Polymeric Bowl-Shaped Nanoparticles: Hollow Structures with a Large Opening on the Surface

Polymeric bowl-shaped nanoparticles (BNPs) are anisotropic hollow structures with large openings on the surface, which have shown advantages such as high specific area and efficient encapsulation, delivery and release of large-sized cargoes on demand compared to solid nanoparticles or closed hollow structures. Several strategies have been developed to prepare BNPs based on either template or template-free methods. For instance, despite the widely used self-assembly strategy, alternative methods including emulsion polymerization, swelling and freeze-drying of polymeric spheres, and template-assisted approaches have also been developed. It is attractive but still challenging to fabricate BNPs due to their unique structural features. However, there is still no comprehensive summary of BNPs up to now, which significantly hinders the further development of this field. In this review, the recent progress of BNPs will be highlighted from the perspectives of design strategies, preparation methods, formation mechanisms, and emerging applications. Moreover, the future perspectives of BNPs will also be proposed.

From Self-Assembly of Colloidal Crystals toward Ordered Porous Layer Interferometry

Interferometry-based, reflectometric, label-free biosensors have made significant progress in the analysis of molecular interactions after years of development. The design of interference substrates is a key research topic for these biosensors, and many studies have focused on porous films prepared by top-down methods such as porous silicon and anodic aluminum oxide. Lately, more research has been conducted on ordered porous layer interferometry (OPLI), which uses ordered porous colloidal crystal films as interference substrates. These films are made using self-assembly techniques, which is the bottom-up approach. They also offer several advantages for biosensing applications, such as budget cost, adjustable porosity, and high structural consistency. This review will briefly explain the fundamental components of self-assembled materials and thoroughly discuss various self-assembly techniques in depth. We will also summarize the latest studies that used the OPLI technique for label-free biosensing applications and divide them into several aspects for further discussion. Then, we will comprehensively evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of self-assembly techniques and discuss possible future research directions. Finally, we will outlook the upcoming challenges and opportunities for label-free biosensing using the OPLI technique.

Controlling the Nucleation and Growth of Au on a-Se Nanospheres to Enhance Their Cellular Uptake and Cytotoxicity

We report a method to experimentally control the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of Au nanoparticles on the surface of amorphous Se (a-Se) nanospheres. When a Au^III precursor is added into a colloidal suspension of a-Se nanospheres, galvanic replacement occurs between them and the resultant Au⁰ atoms then heterogeneously nucleate and grow from the surface of the a-Se nanospheres. As a unique feature of this system, the Au⁰ atoms can only be produced on the surface of the a-Se nanospheres in the nucleation stage. Once Au nuclei are formed on the surface at the very beginning of a synthesis, they will serve as the preferential sites for further deposition of Au⁰ atoms, making it possible to control the number of Au nanoparticles on each nanosphere and the morphology of the final product. The dependence of the initial reduction rate on the pH can be used to obtain Se-Au hybrid nanoparticles containing one, two, three, and multiple Au nanoparticles on the surface of each a-Se nanosphere. The presence of Au patches on the hybrid nanoparticles offers an experimental handle to optimize the ligand distribution for the achievement of enhanced cellular uptake and cytotoxicity for the a-Se nanospheres.

Single Step Assembly of Janus Porous Biomaterial by Sub-Ambient Temperature Electrodeposition

Janus porous biomaterials are gaining increasing attention and there are considerable efforts to develop simple, rapid, and scalable methods capable of tuning micro- and macro-structures. Here, a single-step electro-fabrication method to create a Janus porous film by the electrodeposition of the amino-polysaccharide chitosan is reported. Specifically, a Janus structure emerges spontaneously when electrodeposition is performed at sub-ambient temperature (0-5 °C). Sub-ambient temperature electrodeposition experiments show that: a Janus microstructure emerges (potentially as the result of a subtle alteration of the intermolecular interactions responsible for self-assembly); important microstructural features (pore size, porosity, and thicknesses) can be tuned by conditions; and this method is readily scalable (vs serial printing) and can yield complex tubular structures with Janus faces. In vitro studies demonstrate anisotropic cell guidance, and in vivo studies using a rat calvarial defect model further confirm the beneficial features of such Janus porous film for guided bone regeneration. In summary, these results further demonstrate that electro-fabrication provides a simple and scalable platform technology for the controlled functional structures of soft matter for applications in regenerative medicine.

Template-Directed Synthesis of Colloidal Hollow Particles: Mind the Material Used for the Template

The dissolution of a polymeric solid typically starts with the absorption of solvent molecules, followed by swelling and volume expansion. Only when the extent of swelling reaches a threshold can the polymer chains be disentangled and then dissolved into the solvent. When the polymeric solid is encapsulated in a rigid shell, the swelling process will be impeded. Despite the widespread use of this process, it is rarely discussed in the literature how the polymeric solid is dissolved from the core for the generation of colloidal hollow particles. Recent studies have started to shed light on the mechanistic details involved in the formation of hollow particles through a template-directed process. Depending on the nature of the material used for the template, the removal of the template may involve different mechanisms and pathways, leading to the formation of distinct products. Here, a number of examples are used to illustrate this important phenomenon that is largely neglected in the literature. This article also discusses how the swelling of a polymeric template encapsulated in a rigid shell can be leveraged to fabricate new types of functional colloidal particles.

The potential role of herbal extract Wedelolactone for treating particle-induced osteolysis: an in vivo study

Background

Osteolysis is one of the most prevalent clinical complications affecting people who undergo total joint replacement (TJR). Wedelolactone (WDL) is a coumestan compound derived from the Wedelia chinensis plant and has been demonstrated to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the oral administration of WDL as a potential treatment for particle-induced osteolysis using a well-established mice calvarial disease model.

Methods

Thirty-two C57BL/6 J mice were randomized into four groups: Sham, vehicle, osteolysis group with oral WDL treatment for 4 weeks (WDL 4w), and osteolysis group treated for 8 weeks (WDL 8w). Micro-CT was used to quantitatively analyze the bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV) and trabecular bone thickness (Tb.Th). Osteoclast numbers were also measured from histological slides by two investigators who were blind to the treatment used.

Results

The results from micro-CT observation showed that BMD in the WDL 8w group improved significantly over the vehicle group (p < 0.05), but there was no significant difference between WDL 4w and 8w for BV/TV and Tb.Th. Osteoclast numbers in the WDL 4w group were also lower than the vehicle group (p < 0.05), but the difference between WDL 8w and 4w groups was not significant.

Conclusions

Particle-induced osteolysis is an inevitable long-term complication after TJR. The results of this animal study indicate that an oral administration of WDL can help reduce the severity of osteolysis without adverse effects.

Monodispersed Lignin Colloidal Spheres with Tailorable Sizes for Bio-Photonic Materials

Lignin colloidal spheres (LCSs) are promising biomaterials for application in drug storage and delivery, pollutant adsorption, and ultraviolet protection due to their biocompatibility, amphiphilicity, and conjugated structure. However, wide size distribution of LCSs greatly limits their performances, especially in many precise and advanced applications. Herein, the fabrication of monodispersed LCSs with tailorable sizes ranging from the nanoscale to microscale is reported. Lignin raw materials are first fractionated by solvent extraction, and then the lignin fraction is used to fabricate monodispersed LCSs by solvent/antisolvent self-assembly. The underlying mechanism for the formation of monodispersed LCS is primarily ascribed to the improved homogeneity of long-range intermolecular forces, especially the electrostatic forces and hydrophobic forces, between lignin molecules. Moreover, by manipulating the short-range order of LCSs, an innovative application of lignin as bio-photonic materials with tunable structural colorations (e.g., red, green, or blue) is demonstrated. This work not only provides deep insight and an effective strategy to eliminate the serious inhomogeneity of LCSs, but also makes lignin resources have great potential as biodegradable and biocompatible photonic materials in diverse advanced optical application fields such as photonic devices, anti-counterfeiting labels, and structural color pigments.

Designing Sites in Heterogeneous Catalysis: Are We Reaching Selectivities Competitive With Those of Homogeneous Catalysts?

A critical review of different prominent nanotechnologies adapted to catalysis is provided, with focus on how they contribute to the improvement of selectivity in heterogeneous catalysis. Ways to modify catalytic sites range from the use of the reversible or irreversible adsorption of molecular modifiers to the immobilization or tethering of homogeneous catalysts and the development of well-defined catalytic sites on solid surfaces. The latter covers methods for the dispersion of single-atom sites within solid supports as well as the use of complex nanostructures, and it includes the post-modification of materials via processes such as silylation and atomic layer deposition. All these methodologies exhibit both advantages and limitations, but all offer new avenues for the design of catalysts for specific applications. Because of the high cost of most nanotechnologies and the fact that the resulting materials may exhibit limited thermal or chemical stability, they may be best aimed at improving the selective synthesis of high value-added chemicals, to be incorporated in organic synthesis schemes, but other applications are being explored as well to address problems in energy production, for instance, and to design greener chemical processes. The details of each of these approaches are discussed, and representative examples are provided. We conclude with some general remarks on the future of this field.

Ultrathin Nanosheet-Supported Ag@Ag2O Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Vastly Enhanced Photothermal Conversion Efficiency for NIR-II-Triggered Photothermal Therapy

Photothermal therapy (PTT) working in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) region has aroused a huge interest due to its potential application in terms of clinical cancer treatment. However, owing to the lack of photothermal nanoagents with high photothermal conversion efficiency, NIR-II-driven PTT still suffers from poor efficiency and subsequent cancer recurrence. In this work, we show a new and highly efficient preparation approach for NIR-II photothermal nanoagents and tailor ultrathin layered double hydroxide (LDH)-supported Ag@Ag₂O core-shell nanoparticles (Ag@Ag₂O/LDHs-U), vastly improving NIR-II photothermal performance. A combination study (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)) verifies that ultrafine Ag@Ag₂O core-shell nanoparticles (∼3.8 nm) are highly dispersed and firmly immobilized within ultrathin LDH nanosheets, and their Ag₂O shell possesses abundant vacancy-type defects. These unique Ag@Ag₂O/LDHs-U display an impressive photothermal conversion efficiency as high as 76.9% at 1064 nm. Such an excellent photothermal performance is likely attributed to the enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) coupling effect between Ag and Ag₂O and the reduced band gap caused by vacancy-type defects in the Ag₂O shell. Meanwhile, Ag@Ag₂O/LDHs-U also show prominent photothermal stability, due to the unique supported core-shell nanostructure. Moreover, both in vitro and in vivo studies further confirm that Ag@Ag₂O/LDHs-U possess good biocompatible properties and outstanding PTT therapeutic efficacy in the NIR-II region. This research shows a new strategy in the rational design and preparation of an efficient photothermal agent, which is helpful to achieve more accurate and effective cancer theranostics.

Bimetallic Janus Nanocrystals: Syntheses and Applications

Bimetallic Janus nanocrystals have received considerable interest in recent years owing to their unique properties and niche applications. The side-by-side distribution of two distinct metals provides a flexible platform for tailoring the optical and catalytic properties of nanocrystals. First, a brief introduction to the structural features of bimetallic Janus nanocrystals, followed by an extensive discussion of the synthetic approaches, is given. The strategies and experimental controls for achieving the Janus structure, as well as the mechanistic understandings, are specifically discussed. Then, a number of intriguing properties and applications enabled by the Janus nanocrystals are highlighted. Finally, this article is concluded with future directions and outlooks with respect to both syntheses and applications of this new class of functional nanomaterials.

Controllable Synthesis of Polyphenol Spheres via Amine-Catalyzed Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

A facile and general strategy for preparing uniform and multifunctional polyphenol-based colloidal particles through amine-catalyzed polymerization-induced self-assembly is described. The size and interfacial adhesion of polyphenol spheres can be easily controlled over a wide range via adjusting the concentration of the cosolvent and monomer. Moreover, the polyphenol spheres showed excellent thermal and chemical stability and highly active properties and could efficiently deplete the reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are helpful for in vivo ROS regulation for inflammatory therapeutic. The accessible and versatile method provides a feasible way for the rational engineering of multifunctional polyphenol spheres, which have great potential in many fields.

Polydopamine Nanobottles with Photothermal Capability for Controlled Release and Related Applications

Nanobottles refer to colloidal particles featuring a hollow body connected to a single opening on the surface. This unique feature makes them ideal carriers for the encapsulation and controlled release of various types of cargos. Here a facile route to the fabrication of uniform nanobottles made of polydopamine by leveraging swelling-induced pressure is reported. When polystyrene spheres are coated with polydopamine and then incubated with a toluene/water emulsion, the polystyrene will be swollen to automatically poke a single hole in the shell because of the pressure inside the shell. After quenching the swelling with ethanol and then removing all the polystyrene with tetrahydrofuran, polydopamine nanobottles are obtained. The dimensions of the hollow body are determined by the polystyrene template, while the size of the opening can be tuned by varying the shell thickness. Through the opening, different types of cargos, including small molecules and biomacromolecules, can be easily loaded with a thermoresponsive material into the cavity. The cargos can be released in a controllable manner through direct heating or polydopamine-enabled photothermal heating. In a proof-of-concept experiment, the polydopamine nanobottles are used for temperature-controlled release of thrombin to trigger the formation of fibrin gels in situ.

Long-Term Effects of Polystyrene Nanoplastics in Human Intestinal Caco-2 Cells

The increasing presence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPLs) in the environment, and their consequent accumulation in trophic niches, could pose a potential health threat to humans, especially due to their chronic ingestion. In vitro studies using human cells are considered pertinent approaches to determine potential health risks to humans. Nevertheless, most of such studies have been conducted using short exposure times and high concentrations. Since human exposure to MNPLs is supposed to be chronic, there is a lack of information regarding the potential in vitro MNPLs effects under chronic exposure conditions. To this aim, we assessed the accumulation and potential outcomes of polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs), as a model of MNPLs, in undifferentiated Caco-2 cells (as models of cell target in ingestion exposures) under a relevant long-term exposure scenario, consisting of eight weeks of exposure to sub-toxic PSNPs concentrations. In such exposure conditions, culture-media was changed every 2–3 days to maintain constant exposure. The different analyzed endpoints were cytotoxicity, dysregulation of stress-related genes, genotoxicity, oxidative DNA damage, and intracellular ROS levels. These are endpoints that showed to be sensitive enough in different studies. The obtained results attest that PSNPs accumulate in the cells through time, inducing changes at the ultrastructural and molecular levels. Nevertheless, minor changes in the different evaluated genotoxicity-related biomarkers were observed. This would indicate that no DNA damage or oxidative stress is observed in the human intestinal Caco-2 cells after long-term exposure to PSNPs. This is the first study dealing with the long-term effects of PSNPs on human cultured cells.

Core-shell particles in rotating electric and magnetic fields: Designing tunable interactions via particle engineering

Tunable interactions between colloidal particles, governed by external rotating electric or magnetic fields, yield rich capabilities for prospective self-assembly technologies of materials and fundamental particle-resolved studies of phase transitions and transport phenomena in soft matter. However, the role of the internal structure of colloidal particles in the tunable interactions has never been systematically investigated. Here, we study the tunable interactions between composite particles with core-shell structure in a rotating electric field and show that the engineering of their internal structure provides an effective tool for designing the interactions. We generalized an integral theory and studied the tunable interactions between core-shell particles with homogeneous cores (layered particles) and cores with nano-inclusions to reveal the main trends in the interactions influenced by the structure. We found that depending on the materials of the core, shell, and solvent, the interactions with the attractive pairwise part and positive or negative three-body part can be obtained, as well as pairwise repulsion with attractive three-body interactions (for triangular triplets). The latter case is observed for the first time, being unattainable for homogeneous particles but feasible with core-shell particles: Qualitatively similar interactions are inherent to charged colloids (repulsive pairwise and attractive three-body energies), known as a model system of globular proteins. The methods and conclusions of our paper can be generalized for magnetic and 3D colloidal systems. The results make a significant advance in the analysis of tunable interactions in colloidal systems, which are of broad interest in condensed matter, chemical physics, physical chemistry, materials science, and soft matter.

Swelling-Induced Symmetry Breaking: A Versatile Approach to the Scalable Production of Colloidal Particles with a Janus Structure

Janus particles are widely sought for applications related to colloidal assembly, stabilization of emulsions, and development of active colloids, among others. Here we report a versatile route to the fabrication of well-controlled Janus particles by simply breaking the symmetry of spherical particles with swelling. When a polystyrene (PS) sphere covered by a rigid shell made of silica or polydopamine is exposed to a good solvent for PS, a gradually increased pressure will be created inside the shell. If the pressure becomes high enough to poke a hole in the shell, the spherical symmetry will break while pushing out the swollen PS through the opening to generate a Janus particle comprised of two distinct components. One of the components is made of PS and its size is controlled by the extent of swelling. The other component is comprised of the rigid shell and remaining PS, with its overall diameter determined by the original PS sphere and the rigid shell. This solution-based route holds promises for the scalable production of complex Janus particles with a variety of compositions and in large quantities.

Rational Design of Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles' Surface Chemistry for Quantum Dot Enrichment and an Ultrasensitive Lateral Flow Immunoassay

Lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) have drawn much attention in point-of-care diagnostic applications, and the development of high-performance label materials is the key. In this study, the impact of the surface chemistry of dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) on their enrichment performance toward quantum dots (QDs) and signal amplification of the resultant DMSNs-QDs as label materials have been investigated. A series of DMSNs with controllable amino/thiol group densities have been synthesized. It is demonstrated that the amino groups are beneficial for QD fluorescence preservation, owing to the amino-based surface passivation, while the thiol groups are responsible for increasing the loading capacity of QDs due to the thiol-metal coordination. The optimized DMSNs-QDs labels with an amino density of 153 μmol g^-1 and a thiol density of 218 μmol g^-1 displayed sufficient QD fluorescence preservation (89.4%) and high QD loading capacity (1.55 g g^-1). Ultrasensitive detection of serum amyloid A (SAA) with a detection limit of 10 pg mL^-1 with the naked eye was achieved, which is 1 order of magnitude higher than that reported in the literature. This study provides insights into the development of advanced label materials and an ultrasensitive LFIA for future bioassay applications.

Janus Nanoparticles: From Fabrication to (Bio)Applications

Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) refer to the integration of two or more chemically discrepant composites into one structure system. Studies into JNPs have been of significant interest due to their interesting characteristics stemming from their asymmetric structures, which can integrate different functional properties and perform more synergetic functions simultaneously. Herein, we present recent progress of Janus particles, comprehensively detailing fabrication strategies and applications. First, the classification of JNPs is divided into three blocks, consisting of polymeric composites, inorganic composites, and hybrid polymeric/inorganic JNPs composites. Then, the fabrication strategies are alternately summarized, examining self-assembly strategy, phase separation strategy, seed-mediated polymerization, microfluidic preparation strategy, nucleation growth methods, and masking methods. Finally, various intriguing applications of JNPs are presented, including solid surfactants agents, micro/nanomotors, and biomedical applications such as biosensing, controlled drug delivery, bioimaging, cancer therapy, and combined theranostics. Furthermore, challenges and future works in this field are provided.

The Role of Dendritic Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles' Size for Quantum Dots Enrichment and Lateral Flow Immunoassay Performance

Using dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DMSNs) for quantum dots (QDs) enrichment and signal amplification is an emerging strategy for improving the detection sensitivity of lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). In this study, a new and convenient approach is developed to prepare water-dispersible DMSNs-QDs. A series of DMSNs with various diameters (138, 251, 368, and 471 nm) are studied for loading QDs and LFIA applications. The resultant water-dispersible DMSNs-QDs exhibit a high fluorescence retention of 81.8%. The increase in particle size from 138 to 471 nm results in an increase in loading capacity of QDs and a decrease in binding quantity of the DMSNs-QDs in the test line of LFIA. This trade-off leads to an optimal DMSNs-QDs size of 368 nm with a limit of detection reaching 10 pg mL^-1 (equivalent to 9.0 × 10^-14 m) for the detection of C-reactive protein, which is nearly an order of magnitude more sensitive than the literature. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate the distinctive role of DMSN's size for QDs enrichment and LFIA. The strategy developed from this work is useful for the rational design of high-quality QDs-based nanoparticles for ultrasensitive detection.

Nanobottles for Controlled Release and Drug Delivery

Nanobottles refer to colloidal particles with a hollow interior and a single opening in the wall. These unique features make them ideal carriers for the loading, encapsulation, release, and delivery of various types of theranostic agents in an array of biomedical applications. The hollow interior gives them a high loading capacity while the opening enables quick loading and controlled release of the payload(s). More significantly, on-demand release can be readily achieved by adding a stimuli-responsive material as the inner matrix or cork stopper. This progress report begins with an introduction to the general structures and properties of nanobottles, followed by a brief discussion on the methods developed for their fabrication. The use of nanobottles for loading different types of payloads is then showcased, including small-molecule drugs, biomacromolecules, imaging contrast agents, and functional nanoparticles. The strategies explored for controlling the release by varying the size of the opening and/or integrating with a stimuli-responsive material are also highlighted. This paper concludes with some perspectives on future directions for this class of nanomaterials in terms of fabrication, functionalization, and application.

Effects of Strain and Kinetics on the H2O2-Assisted Reconstruction of Ag-Au-Ag Nanorods

Morphology of Ag nanocrystals (NCs) is essential to the NC application in catalysis, optics, and as antibacterial agents. Therefore, it is important to develop synthetic methods and understand the evaluation of NC morphology in different chemical environments. In this study, we report interesting findings of the morphological change of fivefold-twinned Ag-Au-Ag nanorods (NRs) under the effect of H2O2 both as an oxidant (etchant) and a reductant. At low H2O2 concentration, the reconstruction of Ag-Au-Ag NRs was dominated by the growth along the longitudinal direction of NRs. With the increase of H2O2 concentration, the reconstruction also occurs in the transverse direction, and a clear change in particle morphology was observed. We further systematically studied the mechanism of the reaction. The results showed that the transition of the morphology was a two-step process: (1) the etching of Ag on the seeds and (2) the reduction of Ag2O. In the second step, the reaction kinetics was highly affected by H2O2 concentration. At low H2O2 concentration, the growth mainly occurs along ⟨110⟩. However, at high H2O2 concentration, the reduction of Ag was not facet-selective. Using the developed method, we can prepare various bimetallic NCs (high aspect ratio NRs with abundant pinholes, nanoplates, and other NCs). The effect of the reconstruction process on the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance of NCs was investigated.

Controllable Synthesis and Crystallization of Nanoporous TiO2 Deep-Submicrospheres and Nanospheres via an Organic Acid-Mediated Sol-Gel Process

Although considerable progress has been achieved in the preparation of uniform hydrous TiO₂ spheres (HTS) through the sol-gel process, there is plenty of room left in tailoring the size and morphology of HTS on the deep-submicron scale or even nanoscale since the diameters of the so far reported HTS are mostly on the (sub)micron scale (0.3-1.2 μm). Here, we develop a novel titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP)-organic acid (OA)-acetonitrile (ACN)-methanol (MeOH)-H₂O system, which facilitates the control of nanoporous HTS to the range of 50-300 nm. The synthetic parameters including OA, (co-)solvent, concentration of precursor, and reaction temperature are comprehensively optimized, aiming at reproducible preparation and precise size control. Among the various OAs, n-valeric acid presents the best capability in controlling the spherical morphology and size uniformity. The synthesized amorphous HTS containing numerous micropores and mesopores show excellent hydrothermal stability and offer suitable self-template for the subsequent synthesis of mesoporous anatase TiO₂ spheres (MAT) with a large surface area of 99.1 m²/g. The obtained TiO₂ deep-submicrospheres and nanospheres with tunable sizes show great potential in various research fields.

Phase-Change Materials for Controlled Release and Related Applications

Phase-change materials (PCMs) have emerged as a novel class of thermo-responsive materials for controlled release, where the payloads encapsulated in a solid matrix are released only upon melting the PCM to trigger a solid-to-liquid phase transition. Herein, the advances over the past 10 years in utilizing PCMs as a versatile platform for the encapsulation and release of various types of therapeutic agents and biological effectors are highlighted. A brief introduction to PCMs in the context of desired properties for controlled release and related applications is provided. Among the various types of PCMs, a specific focus is placed on fatty acids and fatty alcohols for their natural availability, low toxicity, biodegradability, diversity, high abundance, and low cost. Then, various methods capable of processing PCMs, and their mixtures with payloads, into stable suspensions of colloidal particles, and the different means for triggering the solid-to-liquid phase transition are discussed. Finally, a range of applications enabled by the controlled release system based on PCMs are presented together with some perspectives on future directions.
