Solution Dynamics of Covalent Open-[60]Fullerene Dimers

The translational diffusivity of covalent open-[60]fullerene dimers in an organic solvent was found to be well describable by a prolate ellipsoid model while a monomeric open-[60]fullerene behaves like a sphere model. The water association dynamics were examined for two open-[60]fullerene dimers, showing a higher water affinity for the sp3-linked dimer relative to sp2-linked dimer owing to an effective orbital-orbital overlap identified by π(fullerene)→σ*(H2O) interactions as suggested by theoretical calculations.

Phosphine-Mediated Dimerization of Open-[60]Fullerenes

By a reaction of trimethylphosphine with an open-[60]fullerene, corresponding dimers could be generated via two-fold deoxygenation processes even though the formation of β-oxo-phosphorous ylide is inevitable, a part of which is hydrolyzed to yield an α-methylene carbonyl derivative. Nevertheless, Wittig reaction and aldol condensation did not proceed well, indicating the presence of an unknown dimerization pathway. In the ylide formation, 1-phosphonium-3-carbabetaine was previously proposed as a key intermediate. Upon assuming that the betaine also participates in the dimerization process, we examined a possible reaction pathway computationally. As the results, the betaine formed by a reaction with the first phosphine was suggested to undergo nucleophilic addition to an unreacted molecule of the open-[60]fullerene, yielding an epoxide dimer which is then deoxygenated by the second phosphine to furnish the desired open-[60]fullerene dimer.

π-Extended Fullerenes with a Reactant Inside

Fullerene-graphene hybrids potentially exhibit unprecedented properties owing to interactive communication between the two units through a linkage. However, most of their discrete molecular structures have been still undisclosed thus far. With the recent rise in the awareness of facile access to molecular nanocarbon hybrids, we showcase novel π-extended fullerenes with a fused pyrazine or imidazole. Owing to the effective planar-curved π-conjugation, their absorption coefficients significantly increased in the visible region. Curiously enough, during the formation of π-extended fullerenes, an in situ generated NH₃ molecule was spontaneously encapsulated inside the fullerene cavity. The NH₃ molecule then underwent a timed orifice-expansion triggered by its sustained release. This is the first demonstration that fullerene captures a reactant inside, suggesting their potential usage for a sustained dosing and/or material delivery toward postfunctionalization of fullerene-graphene hybrids.

Molecular Carbon Imides

The creation and development of new forms of nanocarbons have fundamentally transformed the scientific landscape in the past three decades. As new members of the nanocarbon family with accurate size, shape, and edge structure, molecular carbon imides (MCIs) have shown unexpected and unique properties. Particularly, the imide functionalization strategy has endowed these rylene-based molecular carbons with fascinating characteristics involving flexible syntheses, tailor-made structures, diverse properties, excellent processability, and good stability. This Perspective elaborates molecular design evolution to functional landscapes, and illustrative examples are given, including a promising library of multi-size and multi-dimensional MCIs with rigidly conjugated π-architectures, ranging from 1D nanoribbon imides and 2D nanographene imides to cross-dimensional MCIs. Although researchers have achieved substantial progress in using MCIs as functional components for exploration of charge transport, photoelectric conversion, and chiral luminescence performances, they are far from unleashing their full potential. Developing highly efficient and regioselective coupling/ring-closure reactions involving the formation of multiple C-C bonds and the annulation of electron-deficient aromatic units is crucial. Prediction by theory with the help of machine learning and artificial intelligence research along with reliable nanotechnology characterization will give an impetus to the blossom of related fields. Future investigations will also have to advance toward─or even focus on─the emerging potential functions, especially in the fields of chiral electronics and spin electronics, which are expected to open new avenues.

Benzo-fused Tri[8]annulenes as Molecular Models of Cubic Graphite

Cyclotrimerization of 9,10‐dibromo‐9,10‐dihydrodibenzo[3,4:7,8]cycloocta[1,2‐l]phenanthrene with potassium tert‐butoxide in the presence of a transition‐metal catalyst afforded two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon stereoisomers consisting of three cyclooctatetraene (COT) moieties connected via a central benzene ring. Both isomeric tri[8]annulenes were obtained selectively through the choice of the catalyst: The α,α,α‐form (Ru catalyst) displayed a threefold symmetrywith the COT subunits forming the side walls of a (chiral) molecular cup. In the thermodynamically more stable α,α,β‐isomer (Pd catalyst), one of the three boat‐shaped COTs was flipped over and faced the opposite molecular hemisphere with respect to the central benzene ring as evidenced by crystal structure analysis. Both title compounds are small segments of “cubic graphite”, an elusive carbon allotrope.

Covalent Cross-Linking of 2H-MoS2 Nanosheets

The combination of 2D materials opens a wide range of possibilities to create new-generation structures with multiple applications. Covalently cross-linked approaches are a ground-breaking strategy for the formation of homo or heterostructures made by design. However, the covalent assembly of transition metal dichalcogenides flakes is relatively underexplored. Here, a simple covalent cross-linking method to build 2H-MoS₂ -MoS₂ homostructures is described, using commercially available bismaleimides. These assemblies are mainly connected vertically, basal plane to basal plane, creating specific molecular sized spaces between MoS₂ sheets. Therefore, this straightforward approach gives access to the controlled connection of sulfide-based 2D materials.

Dimension-Tunable Circularly Polarized Luminescent Nanoassemblies with Emerging Selective Chirality and Energy Transfer

The selective interplay between dimensional morphology transition and signal transfer is an important feature for both nanomaterials and biosystems. While most of those reported examples considered either dimensional transition or signal transfer, the integrated interplay or selectivity for these two aspects in single self-assembled system has been rarely studied. Here, we report that a positively charged chiral π-building block could self-assemble into multidimensional nanostructures, which showed tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Impressively, when these CPL-active multidimensional structures interacted with two achiral dyes (positively charged ThT and negatively charged CNA), 3D nanocubes and 0D nanospheres showed neither chirality transfer nor energy transfer, while 2D nanoplates could successfully trigger a selective chirality or energy transfer depending on the charge type of acceptor dyes, which then emitted an enhanced CPL signal. This work demonstrated rational design of charged π-building block for the construction of dimension controllable and selective signal transfer self-assembly system, which might deepen the understanding the interplay of dimensional structures and signal transfer functions in natural and nano systems.

Cyclo[18]carbon: Insight into Electronic Structure, Aromaticity, and Surface Coupling

Cyclo[18]carbon (C₁₈) is studied computationally at the density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio levels to obtain insight into its electronic structure, aromaticity, and adsorption properties on a NaCl surface. DFT functionals with a small amount of Hartree-Fock exchange fail to determine the experimentally observed polyyne molecular structure, revealing a cumulene-type geometry. Exchange-correlation functionals with a large amount of Hartree-Fock exchange as well as ab initio CASSCF calculations yield the polyyne structure as the ground state and the cumulene structure as a transition state between the two inverted polyyne structures through a Kekule distortion. The polyyne and the cumulene structures are found to be doubly Hückel aromatic. The calculated adsorption energy of cyclo[18]carbon on the NaCl surface is small (37 meV/C) and almost the same for both structures, implying that the surface does not stabilize a particular geometry.
