Direct Analysis of Rare Circulating Tumor Cells in Whole Blood Based on Their Controlled Capture and Release on Electrode Surface

Glowing Octopus-Inspired Nanomachine: A Versatile Aptasensor for Efficient Capture, Imaging, Separation, and NIR-Triggered Release of Cancer Cells

The separation and analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in liquid biopsy significantly facilitated clinical cancer diagnosis and personalized therapy. However, current methods face challenges in simultaneous efficient capturing, separation, and imaging of CTCs, and most of the devices cannot be reused/regenerated. We present here an innovative glowing octopus-inspired nanomachine (GOIN), capable of capturing, imaging, separating, and controlling the release of cancer cells from whole blood and normal cells. The GOIN comprises an aptamer-decorated magnetic fluorescent covalent organic framework (COF), which exhibits a strong affinity for nucleolin-overexpressed cancer cells through a multivalent binding effect. The captured cancer cells can be directly imaged using the intrinsic stable fluorescence of the COF layer in the GOIN. Employing magnet and NIR laser assistance enables easy separation and mild photothermal release of CTCs from the normal cells and the nanomachine without compromising cell viability. Moreover, the GOIN demonstrates a reusing capability, as the NIR-triggered CTC release is mild and nondestructive, allowing the GOIN to be reused at least three times.

Development of a regenerable dual-trigger tripedal DNA walker electrochemical biosensor for sensitive detection of microRNA-155

Since microRNAs (miRNAs) are valuable biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis, the pursuit of enhanced detection sensitivity through signal amplification strategies has emerged as a prominent focus in low-abundance miRNA detection research. DNA walkers, as dynamic DNA nanodevice, have gained significant attention for their applications as signal amplification strategies. To overcome the limitations of unipedal DNA walkers with a restricted signal amplification efficiency, there is a great need for multi-pedal DNA walkers that offer improved walking and signal amplification capabilities. Here, we employed a combination of catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) and APE1 enzymatic cleavage reactions to construct a tripedal DNA walker, driving its movement to establish a cascade signal amplification system for the electrochemical detection of miRNA-155. The biosensor utilizes tumor cell-endogenous microRNA-155 and APE1 as dual-trigger for DNA walker formation and walking movement, leading to highly efficient and controllable signal amplification. The biosensor exhibited high sensitivity, with a low detection limit of 10 pM for microRNA-155, and successfully differentiated and selectively detected microRNA-155 from other interfering RNAs. Successful detection in 20 % serum samples indicates its potential clinical application. In addition, we harnessed strand displacement reactions to create a gentle yet efficient electrode regeneration strategy, to addresses the time-consuming challenges during electrode modification processes. We have successfully demonstrated the stability of current signals even after multiple cycles of electrode regeneration. This study showcased the high-efficiency amplification potential of multi-pedal DNA walkers and the effectiveness and versatility of strand displacement in biosensing applications. It opens a promising path for developing regenerable electrochemical biosensors. This regenerable strategy for electrochemical biosensors is both label-free and cost-effective, and holds promise for detecting various disease-related RNA targets beyond its current application.

Laser induced graphene electrochemical aptasensor based on tetrahedral DNA for ultrasensitive on-site detection of microcystin-LR

The development of accurate and reliable sensor for on-site detection of microcystin-LR (MC-LR), one of hazardous environmental pollutants, is highly required. Herein, a laser induced graphene (LIG)-based electrochemical aptasensor for sensitive on-site detection of MC-LR was reported. LIG electrode, the substrate of aptasensor, was prepared via thermal transfer with ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, and LIG acted as quasi-reference electrode to replace conventional Ag/AgCl electrode for better operability and robustness. LIG electrode provided large surface area to assemble tetrahedral DNA to absorb methylene blue (MB) for the signal amplification. For detection, the specific recognition of MC-LR with aptamer led to the stripping of tetrahedral DNA complex and further the decreased redox current of MB (IMB). Consequently, the fabricated aptasensor offered high analytical performance for MC-LR detection with a linear range of 1 × 10-2-1 × 105 pM and a detection limit of 3 × 10-3 pM, which was successfully used for water sample analysis with comparable reliability and accuracy of standard method. Furthermore, a portable detection platform by coupling of LIG-based electrochemical aptasensor with electrochemical workstation was constructed for on-site detection of MC-LR. This work offers a novel method for the on-site monitoring of MC-LR, which promotes the investigation of LIG-based electrochemical biosensing in the field of environmental analysis.

Application of Biosensors in Detecting Breast Cancer Metastasis

Breast cancer has garnered global attention due to its high incidence worldwide, and even more noteworthy is that approximately 90% deaths due to breast cancer are attributed to cancer metastasis. Therefore, the early diagnosis of breast cancer metastasis holds significant importance for reducing mortality outcomes. Biosensors play a crucial role in the early detection of metastatic breast cancer due to their advantages, such as ease of use, portability, and real-time analysis capabilities. This review primarily described various types of sensors for detecting breast cancer metastasis based on biomarkers and cell characteristics, including electrochemical, optical, and microfluidic chips. We offered detailed descriptions of the performance of these various biosensors and made comparisons between them. Furthermore, we described the pathology of breast cancer and summarized commonly used biomarkers for metastatic breast cancer. Finally, we discussed the advantages of current-stage biosensors and the challenges that need to be addressed, as well as prospects for their future development.

An electrochemical biosensor based on network-like DNA nanoprobes for detection of mesenchymal circulating tumor cells

The identification and detection of mesenchymal circulating tumor cells （mCTCs） is important for early warning of tumor metastasis. The majority of conventional detection methods for CTCs rely on the recognition of epithelial biomarkers, which is technically challenging for detecting CTCs with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-induced phenotypic alteration. In this work, we have constructed a label-free biosensor for sensitive electrochemical assay of mCTCs. In our design, the capture probe can recognize the vimentin overexpressed on the surface of mCTCs with high specificity. Meantime, the network-like DNA nanoprobes with multiple G-quadruplex/hemin complexes and multiple cholesterol molecules can be grafted to the cell surface based on the high affinity between cholesterol molecules and cell membrane. Owing to the mimic horseradish peroxidase of G-quadruplex/hemin complexes, strong electrochemical responses will be obtained for sensitive quantification of mCTCs with a detection limit of 8 cell mL-1. Moreover, the biosensor can effectively overcome the interference of vimentin negative cells or secretory vimentin, and realize the recovery tests in whole blood with high accuracy, thereby may further promoting the diagnosis and personalized treatment of cancer in clinic.

MnO2 nanosheets and gold nanoparticles supported electrochemical detection of circulating tumor cells

The concentration of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood is strongly correlated with the progress of certain metastatic cancers. In this study, we have developed a novel and facile electrochemical biosensor for the detection of CTCs based on the use of manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO2 NSs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Aptamer sequence of target cell is modified on the surface of AuNPs for specifical recognition. With low-speed centrifugation, numerous AuNPs@DNA can be removed from the supernatant. On the other hand, MnO2 NSs are modified on the electrode surface to capture unreacted AuNPs@DNA. The declined electrochemical signal intensity can be used to reflect the level of CTCs. This biosensor achieves a wide linear range from 10 to 104 cells mL-1 and a limit of detection as low as 3 cells mL-1. Due to the specific aptamer as the recognition element, interfering cells can be successfully distinguished and this method performs satisfactorily in clinical samples. Therefore, it has great potential to be used as a powerful tool benefiting rare cells analysis and the investigation of dynamics of cellular interactions.

Engineering Biomimetic Biosensor Using Dual-Targeting Multivalent Aptamer Regulated 3D DNA Walker Enables High-Performance Detection of Heterogeneous Circulating Tumor Cells

The phenotypic heterogeneity of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and the nonspecific adsorption of background cells impede the effective and sensitive detection of rare CTCs. Although leukocyte membrane coating approach has a good antileukocyte adhesion ability and holds great promise for addressing the challenge of capture purity, its limited specificity and sensitivity prevent its use in the detection of heterogeneous CTCs. To overcome these obstacles, a biomimetic biosensor that integrated dual-targeting multivalent aptamer/walker duplex functionalized biomimetic magnetic beads and an enzyme-powered DNA walker signal amplification strategy is designed. As compared to conventional leukocyte membrane coating, the biomimetic biosensor achieves efficient and high purity enrichment of heterogeneous CTCs with different epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) expression while minimizing the interference of leukocytes. Meanwhile, the capture of target cells can trigger the release of walker strands to activate an enzyme-powered DNA walker, resulting in cascade signal amplification and the ultrasensitive and accurate detection of rare heterogeneous CTCs. Importantly, the captured CTCs remained viable and can be recultured in vitro with success. Overall, this work provides a new perspective for the efficient detection of heterogeneous CTCs by biomimetic membrane coating and paves the way for early cancer diagnosis.

Metal-mediated Fe3O4@polydopamine-aptamer capture nanoprobe coupling multifunctional MXene@Au@Pt nanozyme for direct and portable photothermal analysis of circulating breast cancer cells

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in the world and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are reliable biomarkers for early breast cancer diagnosis in a non-invasive manner. However, effective isolation and sensitive detection of BC-CTCs by portable devices in human blood samples are extremely challenging. Herein, we proposed a highly sensitive and portable photothermal cytosensor for direct capture and quantification of BC-CTCs. To achieve efficient isolation of BC-CTCs, aptamer functionalized Fe₃O₄@PDA nanoprobe was facilely prepared through Ca²⁺-mediated DNA adsorption. To further detect the captured BC-CTCs with high sensitivity, multifunctional two-dimensional Ti₃C₂@Au@Pt nanozyme was synthesized, which not only possessed superior photothermal effect but also exhibited high peroxidase-like activity for catalyzing 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce TMB oxide (oxTMB) with a strong photothermal characteristic, combining with Ti₃C₂@Au@Pt to synergistically amplify the temperature signal. Moreover, numerous Ti₃C₂@Au@Pt nanocomposites would be selectively attained on the BC-CTCs surface through multi-aptamer recognition and binding strategy, which further enhanced the specificity and facilitated signal amplification. Therefore, direct separation and highly sensitive detection of BC-CTCs was successfully achieved in human blood samples. More significantly, the controlled release of the captured BC-CTCs without affecting cell viability could be straightforwardly realized by a simple strand displacement reaction. Thus, with the distinct features of portability, high sensitivity, and easy operation, the current method holds great promise for early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Detection of rare CTCs by electrochemical biosensor built on quaternary PdPtCuRu nanospheres with mesoporous architectures

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are promising liquid biopsy biomarkers for early cancer detection and anti-cancer therapy evaluation. The ultra-low abundance of CTCs in blood samples requires highly sensitive and accurate detection ways. In this study, we propose the design of a dual-recognition electrochemical biosensor to improve both the specificity and signal response. PdPtCuRu mesoporous nanospheres (PdPtCuRu MNSs) with excellent three dimensions (3D) nanopore structures were synthesized by one-pot method and connected to mucin 1 (MUC1) aptamer to serve as signal amplification probe. Besides, superconductive carbon black, Ketjen Black (KB), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified organometallic frame (CeMOF-Au) were combined to work as signal transducer. The characteristic branching structure of KB provides abundant contact points to load CeMOF-Au to heighten the interface electron transfer rate. In addition, AuNPs were reduced on the surface of CeMOF, which could effectively bind the capture antibody and further enhance the conductivity. Under the optimized condition, the limit of detection (LOD) of the as-constructed biosensor was less than 10 cells mL^-1 for model A549 cells, and showed good specificity and accuracy in spiked serum samples. We envision the as-proposed electrochemical biosensor would alternate as a useful tool for the clinical detection of CTCs for cancer diagnosis.

Liquid Biopsy in Bladder Cancer

Fluid biopsy based on circulating tumor cells (CTCs), circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), exosome, and circulating RNA in blood and body fluids has gained attention. Here, the recent findings and issues related to liquid biopsy in bladder cancer are discussed, with a focus on CTCs, ctDNA, urinary tumor DNA, exosome, and circulating RNA.

Facile Preparation of Three-Dimensional Wafer with Interconnected Porous Structure for High-Performance Capture and Nondestructive Release of Circulating Tumor Cells

Efficient isolation and downstream bioinformation analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in whole blood contribute to the early diagnosis of cancer and investigation of cancer metastasis. However, the separation and release of CTCs remain a great challenge due to the extreme rarity of CTCs and severe interference from other cells in complex clinical samples. Herein, we developed a low-cost and easy-to-fabricate aptamer-functionalized wafer with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous structure by grafting polydopamine (PDA), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and aptamer in sequence (Ni@PDA-PEG-Apt) for the capture and release of CTCs. The Ni@PDA-PEG-Apt wafer integrated the features of Ni foam with a 3D interconnected porous structure offering enough tunnels for cells to flow through and enhancing aptamer-cell contact frequency, the spacer PEG with flexible and high hydrophilic property increasing anti-interference ability and providing the wafer with more binding sites for aptamer, which result in an enhanced capture specificity and efficiency for CTCs. Because of these advantages, the Ni@PDA-PEG-Apt wafer achieved a high capture efficiency of 78.25%. The captured cancer cells were mildly released by endonuclease with up to 61.85% efficiency and good proliferation. Furthermore, tumor cells were injected into mice and experienced circulation in vivo. In blood samples after circulation, 65% of target tumor cells can be efficiently captured by the wafer, followed by released and recultured cells with high viability. Further downstream metabolomics analysis showed that target cancer cells remained with high biological activity and can be well separated from MCF-10A cells based on metabolic profiles by the PCA analysis, indicating the great potential of our strategy for further research on the progression of cancer metastasis. Notably, not only is the wafer cheap with a cost of only 3.58 U.S. dollars and easily prepared by environmental-friendly reagents but also the process of capturing and releasing tumor cells can be completed within an hour, which is beneficial for large-scale clinical use in the future.

Ultrasensitive dual-signal electrochemical ratiometric aptasensor based on Co-MOFs with intrinsic self-calibration property for Mucin 1

The concentration of tumor biomarker Mucin 1 (MUC 1) is highly related with many diseases, which can be employed for the early diagnosis of cancer. In this paper, an electrochemical ratiometric aptasensor with intrinsic self-calibration property for the detection of MUC 1 is presented. In this paper, Co-MOFs themselves were employed as signal substances. This strategy was fabricated by using gold nanoparticles@black phosphorus (BP) as the substrate on the electrode, followed by modification of DNA nanotetrahedrons (DTN) via Au-S bond. The terminal of DTN contains MUC 1 aptamer. In the presence of MUC 1, the signal of DNA-labeled Co-MOFs can be detected. The current signal of Co-MOFs increased and that of thionine (as reference) was unchanged upon the addition of MUC 1. Thus, an intrinsic self-calibration aptasensor was achieved. In order to simplify the modification procedure, the electrolyte solution thionine was employed as an inner reference probe. Moreover, coupling of the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) with these MOFs signal tags presents an enzyme-free method for signal amplification, endowing the proposed ratiometric biosensor detection with high reproducibility and high sensitivity. The current ratio (I_IR/I_SP) remained stable over 30 individual measurements performed on ten different working electrodes. Even ten repeated scans performed on a single electrode exhibited a constant current ratio. The electrochemical ratiometric aptasensor is highly sensitivity for MUC 1 with the detection limit of 1.34 fM. Our proposed ratiometric sensor has great potential for the detection of cancer-related biomarkers.

Fabrication of a Polyvalent Aptamer Network on an Electrode Surface for Capture and Analysis of Circulating Tumor Cells

Capture and analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from complex matrixes is pivotal for the prediction of cancer metastasis and personalized treatment of cancer. Herein, we propose a strategy for CTC capture by design and fabrication of a polyvalent aptamer network on an electrode surface, which can be further used for the sensitive analysis of CTCs. In our design, the polyvalent aptamer network, which is constructed via a rolling circle amplification reaction, can significantly enhance the cell-binding abilities. Meanwhile, tetrahedral DNA structures previously assembled on the electrode surface will promote the spatial orientation and reduce the steric hindrance effect of the cell capture, thus improving the cell capture efficiency. Importantly, a detectable electrochemical signal can be obtained without additional signal probes by means of target-induced allostery of the DNA hairpin structures. Further studies reveal that the electrochemical response is proportional to the logarithm of the CTC abundance ranging from 10² to 5 × 10⁴ cell mL^-1 with a low limit of detection of 23 cell mL^-1. Moreover, the proposed capture strategy exhibits excellent stability and anti-interference in human whole blood, indicating its promising potential in clinical diagnosis.

Designer tetrahedral DNA framework-based microfluidic technology for multivalent capture and release of circulating tumor cells

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have been recognized as a general biomarker for the early detection, diagnosis and therapy monitoring of cancer. Due to their extreme rarity in peripheral blood, the isolation and analysis of CTCs with high efficiency, high purity and high viability remains a tremendous technological challenge. Herein, we combined tetrahedral DNA framework (TDFs), herringbone channel (HB) chip, together with aptamer-triggered hybridization chain reaction (apt-HCR) to develop an efficient microfluidic system (T-μFS) for capture and release of simulated CTCs. The capture efficiency of MCF-7 ​cells was from 83.3% to 94.2% when the cell numbers ranged from 10 to 10³ using our T-μFS in the whole blood. The release efficiency of the MCF-7 ​cells was 96.2% and the MCF-7 ​cell viability after release was 94.6% using our T-μFS in PBS buffer. Reculture and RT-qPCR studies showed that there was almost no damage by the capture and release treatment for the MCF-7 ​cells viability. These results revealed that our T-μFS could be developed as an integrated and automatic technical platform with great performance for multivalent capture and release of CTCs and have a wide application prospect for tumor liquid biopsy.

Rapid and efficient capturing of circulating tumor cells from breast cancer Patient's whole blood via the antibody functionalized microfluidic (AFM) chip

Accurate enumeration of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in cancer patient's blood functions as a form of "liquid biopsy", which is pivotal for cancer screening, prognosis, and diagnosis. Herein, we demonstrate a novel antibody functionalized microfluidic (AFM) chip that rapidly and accurately qualifies CTCs from breast cancer patient's whole blood. The AFM chip consists of three buffering zones, and four main capturing zones filled with equilateral triangular pillars and periodically distributed obstacles. We validate the AFM chip with three Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) positive cancer cell lines, including breast (MCF-7), prostate (PC3), and lung cancer cell lines (A549), achieving capture efficiencies of 99.5%, 98.5%, and 96.72%, respectively, at a flow rate of 0.6 mL/hour. We further confirm the efficacy of the AFM chip with five advanced breast cancer patients' whole blood to capture EpCAM+/CK19+/CD45-/DAPI + CTCs. Interestingly, high number of CTCs were identified from each patient's 1 mL whole blood (595-2270), The AFM chip is highly efficient at rapidly capturing CTCs from cancer patients' whole blood without requiring extra equipment, which is critically beneficial for clinical application.

A dual-recognition-controlled electrochemical biosensor for accurate and sensitive detection of specific circulating tumor cells

Accurate and sensitive assay of specific circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is of importance for the diagnosis, treatment, and metastasis monitoring of cancer. Herein, we have proposed a dual-recognition-controlled electrochemical biosensor in this work for the detection of specific CTCs. To this sensor, two aptamer hairpin probes are designed to be able to separately bind to two adjacent proteins on the cell membrane to activate the associative toehold for strand displacement reaction, which will then trigger a dimer-like rolling cycle amplification reaction, and finally produce significantly amplified electrochemical signals for sensitive quantification of target CTCs. In our design, only the case that the two proteins are simultaneously expressed on the cell membrane can result in obvious signal responses, which may greatly improve the accuracy of CTCs analysis. The proposed biosensor can possess excellent selectivity to distinguish target cells from different cancer cells. Moreover, the combination of rolling cycle amplification and DNA nanostructure capture probes can effectively lower the detection limit to 3 cells mL^-1. Notably, our biosensor can be applied to the assay of the target CTCs in the complex whole blood matrixes, verifying its strong stability and anti-interference. Thus, the as-proposed dual-recognition-controlled electrochemical biosensor may exhibit great promise in clinical cancer diagnosis and personalized medicine.

A double-tetrahedral DNA framework based electrochemical biosensor for ultrasensitive detection and release of circulating tumor cells

Detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients' blood is essential for early diagnosis, precise treatment and prognosis of cancer. Yet due to CTCs being extremely rare in the peripheral blood of patients, it is still a challenge to detect CTCs with high sensitivity and high selectivity. Here, we developed a double-tetrahedral DNA framework (DTDF) based electrochemical biosensor system (E-CTC sensor system) for ultrasensitive detection and release of CTCs. In this work, an upright tetrahedral DNA framework (UTDF) was used as a rigid scaffold to modify a screen-printed gold electrode (SPGE), and an inverted tetrahedral DNA framework (ITDF) provided three vertex chains to multivalently bind with aptamers. Meanwhile, a streptavidin tagged horseradish peroxidase homopolymer (SA-polyHRP) was linked to biotin-modified aptamers to significantly amplify the signal. Moreover, the captured CTCs could be effectively released via benzonase nuclease with little cell damage. Our E-CTC sensor system achieved a linear range from 1 to 10⁵ MCF-7 cells with an ultralow detection limit of 1 cell. The release efficiency reached 88.1%-97.6% and the viability of the released cells reached up to 98%. We also detected the MCF-7 cells in mimic whole blood samples, suggesting that the E-CTC sensor system shows promise for use in clinical research.

Reversible capturing and voltammetric determination of circulating tumor cells using two-dimensional nanozyme based on PdMo decorated with gold nanoparticles and aptamer

A novel cytosensor was constructed for the ultrasensitive detection and nondestructive release of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) by combining Au nanoparticles-loaded two-dimensional bimetallic PdMo (2D Au@PdMo) nanozymes and electrochemical reductive desorption. The 2D Au@PdMo nanozymes possessed high-efficiency peroxidase-like activity and were assembled with an aptamer composed of a thiol-modified epithelial specific cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) to strengthen CTCs adhesion. Moreover, the electrode surface was decorated with highly fractal Au nanostructures (HFAuNSs) composites due to the similarity in fractal nanostructure with the CTCs membrane to enhance the CTCs anchoring efficiency and release capability. The captured CTCs could be further efficiently dissociated and nondestructively released from the modified electrodes upon electrochemical reductive desorption. The designed cytosensor showed an excellent analytical performance, with a wide linear range from 2 to 1 × 10⁵ cells mL^-1 and low limit of detection (LOD) of 2 cells mL^-1 (S/N = 3) at the working potential in the range  -0.6 to 0.2 V. A satisfactory CTCs release reaching a range of 93.7-97.4% with acceptable RSD from 3.55 to 6.41% and good cell viability was obtained. Thus, the developed cytosensor might provide a potential alternative to perform CTC-based liquid biopsies, with promising applications in early diagnosis of tumors. A simple method to assay tumor cells based on target-initiated steric hindrance

We have proposed a simple electrochemical method in this work for the assay of tumor cells through their own steric hindrance effect. Specifically, tumor cells can block the catalysis of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase to the aptamer previously immobilized on the electrode surface. By making use of the hindrance effect, cancer cells can be quantitatively analyzed in the range from 1.6 × 102 to 1.6 × 106 cells per mL without complicated design or cumbersome operation, while the detection limit can be about 53 cells per mL. This method can also show satisfactory performance in complex environments, indicating its potential in clinical application.

Electrochemical Detection and Point-of-Care Testing for Circulating Tumor Cells: Current Techniques and Future Potentials

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are tumor cells that escaped from the primary tumor or the metastasis into the blood and they play a major role in the initiation of metastasis and tumor recurrence. Thus, it is widely accepted that CTC is the main target of liquid biopsy. In the past few decades, the separation of CTC based on the electrochemical method has attracted widespread attention due to its convenience, rapidness, low cost, high sensitivity, and no need for complex instruments and equipment. At present, CTC detection is not widely used in the clinic due to various reasons. Point-of-care CTC detection provides us with a possibility, which is sensitive, fast, cheap, and easy to operate. More importantly, the testing instrument is small and portable, and the testing does not require specialized laboratories and specialized clinical examiners. In this review, we summarized the latest developments in the electrochemical-based CTC detection and point-of-care CTC detection, and discussed the challenges and possible trends.
