Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Nanocrystals as Interface Modification Layer for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite nanocrystals are advantageous for interfacial passivation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the insulating long alkyl chain surface ligands impede the charge transfer, while the conventional ligand exchange would possibly introduce surface defects to the nanocrystals. In this work, we reported novel in situ modification of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals using a short chain conjugated molecule 2-methoxyphenylethylammonium iodide (2-MeO-PEAI) for interfacial passivation of PSCs. Transmission electron microscopy studies with atomic resolution unveil the transformation from cubic CsPbBr3 to Ruddlesden-Popper phase (RPP) nanocrystals due to halogen exchange. Synergic passivation by the RPP nanocrystals and 2-MeO-PEA+ has led to suppressed interface defects and enhanced charge carrier transport. Consequently, PSCs with in situ modified RPP nanocrystals achieved a champion power conversion efficiency of 24.39%, along with an improvement in stability. This work brings insights into the microstructural evolution of perovskite nanocrystals, providing a novel and feasible approach for interfacial passivation of PSCs.

Two-dimensional lead halide perovskite lateral homojunctions enabled by phase pinning

Two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites possess diverse structural polymorphs with versatile physical properties, which can be controlled by order-disorder transition of the spacer cation, making them attractive for constructing semiconductor homojunctions. Here, we demonstrate a space-cation-dopant-induced phase stabilization approach to creating a lateral homojunction composed of ordered and disordered phases within a two-dimensional perovskite. By doping a small quantity of pentylammonium into (butylammonium)2PbI4 or vice versa, we effectively suppress the ordering transition of the spacer cation and the associated out-of-plane octahedral tilting in the inorganic framework, resulting in phase pining of the disordered phase when decreasing temperature or increasing pressure. This enables epitaxial growth of a two-dimensional perovskite homojunction with tunable optical properties under temperature and pressure stimuli, as well as directional exciton diffusion across the interface. Our results demonstrate a previously unexplored strategy for constructing two-dimensional perovskite heterostructures by thermodynamic tuning and spacer cation doping.

Multiscale architecture design of 3D printed biodegradable Zn-based porous scaffolds for immunomodulatory osteogenesis

Reconciling the dilemma between rapid degradation and overdose toxicity is challenging in biodegradable materials when shifting from bulk to porous materials. Here, we achieve significant bone ingrowth into Zn-based porous scaffolds with 90% porosity via osteoinmunomodulation. At microscale, an alloy incorporating 0.8 wt% Li is employed to create a eutectoid lamellar structure featuring the LiZn4 and Zn phases. This microstructure optimally balances high strength with immunomodulation effects. At mesoscale, surface pattern with nanoscale roughness facilitates filopodia formation and macrophage spreading. At macroscale, the isotropic minimal surface G unit exhibits a proper degradation rate with more uniform feature compared to the anisotropic BCC unit. In vivo, the G scaffold demonstrates a heightened efficiency in promoting macrophage polarization toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype, subsequently leading to significantly elevated osteogenic markers, increased collagen deposition, and enhanced new bone formation. In vitro, transcriptomic analysis reveals the activation of JAK/STAT pathways in macrophages via up regulating the expression of Il-4, Il-10, subsequently promoting osteogenesis.

Artemisinin reduces PTSD-like symptoms, improves synaptic plasticity, and inhibits apoptosis in rats subjected to single prolonged stress

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a chronic mental disorder characterized by symptoms of panic and anxiety, depression, impaired cognitive functioning, and difficulty in social interactions. While the effect of the traditional Chinese medicine artemisinin (AR) on PTSD is unknown, its therapeutic benefits have been demonstrated by studies on models of multiple neurological disorders. This study aimed to extend such findings by investigating the effects of AR administration on a rat model of PTSD induced by a regimen of single prolonged stress (SPS). After rats were subjected to the SPS protocol, AR was administered and its impact on PTSD-like behaviors was evaluated. In the present study, rats were subjected to a multitude of behavioral tests to evaluate behaviors related to anxiety, memory function, and social interactions. The expression of hippocampal synaptic plasticity-related proteins was detected using Western blot and immunofluorescence. The ultrastructure of synapses was observed under transmission electron microscopy. The apoptosis of hippocampal neurons was examined with Western blot, TUNEL staining, and HE staining. The results showed that AR administration alleviated the PTSD-like phenotypes in SPS rats, including behavior indicative of anxiety, cognitive deficits, and diminished sociability. AR administration was further observed to improve synaptic plasticity and inhibit neuronal apoptosis in SPS rats. These findings suggest that administering AR after the onset of severe traumatic events may alleviate anxiety, cognitive deficits, and impaired social interaction, improve synaptic plasticity, and diminish neuronal apoptosis. Hence, the present study provides evidence for AR's potential as a multi-target agent in the treatment of PTSD.

Exosome-Derived Cargos in Immune Microenvironment in Esophageal Carcinoma: A Mini-Review

Esophageal carcinoma, a lethal malignancy with limited treatment options and poor prognosis, necessitates understanding its underlying mechanisms and identifying novel therapeutic targets. Recent studies have highlighted the critical role of the immune microenvironment in esophageal carcinoma, particularly the interplay between tumor cells and immune cells mediated by exosomes and their cargos. Exosomes, small extracellular vesicles secreted by various cells, including tumor cells, facilitate intercellular communication by transferring bioactive molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids to recipient cells. In the context of esophageal carcinoma, tumor-derived exosomes have been shown to play a significant role in shaping the immune microenvironment. In esophageal carcinoma, exosomal cargos have been found to modulate immune cell function and impact tumor progression. These cargos can carry immune inhibitory molecules, such as programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), to suppress T-cell activity and promote immune evasion by tumor cells. Furthermore, exosomal cargos can activate antigen- presenting cells, enhancing their ability to present tumor-specific antigens to T cells and thereby promoting anti-tumor immune responses. Additionally, the cargos of exosomes have been implicated in the induction of immune regulatory T cells (Tregs) and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) within the esophageal carcinoma microenvironment. These immunosuppressive effectors inhibit the activity of T cells, contributing to tumor immune evasion and resistance to immune therapies. In summary, exosomes and their cargo play a crucial role in the immune microenvironment of esophageal carcinoma. Understanding the mechanisms by which exosomal cargos regulate immune cell function and tumor progression may reveal novel therapeutic targets for this devastating disease.

Achieving Colorful Ultralong Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence by Precise Modification of Nitrogen Atoms on Phosphorescence Units

We successfully tune ultralong organic room-temperature phosphorescence (UORTP) by a simple strategy of precisely modifying nitrogen atoms on Phosphorescence Units, and colorful ultralong phosphorescence can be achieved. We for the first time investigate the structure-function relationship between phosphorescence properties and molecular structures of Phosphorescence Units. With BCz and BCz-1 as comparison, eight new Phosphorescence Units were synthesized by introducing one or two nitrogen atoms to the naphthalene moiety. For all the 10 Phosphorescence Units, their room-temperature ultralong phosphorescence in the PMMA film should be assigned to monomer phosphorescence from intrinsic T1 decay. For Phosphorescence Units series I (BCz, NBCz-1, NBCz-2, NBCz-3, NBCz-4, NBCz-5, and NBCz-6), introducing one nitrogen atom to the naphthalene moiety can significantly affect the phosphorescence properties of Phosphorescence Units, and the effect is quite complicated. For modification on the inner ring, the T1 energy level of NBCz-1 decreases, and the red shift of UORTP occurs while the T1 energy level of NBCz-2 increases and the blue shift of UORTP happens. For modification on the outer ring, no phosphorescence color change is observed for NBCz-3 and NBCz-4, but their phosphorescence lifetimes vary notably due to different intersystem crossing efficiencies; as the modification site approaches the central five-member ring, the T1 energy levels of NBCz-5 and NBCz-6 decrease, and their UORTP red shifts dramatically. For Phosphorescence Units series II (BCz, 2NBCz, BCz-1, and 2NBCz-1), introducing two nitrogen atoms to the outer six-member ring reduces energy level of T1 excitons and leads to incredible red shift of UORTP for BCz and 2NBCz while surprisingly energy levels of T1 excitons rise and UORTP blue shifts for BCz-1 and 2NBCz-1. Under the condition of proper modification sites, it is true that the more the additional nitrogen atoms, the more red-shifted the ultralong phosphorescence. This study may expand our knowledge of organic phosphorescence and lay the foundation for its future applications.

Tests of Light-Lepton Universality in Angular Asymmetries of B^{0}→D^{*-}ℓν Decays

We present the first comprehensive tests of the universality of the light leptons in the angular distributions of semileptonic B^{0}-meson decays to charged spin-1 charmed mesons. We measure five angular-asymmetry observables as functions of the decay recoil that are sensitive to lepton-universality-violating contributions. We use events where one neutral B is fully reconstructed in ϒ(4S)→BB[over ¯] decays in data corresponding to 189  fb^{-1} integrated luminosity from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. We find no significant deviation from the standard model expectations.

Precise Measurement of the D_{s}^{+} Lifetime at Belle II

We measure the lifetime of the D_{s}^{+} meson using a data sample of 207  fb^{-1} collected by the Belle II experiment running at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The lifetime is determined by fitting the decay-time distribution of a sample of 116×10^{3} D_{s}^{+}→ϕπ^{+} decays. Our result is τ_{D_{s}^{+}}=(499.5±1.7±0.9)  fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is significantly more precise than previous measurements.

The mediating role of negative emotions in the relationship between smoking and health-related quality of life among Chinese individuals: A cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION

Although the negative impact of smoking on health has been confirmed in various studies, few have explored psychological factors mediating the relationship between smoking and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between smoking and HRQOL in the Chinese population and the mediating role of negative emotions (NEs).

METHODS

Survey data were derived from a cross-sectional study conducted in China from 20 June to 31 August 2022. We recruited participants from 148 cities across the country using a stratified multistage sampling method. The HRQOL of the dependent variable was measured using the Chinese version of European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D-5L). The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4) were used to measure NE parameters including depression, anxiety, and perceived stress, as the intermediate variables. A multiple parallel mediation model was used to analyze the mediating role of NEs in smoking and HRQOL.

RESULTS

A total of 21916 valid questionnaires were collected, of which 3010 (13.7%) and 18906 (86.3%) were categorized into smokers and non-smokers, respectively. The HRQOL (EQ-VAS score) of smokers (71.70 ± 23.08) was lower than that of non-smokers (73.69 ± 21.32), whereas the depression and anxiety levels of smokers were higher than those of non-smokers (all p<0.001). Moreover, smoking, NEs (depression and anxiety), and HRQOL showed pairwise correlations. According to the mediation analysis, depression (β= -0.461; 95% BCa CI: -0.664 - -0.268) and anxiety (β= -0.279; 95% BCa CI: -0.435 - -0.138) mediated the relationship between smoking and HRQOL after adjusting for demographic and life factors.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings emphasize the necessity of studying the interaction between smoking, HRQOL, and Nes, and complementing the research on the impact of psychological factors on the HRQOL of smokers. Public health activities should focus on mental health and take targeted measures for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of smokers.

Efficacy and Safety of Ferric Citrate on Hyperphosphatemia among Chinese Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Phase III Multicenter Randomized Open-Label Active-Drug-Controlled Study

INTRODUCTION

Hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients is positively associated with mortality. Ferric citrate is a potent phosphorus binder that lowers serum phosphorus level and improves iron metabolism. We compared its efficacy and safety with active drugs in Chinese CKD patients with hemodialysis.

METHODS

Chinese patients undergoing hemodialysis were randomized into two treatment groups in a 1:1 ratio, receiving either ferric citrate or sevelamer carbonate, respectively, for 12 weeks. Serum phosphorus levels, calcium concentration, and iron metabolism parameters were evaluated every 2 weeks. Frequency and severity of adverse events were recorded.

RESULTS

217 (90.4%) patients completed the study with balanced demographic and baseline characteristics between two groups. Ferric citrate decreased the serum phosphorus level to 0.59 ± 0.54 mmol/L, comparable to 0.56 ± 0.62 mmol/L by sevelamer carbonate. There was no significant difference between two groups (p > 0.05) in the proportion of patients with serum phosphorus levels reaching the target range, the response rate to the study drug, and the changes of corrected serum calcium concentrations, and intact-PTH levels at the end of treatment. The change of iron metabolism indicators in the ferric citrate group was significantly higher than those in the sevelamer carbonate group. There are 47 (40.5%) patients in the ferric citrate group, and 26 (21.3%) patients in the sevelamer carbonate group experienced drug-related treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs); most were mild and tolerable. Common drug-related TEAEs were gastrointestinal disorders, including diarrhea (12.9 vs. 2.5%), fecal discoloration (14.7 vs. 0%), and constipation (1.7 vs. 7.4%) in ferric citrate and sevelamer carbonate group.

CONCLUSION

Ferric citrate capsules have good efficacy and safety in the control of hyperphosphatemia in adult patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. Efficacy is not inferior to sevelamer carbonate. The TEAEs were mostly mild and tolerated by the patients.

A functional nucleic acid-based fluorescence sensing platform based on DNA supersandwich nanowires and cation exchange reaction

Accurate and sensitive analysis of p53 DNA is important for early diagnosis of cancer. In this work, a fluorescence sensing system based on DNA supersandwich nanowires and cation exchange (CX)-triggered multiplex signal amplification was constructed for the detection of p53 DNA. In the presence of p53 DNA, the DNA self-assembles to form a DNA supersandwich nanowire that generates long double-stranded DNA. Subsequently, the cation exchange (CX) reaction between ZnS and Ag+ was utilized to release free Zn2+. With the participation of Zn2+, DNAzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of numerous catalytic molecular beacons, resulting in a greatly enhanced fluorescence signal due to the cycling of DNAzyme. The fluorescence values increased in proportion to the concentrations of p53 DNA in the range of 10 pM to 200 nM, and a detection limit (LOD) of 2.34 pM (S/N = 3) was obtained. This method provides an effective strategy for the quantitative detection of p53 DNA.

Search for a τ^{+}τ^{-} Resonance in e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}τ^{+}τ^{-} Events with the Belle II Experiment

We report the first search for a nonstandard-model resonance decaying into τ pairs in e^{+}e^{-}→μ^{+}μ^{-}τ^{+}τ^{-} events in the 3.6-10  GeV/c^{2} mass range. We use a 62.8  fb^{-1} sample of e^{+}e^{-} collisions collected at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. The analysis probes three different models predicting a spin-1 particle coupling only to the heavier lepton families, a Higgs-like spin-0 particle that couples preferentially to charged leptons (leptophilic scalar), and an axionlike particle, respectively. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into τ pairs, ranging from 0.7 to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5  GeV/c^{2} and for the axionlike particle model over the entire mass range.

Measurement of CP Violation in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{0} Decays at Belle II

We report a measurement of the CP-violating parameters C and S in B^{0}→K_{S}^{0}π^{0} decays at Belle II using a sample of 387×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] events recorded in e^{+}e^{-} collisions at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the ϒ(4S) resonance. These parameters are determined by fitting the proper decay-time distribution of a sample of 415 signal events. We obtain C=-0.04_{-0.15}^{+0.14}±0.05 and S=0.75_{-0.23}^{+0.20}±0.04, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Effect of perylene assembly shapes on photoelectrochemical properties and ultrasensitive biosensing behaviors toward dopamine

In this study, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on perylene diimide derivatives (PDIs) was developed for the ultrasensitive quantification of dopamine (DA). PDIs were able to form self-assembled semiconductor nanostructures by strong π-π stacking, suitable for photoactive substances. Moreover, the shape of the PDI significantly affected the PEC properties of these nanostructures. The results showed that amino PDI with two-dimensional (2D) wrinkled layered nanostructures exhibited superior PEC properties relative to one-dimensional (1D) nanorods and fiber-based nanostructures (methyl and carboxyl PDIs). Based on these results, a mechanism for PEC sensor action was then proposed. The presence of 2D amino-PDI resulted in accelerated charge separation and transport. Furthermore, dopamine acted as effective electron donor to cause an increase in photocurrent. The as-obtained sensor was then used to detect small molecules like DA. A blue light optimized sensor at an applied potential of 0.7 V showed a detection limit of 1.67 nM with a wide linear range of 5 nM to 10 μM. On the other hand, the sensor presented acceptable reliability in determining DA in real samples. A recovery rate between 97.99 and 101.0% was obtained. Overall, controlling the morphology of semiconductors can influence PEC performance, which is a useful finding for the future development of PEC sensors.

Biological calcium carbonate enhanced the ability of biochar to passivate antimony and lead in soil

The mechanism of immobilization of heavy metals in the soil using biochar has been studied extensively. However, the decomposition of biochar by biological and abiotic factors can reactivate the immobilized heavy metals in soil. Previous research showed that the addition of biological calcium carbonate (bio-CaCO3) can significantly increase the stability of biochar. However, the influence of bio-CaCO3 on the ability of biochar to immobilize heavy metals remains unclear. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of bio-CaCO3 on the use of biochar to immobilize the cationic heavy metal lead and the anionic heavy metal antimony. The addition of bio-CaCO3 not only significantly improved the passivation ability of Pb and Sb but also reduced their migration in the soil. Mechanistic studies have shown that the reasons for the enhanced ability of biochar to immobilize heavy metals can be summarized in three aspects. First, the introduced inorganic component CaCO3 can precipitate and exchange ions with lead and antimony. Second, the N element in the organic component of bio-CaCO3 underwent polycondensation with the organic carbon in biochar to form pyridine N and pyrrole N structures, which can form a strong complex with lead and antimony. Pyridine N complexes more strongly than pyrrole N. Third, bio-CaCO3 increased the degree of aromatization and the surface π-electron density of biochar, which enhanced the ability of biochar to adsorb heavy metals. This study will provide a new concept for the application of biochar as an amendment to remediate heavy metals in the soil.

Tislelizumab plus chemotherapy for patients with EGFR-mutated non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer who progressed on EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy

BACKGROUND

Treatment options are limited for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after treatment failure with EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). This multicenter open-label, phase II study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tislelizumab plus chemotherapy (cohort 1, TIS+chemo) or tislelizumab plus chemotherapy and bevacizumab (cohort 2, TIS+chemo+ beva) in EGFR-mutated non-squamous NSCLC patients who progressed on EGFR TKI therapies. Here, the primary analysis of the TIS+chemo cohort is reported.

METHODS

In the TIS+chemo cohort, patients with EGFR-sensitizing mutations with prior EGFR TKI failure received tislelizumab plus carboplatin and nab-paclitaxel as induction treatment, followed by maintenance with tislelizumab plus pemetrexed. The primary endpoint was 1-year progression-free survival (PFS) rate. The planned sample size was 66 with a historical control of 7%, an expected value of 20%, a one-sided α of 0.05, and a power of 85%.

RESULTS

Between July 11, 2020 and December 13, 2021, 69 patients were enrolled. As of June 30, 2022, the median follow-up was 8.2 months. Among the 62 patients in the efficacy analysis set, estimated 1-year PFS rate was 23.8% (90% CI 13.1% to 36.2%), and its lower bound of 90% CI was higher than the historical control of chemotherapy (7%), which met the primary endpoint. The median PFS was 7.6 (95% CI 6.4 to 9.8) months. Median overall survival (OS) was not reached (95% CI 14.0 to not estimable), with a 1-year OS rate of 74.5% (95% CI 56.5% to 86.0%). The objective response rate and disease control rate were 56.5% (95% CI 43.3% to 69.0%) and 87.1% (95% CI 76.1% to 94.3%), respectively. Patients who had progressed on first-generation/second-generation and third-generation EGFR-TKIs at baseline had shorter PFS than those who progressed on first-generation/second-generation EGFR-TKIs (median 7.5 vs 9.8 months, p=0.031). Patients with positive ctDNA had shorter PFS (median 7.4 vs 12.3 months, p=0.031) than those with negative ctDNA. No grade 5 treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were observed. Grades 3-4 TEAEs occurred in 40.6% (28/69) of patients. Grades 3-4 immune-related AEs occurred in 5 (7.2%) patients.

CONCLUSION

The study met the primary endpoint for the TIS+chemo cohort. Tislelizumab plus chemotherapy is effective with an acceptable safety profile for EGFR-mutated non-squamous NSCLC after EGFR TKI failure.

First Measurement of the Michel Parameter ξ^{'} in the τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ} Decay at Belle

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter ξ^{'} in the τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ} decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}ν_{τ} events with subsequent muon decay in flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of 988  fb^{-1} collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately 912×10^{6} τ^{+}τ^{-} pairs. We measure ξ^{'}=0.22±0.94(stat)±0.42(syst), which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of ξ^{'}=1. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.

Search for the Lepton Flavor Violating Decays B^{+}→K^{+}τ^{±}ℓ^{∓} (ℓ=e, μ) at Belle

We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decays B^{+}→K^{+}τ^{±}ℓ^{∓}, with ℓ=(e,μ), using the full data sample of 772×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We use events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. We find no evidence for B^{±}→K^{±}τℓ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the (1-3)×10^{-5} range. The obtained limits are the world's best results.

Influence of social support on subjective well-being of patients with chronic diseases in China: chain-mediating effect of self-efficacy and perceived stress

Introduction

The well-being of patients with chronic diseases is an issue of widespread concern in public health. While social support is thought to have a positive effect on it, the mechanisms of its influence have not been fully addressed. Thus, we explored the possible mediating effects of self-efficacy and perceived stress to determine the relationship between social support and well-being in these patients.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 4,657 patients with chronic diseases in China. The PROCESS Macro model 6 of SPSS was employed to explore the intermediary role between variables.

Results

Self-efficacy and perceived stress played a partial intermediary role between social support and subjective well-being, with an effect ratio of 48.25% and 23.61%, respectively. Self-efficacy and perceived stress had a chain intermediary effect (28.14%) between social support and subjective well-being.

Discussion

This study suggested that improving the self-efficacy of patients with chronic diseases to cope with the changes in social support caused by the disease could reduce stress and enhance subjective well-being.

Correlating Photophysical Properties with Stereochemical Expression of ns2 Lone Pairs in Two-dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have shown great promises for light-emitting applications and excitonic devices. Fulfilling these promises demands an in-depth understanding on the relationships between structural dynamics and exciton-phonon interactions that govern optical properties. Here, we unveil the structural dynamics of 2D lead iodide perovskites with different spacer cations. Loose packing of an undersized spacer cation leads to out-of-plane octahedral tilting, whereas compact packing of an oversized spacer cation stretches Pb-I bond length, resulting in Pb2+ off-center displacement driven by stereochemical expression of the Pb2+ 6s2 lone pair electrons. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the Pb2+ cation is off-center displaced mainly along the direction where the octahedra are stretched the most by the spacer cation. We find dynamic structural distortions associated with either octahedral tilting or Pb2+ off-centering lead to a broad Raman central peak and phonon softening, which increase non-radiative recombination loss via exciton-phonon interaction and quench the photoluminescence intensity. The correlations between structural, phonon, and optical properties are further confirmed by the pressure tuning of the 2D LHPs. Our results demonstrate that minimizing the dynamic structural distortions via a judicious selection of the spacer cations is essential to realize high luminescence properties in 2D LHPs.

Diagnosis of tuberculous uveitis by the macrogenome of intraocular fluid: A case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND

Tuberculous uveitis caused by tuberculosis infection factors is common, but tuberculous uveitis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis found in the intraocular fluid is rare. This report describes the use of intraocular fluid in the diagnosis of tuberculous uveitis in a patient and reviews the relevant literature.

CASE SUMMARY

A 24-year-old woman who was 31-wk pregnant visited Hebei Chest Hospital due to intermittent chest pain, fever, and decreased vision for 3 mo. The hydrothorax test suggested “tuberculous pleurisy”, and yellow effusion was extracted from the chest tube twice resulting in a total volume of approximately 800 mL. The patient chose to continue the pregnancy without treatment, and was hospitalized again due to high fever. Following 2 mo of anti-tuberculosis treatment, a healthy boy was delivered by cesarean section. Tuberculous uveitis was diagnosed using tuberculosis Xpert, and intraocular infection was detected by second-generation gene sequencing. Following systemic treatment, the patient gradually improved, and the corrected visual acuity of the left eye gradually increased from 0.08 to 1.0.

CONCLUSION

The etiology of uveitis is complex, and it is necessary to assess the patient’s general condition and apply molecular biology methods to determine the pathogenesis and guide precise treatment, to improve clinicians’ awareness and standardize treatment of the disease.

First Measurement of the B^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}π^{0} Branching Fraction and CP Asymmetry

We study B^{+}→π^{+}π^{0}π^{0} using 711  fb^{-1} of data collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We measure an inclusive branching fraction of (19.0±1.5±1.4)×10^{-6} and an inclusive CP asymmetry of (9.2±6.8±0.7)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic, and a B^{+}→ρ(770)^{+}π^{0} branching fraction of (11.2±1.1±0.9_{-1.6}^{+0.8})×10^{-6}, where the third uncertainty is due to possible interference with B^{+}→ρ(1450)^{+}π^{0}. We present the first observation of a structure around 1  GeV/c^{2} in the π^{0}π^{0} mass spectrum, with a significance of 6.4σ, and measure a branching fraction to be (6.9±0.9±0.6)×10^{-6}. We also report a measurement of local CP asymmetry in this structure.

Advances in the application of label-free quantitative proteomic techniques in malignancy research

Proteomics is the scientific discipline that deals with the protein composition of cells, tissues, and organisms and their patterns of change. It is considered an invaluable tool for tackling many challenges faced in medicine and biology. Among the available approaches, label-free quantitative proteomic techniques are extensively used to study malignant tumors due to their low cost, simple operation, and short cycle time. As a result, it provides a novel approach to explore the pathogenesis, diagnostic markers, and targeted drugs of malignant tumors. Here, we summarize the research progress and potential of label-free quantitative proteomics and discuss the application of such techniques in the research of malignancies.

[Efficacy and influencing factors of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy and bevacizumab in patients with non-small cell lung cancer after epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors treatment failure]

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and influencing factors of immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy and bevacizumab in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who failed epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) treatment. Methods: A retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data of 60 NSCLC patients who were treated with immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy and bevacizumab after EGFR-TKIs treatment failure in the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Shandong First Medical University from January 2019 to March 2022. Patients were followed up by telephone or outpatient review up to October 1, 2022, with a median follow-up of 8.2 months (95%CI: 7.1-9.3). All 60 patients were followed up. The response evaluation criteria in solid tumors were used to evaluate the short-term efficacy. The adverse reactions of patients were evaluated according to the common terminology criteria for adverse events. The survival curve was drawn by Kaplan-Meier method. Cox proportional hazard regression models were utilized to analyze the influencing factors of progression-free survival (PFS). Results: Among the 60 NSCLC patients, 22 were males. The age ranged from 41 to 75 years, with a median age of 61 years. Eleven patients had partial response, 19 patients had stable disease and 30 patients had progressive disease. The median PFS was 8.2 months (95%CI: 7.2-9.2). The median PFS of patients with low expression of programmed death receptor-ligand 1 (PD-L1) [Tumor cell Proportion Score (TPS)<1%], moderate expression of PD-L1 (1%≤TPS≤49%), and high expression of PD-L1 (TPS≥50%) were 6.4 (95%CI: 4.8-8.0), 8.3 (95%CI: 7.3-9.3) and 10.6 months (95%CI: 7.2-14.1), respectively, and there were statistically significant differences (χ²=13.58, P<0.001). Multivariate Cox proportional risk regression model analysis showed that age>65 years old (HR=4.017, 95%CI: 1.468-10.992, P=0.007) was a risk factor for PFS in NSCLC patients who received immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy and bevacizumab after EGFR-TKIs treatment failure. Moderate expression of PD-L1 (HR=0.360, 95%CI: 0.139-0.930, P=0.035) and high expression of PD-L1 (HR=0.155, 95%CI: 0.039-0.625, P=0.009) were protective factors for PFS. Most of the treatment-related adverse reactions in the whole group were grade 1-2, including bone marrow suppression (n=24), nausea (n=25), decreased appetite (n=24), fatigue (n=22), vomiting (n=18), abnormal liver function (n=17), blood creatinine increased (n=10), and so on. These were tolerated by the patients. Conclusions: NSCLC patients who failed EGFR-TKIs treatment can tolerate adverse reactions related to immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy and bevacizumab treatment. PFS is significantly prolonged in those aged≤65 years and those with moderate and high expression of PD-L1.

Effects of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and biochar on plant growth and fruit quality of muskmelon under cadmium stress

Cadmium pollution in farmland has become a global environmental problem, threatening ecological security and human health. Biochar is effective in remediation of soil pollution. However, high concentrations of biochar can inhibit plant growth, and low concentrations of biochar have limited mitigation effect on cadmium toxicity. Therefore, the combination of low-concentration biochar and other amendments is a promising approach to alleviate cadmium toxicity in plants and improve the safety of edible parts. In this study, muskmelon was selected as the research object, and different concentrations of α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles were used alone or combined with biochar to explore the effects of different treatments on muskmelon plants in cadmium-contaminated soil. The results showed that the combined application of 250 mg/kg α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles and biochar had a good effect on the repair of cadmium toxicity in muskmelon plants. Compared with cadmium treatment, its application increased plant height by 32.53%, cadmium transport factor from root to stem decreased by 32.95%, chlorophyll content of muskmelon plants increased by 14.27%, and cadmium content in muskmelon flesh decreased by 18.83%. Moreover, after plant harvest, soil available cadmium content in 250 mg/kg α-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles and biochar combined treatment decreased by 31.18% compared with cadmium treatment. The results of this study provide an effective reference for the composite application of different exogenous amendments and a feasible idea for soil heavy metal remediation and mitigation of cadmium pollution in farmland.

Pain management in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation: A retrospective study

BACKGROUND

Pain after transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE) can seriously affect the prognosis of patients and the insertion of additional medical resources.

AIM

To develop an early warning model for predicting pain after TACE to enable the implementation of preventive analgesic measures.

METHODS

We retrospectively collected the clinical data of 857 patients (from January 2016 to January 2020) and prospectively enrolled 368 patients (from February 2020 to October 2022; as verification cohort) with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who received TACE in the Hepatic Surgery Center of Tongji Hospital. Five predictive models were established using machine learning algorithms, namely, random forest model (RFM), support vector machine model, artificial neural network model, naive Bayes model and decision tree model. The efficacy of these models in predicting postoperative pain was evaluated through receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, decision curve analysis and clinical impact curve analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 24 candidate variables were included in the predictive models using the iterative algorithms. Age, preoperative pain, number of embolised tumours, distance from the liver capsule, dosage of iodised oil and preoperative prothrombin activity were closely associated with postoperative pain. The accuracy of the predictive model was compared between the training [area under the curve (AUC) = 0.798; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.745-0.851] and verification (AUC = 0.871; 95%CI: 0.818-0.924) cohorts, with RFM having the best predictive efficiency (training cohort: AUC = 0.869, 95%CI: 0.816-0.922; internal verification cohort: AUC = 0.871; 95%CI: 0.818-0.924).

CONCLUSION

The five predictive models based on advanced machine learning algorithms, especially RFM, can accurately predict the risk of pain after TACE in patients with HCC. RFM can be used to assess the risk of pain for facilitating preventive treatment and improving the prognosis.

Observation of e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{bJ}(1P) and Search for X_{b}→ωϒ(1S) at sqrt[s] near 10.75 GeV

We study the processes e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{bJ}(1P) (J=0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies sqrt[s]=10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, respectively. These data were collected with the Belle II detector during special operations of the SuperKEKB collider above the ϒ(4S) resonance. We report the first observation of ωχ_{bJ}(1P) signals at sqrt[s]=10.745  GeV. By combining Belle II data with Belle results at sqrt[s]=10.867  GeV, we find energy dependencies of the Born cross sections for e^{+}e^{-}→ωχ_{b1,b2}(1P) to be consistent with the shape of the ϒ(10753) state. These data indicate that the internal structures of the ϒ(10753) and ϒ(10860) states may differ. Including data at sqrt[s]=10.653  GeV, we also search for the bottomonium equivalent of the X(3872) state decaying into ωϒ(1S). No significant signal is observed for masses between 10.45 and 10.65  GeV/c^{2}.

Ratiometrically homogeneous electrochemical biosensor based on the signal amplified strategy of dual DNA nanomachines for microRNA analysis

Precise and sensitive microRNA (miRNA) analysis is very significant for early disease diagnosis. In this work, a dual DNA nanomachines-based homogeneous electrochemical biosensor was constructed for the sensitively ratiometric detection of miRNA by a nicking enzyme (Nt.AlwI)-assisted cycling signal amplification strategy. The Co-based metal organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) and toluidine blue (TB) were employed as signal probes and internal reference probes, respectively. The introduction of internal reference probes can actually calibrate the interferent factors of the analytical system to improve the stability in detection procedure. In addition, with the help of the magnetic separation technique, the homogeneous electrochemical biosensor provides a more simpler way for the development of immobilization-free electrochemical miRNA biosensors, avoiding the complex modification procedure of traditional electrochemical biosensing interfaces. Consequently, taking advantages of this proposed dual DNA nanomachines-based homogeneous electrochemical biosensor, the highly sensitive and selective detection of miRNA-141 as model could be accomplished in ranging from 1 fM to 10 nM with detection limit of 0.46 fM. This strategy exhited good sensitivity and stability to integrate the nicking enzyme-powered dual DNA nanomachines with the ratiometric electrochemical output modes, which open new opportunities for the sensitive and reliable diagnosis of miRNA-related diseases.

Measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} Lifetime

An absolute measurement of the Λ_{c}^{+} lifetime is reported using Λ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+} decays in events reconstructed from data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The total integrated luminosity of the data sample, which was collected at center-of-mass energies at or near the ϒ(4S) resonance, is 207.2  fb^{-1}. The result, τ(Λ_{c}^{+})=203.20±0.89±0.77  fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise measurement to date and is consistent with previous determinations.

Evidence of a New Excited Charmed Baryon Decaying to Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}

We present the study of B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}p[over ¯] decays based on 772×10^{6}  BB[over ¯] events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. The Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++} candidates are reconstructed via their decay to Λ_{c}^{+}π^{∓} and Λ_{c}^{+} decays to pK^{-}π^{+}, pK_{S}^{0}, and Λπ^{+} final states. The corresponding branching fractions are measured to be B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+}p[over ¯])=(1.09±0.06±0.07)×10^{-4} and B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-}p[over ¯])=(1.84±0.11±0.12)×10^{-4}, which are consistent with the world average values with improved precision. A new structure is found in the M_{Σ_{c}(2455)^{0,++}π^{±}} spectrum with a significance of 4.2σ including systematic uncertainty. The structure is possibly an excited Λ_{c}^{+} and is tentatively named Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}. Its mass and width are measured to be (2913.8±5.6±3.8)  MeV/c^{2} and (51.8±20.0±18.8)  MeV, respectively. The products of branching fractions for the Λ_{c}(2910)^{+} are measured to be B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}p[over ¯])×B(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{0}π^{+})=(9.5±3.6±1.6)×10^{-6} and B(B[over ¯]^{0}→Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}p[over ¯])×B(Λ_{c}(2910)^{+}→Σ_{c}(2455)^{++}π^{-})=(1.24±0.35±0.10)×10^{-5}. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Phonon-assisted upconversion in twisted two-dimensional semiconductors

Phonon-assisted photon upconversion (UPC) is an anti-Stokes process in which incident photons achieve higher energy emission by absorbing phonons. This letter studies phonon-assisted UPC in twisted 2D semiconductors, in which an inverted contrast between UPC and conventional photoluminescence (PL) of WSe₂ twisted bilayer is emergent. A 4-fold UPC enhancement is achieved in 5.5° twisted bilayer while PL weakens by half. Reduced interlayer exciton conversion efficiency driven by lattice relaxation, along with enhanced pump efficiency resulting from spectral redshift, lead to the rotation-angle-dependent UPC enhancement. The counterintuitive phenomenon provides a novel insight into a unique way that twisted angle affects UPC and light-matter interactions in 2D semiconductors. Furthermore, the UPC enhancement platform with various superimposable means offers an effective method for lighting bilayers and expanding the application prospect of 2D stacked van der Waals devices.

PHT427 as an effective New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) inhibitor restored the susceptibility of meropenem against Enterobacteriaceae producing NDM-1

Introduction

With the increasingly serious problem of bacterial drug resistance caused by NDM-1, it is an important strategy to find effective inhibitors to assist β-lactam antibiotic treatment against NDM-1 resistant bacteria. In this study, PHT427 (4-dodecyl-N-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl-benzenesulfonamide) was identified as a novel NDM-1 inhibitor and restored the susceptibility of meropenem against Enterobacteriaceae producing NDM-1.

Methods

We used a high throughput screening model to find NDM-1 inhibitor in the library of small molecular compounds. The interaction between the hit compound PHT427 and NDM-1 was analyzed by fluorescence quenching, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assay, and molecular docking analysis. The efficacy of the compound in combination with meropenem was evaluated by determining the FICIs of Escherichia coli BL21(DE3)/pET30a(+)-bla _NDM-1 and Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical strain C1928 (producing NDM-1). In addition, the mechanism of the inhibitory effect of PHT427 on NDM-1 was studied by site mutation, SPR, and zinc supplementation assays.

Results

PHT427 was identified as an inhibitor of NDM-1. It could significantly inhibit the activity of NDM-1 with an IC₅₀ of 1.42 μmol/L, and restored the susceptibility of meropenem against E. coli BL21(DE3)/pET30a(+)-bla _NDM-1 and K. pneumoniae clinical strain C1928 (producing NDM-1) in vitro. The mechanism study indicated that PHT427 could act on the zinc ions at the active site of NDM-1 and the catalytic key amino acid residues simultaneously. The mutation of Asn220 and Gln123 abolished the affinity of NDM-1 by PHT427 via SPR assay.

Discussion

This is the first report that PHT427 is a promising lead compound against carbapenem-resistant bacteria and it merits chemical optimization for drug development.

2D Hexagonal Assemblies of Amphiphilic Double-Helical Poly(phenylacetylene) Homopolymers with Enhanced Circularly Polarized Luminescence and Chiral Self-Sorting

Two-dimensional (2D) chiral materials have been attracting immense attentions owing to their unique properties. Herein, we successfully developed a unique assembly strategy of amphiphilic homopolymers to construct stable free-standing 2D chiral nanosheets in solution. The amphiphilic poly(phenylacetylene) (PPA) homopolymers bearing the hydrophobic and hydrophilic dendritic side chains adopt a DNA-like double-helical conformation. The regular hexagonal nanosheets were formed in THF/EtOH through nucleation and epitaxial growth. The sizes of the nanosheets can be modulated from nanometers to submillimeters upon varying the ratio of binary solvents, while the thickness is linearly correlated with the molecular weights. The 2D architecture can significantly enhance the CPL of polymers with a high dissymmetry factor ≈0.1. Driven by a discrimination of helical conformation, the PPAs can self-sort into homochiral 2D nanosheets, as directly visualized by using fluorescent microscopy.

Sorafenib plus hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy versus sorafenib alone for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

The combination of sorafenib and hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) is expected to exert a synergistic anticancer effect. We conducted this systematic review to examine the efficacy and safety of sorafenib plus HAIC vs sorafenib alone for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

METHODS

We systematically searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library with the following search terms: "sorafenib," "hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy," "HAIC," "advanced," "hepatocellular carcinoma," and "HCC." Pooled hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs were calculated for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), and we calculated the pooled risk ratios (RRs) and 95% CIs for objective response rate (ORR) and adverse events (AEs).

RESULTS

We found that sorafenib plus HAIC was associated with significantly better OS (HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.37-0.83; P < 0.01), PFS (HR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.27-0.72; P < 0.01), and ORR (RR, 3.77; 95% CI, 1.87-7.58; P < 0.01) than sorafenib alone in advanced HCC. Grade 3/4 AEs were more frequent in the sorafenib plus HAIC group, including leukopenia (RR, 4.54; 95% CI, 1.77-11.64; P < 0.01), neutropenia (RR, 7.81; 95% CI, 3.36-18.16; P < 0.01), thrombocytopenia (RR, 2.97; 95% CI, 1.98-4.46; P < 0.01), anemia (RR, 2.24; 95% CI, 1.22-4.09; P < 0.01), anorexia (RR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.07-5.27; P = 0.03), nausea (RR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.19-7.42; P = 0.02), and vomiting (RR, 3.99; 95% CI, 1.14-14.01; P = 0.03).

CONCLUSION

Sorafenib plus HAIC improved OS, PFS, and ORR compared with sorafenib alone in advanced HCC, with acceptable safety profile.

Body mass index and the risk of abdominal hernia: a Mendelian randomization study

PURPOSE

Abdominal hernia (AH) is one of the most common clinical diseases. A large number of observational studies have found that obesity is an important risk factor for AH. However, the causal relationship between obesity and AH cannot be determined because of the clinical studies on AH induced by obesity are relatively few and only have some small- or medium-scale observational studies. Observational studies have so many confounding factors and reverse causality due to their shortcomings. From an evidence-based medicine perspective, they are not sufficiently convincing. Therefore, there is still a lack of high-quality, evidence-based medical evidence supporting a causal relationship between obesity and AH. A causal relationship between obesity and AH is also almost impossible to confirm by randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Our study based on Mendelian randomization (MR) may provide a higher level of evidence-based medical support for the relationship between obesity and AH. Body mass index (BMI) is the most common measure used for defining obesity. Finally, we employed two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) to explore the causal relationship between BMI and AH.

METHODS

AH-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data were obtained from the FinnGen Biobank (FB), and BMI-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data were obtained from the UK Biobank (UKB). Genetic loci are used as instrumental variables (IVs), methods such as inverse variance weighted (IVW) were used for two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis, and the odds ratio (OR) value was used to evaluate the causal relationship between BMI and AH.

RESULTS

The results of the horizontal pleiotropy test were calculated by Egger-intercept method: p = 0.34 > 0.05. The Cochran Q test of MR-Egger method and IVW method showed heterogeneity P = 0.03 < 0.05, so the IVW random effect model was used as the gold standard. We found a genetically determined 1-standard deviation (SD) increment of BMI causally increased a 66.0% risk of AH (N = 371 SNPs, OR = 1.66, 95% CI 1.46-1.89, p = 1.55E-14) based on the IVW random effect model which was almost consistent with the results of other seven methods.

CONCLUSIONS

Our MR found genetic evidence for BMI and AH. The risk of developing AH increases with the number of BMI. This finding provides further evidence that maintaining a healthy BMI can prevent the development of AH. In addition, clinicians may need to focus on the potential risk of AH on some high-BMI patients.

Modulation of inner filter effect between persistent luminescent particles and 2, 3-diaminophenazine for ratiometric fluorescent assay of ascorbic acid and ascorbate oxidase activity

Ascorbate oxidase (AAO) and ascorbic acid (AA) play an important role in delaying lives senescence and metabolism. In this study, a sensitive ratiometric fluorescence sensing system based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between persistent luminescent particles (PLPs) and 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP), was designed for the detection of AA and AAO activity. Wherein, PLPs emit blue fluorescence at 475 nm with an excitation wavelength of 370 nm. CoOOH nanosheets with oxidase-like activity can oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with orange fluorescence at 558 nm. The generated DAP quenched the fluorescence of PLPs by an inner filter effect (IFE). When AA was introduced to the system, CoOOH nanosheets were destroyed and reduced to Co²⁺, thereby inhibiting the oxidization of OPD and effectively preserving the blue fluorescence of PLPs at 475 nm. Besides, AAO can catalyse AA to produce the oxided dehydroascorbic acid (DHA). The dissipative AA can recover orange fluorescence of DAP with weakening the blue fluorescence of PLPs. Therefore, a sensitive ratio fluorescence sensing strategy was established by using PLPs as the reference signal and DAP as a reported signal for the detection of AA and AAO activity. Under optimal conditions, the obtained linear ranges were 1-45 μM and 1-20 mU/mL, and detection limits were 0.2 μM and 0.25 mU/mL, respectively. Finally, this proposed ratiometric fluorescent analytical strategy was used to detect AA in real samples (lemon, orange, tomato), which exhibited satisfactory results comparing with commercial kit.

Bioinspired Anti-demineralization Enamel Coating for Orthodontics

White spot lesions and enamel cracks are the 2 most prominent diseases that occur after orthodontic treatment and are caused by enamel demineralization from accumulated bacterial biofilms and/or enamel damage caused by the removal of residual adhesive after bracket debonding. Inspired by the self-assembled amelogenin nanoribbons in enamel, we developed an enamel coating with a self-assembling antimicrobial peptide, D-GL13K, to simultaneously reduce demineralization and residual adhesive. The self-assembled amphiphilic nanoribbons significantly increased the hydrophobicity of the etched enamel, which reduced the permeability of the coated enamel surfaces as desired. The antimicrobial activity of this coating was evaluated against Streptococcus mutans by colony-forming unit counting and live/dead assays. The anti-demineralization effect was demonstrated by the reduced demineralization depth analyzed by optical coherence tomography and the increased Vickers hardness. The coatings did not reduce the shear bond strength but significantly reduced the adhesive remnant index score. This bioinspired enamel coating may provide a new strategy for preventing white spot lesions and enamel cracks after orthodontic treatment.

[Relationship of serum uric acid with prediabetes and newly detected type 2 diabetes mellitus]

Objective: To evaluate the relationship of serum uric acid with prediabetes and newly detected type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in adults. Methods: Data were obtained from the baseline investigation of Songjiang Peak-Plan cohort. According to the baseline fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin, the eligible subjects were divided into normal blood sugar group, prediabetes group, and newly detected T2DM group. Unconditional logistic regression model was used to explore the effect of serum uric acid level on prediabetes and newly detected T2DM, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) function was used to explore the nonlinear dose-response relationship of serum uric acid level with the prevalence of prediabetes and newly detected T2DM. Results: A total of 30 375 subjects were included in the analysis, with an average age of (55.36±11.52) years, and 60.2% (18 299) of them were women. The baseline survey found that the prevalence of prediabetes was 38.6% (11 739 cases), and the prevalence of newly detected T2DM was 6.6% (1 992 cases). Logistic regression analysis showed that, in women, for every 10µmol/L increase in serum uric acid, the risk of developing prediabetes and T2DM s increased by 2.4% (OR=1.024, 95%CI: 1.018-1.030), and 1.5% (OR=1.015, 95%CI: 1.005-1.025), respectively; in men, for every 10 µmol/L increase in serum uric acid, the risk of developing prediabetes and T2DM decreased by 0.8% (OR=0.992, 95%CI: 0.987-0.998) and 5.0% (OR=0.950, 95%CI: 0.939-0.960), respectively. The RCS function showed that the serum uric acid level showed a nonlinear dose-response relationship with newly detected T2DM (P=0.017), but not with prediabetes (P=0.670) in women and showed a nonlinear dose-response relationship with both prediabetes (P=0.040) and newly detected T2DM (P<0.001) in men. Conclusions: Adult women are at increased risk of prediabetes and newly detected T2DM with increase of serum uric acid level, and adult men are at decreased risk of newly diagnosed T2DM with the increase of serum uric acid level. There was no significant relationship between serum uric acid level and prediabetes in men.

Stereochemically Active Lone Pairs and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Two-Dimensional Multilayered Tin and Germanium Iodide Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites are promising tunable semiconductors. Previous studies have focused on Pb-based structures, whereas the multilayered Sn- and Ge-based analogues are largely unexplored, even though they potentially exhibit more diverse structural chemistry and properties associated with the more polarizable ns² lone-pair electrons. Herein, we report the synthesis and structures of 2D tin iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇, where BA = n-butylammonium and A = methylammonium, formamidinium, dimethylammonium, guanidinium, or acetamidinium, and those of 2D germanium iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇, where A = methylammonium or formamidinium. By comparing these structures along with their Pb counterparts, we establish correlations between the effect of group IV-cation's lone-pair stereochemical activity on the perovskite crystal structures and the resulting semiconducting properties such as bandgaps and carrier-phonon interactions and nonlinear optical properties. We find that the strength of carrier-phonon interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a more prominent photoluminescence tail on the low-energy side. Moreover, (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇ exhibit strong second harmonic generation with second-order nonlinear coefficients of ∼10 pm V^-1 that are at least 10 times those of Sn counterparts and 100 times those of Pb counterparts. We also report the third-order two-photon absorption coefficients of (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇ to be ∼10 cm MW^-1, which are one order of magnitude larger than those of the Pb counterparts and traditional inorganic semiconductors. These results not only highlight the role of lone-pair activity in linking the compositions and physical properties of 2D halide perovskites but also demonstrate 2D tin and germanium iodide perovskites as promising lead-free alternatives for nonlinear optoelectronic devices.
