency, quantum yield, and biological properties. The self-assembled structures allow reproducible optoelectronic properties, mechanical performance, and accurate sensing. More importantly, the intrinsic properties of individual nanoclusters are retained across length scales. The atomically precise nanoparticles offer enormous potential for next-generation functional materials, optoelectronics, precision sensors, and photonic devices.

Towards structural optimization of gold nanoclusters with quantum Monte Carlo

We study the prospects of using quantum Monte Carlo techniques (QMC) to optimize the electronic wavefunctions and atomic geometries of gold compounds. Complex gold nanoclusters are widely studied for diverse biochemical applications, but the dynamic correlation and relativistic effects in gold set the bar high for reliable, predictive simulation methods. Here we study selected ground state properties of few-atom gold clusters by using density functional theory (DFT) and various implementations of the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and diffusion Monte Carlo. We show that the QMC methods mitigate the exchange-correlation (XC) approximation made in the DFT approach: the average QMC results are more accurate and significantly more consistent than corresponding DFT results based on different XC functionals. Furthermore, we use demonstrate structural optimization of selected thiolated gold clusters with between 1 and 3 gold atoms using VMC forces. The optimization workflow is demonstrably consistent, robust, and its computational cost scales with nb, where b < 3 and n is the system size. We discuss the implications of these results while laying out steps for further developments.

Clarifying the Electronic Structure of Anion-Templated Silver Nanoclusters by Optical Absorption Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculation

Electronic structures of anion-templated silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) are not well understood compared to conventional, template-free Ag NCs. In this study, we synthesized three new anion-templated Ag NCs, namely [S@Ag17(S-4CBM)15(PPh3)5]0, [S@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]0, and [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8][PPh4], where S-4CBM = 4-chlorobenzene methanethiolate, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealed that they have S@Ag6, S@Ag10, and Cl@Ag10 cores, respectively. Investigation of their electronic structures by optical spectroscopy and theoretical calculations elucidated the following unique features: (1) their electronic structures are different from those of template-free Ag NCs described by the superatomic concept; (2) optical absorption in the range of 550-400 nm for S2--templated Ag NCs is attributed to the charge transitions from S2--templated Ag-cage orbitals to the s-shaped orbital in the S2- moiety; (3) the Cl--templated Ag NCs can be viewed as [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]0[PPh4]0 rather than the ion pair [Cl@Ag18(S-4CBM)16(PPh3)8]-[PPh4]+; and (4) singlet-coupled singly occupied orbitals are involved in the optical absorption of the Cl--templated Ag NC.

-SR removal or -R removal? A mechanistic revisit on the puzzle of ligand etching of Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters during electrocatalysis

Accurate identification of active sites is highly desirable for elucidation of the reaction mechanism and development of efficient catalysts. Despite the promising catalytic performance of thiolated metal nanoclusters (NCs), their actual catalytic sites remain elusive. Traditional first-principles calculations and experimental observations suggested dealkylated S and dethiolated metal, respectively, to be the active centers. However, the real kinetic origin of thiolate etching during the electrocatalysis of NCs is still puzzling. Herein, we conducted advanced first-principles calculations and electrochemical/spectroscopic experiments to unravel the electrochemical etching kinetics of thiolate ligands in prototype Au25(SCH3)18 NC. The electrochemical processes are revealed to be spontaneously facilitated by dethiolation (i.e., desorption of -SCH3), forming the free HSCH3 molecule after explicitly including the solvent effect and electrode potential. Thus, exposed under-coordinated Au atoms, rather than the S atoms, serve as the real catalytic sites. The thermodynamically preferred Au-S bond cleavage arises from the selective attack of H from proton/H2O on the S atom under suitable electrochemical bias due to the spatial accessibility and the presence of S lone pair electrons. Decrease of reduction potential promotes the proton attack on S and significantly accelerates the kinetics of Au-S bond breakage irrespective of the pH of the medium. Our theoretical results are further verified by the experimental electrochemical and spectroscopic data. At more negative electrode potentials, the number of -SR ligands decreased with concomitant increase of the vibrational intensity of S-H bonds. These findings together clarify the atomic-level activation mechanism on the surface of Au25(SR)18 NCs.

Elucidating the Near-Infrared Photoluminescence Mechanism of Homometal and Doped M25(SR)18 Nanoclusters

More than a decade of research on the photoluminescence (PL) of classic Au25(SR)18 and its doped nanoclusters (NCs) still leaves many fundamental questions unanswered due to the complex electron dynamics. Here, we revisit the homogold Au25 (ligands omitted hereafter) and doped NCs, as well as the Ag25 and doped ones, for a comparative study to disentangle the influencing factors and elucidate the PL mechanism. We find that the strong electron-vibration coupling in Au25 leads to weak PL in the near-infrared region (∼1000 nm, quantum yield QY = 1% in solution at room temperature). Heteroatom doping of Au25 with a single Cd or Hg atom strengthens the coupling of the exciton with staple vibrations but reduces the coupling with the core breathing and quadrupolar modes. The QYs of the three MAu24 NCs (M = Hg, Au, and Cd) follow a linear relation with their PL lifetimes, suggesting a mechanism of suppressed nonradiative decay in PL enhancement. In contrast, the weaker electron-vibration coupling in Ag25 leads to higher PL (QY = 3.5%), and single Au atom doping further leads to a 5× enhancement of the radiative rate and a suppression of nonradiative decay rate (i.e., twice the PL lifetime of Ag25) in AuAg24 (hence, QY 35%), but doping more Au atoms results in gold distribution to staple motifs and thus triggering of strong electron-vibration coupling as in the MAu24 NCs, hence, counteracting the radiative enhancement effect and giving rise to only 5% QY for AuxAg25-x (x = 3-10). The obtained insights will provide guidance for the design of metal NCs with high PL for lighting, sensing, and optoelectronic applications.

Au16 Cd16 (SC6 H11 )20 : A Glance at Structure-Property Relationship

Doping Cd atom(s) into gold clusters is very promising in both theoretical study and practical applications. However, it has long been a challenge to synthesize heavily Cd-doped AuCd bimetallic clusters and thereby reveal their structure-property correlations. Herein a novel AuCd bimetallic cluster: Au16 Cd16 (SC6 H11 )20 (SC6 H11 denotes deprotonated cyclohexanethiol) with a Cd to Au atomic ratio of 1:1 is reported. The precise structure of the cluster determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction demonstrates that it has a unique hexatetrahedron Au14 core and a distinctive shell. Intriguingly, due to the special protecting motifs, the cluster exhibits high stability in various conditions studied, indicating that the geometric structure is crucial in determining the stability of the cluster. Most importantly, the photothermal property of the cluster has been investigated in comparison with those of M13 -kernel (M denotes metal atoms) clusters, and the results imply that the compactness and the Cd atom doping of the core play important roles in dictating the photothermal effect of the cluster. The authors believe that this work will provide some ideas for the rational design of clusters with high stability and excellent photothermal property.

Mechanistic Study of the Hydride Migration-Induced Reversible Isomerization in Au22(SR)15H Isomers

Unraveling the evolution mechanism of metal nanoclusters is of great importance in understanding the formation and evolution of metallic condensed matters. In this work, the specific evolution process between a pair of gold nanocluster (Au NC) isomers is completely revealed by introducing hydride ligands to simplify the research system. A hydride-containing Au NC, Au₂₂(SR)₁₅H, was synthesized by kinetic control, and the positions of the hydrides were then confirmed by combining X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and DFT calculations. Importantly, a reversible structural isomerization was found to occur on this Au₂₂(SR)₁₅H. By combining the crystal structures and theoretical calculations, the focus was placed on the hydride-binding site, and a [Au-H] migration mechanism of this isomerization process is clearly shown. Furthermore, this [Au-H] migration mechanism is confirmed by the subsequent capture and structural determination of theoretically predicted intermediates. This work provides insight into the dynamic behavior of hydride ligands in nanoclusters and a strategy to study the evolution mechanism of nanoclusters by taking the hydride ligand as the breakthrough point.

Interrupted DNA and Slow Silver Cluster Luminescence

A DNA-silver cluster conjugate is a hierarchical chromophore with a partly reduced silver core embedded within the DNA nucleobases that are covalently linked by the phosphodiester backbone. Specific sites within a polymeric DNA can be targeted to spectrally tune the silver cluster. Here, the repeated (C₂A)₆ strand is interrupted with a thymine, and the resulting (C₂A)₂-T-(C₂A)₄ forms only Ag₁₀⁶⁺, a chromophore with both prompt (∼1 ns) green and sustained (∼10² μs) red luminescence. Thymine is an inert placeholder that can be removed, and the two fragments (C₂A)₂ and (C₂A)₄ also produce the same Ag₁₀⁶⁺ adduct. In relation to (C₂A)₂T(C₂A)₄, the (C₂A)₂ + (C₂A)₄ pair is distinguished because the red Ag₁₀⁶⁺ luminescence is ∼6× lower, relaxes ∼30% faster, and is quenched ∼2× faster with O₂. These differences suggest that a specific break in the phosphodiester backbone can regulate how a contiguous vs broken scaffold wraps and better protects its cluster adduct.

Ligand effect on switching the rate-determining step of water oxidation in atomically precise metal nanoclusters

The ligand effects of atomically precise metal nanoclusters on electrocatalysis kinetics have been rarely revealed. Herein, we employ atomically precise Au₂₅ nanoclusters with different ligands (i.e., para-mercaptobenzoic acid, 6-mercaptohexanoic acid, and homocysteine) as paradigm electrocatalysts to demonstrate oxygen evolution reaction rate-determining step switching through ligand engineering. Au₂₅ nanoclusters capped by para-mercaptobenzoic acid exhibit a better performance with nearly 4 times higher than that of Au₂₅ NCs capped by other two ligands. We deduce that para-mercaptobenzoic acid with a stronger electron-withdrawing ability establishes more partial positive charges on Au(I) (i.e., active sites) for facilitating feasible adsorption of OH^- in alkaline media. X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and theoretical study indicate a profound electron transfer from Au(I) to para-mercaptobenzoic acid. The Tafel slope and in situ Raman spectroscopy suggest different ligands trigger different rate-determining step for these Au₂₅ nanoclusters. The mechanistic insights reported here can add to the acceptance of atomically precise metal nanoclusters as effective electrocatalysts.

General Method to Synthesize Highly Stable Nanoclusters via Pickering-Stabilized Microemulsions

The ability to not only control but also maintain the well-defined size of nanoclusters is key to a scientific understanding as well as their practical application. Here, we report a synthetic protocol to prepare and stabilize nanoclusters of different metals and even metal salts. The approach builds on a Pickering stabilization effect inside a microemulsion system. We prove that the emulsion interface plays a critical role in the formation of nanoclusters, which are encapsulated in situ into a silica matrix. The resulting nanocapsule is characterized by a central cavity and a porous shell composed of a matrix of both silica and nanoclusters. This structure endows the nanoclusters simultaneously with high thermal stability, good biocompatibility, and excellent photostability, making them well suited for fundamental studies and practical applications ranging from materials chemistry, catalysis, and optics to bioimaging.

Intermediate Silver Doping of Au25(SR)18: Variation of Electronic, Optical, and Chiroptical Properties along Au25-xAgx(SH)18- (x = 0-12) Stoichiometry from DFT Calculations

The silver analogue of the prominent Au₂₅(SR)₁₈ nanocluster reveals the possibility of finding "gold"-like behavior despite their different nature, in addition to the common features among molecular AgNP. Herein, we explore the effect of successive additions of silver atoms reaching an intermediate Ag/Au doping ratio where the parent gold cluster exhibits properties from both elements. Our results show a more favorable situation as the Ag/Au ratio increases along the Au_25-xAg_x(SH)₁₈^- (x = 0-12) clusters, with structural distortions mainly centered at the ligand-protected shell. The calculated optical spectrum shows that from the Au₁₉Ag₆ species, a plasmon-like peak appears along species with a doping ratio above 25%, where all the silver atoms are located within the M₁₂ icosahedron. In addition, the chiral properties were explored, showing mild optical activity from the calculated circular dichroism spectra due to the distorted ligand-shell avoiding a centrosymmetric structure. Thus, an intermediate doping ratio ascribed to a specific structural layer can recover inherent properties to both elements in the binary Au_25-xAg_x(SH)₁₈^- series, suggesting the possibility of having clusters with dual properties at a certain degree of element exchange. This can be useful for further exploration theoretically and synthetically toward different and larger-nuclearity clusters.

A first glance into mixed phosphine-stibine moieties as protecting ligands for gold clusters

Atomically precise gold clusters have attracted considerable research interest as their tunable structure-property relationships have resulted in widespread applications, from sensing and biomedicine to energetic materials and catalysis. In this article, the synthesis and optical properties of a novel [Au₆(SbP₃)₂][PF₆]₂ cluster are reported. Despite the lack of spherical symmetry in the core, the cluster shows exceptional thermal and chemical stability. Detailed structural attributes and optical properties are evaluated experimentally and theoretically. This, to the best of our knowledge, is the first report of a gold cluster protected via synergistic multidentate coordination of stibine (Sb) and phosphine moieties (P). To further show that the latter moieties give a set of unique properties that differs from monodentate phosphine-protected [Au₆(PPh₃)₆]²⁺, geometric structure, electronic structure, and optical properties are analyzed theoretically. In addition, this report also demonstrates the critical role of overall-ligand architecture in stabilizing mixed ligand-protected gold clusters.

Regulating the Electronic Structure of Metal Nanoclusters by Longitudinal Single-Dithiolate Substitution

It is significant but challenging to understand the property evolution of metal nanoclusters by orientated regulation of the electronic structure. Previous research has demonstrated that the optical properties of metal nanoclusters with anisotropic structures are greatly impacted by their longitudinal electronic structure. However, the manipulation of optical properties of metal nanoclusters by regulating their electronic structure through longitudinal dithiolate substitutions has not yet been reported. In this study, we first achieved the longitudinal single-dithiolate replacement of metal nanoclusters and obtained two novel nanoclusters: Au₂₈(SPh-^tBu)₁₈(SCH₂SCH₂S) and Au₂₈(SPh-^tBu)₁₈(SCH₂CH₂CH₂S). Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrated the regulation of the electronic structure (dipole moment) in the z (longitudinal) and x directions, resulting in absorption redshift and photoluminescence (polarity) enhancement. These findings not only deepen the understanding of the property-electronic structure correlation of metal nanoclusters but also provide guidance for their subtle property tuning.

Two triplet emitting states in one emitter: Near-infrared dual-phosphorescent Au20 nanocluster

Intrinsic dual-emission (DE) of gold nanoclusters in the near-infrared (NIR) are fascinating for fundamental importance and practical applications, but their synthesis remains a formidable challenge and sophisticated excited-state processes make elucidating DE mechanisms much more arduous. Here, we report an all-alkynyl-protected gold nanocluster, Au20, showing a prolate Au₁₂ tri-octahedral kernel surrounded by two Au₂(CZ-PrA)₃ dimers, four Au(CZ-PrA)₂ monomers, and two CZ-PrA^- bridges. Au20 exhibits distinguished photophysical properties including NIR DE at 820 and 940 nm, microsecond radiative relaxation, and 6.26% photoluminescent quantum yield at ambient environment in nondegassed solution. Combining systematic studies on steady/transient spectroscopy and theoretical calculation, we identified two triplet charge transfer (CT) states, ligand-to-kernel and kernel-based CT states as DE origins. Furthermore, this NIR DE exhibits highly independent and sensitive response to surrounding environments, which well coincide with its mechanism. This work not only provides a substantial structure model to understand a distinctive DE mechanism but also motivates the further development of NIR DE materials.

Key factors for connecting silver-based icosahedral superatoms by vertex sharing

Metal nanoclusters composed of noble elements such as gold (Au) or silver (Ag) are regarded as superatoms. In recent years, the understanding of the materials composed of superatoms, which are often called superatomic molecules, has gradually progressed for Au-based materials. However, there is still little information on Ag-based superatomic molecules. In the present study, we synthesise two di-superatomic molecules with Ag as the main constituent element and reveal the three essential conditions for the formation and isolation of a superatomic molecule comprising two Ag_13-xM_x structures (M = Ag or other metal; x = number of M) connected by vertex sharing. The effects of the central atom and the type of bridging halogen on the electronic structure of the resulting superatomic molecule are also clarified in detail. These findings are expected to provide clear design guidelines for the creation of superatomic molecules with various properties and functions.

Cadmium-Doped and Pincer Ligand-Modified Gold Nanocluster for Catalytic KA2 Reaction

A gold nanocluster Au₁₇ Cd₂ (PNP)₂ (SR)₁₂ (PNP=2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine, SR=4-MeOPhS) consisting of an icosahedral Au₁₃ kernel, two Au₂ CdS₆ staple motifs, and two PNP pincer ligands has been designed, synthesized and well characterized. This cadmium and PNP pincer ligand co-modified gold nanocluster showed high catalytic efficiency in the KA² reaction, featuring high TON, mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope as well as catalyst recyclability. Comparison of the catalytic performance between Au₁₇ Cd₂ (PNP)₂ (SR)₁₂ and the structurally similar single cadmium (or PNP) modified gold nanoclusters demonstrates that the co-existence of the cadmium and PNP on the surface is crucial for the high catalytic activity of the gold nanocluster. This work would be enlightening for developing efficient catalysts for cascade reactions and discovering the catalytic potential of metal nanoclusters in organic transformations.

Spiers Memorial Lecture: Nanoalloys of multiple components; the road to advance the field and experimental and theoretical challenges

The field of nanoalloys has been advancing at a rapid pace in the last two decades. Many new characterization methods and theoretical advances have produced a substantial knowledge of the nanoalloys' properties and structure. Most of the work has been limited to binary alloys. A path forward for the field will be the study of nanoalloys with three or more metals. Adding new components will produce new properties and possibly more fabrication controls. In this paper, we will discuss the challenges that will arise in multi-metallic nanoalloys. We will show that entropy and twin boundaries play a dominant role in multi-metallic alloys.

A bimetallic Ag15Cu12(S-c-C6H11)18(CH3COO)3 nanocluster featuring an irregular Ag12 kernel

Here, we report the synthesis and atomic structure of a Ag₁₅Cu₁₂(SR)₁₈(CH₃COO)₃·(C₆H₁₄) nanocluster (Ag₁₅Cu₁₂ for short, SR denotes cyclohexanethiol), confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that Ag₁₅Cu₁₂ consisted of an irregular Ag₁₂ core, stabilized by the Ag₃Cu₁₂(SR)₁₈(CH₃COO)₃ shell. The shell consisted of two nearly planar Cu₃(SR)₆ moieties, three monomeric [-SR-Ag-SR-] units and three Cu₂(CH₃COO) staples. Furthermore, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) simulation was performed to interpret the optical absorption features of Ag₁₅Cu₁₂. Overall, this work will broaden and deepen the understanding of Ag-Cu alloy nanoclusters.

Origins of the pH-Responsive Photoluminescence of Peptide-Functionalized Au Nanoclusters

Ultrasmall peptide-protected gold nanoclusters are a promising class of bioresponsive material exhibiting pH-sensitive photoluminescence. We present a theoretical insight into the effect peptide-ligand environment has on pH-responsive fluorescence, with the aim of enhancing the rational design of gold nanoclusters for bioapplications. Employing a hybrid quantum/classical computational methodology, we systematically calculate deprotonation free energies of N-terminal cysteine amine groups in proximity to the inherently fluorescent core of Au₂₅(Peptide)₁₈ nanoclusters. We find that subtle changes in hexapeptide sequence alter the electrostatic environment and significantly shift the conventional N-terminal amine pK_a expected for amino acids free-in-solution. Our findings provide an insight into how the deprotonation equilibrium of N-terminal amine and side chain carboxyl groups cooperatively respond to solution pH changes, explaining the experimentally observed, yet elusive, pH-responsive fluorescence of peptide-functionalized Au₂₅ clusters.

Structure and assembly of a hexanuclear AuNi bimetallic nanocluster

An Au₄Ni₂ nanocluster containing a square-planar [-PPh₂-Au-S-Au-]₂ ring and two nickel-pincer arms is reported here. Abundant intra- and inter-cluster noncovalent interactions promote the assembly of the nanocluster into a porous framework material. The assembly-dependent unique solubility and photoluminescence were also investigated.

Guiding the High-Yield Synthesis of NHC-Ligated Gold Nanoclusters by 19F NMR Spectroscopy

Optimizing the synthesis of atomically precise metal nanoclusters by virtue of molecular tools is highly desirable but quite challenging. Herein we report how ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy can be used to guide the high-yield synthesis of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized gold nanoclusters. In spite of little difference, ¹⁹F NMR signals of fluoro-incorporated NHCs (^FNHC) are highly sensitive to the tiny change in their surrounding chemical environments with different N-substituents, metals, or anions, thus providing a convenient strategy to discriminate species in reaction mixtures. By using ¹⁹F NMR, we first disclosed that the one-pot reduction of ^FNHC-Au-X (X is halide) yields multiple compounds, including cluster compounds and also a large amount of highly stable [Au(^FNHC)₂]⁺ byproduct. The detailed quantitative ¹⁹F NMR analyses over the reductive synthesis of NHC-stabilized Au nanoclusters reveal that the formation of the di-NHC complex is deleterious to the high-yield synthesis of NHC-stabilized Au nanoclusters. With the understanding, the reaction kinetic was then slowed by controlling the reduction rate to achieve the high yield of a [Au₂₄(^FNHC)₁₄X₂H₃]³⁺ nanocluster with a unique structure. The strategy demonstrated in this work is expected to provide an effective tool to guide the high-yield synthesis of organic ligand-stabilized metal nanoclusters.

Stabilization of {Ag20(StBu)10} and {Ag19(StBu)10} Toroidal Complexes in DMSO: HPLC-ICP-AES, PL, and Structural Studies

The presence of DMSO provides a unique ability to stabilize silver toroidal complexes in the direct reaction between AgStBu and AgNO3 at 80 °C. Slow cooling results in large crystals of [NO3@Ag19.2(StBu)10(DMSO)5.2(NO3)8.2]·3DMSO (1), which were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis. The crystal structure contains both {Ag20(StBu)10} and {Ag19(StBu)10} clusters. The solution of these material in DMSO was studied with HPLC techniques, which demonstrated the presence of both complexes in solution. The use of [SiW12O40]4– as counter anion gives crystals of a double complex salt [Ag17.8(NO3)3.8(StBu)10][SiW12O40]·30DMSO (2) under the same conditions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) was studied.

Engineering Coinage Metal Nanoclusters for Electroluminescent Light-Emitting Diodes

Coinage metal nanoclusters (MNCs) are a new type of ultra-small nanoparticles on the sub-nanometer (typically < three nm) scale intermediate between atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles. At the same time, the ultra-small size and discrete energy levels of MNCs enable them to exhibit molecular-like energy gaps, and the total structure involving the metal core and surface ligand together leads to their unique properties. As a novel environmentally friendly chromophore, MNCs are promising candidates for the construction of electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, a systematic summary is urgently needed to correlate the properties of MNCs with their influences on electroluminescent LED applications, describe the synthetic strategies of highly luminescent MNCs for LEDs’ construction, and discuss the general influencing factors of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs. In this review, we first discuss relevant photoemissions of MNCs that may have major influences on the performance of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs, and then demonstrate the main synthetic strategies of highly luminescent MNCs. To this end, we illustrate the recent development of electroluminescent LEDs based on MNCs and present our perspectives on the opportunities and challenges, which may shed light on the design of MNC-based electroluminescent LEDs in the near future.
