Comparison of Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Gas Chromatography-Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry to Traditional High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry for the Identification and Quantification of Halogenated Dioxins and Furans

Simultaneous Determination of Nine Phthalates in Vegetable Oil by Atmospheric Pressure Gas Chromatography with Tandem Mass Spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS)

Although the use of phthalates has been restricted worldwide, they remain an issue due to health concerns. Diet is one of the most important exposure pathways for humans and due to their solubility in oil, phthalates are commonly found in edible oil and food high in fat. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using electron ionization (EI) has been commonly used for the analysis of the phthalates in foodstuffs, including edible oil. However, this method suffers from issues with sensitivity and selectivity, as most phthalates are fragmented to generate a common phthalic anhydride fragment ion at m/z 149. The molecular ion cannot be observed due to strong fragmentation in EI. In contrast, atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) is a soft ionization technique with less fragmentation, whereby the molecular ion can be used as the precursor ion for multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). In this study, a simple and quick method for the determination of phthalates in vegetable oil using APGC-MS/MS was developed, and performance was assessed. The method was based on dilution of the oil in solvent and direct injection without the need for further cleanup. The established method was evaluated for linearity, recovery, precision, method detection limit (MDL), and method quantitation limit (MQL). The obtained MQL in vegetable oil was in the range of 0.015-0.058 mg/kg, despite limiting the injection volume to 1 µL, which is suitable for investigating dietary exposure and future proof against decreases to the regulatory limit. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied to analyze nine phthalates in eight commercially available vegetable oil.

Facile synthesis of hollow microtubular COF as enrichment probe for quantitative detection of ultratrace quinones in mice plasma with APGC-MS/MS

A hollow microtubular covalent organic framework (denoted as TatDha-COF) was synthesized by solvothermal method for the enrichment and determination of quinones. The TatDha-COF showed large specific surface area (2057 m² g^-1), good crystal structure, ordered pore size distribution (2.3 nm), stable chemical properties and good reusability. Accordingly, a simple and efficient method based on dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) and atmospheric pressure gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS) was developed for the determination of quinones in complex samples. The established method demonstrated a wide liner range, good linearity (r>0.9990), high enrichment factors (EFs, 24-69-folds) and low detection limits (LODs, 0.200-30.0 pg L^-1, S/N≥3). On this basis, the suggested method was successfully applied to sensitively detect the eight ultratrace quinones in mice plasma. Overall, the established method has provided a powerful tool for the enrichment and detection of ultratrace quinones in complex samples, presenting the promising application of TatDha-COF in sample pretreatment.

Unintentional formation of mixed chloro-bromo diphenyl ethers (PBCDEs), dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBCDD/Fs) from pyrolysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

This study presents the comprehensive investigation for formation pathways of chloro-bromo-mixed products from the pyrolysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). In the study, a total of 23 PBDEs with bromination levels from mono-to deca-were selected. Each PBDE standard was sealed in the glass vial and then heated under 450 °C in the muffle furnace to simulate the pyrolysis process. The results demonstrated that PBDEs in the glass vials can unintentionally transform into chloro-bromo diphenyl ethers (PBCDEs) and dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans (PBCDD/Fs) during the pyrolysis process. Atmosphere pressure gas chromatography (APGC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used to identify these pyrolysis products, which demonstrated that all investigated nPBDEs (n represents the number of bromine substituents) can unintentionally transform into Cl₁-(n-1)BDEs, Cl₂-(n-2)BDEs, Cl₁-(n-1)BDFs, and Cl₁-(n-3)BDDs, while some nPBDEs can transform into Cl₁-(n-2)PBDD/Fs during pyrolysis. Experimental phenomena assisted with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Cl atom can substitute at C-Br rather than C-H, and Cl₁-(n-1)BDEs can be easily generated by Cl atom attacking at C-Br sites with low energy barriers (3.66-11.9 kcal/mol). In addition, nPBDEs with lower bromination levels are more favorable to generate Cl₁-(n-1)BDEs than those with higher bromination levels. Further DFT calculations suggest that PBDEs are preferentially first transformed into Cl₁-(n-1)BDEs, then subsequentially transform into PBCDD/Fs. We believe the results of this study can greatly improve our understanding of the transformation mechanism from PBDEs to cholo-bromo-mixed products in thermal treatment processes and provide new insight into controlling the emission of toxic cholo-bromo-mixed products.

Nontargeted Screening Using Gas Chromatography-Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometry: Recent Trends and Emerging Potential

Gas chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC–HRMS) is a powerful nontargeted screening technique that promises to accelerate the identification of environmental pollutants. Currently, most GC–HRMS instruments are equipped with electron ionization (EI), but atmospheric pressure ionization (API) ion sources have attracted renewed interest because: (i) collisional cooling at atmospheric pressure minimizes fragmentation, resulting in an increased yield of molecular ions for elemental composition determination and improved detection limits; (ii) a wide range of sophisticated tandem (ion mobility) mass spectrometers can be easily adapted for operation with GC–API; and (iii) the conditions of an atmospheric pressure ion source can promote structure diagnostic ion–molecule reactions that are otherwise difficult to perform using conventional GC–MS instrumentation. This literature review addresses the merits of GC–API for nontargeted screening while summarizing recent applications using various GC–API techniques. One perceived drawback of GC–API is the paucity of spectral libraries that can be used to guide structure elucidation. Herein, novel data acquisition, deconvolution and spectral prediction tools will be reviewed. With continued development, it is anticipated that API may eventually supplant EI as the de facto GC–MS ion source used to identify unknowns.

Analysis of Dechlorane Plus and related compounds in gull eggs by GC-HRMS using a novel atmospheric pressure photoionization source

Here, a new gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure photoionization-high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-APPI-HRMS) method combined with selective pressurized liquid extraction (sPLE) has been developed for the selective determination of Dechlorane Plus (DP) and its related compounds in gull egg samples used as a bioindicator of contamination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time these compounds have been analyzed by GC-MS using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI). Negative ion dopant-assisted APPI using vapors of diethyl ether and a source temperature of 250 °C provided high ionization efficiencies and mass spectra characterized by intense in-source fragment ions as well as the presence of molecular ion and characteristic cluster ions containing oxygen atoms in their chemical structure. This made it possible to improve the selectivity in the determination of these compounds compared to that obtained with traditional GC-MS ion sources. Under optimized conditions, the sPLE GC-APPI-HRMS (Orbitrap) method provided high recoveries (> 91%), good precisions (RSD% < 12%), and low method limits of detection (0.1-3.5 pg g^-1 wet weight). The developed methodology has been applied to the determination of DP and related compounds in eggs of two gull species (L. michahellis and L. audouinii) from several Spanish protected areas. The results obtained showed significant differences in the DP concentration profiles in eggs from different gull breeding locations and between gull species of the same protected area. These results demonstrated the good performance of the GC-APPI-HRMS system to achieve a selective and sensitive determination of DP and related compounds in complex environmental samples.

Facile fabrication of magnetic covalent organic frameworks and their application in selective enrichment of polychlorinated naphthalenes from fine particulate matter

Magnetic covalent organic frameworks (Fe₃O₄@TPPCl₄) were synthesized via a one-pot process in which magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@MNP) served as a magnetic core and 2,4,6-trihydroxy-1,3,5-benzenetricarbaldehyde (TP) and 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobenzidine (PCl₄) as two building blocks to form a shell. The as-prepared Fe₃O₄@TPPCl₄ nanoparticles have superior features, including large surface area (186.5 m² g^-1), high porosity, strong magnetic responsiveness (42.6 emu g^-1), high chlorine content, and outstanding thermal stability, which make them an ideal adsorbent for highly selective enrichment of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). Combining with atmospheric pressure gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS), a simple analytical method of Fe₃O₄@TPPCl₄-based magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE)-APGC-MS/MS was developed, which exhibited good linearity (r ≥ 0.9991) for eight PCNs in the concentration range 0.1-100 ng L^-1. Moreover, low detection limits (0.005-0.325 ng L^-1), high enrichment factors (46.62-81.97-fold), and good relative standard deviations (RSDs) of inter-day (n = 3, 1.64 to 7.44%) and day-to-day (n = 3, 2.62 to 8.23%) were achieved. This method was successfully applied to the selective enrichment of PCNs in fine particulate matter (PM)_2.5 samples, and ultra-trace PCNs were found in the range 1.56-3.75 ng kg^-1 with satisfactory recoveries (93.11-105.81%). The successful application demonstrated the great potential of Fe₃O₄@TPPCl₄ nanoparticles as an adsorbent for enrichment of halogenated compounds. Schematic presented one-pot synthesis of magnetic covalent organic framework nanocomposites (Fe₃O₄@TPPCl₄) and their application in the selective enrichment of PCNs from PM_2.5 prior to APGC-MS/MS analysis.

Application of gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-(APCI)MS/MS) in determination of PCBs (mono-to deca-) and PCDD/Fs in Chinese mitten crab food webs

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) are notorious persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which may bioaccumulate through food chain and play detrimental effects to organisms even at trace levels. Quantification of PCBs and PCDD/Fs in biotic samples is a great challenge. In the present study, gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry with an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source (GC-(APCI)MS/MS) was studied for the isotope-dilution analysis of PCBs (mono-to deca-) and PCDD/Fs in Chinese mitten crab food webs. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was applied for comparison. Light PCBs are compared between the two instruments for the first time. After optimization of instrument parameters, the RSDs of relative response factors of calibration curves were between 3.4% and 15.5% for PCBs and 1.7%-7.9% for PCDD/Fs. The limits of detection were between 0.021 and 0.150 pg/mL for PCBs and 0.051-0.237 pg/mL for PCDD/Fs. PCB concentrations in crab food web samples detected by GC-(APCI)MS/MS were well correlated with those detected by HRGC/HRMS. A DiCB, 3,3'-dichlorobiphenyl (PCB11), was the dominant PCB congener in aquatic food webs. Other MoCB and DiCB congeners were also widely identified; hence, low-weight PCB congeners should arouse more concern in the future. GC-(APCI)MS/MS may become an alternative instrument satisfying the PCB and PCDD/F detection.

Facile synthesis of tubular magnetic fluorinated covalent organic frameworks for efficient enrichment of ultratrace polybrominated diphenyl ethers from environmental samples

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), known as the most widely used brominated flame retardant, have received great public concern due to its hidden environment and health problems. Development of highly selective and sensitive analytical approaches for enrichment and detection of ultratrace PBDEs are in high demand. Conventional sample pretreatment techniques usually require tedious procedures, long time, and excessive consumption of solvent and sample, thus hindering ultrasensitive detection of PBDEs. To address this issue, we first reported a simple room-temperature approach for synthesis of tubular magnetic fluorinated covalent organic frameworks (MCNT@TAPB-TFTA). The introduction of fluorine atoms played multiple roles in improving the frameworks' hydrophobicity and the adsorption capabilities for PBDEs. Combined with atmospheric pressure gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS), several crucial parameters of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) including adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, pH, ion strength, the eluent, elution time and elution frequencies were examined in detail. The optimal method exhibited wide linear ranges (0.01-500 ng/L), low limit of detections (LODs, 0.0045-0.018 ng/L), good correlation coefficients (r ≥ 0.9977), and high enrichment factors (EFs, 1425-1886 folds) for eight PBDEs. Furthermore, this proposed method could be successfully applied to sensitive determination of ultratrace PBDEs in environmental samples, demonstrating the promising potential of the MCNT@TPAB-TFTA as an adsorbent in sample pretreatment.

Mass Spectrometry for Analysis of Changes during Food Storage and Processing

Many physicochemical changes occur during food storage and processing, such as rancidity, hydrolysis, oxidation, and aging, which may alter the taste, flavor, and texture of food products and pose risks to public health. Analysis of these changes has become of great interest to many researchers. Mass spectrometry is a promising technique for the study of food and nutrition domains as a result of its excellent ability in molecular profiling, food authentication, and marker detection. In this review, we summarized recent advances in mass spectrometry techniques and their applications in food storage and processing. Furthermore, current technical challenges associated with these methodologies were discussed.

Novel ionization reagent for the measurement of gas-phase ammonia and amines using a stand-alone atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) source

RATIONALE

Contaminants present in ambient air or in sampling lines can interfere with the target analysis through overlapping peaks or causing a high background. This study presents a positive outcome from the unexpected presence of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, released from a PALL HEPA filter, in the analysis of atmospherically relevant gas-phase amines using chemical ionization mass spectrometry.

METHODS

Gas-phase measurements were performed using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer equipped with a modified atmospheric pressure gas chromatography (APGC) source which allows sampling of the headspace above pure amine standards. Gas-phase N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) emitted from a PALL HEPA filter located in the inlet stream served as the ionizing agent.

RESULTS

This study demonstrates that some alkylamines efficiently form a [NMP + amine+H]⁺ cluster with NMP upon chemical ionization at atmospheric pressure. The extent of cluster formation depends largely on the proton affinity of the amine compared with that of NMP. Aromatic amines (aniline, pyridine) and diamines (putrescine) were shown not to form cluster ions with NMP.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of NMP as an ionizing agent with stand-alone APGC provided high sensitivity for ammonia and the smaller amines. The main advantages, in addition to sensitivity, are direct sampling into the APGC source and avoiding uptake on sampling lines which can be a significant problem with ammonia and amines.

Background levels of dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dlPCBs), polychlorinated, polybrominated and mixed halogenated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs & PXDD/Fs) in sera of pregnant women in Accra, Ghana

Human exposure data on dioxins and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) in Ghana are limited. Based on health risks associated with dioxins and DLCs, the impact of maternal body burdens on foetal exposure is significant. This is the first study that assesses polychlorinated, polybrominated and mixed halogenated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs and PXDD/Fs), and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dlPCBs) in sera of primiparous Ghanaians. Our sample selection includes 34 participants from two municipalities (Accra and Tema), and explores contributions from environmental and dietary exposures using questionnaire data. Sample preparation involved C₁₈ solid phase extraction, purification with acidified silica and lipid removal cartridges, and detection with gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. The calculated average toxic equivalent concentration was 5.3 pg TEQ/g lw, with contributions from dlPCBs (1.25 pg TEQ/g lw), PCDD/Fs (3.10 pg TEQ/g lw), PBDD/Fs (0.49 pg TEQ/g lw) and PXDD/Fs (0.50 pg TEQ/g lw). The calculated total TEQ concentration was lower than background TEQ concentrations reported in sera of pregnant women globally. Positive correlations were obtained for total dioxins and DLC concentrations with age and Body Mass Index (BMI). Dietary intake of seafood and dairy products had a strong influence on PCDD/F and dlPCB concentrations. Statistically significant differences were observed for dioxins and DLCs in participants from Accra (in close proximity to Agbogbloshie e-waste site) and Tema. Given the significant TEQ contribution of PBDD/Fs and PXDD/Fs (~20%), it is essential to explore these classes of dioxins and DLCs in future biomonitoring studies as they may pose health risks, and add extra diagnostic information in source exposure investigations.

Evaluation of gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry as an alternative to gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers

A method for the analysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in serum was developed using gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (GC-APCI-MS/MS). The ionization and fragmentation performance of APCI were evaluated and compared with those of electron ionization (EI). In contrast to extensive fragmentation caused by EI with high energy, soft ionization achieved by APCI produced mass spectra dominated by molecular ions from the first stage of MS analysis. Better sensitivity and selectivity achieved by the GC-APCI-MS/MS method allowed to analyze serum samples with a low volume (100 μL). The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.067 to 14 pg/mL for the analysis in serum samples. The developed method was evaluated at three spiking levels (0.05, 0.5 and 5 ng/mL for PCBs), showing good recoveries and repeatability. The recoveries ranged from 74.0% to 130.5%, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were less than 20%, for all analytes. The determination of PCBs and PBDEs in the human serum samples by GC-APCI-MS/MS was compared with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with EI (GC-EI-MS/MS). BDE-99 and BDE-100 were successfully quantified by GC-APCI-MS/MS, while these two PBDE congeners were not detected by GC-EI-MS/MS. The GC-APCI-MS/MS method had a clear advantage when analyzing compounds at low levels.

Fast gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure (photo)ionization mass spectrometry of polybrominated diphenylether flame retardants

Gas chromatography (GC) and mass spectrometry (MS) are powerful, complementary techniques for the analysis of environmental toxicants. Currently, most GC-MS instruments employ electron ionization under vacuum, but the concept of coupling GC to atmospheric pressure ionization (API) is attracting revitalized interest. API conditions are inherently compatible with a wide range of ionization techniques as well high carrier gas flows that enable fast GC separations. This study reports on the application of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and a custom-built photoionization (APPI) source for the GC-MS analysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a ubiquitous class of flame retardants. Photoionization of PBDEs resulted in the abundant formation of molecular ions M^•+ with very little fragmentation. Some photo-oxidation was observed, which differentiated critical BDE isomers. Formation of protonated molecules [M+H]⁺ did not occur in GC-APPI because the ionization energy of H₂O (clusters) exceeds the energy of the ionizing photons. Avoiding mixed-mode ionization is a major advantage of APPI over APCI, which requires careful control of the source conditions. A fast GC-API-MS method was developed using helium and nitrogen carrier gases that provides good separation of critical isomers (BDE-49/71) and elution of BDE 209 in less than 7 min (with He) and 15 min (with N₂). It will be shown that the GC-APPI and GC-APCI methods match the sensitivity and improve upon the selectivity and throughput of established methods for the analysis of PBDEs using standard reference materials (NIST SRM 1944 and SRM 2585) and selected environmental samples.

Application of a High-Resolution Quadrupole/Orbital Trapping Mass Spectrometer Coupled to a Gas Chromatograph for the Determination of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Cow's and Human Milk

A quadrupole/orbital trapping mass spectrometer or Q-Exactive (QE) interfaced with a gas chromatograph (GC) was optimized for measuring polychlorinated dibenzo- p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in foods. Figures of merit include (1) an instrument detection limit (IDL) for 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- p-dioxin (TCDD) of 9 femtograms (fg), (2) quantitative mass resolution from PCDD interferences (e.g., PCBs, methoxy-PCBs DDTs, polychlorodibenzylphenyl ethers, polychloroxanthenes, methyl-polychlorodibenzofuran, and polychlorodibenzothiophenes), and (3) mass accuracy <1 ppm at the IDL. The QE measured the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in whole cow's milk with no known source of contamination (e.g., TCDD 33 fg/g fat). A National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) unfortified human milk standard reference material (SRM) 1953 was measured determining 27 PCDD/F and PCB congeners with an average difference of 7.6% from the certified results. The QE-GC is a benchtop instrument, easy to service, easy to operate, and requires no lock masses, mass preselection, or chemical ionization conditions. The QE-GC demonstrated that it can be an alternative to the double focusing magnetic sector instruments (sector) for the high-resolution measurement of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in dairy products.

Evaluation of multiple alternative instrument platforms for targeted and non-targeted dioxin and furan analysis

The use of gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution magnetic sector mass spectrometers (GC-HRMS) is well established for dioxin and furan analysis. However, the use of gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole (MS/MS) and time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometers with atmospheric pressure ionization (API) and traditional electron ionization (EI) for dioxin and furan analysis is emerging as a viable alternative to GC-HRMS screening. These instruments offer greater versatility in the lab for a wider range of compound identification and quantification as well as improved ease of operation. The instruments utilized in this study included 2 API-MS/MS, 1 traditional EI-MS/MS, an API-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometer (API-QTOF), and a EI-high-resolution TOF (EI-HRTOF). This study compared these 5 instruments to a GC-HRMS using method detection limit (MDLs) samples for dioxin and furan analysis. Each instrument demonstrated acceptable MDL values for the 17 chlorinated dioxin and furans studied. The API-MS/MS instruments provide the greatest overall improvement in MDL value over the GC-HRMS with a 1.5 to 2-fold improvement. The API-QTOF and EI-TOF demonstrate slight increases in MDL value as compared with the GC-HRMS with a 1.5-fold increase. The 5 instruments studied all demonstrate acceptable MDL values with no MDL for a single congener greater than 5 times that for the GC-HRMS. All 5 instruments offer a viable alternative to GC-HRMS for the analysis of dioxins and furans and should be considered when developing new validated methodologies.

Analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in stack gas emissions by gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry

A gas chromatography coupled to triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-(QqQ)MS/MS) including a soft-ionization through an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) source based method was compared with the high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) standard reference method EN1948, for the analysis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) in stack gas emissions. The stack emission samples were collected, both, by manual method sampling (from 6 to 8h) and by long-term sampling systems (sampling time of several weeks). This work presents the first comparison of GC-(QqQ)MS/MS with APCI source with the European Standard EN1948 technique for stack gas emissions. Sample concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 596pg I-TEQ/Nm³. Comparative results in all investigated samples showed relative errors that were within ±15%. These results make GC-(QqQ)MS/MS with APCI suitable for the quantitative analysis of dioxins in the studied samples and create a real alternative tool to the reference sector GC-HRMS instruments.

The performance of atmospheric pressure gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry compared to gas chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry for the analysis of polychlorinated dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls in food and feed samples

Recently, gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) has been added in European Union (EU) legislation as an alternative to magnetic sector high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for the analysis of dioxins and dioxin like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCB) in food and feed. In this study the performance of APGC-MS/MS compared to GC-HRMS is investigated and compared with EU legislation. The study includes the legislative parameters, relative intermediate precision standard deviation (S_Rw,rel), trueness, sensitivity, linear range and ion ratio tolerance. In addition, over 200 real samples of large variety and spanning several orders of magnitude in concentration were analyzed by both techniques and the selectivity was evaluated by comparing chromatograms. The S_Rw,rel and trueness were evaluated using (in-house) reference samples and fulfill to EU legislation, though the S_Rw,rel was better with GC-HRMS. The sensitivity was considerably better than of GC-HRMS while the linear range was similar. Ion ratios were mostly within the tolerable range of ±15%. A (temporary unresolved) systematic deviation in ion ratio was observed for several congeners, yet this did not lead to exceeding of the maximum ion ratio limits. The APGC-MS/MS results for the non-dioxin-like-PCBs (ndl-PCBs) were negatively biased, particularly for PCB138 and 153 in contaminated samples. The selectivity of APGC-MS/MS was lower for several matrices. Particularly for contaminated samples, interfering peaks were observed in the APGC chromatograms of the native compounds (dioxins) and labeled internal standards (PCBs). These can lead to biased results and ultimately to false positive samples. It was concluded that the determination of dioxins and PCBs using APGC-MS/MS meets the requirements set by the European Commission. However, due to generally better selectivity and S_Rw,rel, GC-HRMS is the preferred method for monitoring purposes.

Determination of steroidal oestrogens in tap water samples using solid-phase extraction on a molecularly imprinted polymer sorbent and quantification with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)

An analytical method was established and validated for the analysis of steroidal oestrogens in tap water samples. Gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) and gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) were used for the identification/quantification of selected compounds and the analytical performance of these techniques was evaluated. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) stationary phase that was highly selective for oestrogens were used for the extraction of 100-mL aliquots of water samples. The recoveries of analytes with the described methods ranged from 92 to 114 %, while the repeatability in terms of relative standard deviations (RSDs) was in the range from 2.1 to 15.2 % (n = 5). It was concluded that SPE with MIP that was highly selective for oestrogens in combination with GC-HRMS detection is more preferable for the analysis of oestrogens in tap water samples. The typical oestrogen, 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), was detected above the method limit of quantification (m-LOQ) in 5 of 14 analysed tap water samples at concentrations from 0.09 to 0.15 ng L(-1). Despite that 17α-ethynylestradiol (17α-EE2) was not quantified in this study above m-LOQ, the presence of this chemical was qualitatively confirmed in some of the analysed samples.

Meeting the European Commission performance criteria for the use of triple quadrupole GC-MS/MS as a confirmatory method for PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in food and feed samples

Until recently, European Union (EU) legislation required the use of high-resolution gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-HRMS) based on magnetic sector analyzers as a standard approach for confirmatory analysis of dioxins (PCDDs) and furans (PCDFs) in feed and food. However, recent technological advances in MS instruments enabled other alternative analytical techniques to meet the same analytical criteria as those requested for HRGC-HRMS. In this sense, triple quadrupoles (GC-MS/MS) can be a realistic alternative for the analysis of dioxins. In this work, the performance of GC-MS/MS technology was evaluated against the criteria demanded by the EU for confirmatory analysis of dioxins and PCBs in food and feed. Thus, the study comprises a number of parameters including chromatographic separation, limit of quantification, linearity, repeatability, and ion ratio precision. Analyses of solvent standards as well as sample extracts (inter-calibration extracts and certified reference materials) were also considered within the scope of this study. Additionally, direct comparisons of the results obtained by GC-MS/MS with those from GC-HRMS were made. The results of this work suggested that GC-MS/MS was highly sensitive and selective for confirmatory analysis of PCDD/Fs and related compounds in food and feed samples and meets all the criteria requested by the European Commission.

Atmospheric pressure gas chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry for simultaneous determination of fifteen organochlorine pesticides in soil and water

In this study, the application of atmospheric pressure gas chromatography quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (APGC-QTOF-MS) has been investigated for simultaneous determination of fifteen organochlorine pesticides in soil and water. Soft ionization of atmospheric pressure gas chromatography was evaluated by comparing with traditional more energetic electron impact ionization (EI). APGC-QTOF-MS showed a sensitivity enhancement by approximately 7-305 times. The QuEChERs (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) method was used to pretreat the soil samples and solid phase extraction (SPE) cleanup was used for water samples. Precision, accuracy and stability experiments were undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of the method. The results showed that the mean recoveries for all the pesticides from the soil samples were 70.3-118.9% with 0.4-18.3% intra-day relative standard deviations (RSD) and 1.0-15.6% inter-day RSD at 10, 50 and 500 μg/L levels, while the mean recoveries of water samples were 70.0-118.0% with 1.1-17.8% intra-day RSD and 0.5-12.2% inter-day RSD at 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 μg/L levels. Excellent linearity (0.9931 ≦ r(2)≤ 0.9999) was obtained for each pesticides in the soil and water matrix calibration curves within the range of 0.01-1.0mg/L. The limits of detection (LOD) for each of the 15 pesticides was less than 3.00 μg/L, while the limit of quantification (LOQ) was less than 9.99 μg/L in soil and water. Furthermore, the developed method was successfully applied to monitor the targeted pesticides in real soil and water samples.
