Exploring the Effect of Pd on the Oxygen Reduction Performance of Pt by In Situ Raman Spectroscopy

Microwave heating-assisted synthesis of ultrathin platinum-based trimetallic nanosheets as highly stable catalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction in acidic medium

There are currently almost no ternary platinum-based nanosheets used for acidic oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) due to the difficulty in synthesizing ternary nanosheets with high Pt content. In this work, several ultrathin platinum-palladium-copper nanosheets (PtPdCu NSs) with a thickness of around 1.90 nm were prepared via a microwave heating-assisted method. Microwave heating allows a large number of Pt atoms to deposit into PdCu nanosheets, forming Pt-based ternary nanosheets with high Pt content. Among them, Pt38Pd50Cu12 NSs catalyst displays the highest mass activity (MA) measured in 0.1 M HClO4 of 0.932 A/mgPt+Pd which is 8.6 times of that Pt/C. Besides, Pt38Pd50Cu12 NSs catalyst also exhibits excellent stability with an extremely low MA attenuation after 80,000 cycles accelerated durability testing (ADT) tests. In the single cell tests, the Pt38Pd50Cu12 NSs catalyst manifests higher maximum power density of 796 mW cm-2 than Pt/C of 606 mW cm-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the weaker adsorption between Pt and O-species in Pt38Pd50Cu12 NSs leads to a significant enhancement of ORR activity. This study provides a new strategy to design and prepare ultrathin Pt-based trimetallic nanosheets as efficient and durable ORR catalysts.

Synthesis of MnOOH and its application in a supporting hexagonal Pd/C catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

With the expansion of global energy problems and the deepening of research on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media, the development of low cost and high electrocatalytic performance catalysts has become a research hotspot. In this study, a hexagonal Pd-C-MnOOH composite catalyst was prepared by using the triblock copolymer P123 as the reducing agent and protective agent, sucrose as the carbon source and self-made MnOOH as the carrier under hydrothermal conditions. When the Pd load is 20% and the C/MnOOH ratio is 1 : 1, the 20% Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 catalyst obtained by the one-step method has the highest ORR activity and stability in the alkaline system. At 1600 rpm, the limiting diffusion current density and half-wave potential of the 20% Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 electrocatalyst are -4.78 mA cm-2 and 0.84 V, respectively, which are better than those of the commercial 20%Pd/C catalyst. According to the Koutecky-Levich (K-L) equation and the linear fitting results, the electron transfer number of the 20%Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction is 3.8, which is similar to that of a 4-electron process. After 1000 cycles, the limiting diffusion current density of the 20%Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 catalyst is -4.61 mA cm-2, which only decreases by 3.7%, indicating that the 20%Pd-C-MnOOH-1 : 1 catalyst has good stability. The reason for the improvement of the ORR performance of the Pd-C-MnOOH composite catalyst is the improvement of the conductivity of the carbon layer formed by original carbonization, the regular hexagonal highly active Pd particles and the synergistic catalytic effect between Pd and MnOOH. The method of introducing triblock copolymers in the synthesis of oxides and metal-oxide composite catalysts is expected to be extended to other electrocatalysis fields.

Carbon-Based Material-Supported Single-Atom Catalysts for Energy Conversion

In recent years, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with unique electronic structure and coordination environment have attracted much attention due to its maximum atomic efficiency in the catalysis fields. However, it is still a great challenge to rationally regulate the coordination environments of SACs and improve the loading of metal atoms for SACs during catalysis progress. Generally, carbon-based materials with excellent electrical conductivity and large specific surface area are widely used as catalyst supports to stabilize metal atoms. Meanwhile, carbon-based material-supported SACs have also been extensively studied and applied in various energy conversion reactions, such as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR), and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Herein, rational synthesis methods and advanced characterization techniques were introduced and summarized in this review. Then, the theoretical design strategies and construction methods for carbon-based material-supported SACs in electrocatalysis applications were fully discussed, which are of great significance for guiding the coordination regulation and improving the loading of SACs. In the end, the challenges and future perspectives of SACs were proposed, which could largely contribute to the development of single atom catalysts at the turning point.
